so im new here.
i just rooted my phone at&t gs3 i747. everything was fine. after that i decided to update the phone from android 4.0 to 4.1.1 through kies. everything was working normal. when i tried using my rooted app .a pop up showed that my phone isnt rooted anymore.i dont want to root my phone again to prevent further damage. a video/tutorial would be nice to resolve this problem. thank you
ps. where should i go if i want to update my rooted phone?
You can't update through kies if you rooted your phone as it'll flash an unrooted firmware. Just root it again.

The update wiped the root, you cant either re-root the phone or delete the rooted apps and keep the unrooted phone.

So i have ics rooted with the snapdragon program. JB is coming out soon so if I am rooted and I get the update what will happen to my root? If the root will go away what is another option to upgrade to Stock JB and also have root?
There are various threads on this topic. You will lose root if you upgrade. You can always root again afterwards. Our you can use rootkeeper. But I'm not sure if it will work.

You will need to return phone to stock rom when update is released. Root might not be an issue but bloat will be required.
Don't worry about losing root. As soon as it's released there will be instructions on how to root. Devs rule!

I am already on stock and all my bloat is there nothing has been frozen, but otherwise u are saying root will remain? and also if i upgrade with the root can i get the phone bricked and will i loose any of my data?
When update is released back up your data to sdcard, remove card, run update via kies (I assume as this was the way my s2 skyrocket received updates) and then root again. Getting root back will not be an issue. We are still a week or 2 away... until then sit tight

This morning, I received a notification from T-Mobile that there was a software update to 4.1.2 My phone was rooted and had 4.1.1 installed.
I tried OTA unsuccessfully as it would freeze on me. I connected my cell via usb to my computer for the update using Kies. My computer recognized my cell and was installing the update. The phone rebooted and everything appeared to be going well. When i checked my software version it was still at 4.1.1, now I noticed that my phone was un-rooted. Also, when I try to connect to Kies it does not connect to my phone. I tried several times to update via OTA, it will not connect. Please help, I want to update my phone without loss of my data.

Re: [Q] Software Update 4.2.1 HELP!
The update was 4.1.1 with new baseband not 4.2.1. Updating via KIES will definitely unroot the phone.

My cell is unrooted now. Is there anyway to at least update my software to 4.1.2 ???
Thanks for your help and time.
Re: [Q] Software Update 4.2.1 HELP!
I don't think there's an update to 4.1.2 either. Maybe it was a dream.
T-Mobile SGS III
It's all smoke and mirrors.
Not sure yet if it is 4.1.1 with a small patch (as OTA is about 4.3mb) or 4.1.2 (as Sammobile has it listed as 4.1.2 and 700+mb) Jury is still out but here is a thread going on about it ---> New OTA ROM - T999UVDLJC.
We do know that it is not 4.2.1. @OP can you please edit your title accordingly? Post>Edit>Go Advanced Please and thanks.
Edit: Sammobile changed it to 4.1.1. Must have been a typo. It happens. Probably a security patch or something.

Nah, not yet . This thread has evolved into a "Help me get Root back" thread.
I'll let it ride for awhile even though all the answers are readily available. He's brand, spanking new (just registered this morning). But since he is was Rooted, he should know how all this works.
To the OP... the update from what I hear has nothing special.. And if you're rooted, I'm sure you'll be able to flash a custom ROM based off of this update in a matter of weeks.

There is already a stock 4.1.2 rooted update.zip file available to update with.
i have same issue,however kies indicates 4.1.1 is up-to-date.
any suggestions for kies issue?
Right now 4.1.1 is up to date I called att they said they found a bug in the internal software so they stopped pushing the update out but it'll be back soon.

Of course. And after promising the update after advertising it they halt it. And they put out no official posting of this that I could find. Or the person you talked to is full of it because they don't know why you have not got it and don't want to bother or don't know how to figure it out. The last is the most likely.
Now of it is true about the bug I wonder if they will push the bug free version out to everyone again.

when i connected my s3 to kies it says my 4.1.1 is the latest firmware
so did att stop rolling out the update?
You updated via Kies? I believe AT&T is only updating OTA, not through Kies.
Also, I was pure stock, but rooted. The update failed. It left my phone half updated and I couldn't get it to update, even after unrooting. This appears to be what happened to most rooted 4.1.1 phones on AT&T.
I had to flash back to stock via Kies in order for the update to work.

