Hey All,
I was hoping for some help.
I did a nandroid backup of my mikfroyo setup. I only selected the default settings when doing the backup, should I have selected anything else?
When I went to restore, I wiped cache, dalvik, and data reset, and then did the nandroid restore. When I rebooted I got to the first mikfroyo screen where but it never made it to the second where the letters light up one at a time, it just looped on the first screen with the "flame" type effect comes out, over and over.
I tried a battery two times pull but it did the same thing.
Any thoughts???

What recovery are you using? I'vei swear I've heard that with Amon Ra 2.3 deleting the android.secure folder from you'r sd card will alleviate that problem. I've never had an issue, but I'm almost positive I've read that somewhere around here. Also, maybe try wiping both dalvik cache and cache right after you restore your backup, but before you boot.
I am using AmonRA. I do have an .android_secure folder but there is never anything in it.
might not help much but, for next time you do something like that, everytime i do a nandroid with amon ra i select everything there is to backup, worked flawlessly every time, if you backed up your apps and data with TB or myback up you should try reflashing your rom again
Make sure you have at least 500 MB free on your SD card when you back up a rom
i don't provide soluution here just sharing my nandroid experience :
i once nandroid backup my warm z rom (sense 2.0)
ater it finish i got bootloop and made me use the nandroid backup i just create (lol)

Try deleting it. See if that makes any difference. I know I read that somewhere, I'm not losing it..haha.

i didn't run out my sd card space though.
another nandroid story :
i did nandroid restore, and everything's fine, except i lost my keyboard (touch input).
no keyboard was shown when it's needed! other input method is available normally (swipe) .
but just no normal keyboard.
funny.
Thanks for the replies. I have about 18 G left on my SD card so it is not a space issue. Maybe I will delete and backup everything???

Don't rule out the possibility that the backup could be corrupted. I just found the post I was referring to, about deleting the android.secure folder. The recommendation was to wipe sd-ext and delete the android.secure folder from the sd card. If you really, really need to restore that backup, and don't want to start fresh, you got nothing to lose by trying that. I'm actually not sure if wiping sd-ext formats the entire card or not, so as a precaution, I'd back up the contents of your card. Although I'm sure it wouldn't delete the entire card, because then there'd be no nandroid backup left to restore!

So in the options, there is...
Boot
System
data
cache
recovery
wimax
sd-ext
.android_secure
So from what I have gathered from you all, I should...
1) delete the .android_secure folder.
2) Boot into recovery, select nandroid backup, select EVERYTHING there is to select, except for .android restore
When I might want to flash back from a different ROM back to my mikfroyo setup, I would
1) wipe cache, wipe dalvik, factory reset.
2) select nandroid restore
3)Reboot system
Do I need to do a Caulkins Format all before I do the restore?

I have never backed up sd text or android_secure, and I have never had a problem restoring a nandroid. The android_secure is for the apps on your sd card, you can save those with titanium or mybackup.
And to answer your question about flashing/restoring to a different rom. Yes, wipe data/factory reset, dalvik/cache, and cache. You can use the format all before/after if you choose to just, just to be sure it all gets erased. Then do your restore

Do you still have your .android_secure folder on your sd card?
I was told to delete it from the card.
Do you select "recovery", as well, when you ar doing a backup?

Yes. It will automatically create a new android_secure folder when you begin downloading apps And yes I choose recovery. And listen to K2Buckley also. Guy is genius.

Sounds good to me, I will give it another shot. Also, in ASTRO mrg, I do not see a folder for sd ext, should it be there? I did the sd partition before I actually flashed anything, was that supposed to create the sd ext?

Will wiping the data (before ROM flash) also wipe the "SD Card" data? I know on other phones, that have a physical SD card, when you wipe data the SD data remains. But, with the Nexus having a virtual SD card, I didn't know what would happen.
In essence, I'm thinking Titanium Backup is useless unless you pull the backup data from the phone before flashing a new ROM, because the backed up data would be deleted with a data wipe for new ROM flash.

The "sd card" data remains. Nothing is messed with in that portion of memory. TiBu works great.

Thanks! I wondered what would happen with a data wipe.
If you flash a stock ROM via fastboot it WILL WIPE THE "SDCARD". EVERYTHING.
Basically:
Stock recovery data wipe/factory reset = SDcard wiped
Custom recovery data wipe/factory reset = SDcard untouched
So if you haven't rooted/CWM'd your phone yet, don't put anything big and important on the SDcard. If you have put stuff on your card just make a backup of it on your PC and then do the unlock/recovery install procedure. Then you'll be set. Titanium Backup will be back to working just like it does on any other phone once you have a custom recovery installed. No worrying about the SDcard getting wiped.
you'll definitely want to install a custom recovery if you're going to be wiping anything. Id highly recommend the clockwork touch recovery. The standard one is really a pain to use as the navigation is odd and its hard to select what you want.
^ I wonder as well, but I proceed without thinking about sdcard. Lucky enough our great dev took care of that. Btw, I didn't have time to see the recovery since when I got it I flash CWM immediately.

