[Q] Yet another market "download failed" thread... (HTC Evo) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm not the most amateur guy our there with rooting, and I've flashed roms countless amounts of times, but I'm now getting the "Download failed" error whenever trying to download from the market.
I've had the issue before and wiping cache from the market app, google Talk, browser and the phone cache solved the problem in the past. This newest rom I have (B.O.S. Kingdom Port RC3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088908) is not responding when I try these things. I haven't been able to find a solution when searching through the threads on here... Any suggestions to things I might try?
As you can imagine, I'm extremely frustrated with my phone at this point

Check to see how much internal and sd card space you have left. I believe that ROM is too big for all of it to fit on the system partition so some of it gets put where your apps normally are. You may need to add an ext partition to your sd card to free up some space.

I can tell you right off the bat you hit that right on the nose. This rom is HUGE.
After checking, there are 101MB on the internal memory and 5.87/16 gigs on my SD card. I've noticed some people create tis partition. I know it wipes the card when it is performed. Can you direct me to detailed instructions on performing the partition? I don't mind wiping the phone out. (I do it frequently)
And Thank you very much for the help!

[Q] Is this normal? (RCMixS ROM)

Hey,
So over last weekend I installed the RCMixS rom, and it works good, for the most part.
I experience the following bugs first of all:
-Random restarts
-Randomly deletes alarms
-Lockscreen screws up sometimes (GO SMS Pro icon doesnt show sometimes)
-HTC Flipclock does always shows old time for a split second after bypassing lock screen
Also, I have barely installed any apps, and I have only 16MB left... I was able to install more apps using the stock software with the desire :s
Finally, I only have about ~100MB free of memory, no matter what. On the only stock software, I had close to ~250MB free usually.
Anyways, im new to roms and rooting. Is this normal? I was under the impression after I root I would get rid of all the HTC crapware and have more free space... but apparently not? Is there a better rom with HTC sense 2.1/3.0 mix out there?
Thanks!
Hmmm? Anyone?
Wow, ok. Thought this would of been replied to by now since I read it last night (sorry).
Anyway, bugs. There will always be bugs in software, especially software that is ported and is a hybrid rom, being Sense 2.1/3.0.
As for storage. The internal storage is ****. By the time you install the rom and nothing else you will have about ~130MB of internal memory available. That's where A2SD comes in. By default, when you flashed the rom it would of installed an A2SD script so no matter what apps you install, you have enough memory for it. You can't see how much space is available by going into your settings, you'll need a file explorer or an app that can read the ext partition.

Oh okay, but I keep getting the low-space message, anyway to fix that?
Yeh. Use a2sd. Did you create an ext partition when you flashed the rom? Like I said by default it installs one. The rom shouldn't even boot without it.

Yup, I created a 1GB ext3 partition.
is a2sd an app from the market?
nah!! its not an app..its a feature..a2sd stands for applications to sd card..most of the apps that you install can be moved to fat32 partition of your sd card..you vil find a .android.secure.blah blah name folder on fat 32 partition..But if you use custom roms which have a2sd+ feature then the apps will be stored in sd-ext partition of your card...
A2sd+ is useful because even if you connect your phone to pc via disk storage mode, you can access all the apps whereas the opposite happens when you use only a2sd...ie you cant access apps when connected in disk storage mode!!
Hmm, so apps are automatically moved? But i keep getting the low storage warning on the desire

Right,
First things first, where are you?
Secondly, when did you get the phone?
If you're in the UK and you got the phone in June/July/August/September 2010 then the chances are your phone is faulty and that is the cause of the reboots. I had this happen to me so I'm going by experience here. I got a new phone and the problems completely disappeared.
Secondly, if you're running out of room:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110921

http://uploadingit.com/file/i2wdwu9xmuledzer/RCMixS_v2.0_D2EXT_Wmjan.part2.rar
Download those modified versions of this ROM and use that as it gives Data2EXT instead of A2SD+. So instead of giving the ROM 1GB of the SD card and still running out of space, you give it 1GB of SD and don't run out of space.

although i have all that my phone keeps telling me when i try to install any new application there is insufficient space please manage some applications to free space
that was the first strike now when i open the sd and phone storage beside the sd and internal memory space there isn't any numbers ( imean it has to show number like for say 515 mb free and so on right ) insted of that there is 2 letters PB and nothing more
i tried to do app 2 sd helped a lil but the prob;em kept asking for more space
so please help me fix this i really love android revulotion so much and i want to keep using it
Try wiping everything and reflashing the rom.

