External SD for Apps/Cache/etc - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi,
I am getting the annoying "Insufficient Space" errors whenever I install some things from app market. One thing can be 1mb and not work while others that are bigger will randomly work! It's just random .. but also seems to be a trend of apps i installed in the past, or ones that i have already that are trying to update. YES it tried wiping cache/dalvik cache, so no tips on factory reset/cache etc ty
There are many OUTDATED/broken tutorials for making an external partition for app data and such, and I am having trouble finding a good guide on how to do this.
Can anyone show me a good guide/video that is recent, using TWRP, that can show me how to accomplish this?
Other info:
* I do NOT use cyanogenmod (some of the App2SD apps are only for CM9/10)
* TWRP 2.6.0.0 is missing the SD card partition button! So I flashed CWM and made a 4gb partition in my extSD card. Now what?
Thanks mates

Related (had a new thread for this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359039 - I can't find the 'partition SD card' under advanced settings .. it's just not there! I think my version is too new; perhaps they moved it but i can't find it).

! would also like to see this issue resolved

Ok, so I have my external SD card partitioned. In regards to my related post, it was a bug so CWM was able to partition.
Now i have this 4gb partitioned space with 0 swap space as instructed. Now I want to make it so that apps install there instead of the emulated SDcard and also have the dalvik cache/cache there as well or whatever the heck it is that takes away the "INSUFFICIENT SPACE" bug when I 100% have space.... [Q] Yet another market "download failed" thread... (HTC Evo)

So I'm not the most amateur guy our there with rooting, and I've flashed roms countless amounts of times, but I'm now getting the "Download failed" error whenever trying to download from the market.
I've had the issue before and wiping cache from the market app, google Talk, browser and the phone cache solved the problem in the past. This newest rom I have (B.O.S. Kingdom Port RC3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088908) is not responding when I try these things. I haven't been able to find a solution when searching through the threads on here... Any suggestions to things I might try?
As you can imagine, I'm extremely frustrated with my phone at this point

Check to see how much internal and sd card space you have left. I believe that ROM is too big for all of it to fit on the system partition so some of it gets put where your apps normally are. You may need to add an ext partition to your sd card to free up some space.

I can tell you right off the bat you hit that right on the nose. This rom is HUGE.
After checking, there are 101MB on the internal memory and 5.87/16 gigs on my SD card. I've noticed some people create tis partition. I know it wipes the card when it is performed. Can you direct me to detailed instructions on performing the partition? I don't mind wiping the phone out. (I do it frequently)
And Thank you very much for the help!

Try wiping everything and reflashing the rom.

If you have a LOT of apps, and re-install them all at the same time, sometimes the dalvik cache seems to get full and the phone reports that it is out of memory when you try to install another app. If that's the case, try clearing data from Market and wiping the dalvik cache in Recovery.
thnx
thanks every one but can u tell me how can i delet a thread ???
i did what u told u but nothing changed still the same problem
sone one told me to do partitions in the ext4 or it is some thing related to this fact can any one tell me what did he mean ?

The DHD has a lot of internal memory so can handle a lot of apps installed. However if you have a really large amount of apps, it is possible to make a special partition on your SD card that acts as an extension to the internal memory. This is called an sd-ext partition and it can be done in recovery. However you also need special scripts to make it work. It's mostly used on older phones like the Desire that have less memory than the DHD, or on older versions of Android. Since Froyo came out, if they start to run low on internal memory, most people just use the "Move to SD" feature that is built-in to Android (Settings/Applications/Manager Applications then select an app to see if the "Move to SD Card" button is enabled).
However it sounds like you still have a lot of internal memory free, so it's more likely to be a problem with the Android system and the Market not recognising that you have free space. Try clearing Market data as well as clearing the Dalvik cache. If you haven't already tried it, go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/All Applications and find the Market, select it and press the "Clear Data" button. Then go into Recovery and wipe dalvik cache again and reboot. You might need to wipe Market data again. Someone else had this in the ARHD thread and had to do this more than once before it settled down.
As for MD5, it's a checksum - a way to make sure the file downloaded correctly. Just google "how to check md5" for loads of useful info.

Accidentally formatted ex sd card in cmw !!

Hello All,
This is my first thread! I recently rooted my tmo sgs2 in order to get the full potential out of my phone. I loved it and was going flash crazy. Everything seemed to be going well until i accidentally formatted my external sd card in CMW. I was on Jug 5.0 Ultimate ICS edition and now im on the blackedition. Now all my backups are gone and some things on the phone dont seem to be working properly. Any suggestions? I tried looking through other threads but none seemed to help. Any feedback would help.
Thank you
-From a noob that just wants the best out of his phone
how important is recovering the data? typically a 'deletion'/'format' just dereferences the blocks from the memory allocation table so the data is still there. and thus you can use recovery software to get most of it back. but i'm basing this off experience with hdds and ntfs not flash memory (and probably fat32).
and formatting it shouldn't affect how your phone runs unless you moved app installations to it...
Either don't copy anything to the SD, and use a program like undelete I think is the name, wouldnt flash anythig from this method anyways, or dl a new ROM to the SD card and reflash, wiping he SD is wiping the SD, that's ur own bad and no way to actually "restore"
OK well i didnt move any of my apps to my sd so im guessing the rom is just kind of buggy then. But now when im in the process of wiping dalvik code it says
E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext] ?!?!?