This thread had been dead for 8 months...
Hello everyone,
after more then 2 years with my trusted N1 i finally had to move to a new phone because i broke the screen of my old one.
having the GN now for allmost a week, and within the first few hours of owning the device it got 3 OTA updates and is now at 4.1.1. i am quite happy with it but 2 days ago i startet messing around wiht it. so i ulocked the boodloader and rooted and got myself franco kernel on the GN.
as expected everything worked fine.
today i wantet to give some 3th party roms a try. i tried installing MIUI and euroskanks cm10. both with rom manager.
but on each of them i got in a bootloop after flashing, just showing the franco kernel boot animation.
i flashed both roms without wiping the data (just the cache)
i suspect that is my problem.
i am a little bit scared about the wipe data option for flashing new roms. on my N1 it worked fine since all my files on the sd card where not touched and i could get started allmost immediantly.
unlocking the bootloader of the GN wiped everything out off my phone and i had to copy it all back from a backup.
if i choose wipe data will that also (again) wipe my complete device or just the "OS part" and leave my data alone?
if it wipes everything how do i avoid having to make a backup of my data and restore it afterwards after each and every rom i flash?
i have noted the mnt/sdcard folder on my GN that (apparently) just links back to the root of the memory. what is the puropse of this folder? just to be compatible with "old" apps that insist on writing files to the SD-card or something else?
thanks for the info
no data from sdcard gets removed.
its basically a "NON REMOVABLE sdcard"... think of it that way.

1. It will wipe your "OS part" + apps. Will leave data in "sdcard" alone. Factory Wipe clears the virtual "sdcard"
2. Can't be avoided, I use Wugfresh's toolkit to make app backups a breeze. Takes a little more time than it used to when I had my OG Droid with a EXT partition but hey, at least you'll always have a current backup of your apps.
3. Yes. It'd actually be less obvious it's still called /sdcard/ if you weren't rooted and poking around . I believe JB switches this to sdcard0 now to account for devices that have external sdcards to be mounted as /sdcard1 and so on.
Ok, I guess I get it.
Just one more thing to make sure.
It looks like all my files are in the root of my phone and mnt/sdcard has just one folder but with the same files as the folder with the same name in my root.
When I wipe data now will it keep everything or just the files in my mnt/sdcard folder?

Custom recovery (AKA not CWM or TWRP or whatever you're using) will wipe your SD card. Just remember that.
All the custom recoveries wipe /data/ while keeping /data/media/ (your sd card).
Nothing on your "SDcard" will be lost.
I'm in the same situation as the original poster and would like a "definitive" answer. CWM has both a factory reset and a format /data option (in a separate submenu). Which preserve the content of the virtual sdcard ? Which is the raccomended way to try out a JB rom? I have 10+ Gb of data in the sdcard and i would like to avoid moving everything forth and back via MTP protocol...
Thanks

IF you are using CWM recovery, "wiping data" will erase the entire userdata partition EXCLUDING /sdcard. This means that everything under /data (except /data/media which = /sdcard) will be erased. This includes all apps you have installed in /data, and most data for those apps.
IF you are using a stock recovery, "wiping data" or "factory reset, will wipe the entire userdata partition, including /sdcard.
Wiping data or factory restore/reset/whatever does NOT touch the system partition or return the device to "factory condition". So if you have installed apps in /system or have root, the will still be there.
Damn ... Every custom ROM I install are coming with some of Sony's app as Timescape, PlayNow, Xperia Gallery, Let's Golf and other useless. That's right, or is something wrong here? I'm giving Full Wipe and Kernel already switched several times ...
I tried to remove them by Root explorer and SystemApp Remover, but in both I can not find the apk's ...
thanks
Up
Help me! =(
In CWM go to "mounts and storage", "format /system", "yes"
after that flash the custom rom again
And if I tell you I've done this and the app's persist? = (
Before installing at least the last 5 Rom's, I did Full Wipe, Wipe Dalvik Cache, Cahe Partition, Format and Data System and some other I can't remember now ...
Just not formatted the SD Card, but I think this has nothing to do, right? Or does it?
.
Thanks for the reply

First try deleting ".android_secure" folder in SDcard... if it doesnt work you can try deleting "SDcard/Android/data" folder but you will lose all your apps/games data too
Have you looked in data or vendor folder.
These should still be deleted if you do a full wipe.