If you have a LOT of apps, and re-install them all at the same time, sometimes the dalvik cache seems to get full and the phone reports that it is out of memory when you try to install another app. If that's the case, try clearing data from Market and wiping the dalvik cache in Recovery.
thnx
thanks every one but can u tell me how can i delet a thread ???
i did what u told u but nothing changed still the same problem
sone one told me to do partitions in the ext4 or it is some thing related to this fact can any one tell me what did he mean ?

The DHD has a lot of internal memory so can handle a lot of apps installed. However if you have a really large amount of apps, it is possible to make a special partition on your SD card that acts as an extension to the internal memory. This is called an sd-ext partition and it can be done in recovery. However you also need special scripts to make it work. It's mostly used on older phones like the Desire that have less memory than the DHD, or on older versions of Android. Since Froyo came out, if they start to run low on internal memory, most people just use the "Move to SD" feature that is built-in to Android (Settings/Applications/Manager Applications then select an app to see if the "Move to SD Card" button is enabled).
However it sounds like you still have a lot of internal memory free, so it's more likely to be a problem with the Android system and the Market not recognising that you have free space. Try clearing Market data as well as clearing the Dalvik cache. If you haven't already tried it, go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/All Applications and find the Market, select it and press the "Clear Data" button. Then go into Recovery and wipe dalvik cache again and reboot. You might need to wipe Market data again. Someone else had this in the ARHD thread and had to do this more than once before it settled down.
As for MD5, it's a checksum - a way to make sure the file downloaded correctly. Just google "how to check md5" for loads of useful info.

[Q]Why am I getting the low storage space message?

Hi,
I'm totally new to all of this so please excuse the probably very basic question.
I managed to root my phone following the excellent guides on here and have flashed the MIUI rom which I really like the look of and it appears very fast.
However, the main reason I rooted was because of the internal memory space problem on the desire. I have partitioned my sd card using gparted. I thought that this would vastly increase my internal storage but when installing a few apps, I just got the storage space running low message.
When I check my settings, I have 13.18GB available on SD card and 0.9 GB available on A2SD+. However when I look at about phone, it says I have 32.57 MB available of 148MB total.
Is there anything I've done wrong or is this just the way it is?
Any advice much appreciated.
I don't know for sure, but you could try to activate A2sd:
-Download "Terminal-emulator" app
-type "su"
-type "a2sd install"
-type "a2sd cachesd"
-type "a2sd reinstall"
Between these steps your phone might reboot, if it does head back to terminal type "su" and continue with the next step.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
When you install an app, there are several parts that are saved, the 'app part' and the 'data part' of that particular app. Both are saved in the internal memory of the phone.
When you use A2SD+, you are basically moving the 'app part' that is saved on the internal memory, to the ext partition you created. However, the 'data part' is still saved on the internal. So that 148MB would still fill up over time if you have a lot of apps.
If you check the table on the http://alpharev.nl/ site, you will see that you are using a Stock Hboot with 147MB for data. Now you can s-off and use a different partition, if your ROM supports that partition then you'll have more space for your apps.
Hope this simplify things for you.
I haven't actually downoaded that many though so don't think it could only be data.
When you say that I can s-off and use a different partition, what exactly do you mean?
I think my phone is already s-off as I rooted through revolutionary. APologies again for the probably very basic question.
I'm feeling a bit nice today. LOL
Did you check the table at http://alpharev.nl
Your internal memory is composed of 3 parts. System, Data, and Cache.
System is where the android OS is saved.
Data is where your downloaded apps and android data files are saved
Cache is temporary storage.
Depending on the Rom you are using, the allocated system space might be too big for the actual Android OS size which means that there are wasted space in there that cannot be used. Now instead of wasting that precious megabytes, they repartition it and allocated it to Data which is mostly needed by downloaded apps. More data space, more apps you can install. Add A2SD+ then it increases it further since the "app part" of every app that normally is saved on the "Data Partition" is moved to the ext.
I hope I didn't confuse you. It's a mess to learn at the beginning. I tell you that.
It's certainly confusing at first!
I've just looked at the table you suggested.
Do you think if I download and flash this it should help? (I assume I would flash the bravo stock one?)
You currently have the Stock Bravo. Remember you said you only have 148MB for your apps? What Rom are you using?
I'm using MIUI (XJ) 2.1.20 (Got this info from the "about phone" screen).
Thanks for the replies.
Okay. Unfamiliar ROM. I never tried MIUI honestly but it seems that there are several versions with different 'whatever2sd' you can use. Now I wouldn't recommend that you change your partition table with any of the ones on the alpharev.nl site because that can brick your phone if done incorrectly.
My bet would be for you to use
MIUI XJ D2EXT X-PART GS 3P FINAL
MIUI XJ D2W FINAL
These I believe would move the both "app and data part" to the ext partition.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957291&highlight=miui+(xj)+2+1+20
I'll give that a go. Thanks again.
Just in case it doesn't work, are there any other roms that you are familiar with that don't have this problem?
It's a hardware problem since the phone has limited internal memory. Eventually you'll gonna have to flash one of those partition tables but don't do it if you don't understand why you are doing it in the first place.
Now you can try cyanogenmod rom. you'll still have the internal memory issues but there is a simple workaround for it for newbies.
Ok, will look at that.
I assume the simple workaround will be in the thread for that particular ROM?
Yeah. It's actually an app.
Here's the release candidate thread for the rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553680
Thanks very much for your help.
I'll give your suggestions a go and see if they make a difference.
Why not go this way
1. Download the english version from miuiandroid.com, install, and boot into MIUI till stable.
2. Download Darktremor script facebook.com/pages/Darktremor-Apps2SD/127051514027383?sk=info, flash from recovery. Reboot till stable, (though it may reboot itself again, let it sit for 5 mins to be sure).
3. Download A2SDGUI from market, install and open the app. Accept the warning (at your own risk, ) click on second tab "Dalvik", and then select "Dalvik on SD-EXT". Below the selections, click on "Move and rebuild!", it will reboot.
4. Hoping it all goes well, chillax and start downloading!
P.S: it may work with MIUI-XJ, experiment!
Just thought I'd reply to say thanks again for helping with this.
I downloaded a different ROM which you suggested and it has worked.
I've already downloaded more apps than I did the 1st time and I still have over 700MB of space left.
Your advice is much appreciated.