I was on 4.1.1 rooted and updated to 4.1.2 via OTA. What method did you use to re-root your phone?
Oh I'm sorry. Since this is an AT&T forum I just assumed.
I'm sure in a worse case scenario you can just flash it back to stock. I choose to use Kies because then I didn't have to download the correct firmware like you do with Odin.
The flash counter still says 1, but the Device Status did reset to Normal. Of course I lost root.

Rooting for 4.1.2
I'd love to know a proper way to root without tripping the counter on 4.1.2. I rooted the other day and now it wont let me turn on my wifi. Good thing the phone was only a month old lol, new phone is already on the way from AT&T. Any help is greatly appreciated as I have searched and googled already.

I don't think rooting enables tripping the counter. From what I understand, Tripping flash counter occurs when you flash a custom recovery on jellybean. Best method is to just reset the flash counter when you are going to unroot your phone by using the TriangleAway app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114

I used mrRobinson's method... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426. You have to use TriangleAway to reset counter.
Is this for real??

Yes it is. KitKat is now available for the Canadian Note II and S III.
It is real! :victory:
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 upgrade to KitKat now available to download
Now, the real question is : is the bootloader locked ?!
Waiting rooted stock ROM:fingers-crossed:
Telus made their available earlier today, and Bell's is out now.
On a side note, does anyone know how to get the update on a rooted device? I just rooted mine a few weeks ago. Still running stock ROM, but nothing I've tried seems to work.

Forget it, you won't be able to get it through official OTA.
Once you're rooted, your only way to update is to wait for someone to create a flashable zip of the update, flash the entire ROM by downloading from samfirmware or wait for a custom ROM.

Tried updating over KIES - what an ordeal. Had to run through emergency recovery twice but finally got it. I wasn't using root access for a great deal - basically lose out on Greenify automanaging and being able to revoke permissions. I can live with that for a while.
I hear towelroot for the s5 works with the kk update.

KIES doesn't want to recognise my device and Odin is... either stuck on flashing system.img.ext4 or taking really long... heh
EDIT: Changed USB port and Cable and it flashed properly...
Great News!
That's really a great news!!! Anyone planning to make a flashable zipfile for this rom without the bootloader and knox? I preserve 4.1.2 bootloader on my phone since 4.3 came out. So far, is this update good ?? i heard battery life not really good...
Thanks guys!
Has anyone tried installing the firmware using Mobile Odin and using the Everroot option?
I'm not really willing to try it for myself as this is my daily driver phone...
I wouldn't recommend this update. I updated this morning and everything seemed fine until I tried running Waze on the way home from work. My device was plugged into power as it usually is, but now on this new version my battery is actually discharging WHILE connected to power.
Now to look into rolling back. This is a deal breaker.
Edit: And for the record, this drain is confirmed on two different Galaxy S3's in our house.

I just installed update. I was rooted running flashed stock 4.4.3 rom... I used Android Toolkit from skipsoft and it worked..
I tried different ODIN versions with no joy.. Using the Android Toolkit somehow when it loaded ODIN the flash to stock 4.4.3 worked...
UPDATE: I disabled AVG while using toolkit, i had not using odin orginally it may be related to my issu
Be careful using the toolkit. Its been known to brick devices and cause other problems as well.
Yay. Pretty much the same as using any method I suppose. Got lucky I guess.
Is this new bootloader is locked to prevent downgrading to another bootloader ???
Its not "locked" (meaning you can still flash custom recoveries and kernels), but I fully expect it'll be the same as before with regard to downgrading.

Ok. So downgrading from 4.4 bootloader to 4.3 should not work i guess??? . Another question, With 4.4 bootloader, is it possible to flash a 4.3 Rom ???
Correct. Provided its like 4.3, you can only flash the same or newer firmware.
I believe you should still be able to flash older roms like before, but have not seen this confirmed yet.