hey, guys!
many thanks! After format .android_secure and vendor files, the Sony Apps disappeared. =)
Hi guys. I have the 16 GB White one.
I have flashed at least 20 different ROMS since i got this phone. Even though i always wipe all data and cache. I still can see files in the tree that belong to older roms. I have have files that say BACKED, another one that says AOKP and others. Right now i'm running on Liquidsmooth JB v2-RC3.
The major files i have are the backups from CWM. Two back ups: (stock and the present liquid jb) Booth together don't make more that 4GB. Then i have on pictures and videos less that 2 BG. What else could be taking my space? I should have more than 4 GB free and my phone says i only have 500 MB free.
Is there any way to delete everything on the phone to make it clean like when it came out? Buut that i could stil keep the rom i'm using. Or even if i have to do al over again. Can some one explain to me please. Any help with be appreciated. i'LL PUSH THAT THANKS BUTTON AGAIN AND AGAIN.
In recovery format data, system, and internal (and/or) external sdcard. OR get FX file explorer or solid explorer 2 (my favorites) explore the files and delete what u don't want

Another good app is call DiskUsage.
It will show you in a graphical form what is taking up so much space. It will work on internal and external and obviously you are rooted, so it has those functions too.
What if i delete something that wont let me boot again? Also i noticed that in the internal SD card tree, there are two CLOCKWORKMOD FILES
Clockworkmod
Clockworkmod Copy
Right now i only have one back up because i deleted LIQUID one. So, right now i only have the STOCK Rom backup. Wish is around 1.8 GB.
Why there are two CWM flies and booth have 1.8 GB. ??????????So, The stock rom takes me almost 4 GB ?????????????????????/ Thats crazy.
I'd like to delete everything and start again. But i'm affraid to delete any file that preventes me from booting into recovery at least......Thanks again mate. SORRY MY ENGLISH
Thanks mate. Hey, i tried to download the DiskUsage from the market by Ivan Volosyuk and it says this app is not compatible with me device. WTF??? LOL
T2mo SGS3 16GB

Just delete the old roms from the download folder with a file explorer.
If you've been using Rom manager it puts them in its folder

Thanks again: Well. I wonder. What would happen if i FORMAT the entire internal card and then drop a rom in it, to flash. Would this make any sense if i want to make a clean FLASH?????
I think i'm missing something here. Has any body done this before? Format the whole card and start from zero again????
Thanks again and i wont forget to hit that thanks to you.

S clean flash is one where yoy have done a factory reset / wipe dalvik, cache and data.
If you reset from the settings menu it should wipe you back to an out of the box state, or a clean fresh rom installed state.
If you factory reset from cwm or twrp it will not wipe the internal sdcard.
Download your rom of choice to External sdcard, backup internal, factory reset ftom settings menu, reboot recovery and flash rom from external sd.
Earlier you were talking about not having enough space, can you not back up your int/ext to your computer?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Now we are talking. Yes, i have backed up all my files to my computer. I will give this a try and will report to you tomorrow. Thanks again mate
Hi again, Well. I did what you told me: Factory reset from Setting, backup/reset, FACTORY RESET. The phone went into CWM and a blue bar went from left to right in only 5 secondes and then Liquidsmooth jb rom started to boot. I let it finish and then rebooted into cmw and wiped everything posible there, from dalvik to cache pertition and did it 3 times just in case, then i flashe the new JellyFrost JB leak.
When i booted the phone and connected to PC i still have 0.98 BG free.
I wonder if i should format this thing from my computer in FAT 32 ????????
Or what i'm i doing wrong?????? I can see all the old files still there of program i have not installed yet....Crazy mess......Any idea....I feel like a D..k
I'm sorry man! Its because of the recovery. Hitting factory reset just rebbots recovery and uses the factory reset there. If you have cwm or twrp it won't wipe everything. Forgot about that.
Try this instead. I use twrp and in the Wipe menu there is an option to format data. If cwm has the same option try using that instead of factory reset. I think its there in case you do want to wipe everything.
Don't try to format the internal using your computer.
Internal sdcard is actually just part of the /data partition. If you go to /data/media it is the same thing as /mnt/sdcard or /storage/sdcard. The internal sdcard is not a separate partition itself.
Just to clarify from your last post. When you factory reset were your apps gone? When you were referring to parts of your programs left over, were you talking about the folders on the internal sdcard?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I think I get what you mean OP. I still have folders on my phone from apps I uninstalled weeks ago >.<
It's pretty obnoxious. Especially since most are empty.
You should have an option to format sd card under mounts and storage in cwr. This should do what you're asking. Make sure you have a rom ready to go on your external sd though, because this should wipe everything.
