Hi guys. I have the 16 GB White one.
I have flashed at least 20 different ROMS since i got this phone. Even though i always wipe all data and cache. I still can see files in the tree that belong to older roms. I have have files that say BACKED, another one that says AOKP and others. Right now i'm running on Liquidsmooth JB v2-RC3.
The major files i have are the backups from CWM. Two back ups: (stock and the present liquid jb) Booth together don't make more that 4GB. Then i have on pictures and videos less that 2 BG. What else could be taking my space? I should have more than 4 GB free and my phone says i only have 500 MB free.
Is there any way to delete everything on the phone to make it clean like when it came out? Buut that i could stil keep the rom i'm using. Or even if i have to do al over again. Can some one explain to me please. Any help with be appreciated. i'LL PUSH THAT THANKS BUTTON AGAIN AND AGAIN.
In recovery format data, system, and internal (and/or) external sdcard. OR get FX file explorer or solid explorer 2 (my favorites) explore the files and delete what u don't want

Another good app is call DiskUsage.
It will show you in a graphical form what is taking up so much space. It will work on internal and external and obviously you are rooted, so it has those functions too.
What if i delete something that wont let me boot again? Also i noticed that in the internal SD card tree, there are two CLOCKWORKMOD FILES
Clockworkmod
Clockworkmod Copy
Right now i only have one back up because i deleted LIQUID one. So, right now i only have the STOCK Rom backup. Wish is around 1.8 GB.
Why there are two CWM flies and booth have 1.8 GB. ??????????So, The stock rom takes me almost 4 GB ?????????????????????/ Thats crazy.
I'd like to delete everything and start again. But i'm affraid to delete any file that preventes me from booting into recovery at least......Thanks again mate. SORRY MY ENGLISH
Thanks mate. Hey, i tried to download the DiskUsage from the market by Ivan Volosyuk and it says this app is not compatible with me device. WTF??? LOL
T2mo SGS3 16GB

Just delete the old roms from the download folder with a file explorer.
If you've been using Rom manager it puts them in its folder

Thanks again: Well. I wonder. What would happen if i FORMAT the entire internal card and then drop a rom in it, to flash. Would this make any sense if i want to make a clean FLASH?????
I think i'm missing something here. Has any body done this before? Format the whole card and start from zero again????
Thanks again and i wont forget to hit that thanks to you.

S clean flash is one where yoy have done a factory reset / wipe dalvik, cache and data.
If you reset from the settings menu it should wipe you back to an out of the box state, or a clean fresh rom installed state.
If you factory reset from cwm or twrp it will not wipe the internal sdcard.
Download your rom of choice to External sdcard, backup internal, factory reset ftom settings menu, reboot recovery and flash rom from external sd.
Earlier you were talking about not having enough space, can you not back up your int/ext to your computer?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Now we are talking. Yes, i have backed up all my files to my computer. I will give this a try and will report to you tomorrow. Thanks again mate
Hi again, Well. I did what you told me: Factory reset from Setting, backup/reset, FACTORY RESET. The phone went into CWM and a blue bar went from left to right in only 5 secondes and then Liquidsmooth jb rom started to boot. I let it finish and then rebooted into cmw and wiped everything posible there, from dalvik to cache pertition and did it 3 times just in case, then i flashe the new JellyFrost JB leak.
When i booted the phone and connected to PC i still have 0.98 BG free.
I wonder if i should format this thing from my computer in FAT 32 ????????
Or what i'm i doing wrong?????? I can see all the old files still there of program i have not installed yet....Crazy mess......Any idea....I feel like a D..k
I'm sorry man! Its because of the recovery. Hitting factory reset just rebbots recovery and uses the factory reset there. If you have cwm or twrp it won't wipe everything. Forgot about that.
Try this instead. I use twrp and in the Wipe menu there is an option to format data. If cwm has the same option try using that instead of factory reset. I think its there in case you do want to wipe everything.
Don't try to format the internal using your computer.
Internal sdcard is actually just part of the /data partition. If you go to /data/media it is the same thing as /mnt/sdcard or /storage/sdcard. The internal sdcard is not a separate partition itself.
Just to clarify from your last post. When you factory reset were your apps gone? When you were referring to parts of your programs left over, were you talking about the folders on the internal sdcard?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I think I get what you mean OP. I still have folders on my phone from apps I uninstalled weeks ago >.<
It's pretty obnoxious. Especially since most are empty.
You should have an option to format sd card under mounts and storage in cwr. This should do what you're asking. Make sure you have a rom ready to go on your external sd though, because this should wipe everything.