Did a little googling,
/sd-ext is the mount point for Linux EXT-type partitions used with Apps2SD. It was a clever gludge from before Android supported moving apps natively; supported ROMs moved all installed apps to this new partition and symlinked them back to /data/app, so tricking the OS. Subsequent installations went to this partition also. The error is perfectly normal on devices with no EXT partition and is simply a result of the CWM code supporting a huge range of devices.

TWRP mount/backup/flash issues

OK , so this is the first time I have actually had to make a post to get an answer to a problem I am facing. Been running Civato's Flex rom for some time now and it was flashed using Team Win . But I can remember having issues finding my directory (externalsd) then, so what I did was just place it on the internal sd to get it flashed. So, now to the problem at hand. I am wanting to change roms and also do a backup, however TWRP will not allow me to place an "x" next to the external SD mount in the mount menu. Therefore I cannot do a backup due to the size limitations of my internal storage. Also how can I flash a rom which requires a full wipe if I cannot access my external sd? Obviously it can't be placed internally because of the necessary system wipe. Also the log in TWRP says failed to locate directory/sdc . Basically TWRP doesnt show the mnt/ directory to get to the external sd card, even in file explorer under the advanced menu. Any input would be awesome! Thanx!!!

You can wipe system, totally different partition. Internal SD mounts to /data/media but using twrp or cwm data wipe won't touch internal SD, so wipe away.
As for not mounting, we won't know why without logs, but try formatting it again on your PC. Android is touchy about any kind of errors or corruption.

Thanx Pio, I took a leap and it worked out for the best. Regardless of the mount issues I was having I went ahead and did the full wipe, then flashed your CM9 build which by the way is now going to be my DD. Thanx for the hard work bro, and not to mention being the first to give some insight. After doing some thorough reading I came across others running into the same external sd mounting issues with TWRP. So, I figured for the time being let it go and just move on. I think I am just going to do the sd/internal swap mod, cancelling out anymore space problems with backups on my internal storage. Again, I appreciate everything you've done for my A100! Later

Happy it worked out for you, however keep in mind one thing: Crossix's mount swap is only active in android, not recovery, so that won't help your space issues there.
Also, the mount swap needs a different setup in CM9 or any non Acer based ROM, it requires the use of script manager or any other script management app. If you need more info on it just ask. It's been mentioned a few times in various threads, and I'm sure a few times in the mount swap thread itself.

:good: Wow, once again thanx. I am glad that you let me know before I went ahead and tried the swap mod. So far the CM9 nightly is polished imo, Team Carbon themes also work great and look clean. I have noticed though that a lot of the other themes I have running on my Epic (CM9) come back with the improperly compiled error, even after a reboot on the system theme. Is this because they are just not meant to be ran on the tablets resolutions? Thnx a lot Pio, ur the shiz :highfive:

Yeah it seems the more complex the theme, the less likely it works on our device, however stetsonaw has an awesome theme that works on our devices, if you blue is your thing, its linked in the OP for aoikaze. I didn't link it in this nightlies thread as it's meant for pure CM9, Aoikaze is the CM9 based ROM I released a little while ago.
Edit: Forgot to mention, it's included in Aoikaze too, its meant to be run with it, but is optional of course.

HTC Sense, Lee Droid or a new ROM?

Hello,
I am a noob and I hate myself.
I recently purchased a second hand HTC Desire with Lee Droid on it. Everything was working fine. Then the phone asked my if I wanted to update? I tried to update but it would not work. Then after a while it stopped asking me to update. Then a little while later it was on a start up loop. I took out the SD card and it work but I had no apps, etc.
Now I have a serious problem with internal storage. I did a factory reset (still has the Lee Droid ROM on it) and it shows I have 92mb of internal storage...instead of up to 1GB!
So....I decided to try a few things. After doing a bit of quick reading I decided to go with the original HTC Sense software. In trying to do this I get a 140 bootloader error...so I must be using the wrong ROM?
Getting slightly more frustrated now...
I figured out I had to partition the original SD card again to get it working and that had worked but now I only have 112mb of internal storage using that Sd Card (I had purchased another one when this stopped working). So the internal storage issue still applies. And the main thing with this for me is that apps such as facebook and more will not transfer to the SD card whereas I thought I could do this before? So even to have Facebook on it and upgrade the apps with the phone gives me a 'low memeory' notification.
SO I guess my question is..
Should I just go back to HTC Sense and what ROM do I use?
or
Should I try out a different ROM?
Bear in mind I did not flash the phone originally, and while not a complete computer noob I would be quiet nervous about doing this with out some experienced help.
Everything you need to know is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
As a rough guide:
When you format your card you need an ext partition of say 1gb for app storage space (a2sd). The rest of the card should be fat32. This is to solve your low memory issues.
Download the custom rom of your choice to the fat32 partition of the sd card and boot the phone into recovery (volume down and power button then choose recovery). You probably have clockwork mod recovery or similar. Choose the option install zip from SD card.
Before you do this, in recovery you should wipe the dalvik cache and perform a wipe/factory reset.
Depending on the rom you use you will probably need to download and flash and a2sd script such as darktremour. This will make downloaded apps save to the ext partition automatically rather than to the phone memory.
It is worth doing as much reading up as poss before embarking on this and make sure you have enough charge in your phone when flashing or you might end up with a brick!
As for the choice of rom you need to decide if you want a rom with HTC sense included or an AOSP rom.