HTC Sense, Lee Droid or a new ROM?

Hello,
I am a noob and I hate myself.
I recently purchased a second hand HTC Desire with Lee Droid on it. Everything was working fine. Then the phone asked my if I wanted to update? I tried to update but it would not work. Then after a while it stopped asking me to update. Then a little while later it was on a start up loop. I took out the SD card and it work but I had no apps, etc.
Now I have a serious problem with internal storage. I did a factory reset (still has the Lee Droid ROM on it) and it shows I have 92mb of internal storage...instead of up to 1GB!
So....I decided to try a few things. After doing a bit of quick reading I decided to go with the original HTC Sense software. In trying to do this I get a 140 bootloader error...so I must be using the wrong ROM?
Getting slightly more frustrated now...
I figured out I had to partition the original SD card again to get it working and that had worked but now I only have 112mb of internal storage using that Sd Card (I had purchased another one when this stopped working). So the internal storage issue still applies. And the main thing with this for me is that apps such as facebook and more will not transfer to the SD card whereas I thought I could do this before? So even to have Facebook on it and upgrade the apps with the phone gives me a 'low memeory' notification.
SO I guess my question is..
Should I just go back to HTC Sense and what ROM do I use?
or
Should I try out a different ROM?
Bear in mind I did not flash the phone originally, and while not a complete computer noob I would be quiet nervous about doing this with out some experienced help.
Everything you need to know is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
As a rough guide:
When you format your card you need an ext partition of say 1gb for app storage space (a2sd). The rest of the card should be fat32. This is to solve your low memory issues.
Download the custom rom of your choice to the fat32 partition of the sd card and boot the phone into recovery (volume down and power button then choose recovery). You probably have clockwork mod recovery or similar. Choose the option install zip from SD card.
Before you do this, in recovery you should wipe the dalvik cache and perform a wipe/factory reset.
Depending on the rom you use you will probably need to download and flash and a2sd script such as darktremour. This will make downloaded apps save to the ext partition automatically rather than to the phone memory.
It is worth doing as much reading up as poss before embarking on this and make sure you have enough charge in your phone when flashing or you might end up with a brick!
As for the choice of rom you need to decide if you want a rom with HTC sense included or an AOSP rom.

Ok thanks. Do you know any way I can find out which HTC Sense ROM is for my phone?
No matter what I do the internal memory is always lower than 120mb. It should be 512mb max right? I just did a factory reset again and it's at 77mb without any apps installed ot gmail or facebook profiles added! It these any way to fix this first off before I read more into flashing the phone with a different ROM?

Unless u use a2sd,ad2sd,int2sd or some script to move something to your sd partition,
you aren't going to have any more memory.
I think I should really go back to Sense before I do anything else or drive myself mad!
I tried another Sense ROM and it says I need to have my battery over 30pc but it's nearly fully charged!!!