THE FIX IS BELOW (it's the quote)
My description of my problem is below but, first off I want to say that I have made several searches on google, androidcentral, and xda about this issue and have found no solution. I have also attempted to trouble shoot the problem myself by fixing permissions, wipes, flashing backups, deleting really old backups, etc. I even purchased SD Maid Premium and deleted duplicates and ran the appcleaner.
I am running CM10. I use Titanium Backup and Clockwork Recovery Mod to backup my system and apps regularly. I was running CM10 with KT Kernel (and used KTweeker to undervolt my processor) but recently flashed a new CM10 nightly (with a fully factory data, cache, and davilk cache wipe) and kept the "baked-in" Cyanogen Kernel.
I got a notification that my internal storage was close to full (this happened right after making a backup using CWM, I was running CM10 and KT kernel at the time and had 4 additional older nandroid backups). So I went through my apps, pictures, videos, old backups etc and deleted a bunch of stuff. But I still had the storage full notification. I then wiped data, cache, and davilk cache, and flashed the latest CM10 d2att nightly and gapps4.1. Before installing any apps I went to check my storage in Storage Settings, Apps Settings, and SD Maid . In App Settings and SD Maid it showed 7.5gb used and 4.5gb free, but in Storage Settings it showed 0.4gb used and 11.6gb free. (In my research I found that this may be because my ROM (CM10) is odexed). I have done some exploring using Root Explorer and found that my /data file is 7.5gb, i have a file /storeage/sdcard0 that is also 7.5gb and a /storage/sdcard1 that is 2.3gb.
I have come to the point where I just want to fully wipe my phone and start over; i think it is called a hard reset. It would be more than a Factory Data Wipe, which I have done several times in Clockwork Recovery Mod and it always leaves behind 7.5gb of data in my storage. I dont mind loosing all my data, media, etc. It would be nice if there was a solution that did not require a "hard reset" but I am willing to do it if that is my only option. I am familiar with download mode and odin in case that needed for the hard reset.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

Fixed.
First I took all my media and files I wanted to save and transferred them over to my external sd card. Then I downloaded the zip files for the latest CM10(any rom will do) , gapps, and ktoonz kernel and transferred those over to my external sd card.
Then I rebooted into recovery. I went to mounts and storage and formated /system /data /cache and /sdcard
After that I flashed the zip files I downloaded earlier from my external sd card.
Rebooted and took this screen shot.

You can go to mounts and storage in cwm and format everything. That pretty much wipes you clean. Fixed a similar problem I was having.

Will this delete a ROM (.zip) (that I would flash after the formating) from my /sdcard?

It's an issue between our GSIII and rom manager, go to settings, then storage, then miscellaneous, wait for it to load, select rom manager, hit the delete key. This will not un install the program it will however delete your nandroids backups.
From now on only make your nandroids while in recovery and always choose ext-sd for output.
This is what fixed it for me. Please let me know if it works for you.

Cleared Data in Settings, Apps, Rom Manager. Backups are still there, I have one recent backup and a backup called "blobs" that I never made. Come to think of it, blobs showed up around the time the problem started. I read somewhere not to delete it though. What is blobs?
Also I'm still looking into formating /system /data /cache etc. Will that possibly brick my phone? Any tips?

You're on cyanogenmod 10 right.
0 is the phones internal storage and 1 is the ext-sd
Btw why are you should probably ditch rom manager in favor of rom toolbox pro-if you do you'll get rid of those pesky blob files
I love rom manager for its ease of use but had to ditch it because it's blobs take up so much space on my gs3, at least until they update it to allow backups to be sent to the ext-sd. again.

Is there any reason to think that this won't work on the verizon version with cm10.1
i had an 8gb legacy folder after doing a full wipe and reflash.. just deleted it and everything works
I didn't notice this 0 folder issue until today. Up until now I was wondering why some files seemingly disappeared etc. Then I noticed too much space unavailable. This copy this over there and all that was not working so here's what I did:
Copy what you want to keep from internal sd to external sd
Get zip of your current rom and copy to external sd
Nandroid to external sd
Remove external sd from phone
Boot into recovery
Wipe everything, data, cache, dalvik 3x for good measure
Insert external sd
Reboot recovery (ignore no OS warning)
Flash rom (creates a clean file system and installs rom)
Reboot into rom and let it load
Reboot into recovery
Factory wipe, cache, dalvik
Restore your Nandroid backup
Reboot
Tada
/storage/sdcard0 is the mount path for your internal sd card. /storage/sdcard1 is your external. /storage/emulated is the location used for the emulated card in Android 4.2 for multi user support
I have been reading different threads about this subject and I just want to be 100% sure before I do anything. I tried a 10.1 ROM and got the emulated /0 folder. I then switched back to a TW based rom. At the time I didn't know why so I just copied all my folders back to internal and everything was back to normal. However, this folder can not be deleted, atleast by all the methods I tried. I always get the protected message. I know it isn't causing any issue, I just like things to be organized. My main question is, if I format my internal sd what, if any, issues will I have, ie. will I need to reflash my ROM or will all those items be untouched? All my important data is already on my external sd and also backed up to my PC. I have read conflicting threads on this subject and on other non-phone devices I have used in the past it was always warned about bricking the device by formatting internal. This is why I am being overly cautious, probably without needing to be. I have just read to many bad stories of people not being cautious. Current phone setup is Frosty 11.6 running TWRP recovery. Thanks in advance for helping me out.