Ok thanks. Do you know any way I can find out which HTC Sense ROM is for my phone?
No matter what I do the internal memory is always lower than 120mb. It should be 512mb max right? I just did a factory reset again and it's at 77mb without any apps installed ot gmail or facebook profiles added! It these any way to fix this first off before I read more into flashing the phone with a different ROM?

Unless u use a2sd,ad2sd,int2sd or some script to move something to your sd partition,
you aren't going to have any more memory.
I think I should really go back to Sense before I do anything else or drive myself mad!
I tried another Sense ROM and it says I need to have my battery over 30pc but it's nearly fully charged!!!

And how can I find out what Sense ROM is for my phone?
I have downloaded the app 2 sd and done the sdk thing...
but it still does not solve my internal memory issue and why was it so big before on a rooted phone? The phone is still rooted. So it should be the same? Do I need to get my SD card to count as internal storage somehow. Any links?

The guides for installing the customs roms u download r probably in the rom thread where the rom came from.
If it says ur battery is < 30% then u r using a RUU and u will need the correct one for ur phone.
Or use the 2.3 Ruu upgrade for Desire from HTC/Dev.
I think this is your best solution - CM7 which is a great rom without HTC sense.
If you have not created your ext partition yet do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932824
Then flash this rom:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=bravo&type=stable
Installation instructions for the rom are here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/forum-36/announcement-23-cyanogenmod-72-released-2012-jun-16/
Then install S2E from the play store. This includes an a2sd script and has tick boxes to chose what to send to your SD ext partition.
Then you are done

OK...a friend did the following:
Updated my android because I was still on 2.2
Updated the root to Andreev
Installed Ice Cream Sandwich...the current BETA I think...which works fine but lately the phone freezes sometimes
First I thought you were on about memory to SD swap apps on the market so I did a bit of reading. I installed S2E but cannot or do not know how to get it working. It asked me to install something else which kept giving me a 'cannot respond' message.
I tried to install A2SDGUI as per some guide but it says that either my phone is not rooted, I do not have an EXT partition or A2sd scripts are not installed.
I tried to install EXTions on both my SD cards both manually using partition software and using ROM Manager. They both show up as having a regular FAT32 partition, and EXT one and a Linux one. They still do not work.
I have tried using various different partition softwares and my head is in a spin form them and different guides. I cannot get Gparted to work, how do I get the Image from the download or install it on my PC?
I also think I have moved my Dalvik Cache to my original SD card and not the phone tells me I have 141mb free internal memory but I get 'insufficient space' messages when trying to download apps or update them. Since I did this, even when putting on my manual SD backup from my new SD card back onto it I get messages saying 'app does not exist, even on the Play Market one. Play Market works fine on the original SD card which I think I have moved the Dalvik cache to.
There is also no nandroid backup on the new SD card as I get an error message...
Please please please someone help me. All I want to do now is get more internal memory and have everything working with my new 4GB SD card in the phone. Thanks to everyone who posted links to guides but I am still getting to terms with some of the terminology and may need guides to do some of the things that are listed in the guides. As it is now I cannot download any new apps. When the phone was rooted to Ice Cream Sandwich I could only download about 3 apps and cannot update youtube, maps, google, mail, etc.

Most of the scripts will show your internal storage as normal, then report a a2sd partion.
The only two that report your internal AND est partion as one block are data2sd, and the ammurlez script. Both of these are flashable with Lee Droid, but afterwards. If you did a factory reset this would restore your Lee Droid ROM but wipe your data2sd or ammurlez script. This is why before updating anything, or flashing a new zip CWM backups are your friend.
Just "factory reset" it again, this DOES NOT" change your hboot or SD partions, then flash the ammurlez or data2sd scripts. Your phone will be as before reporting 1gb internal memory.
Or......play with all the awesome ROM and script possibilities on this forum till you find a setup you love......speed versus storage, sense versus aosop versus mui etc.
Most peoples signatures list their setup, try em all!

The gparped image needs to be burned to cd rom. Just google how to do it. Then boot your pc with the cd in the drive and gparted will load up.
If you follow the guide I left earlier methodically step by step using the actual rom suggested it should work. Please note S2E only works on CM7 or CM9 roms only.
If try CM7 and don't like it you can flash something else after but at least you will have everything working and also gain an understanding of the steps you need to go through to do it.
