Maybe a dumb newbie question, but I thought I read somewhere that OTA updates could prevent one from unlocking or modding the phone at a later date. It might have been something else that was at issue, but the gist was to stay away from OTA updates.
Any ideas on this? Have any phones been limited by using OTA?

I think you can't get OTA updates if you are rooted... but you can unroot and re root after an update.
Sent from my LG-F240L using xda app-developers app

There's no guarantee you can re root after an update because they may have patched the exploit.
So if you want root I would suggest not updating until a dev says its okay.

I'm rooted, but I haven't installed the update yet.

I'm going for the update and I'm rooted. I'll let you guys know if root stays and if not if I'm able to re-root.
BTW the update is only 66MB

I tried to update but it says the servers are down and now I have to wait 48 hours.
Yes, they hang low

I installed the update from the "check for an update" screen. It downloaded, I told it to update, which it did. After the reboot, I rooted the phone and had no issues. I was NOT rooted prior to the update.

I'm rooted and just got error 0x13E trying to update.

I tried to unroot with su and it has made a mess of things. And the update still thinks I am rooted. And when I try to re-root it doesn't re-install SU.

Just as the voice of other, you can flash on a rooted device, the procedure would be:
flash stock recovery > apply ota > flash recovery via odin > flash latest root from recovery in recovery.
Can you actually flash it on the rooted phone? And what is the change log?

Thanks for this!
Watch this video if you're rooted and want to update:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KeZx65twLk
It will get you stock recovery back and you can manually install the update. Then just watch my how to root video after to get root back
Also, here is a mirror for the file:

LG8? The one on Sprint's site says LG4, as of 7/25.

Yup, because you have to flash the stock recovery via Odin to accept the OTA. Then you have to re-root by flashing back to CWM recovery and the teamwin root zip. Follow the QBKing77 video above to guide you through it

If you have CALEM then it's probably trying to upgrade you to CALG1, which is the update that removes universal search. If you're already on CALG1 it's something new...otherwise it's a few weeks old.

I would flash the stock rooted version of lg1, find herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 .
Also in that post is the apk got the universal search that the update strips out.

Flashing the root-injected LG1 through Odin as mrhaley30705 suggested will preserve all your apps and settings. If you're worried, do a nandroid first on to your external SD card (or pull it to your computer) before you flash, just in case. But you won't lost your apps and settings because it leaves /data untouched.

What is in LS980ZVH Update ??

Sprint website shows that they are working on latest update ZVH. is it 5.1 ?
According to the RDF at view-source:http://device.sprintpcs.com/LG/LS980-SPRINT/LS980ZVH.rdf, it is still Android 5.0.2 unfortunately. Maybe they backported some of the 5.1 memory leak fixes ... we can only pray, as I have to reboot my phone every few days at least - else it slows to a crawl. It never did that on KitKat - I'd often run it for weeks between reboots.
I'd bet it's the stagefright update and nothing else. If I remember right though, ZVG was listed as 4.4.2 for quite a while on the RDF page.

5.1.1 is coming I can't see why they wouldn't just push that with the stage fix.

Why push 5.1.1 when 6 if around the corner
Can't see the G2 getting 6.0 I mean lets be realistic here. I'm in fact surprised we are getting 5.1

I'll believe 5.1 when I see it. There's nothing more than rumor that the G2 will even get that.

Well I just received the update but I'm rooted with xposed and a lot of customization going on so I'll wait for a bit and see if it breaks anything. It says its the Stagefright fix it also says that its a big update use wifi blah blah blah...

Got the update. Seemed like a big download to be just Stagefright.

LS980ZVH 10/19/2015
Patch for critical security vulnerability ('Stagefright')
But more importantly...do we have new signal icons or no?

update ends in error
phone is rooted with stock rom so it's a no go to upgrade
How can I apply this update when I rooted & have TWRP. Is there a guide on how I can temporarily flash back the stock recovery, install this and then re flash twrp?
@EROMITLAB Yeah Sprint is retiring the spinning circle thing. But not in this zvh update.

My wife's phone downloaded the update, but it hasn't installed yet.. I'm trying to upload it to Dropbox and I'll post a link to it when I get it there in case anybody wants to look at it.. Her phone is rooted running stock with a Wi-Fi hack, and has twrp as recovery so I'm not sure how/if I want to apply the update yet..
Here's the link to the file. The original name was just update.zip, I renamed it for my own organizing..