The guides for installing the customs roms u download r probably in the rom thread where the rom came from.
If it says ur battery is < 30% then u r using a RUU and u will need the correct one for ur phone.
Or use the 2.3 Ruu upgrade for Desire from HTC/Dev.
I think this is your best solution - CM7 which is a great rom without HTC sense.
If you have not created your ext partition yet do this:

OK...a friend did the following:
Updated my android because I was still on 2.2
Updated the root to Andreev
Installed Ice Cream Sandwich...the current BETA I think...which works fine but lately the phone freezes sometimes
First I thought you were on about memory to SD swap apps on the market so I did a bit of reading. I installed S2E but cannot or do not know how to get it working. It asked me to install something else which kept giving me a 'cannot respond' message.
I tried to install A2SDGUI as per some guide but it says that either my phone is not rooted, I do not have an EXT partition or A2sd scripts are not installed.
I tried to install EXTions on both my SD cards both manually using partition software and using ROM Manager. They both show up as having a regular FAT32 partition, and EXT one and a Linux one. They still do not work.
I have tried using various different partition softwares and my head is in a spin form them and different guides. I cannot get Gparted to work, how do I get the Image from the download or install it on my PC?
I also think I have moved my Dalvik Cache to my original SD card and not the phone tells me I have 141mb free internal memory but I get 'insufficient space' messages when trying to download apps or update them. Since I did this, even when putting on my manual SD backup from my new SD card back onto it I get messages saying 'app does not exist, even on the Play Market one. Play Market works fine on the original SD card which I think I have moved the Dalvik cache to.
There is also no nandroid backup on the new SD card as I get an error message...
Please please please someone help me. All I want to do now is get more internal memory and have everything working with my new 4GB SD card in the phone. Thanks to everyone who posted links to guides but I am still getting to terms with some of the terminology and may need guides to do some of the things that are listed in the guides. As it is now I cannot download any new apps. When the phone was rooted to Ice Cream Sandwich I could only download about 3 apps and cannot update youtube, maps, google, mail, etc.

Most of the scripts will show your internal storage as normal, then report a a2sd partion.
The only two that report your internal AND est partion as one block are data2sd, and the ammurlez script. Both of these are flashable with Lee Droid, but afterwards. If you did a factory reset this would restore your Lee Droid ROM but wipe your data2sd or ammurlez script. This is why before updating anything, or flashing a new zip CWM backups are your friend.
Just "factory reset" it again, this DOES NOT" change your hboot or SD partions, then flash the ammurlez or data2sd scripts. Your phone will be as before reporting 1gb internal memory.
Or......play with all the awesome ROM and script possibilities on this forum till you find a setup you love......speed versus storage, sense versus aosop versus mui etc.

The gparped image needs to be burned to cd rom. Just google how to do it. Then boot your pc with the cd in the drive and gparted will load up.
If you follow the guide I left earlier methodically step by step using the actual rom suggested it should work. Please note S2E only works on CM7 or CM9 roms only.
If try CM7 and don't like it you can flash something else after but at least you will have everything working and also gain an understanding of the steps you need to go through to do it.

External SD for Apps/Cache/etc

Hi,
I am getting the annoying "Insufficient Space" errors whenever I install some things from app market. One thing can be 1mb and not work while others that are bigger will randomly work! It's just random .. but also seems to be a trend of apps i installed in the past, or ones that i have already that are trying to update. YES it tried wiping cache/dalvik cache, so no tips on factory reset/cache etc ty
There are many OUTDATED/broken tutorials for making an external partition for app data and such, and I am having trouble finding a good guide on how to do this.
Can anyone show me a good guide/video that is recent, using TWRP, that can show me how to accomplish this?
Other info:
* I do NOT use cyanogenmod (some of the App2SD apps are only for CM9/10)
* TWRP 2.6.0.0 is missing the SD card partition button! So I flashed CWM and made a 4gb partition in my extSD card. Now what?
Thanks mates

Related (had a new thread for this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359039 - I can't find the 'partition SD card' under advanced settings .. it's just not there! I think my version is too new; perhaps they moved it but i can't find it).

Ok, so I have my external SD card partitioned. In regards to my related post, it was a bug so CWM was able to partition.
Now i have this 4gb partitioned space with 0 swap space as instructed. Now I want to make it so that apps install there instead of the emulated SDcard and also have the dalvik cache/cache there as well or whatever the heck it is that takes away the "INSUFFICIENT SPACE" bug when I 100% have space....