I don't know if i can help but, i usually format everything before a fresh install, first i manually do factory reset, then wipe cache, dalvik, system, then i use a script or zip file to wipe all including internal sd, the script won't touch the external sd, so basically it's a clean slate when installing a new rom just to prevent conflicts coming from another rom. I save my pictures, downloaded files including rom, kernel, themes, zip files necessary to set up or do a fresh install or whatever that's important to me on my external sd and back it up on my pc too.

Those are the steps I follow also except the internal wipe. I've seen the zips for them, I think I'm going to do this manually today. Unfortunately dj is no longer going to support Frosty and had the thread closed, so time to find new ROM. There are a couple that have been updated recently that look interesting and I figured that would be the best time to wipe my internal. I appreciate your response.

Everytime I flash a ROM I seem to lose internal memory. In the past week of flashing and testing, I went from 9GB to 5GB, all with the same applications. So I'm looking to do a full internal wipe. However, I'm not sure if it will delete the ROM currently installed on my phone. Will be using this MOD http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2097359 to wipe the internal but I don't want to screw anything up and have to ODIN back to stock because I didn't understand something. If I use the MOD to wipe the internal, will it delete my ROM? Can I simply restore a backup? I'm probably looking more into this then it actually is, but I don't want to wipe the internal and be surprised with something I wasn't prepared for.

It could be that flashing the ROM is backing up all the previous data in another folder.
All of your current ROM data is stored in the main folder labeled sdcard or sdcard0 (or sometimes 0). You might see another folder labeled 0 within that folder with the data from the previous flashing. With each subsequent flash, the new ROM might make yet another 0 folder to store all the previous stuff, including the data prior to that one.
So then, the directory would look something like ROM inception, i.e., directory looking like sdcard\0\0\0\.... Those additional 0 would be the data from all your previous flashes.
Get back to us if that's what you see lingering in your phone's internal SD.
Well from what I see under "storage", I have an "emulated" folder that has the "0" directory and a "legacy" directory which both show all the folders in my internal. Also under storage, it shows "sdcard0" and "sdcard1" (my external sdcard). So i don't know if they are backups or not.

Hello! I've only been working with Android for a good year but the only devices I've used have had SD cards so I've only ever backup'd, and flashed via an SD Card.
I understand I must either get an OTG cable or push through ADB to get the files on my device after wiping through TWRP right? I've already unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP, and rooted through CF.
Is there anywhere I can move the ROM files too in the phone's internal storage that'll stay there after wiping my System, Data and Cache through TWRP so I can select them to flash right afterwards?
Thanks for helping me, I understand it's a noob question!)

Wiping data will not wipe your data/sdcard, so you can download the files normally (directly on the device using a web browser, or USB MTP, etc).

Ah.
CM's File Manager calls it "internal storage" as does Android. ES File Explorer calls it "SD card." You say "tomato" and I say "tamato..."
At any rate, a factory reset will indeed wipe the internal storage/sd card. The ROM the OP is trying to flash will no longer be there. Ask me how I know this.
For what it's worth, here's how I do it.
1) Back up that which I can't reload. Pictures automatically upload to Dropbox for me. Music I can always resync. Your mileage may vary.
2) Factory reset. If I'm feeling lazy or the ROM developer says it's OK, I'll wipe just the cache and dalvik, then flash away. Feeling lazy usually means more work in the end, so I try to avoid that option.
3) Reboot. Once the setup wizard runs... I do not sign on to Google so that it won't try to restore my apps and settings... I mount the internal storage and transfer the ROM zip to the device. I do not download anything directly to my device, but rather my desktop. First off, I trust the internet connection more, second, I can run the thing past my antivirus before I load it on my device. I then transfer it to the root directory of the device.
4) Boot into recovery and wipe the cache, dalvik and system. I then flash the ROM. If there are other files that need to be flashed before the first boot, I do so one at a time. When I'm done, I'll wipe the cache and dalvik one more time, then boot into the system and run the wizard.
When I first got into Android with the Droid Incredible, I was a flashaholic. It'd be nothing to flash three or four times a week. I quickly learned what worked and what didn't. Knocking on wood, I've never come close to bricking a device and usually don't invite trouble by sticking religiously to my routine. That's not to say that I never got a tightening feeling in my nether regions when a device seemed to hang on the splash screen a bit too long.
ROM development is far more sophisticated now than in those days. With both the Rezound and now the S4, I've pretty much hung with one developer and his product and don't flash nearly as much, especially since the ROMs of today are far more stable. But the basic procedure remains the same. The above procedure is modified from my phones past and present, since the Nexus is the first device I've owned that did not have an external SD card, which isn't wiped on a factory reset. I also don't do a nandroid backup with the Nexus, since it's a fairly simple matter to reload a factory image using Wug's Toolbox. That's how I recovered from doing a factory reset and a system wipe on the Nexus... which also involved some tension in the posterior.

douger: the OP was referring to a factory reset/wipe in TWRP, which does *not* wipe the internal storage. I flash frequently on my Nex7 and LG G2, neither have external SD cards, both have TWRP, and I have never lost my data using this method. If you load TWRP and click [Wipe], the exact text is:
Factory Reset
Wipes Data, Cache, and Dalvik
(not including internal storage)

douger: the OP was referring to a factory reset/wipe in TWRP, which does *not* wipe the internal storage.

It did indeed blow out my internal storage when I first tried it. When I went to flash, there was nothing in internal storage. None of the usually folders, most certainly not the .zip I was looking for, nothing. Enter tension. :cyclops:
Perhaps the next time I'll try again. It'll save a few steps. I'll have Wug's Toolbox open just in case. :highfive:
In edit: I just looked. In TWRP version 2.7.0.0, I must have hit the "format data" button and didn't catch it. You sir are exactly correct.

TWRP wipe blew out your internal storage, or was it some other process? Your link pointed to a T-mo "master reset", which I'm sure isn't referring to a custom recovery. Unlocking the bootloader on my G2 completely trashed my internal storage, but I was expecting this. IIRC, Nexus devices have been more unlock-friendly, but loading a factory image will wipe everything, including internal sd.
Helpful hint for everyone (esp. the paranoid): get a cheap USB OTG to USB-A (female) adapter, and have a flash drive handy. Newer versions of TWRP can mount USB OTG, so it's a nice plan B if you can't get past recovery. They're cheap (<$5), small, and come in handy pretty often.
Yeah the N7 official TWRP definitely does not wipe internal storage. It says right in TWRP "wiping data without wiping /media" which means without wiping internal storage.
If your TWRP is wiping the internal you should make sure it isn't a modified version and TeamWin official.

To clarify, wipe data/factory reset wipes your internal storage (/data) but misses /data/media which is your 'sdcard', call it what you like
Assuming a custom recovery, I cannot speak for stock

Yes but your sdcard is to most and many your internal storage... What is factory reset wiping if it avoids everything you have on your sdcard, including files copied to the root of your internal storage?

I recently switched roms from Carbon to CM11 trying to find a rom where the bluetooth works. I did the factory reset and wiped everything but even before putting apps back on phone I only had about 2gb of space left. I thought factory reset would format and clean out the phone.
i believe you have to select option 'format sd card' to clean it out. make sure you have a backup of important stuff, i.e. pics, music, etc. or else move to external sdcard. make sure you have a ROM to flash afterwards also.!
err on the side of kindness
Even when I dona full clean install with a wipe of everything, my back up folders remain with a lot of space used in them, especially if you have a large titanium back up folder

Format sd option I assumed was for the external sd card. I can try re-flashing the rom doing that. As long as it doesn't wipe the external I'm good!
Is there a fix for bluetooth on 4.4.4?
think is option to format either. i dont use bluetooth but you could check your ROMs thread to see if others are having it and if theres a fix.

Thanks for the info. I'll check the cm thread. I know nobody seems to respond in the carbon thread when I asked about it. I really like the carbon better than the cm11. I work outside and live with the bluetooth headset all day long. It socks that I cannot seem to get it working.
When you wipe data its formating the /data partition if you want to wipe internal you have to choose to wipe internal SD card

Got it, on my next flash it is!
Just to clarify because some of the posts seem a little confusing. ..
If you factory reset from custom recovery it will preserve the internal sdcard. To wipe that you have to choose the format /data option. Wiping sd card I believe is for the external sd only. Ive never used that option though so I suppose I could be a bit off on that point.
Factory resetting from stock recovery formats the entire /data partition. There is no way to preserve the internal sdcard in this case.
