KronicaKernal Softbrick - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I appear to be the only person as far as I can tell whom is left softbricked and forced to CWM recover after installing chronickernals .zip from Sd card and rebooting in recovery mode. Are there any apps, configurations, or anything of interest that a noob like me should consider as to why my phone wont start after flashing the Kernal? Perhaps I should nandroid, re-root and try again before installing apps? Im dealing with a T-mobile galaxy s4. Sgh-m919.

i dont see that kernel in our development forums, so i assume its from the i9505 forum, in which case that is why your not booting. you can only flash roms from those forums, not kernels.

i dont see the kernel in our development threads, so im assuming you found it in the international versions development. while we can flash roms and kernels from the i9505, they are not guaranteed to work with our device, and we flash at our own risk. So it seems like this may be the case.
If you found the kernel in the i9500 forums, well then theres your problem
Or, you just need to go into advanced setting in clockwork mod and hit fix permissions.

I found it here. I notice the AOSP/CM on the thread. So.. I Suppose its either because im not using a i9500 or because of this Aosp/CM stuff. Are those rom managers or something? Because I have ClockworkMod's rommanager.

oh chronic kernel, didnt recognize it since you spelled it with a k. Try fixing permissions recovery and see if it boots then
also, i wouldnt recommend using rom manager and goo manager for flashing and stuff, ive had problems with them in the past, though thats just personal preference and experience

Thanks abunch. Since TWRP has an install option does that mean I can flash kernals without booting into recovery mode. Because ClockWorkMod still boots my recover, even without the app.

Pretty sure you have to boot into recovery mode to flash anything.

[Q] Flashing Roms, Recovery help

I got my Xperia Play R800x yesterday. Since then I have rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed crash team racing. I have been reading through the forms before and after getting my phone. But Im still confused on the whole flashing process. From what I could gather if I want to flash either a kernel or rom I must use fastboot. Which is a program you run on your computer while the phone is in fastboot mode (black screen, blue led). My problems are I have yet to find a DETAILED process on how to do this. I also am wondering if I were to install clockwork recovery if I could just flash roms and kernels through it. I know everyone on the form says they you cant but they all have locked bootloaders. The final thing Im confused about is flashtool. What is it used for? In one form is sounded like someone used it to unbrick there phone but Im still unsure. Any help that can straiten this up for me would be GREATLY appreciated.
Edit: If this helps you help me I have recently come from a droid X and HTC Eris. Both devices I know my way around them.
Oh and thanks for the people who posted in my last thread. THIS PHONE IS SICK!!!!!!!!
Dont have any answers for you since most of them are in the forum ; but a thing to point out is that since you have a r800x the amount of roms you can flash are limited.

Could I at least get some links. I have been digging around for a weak and still haven't found anything. Like I said I have an idea about everything I just need some help clearing it all up.
Ok, I finally found a form that explains flashtool and how to use it. But I still would like to know about the clockwork recovery.

You can flash roms through clockwork mod. But you can not flash kernels, the reason for this is both the kernel and recovery are held on the same partition /boot/, obviously flashing a kernel overwrites /boot/ partition so CWM cannot write to the same partition is it running from.
You can flash nandroid backups from CWM recovery
Your selection is limited tho because this phone has limited people working on it lol.
Yeah I know the CDMA rom department hasnt developed yet, but it will.
But you two are saying two different things. Can I only flash nand backups with the clockwork recovery or can I flash a rom. Thanks for clearing up the kernel part though.

Nice!!
Now when you say you were the first to make a rom that was flashable in clockwork recovery. Does this mean that the rom has to be specially made to be flashed with the clockwork recovery or is this just because everyone uses flashtool to flash roms?

To be flashed from recovery, a rom has to be in a certain format, and contain an update script and binarys that tell recovery when to mount and unmount partitions, what partitions and directories to copy the files to and what permissions need to be given to certain files/folders

How can I get CM10 while on UVALH3?

Could it be I was supposed to do this before flashing CM10? Because I simply rooted installed freegs3, wiped data and caches and all, then I flashed cm10. Was that the wrong way? Should I go back to stock and restart the process? Because right now for one, custom kernels are giving me strange issues. Also, a ktoonz kernel dev told me my log cat pointed towards corrupt partition or Rom, but I'm using cm10

pretty sure having a custom recovery isn't your issue if you are to the point of wiping caches and flashing kernels. The OP is asking how to wipe a stock ROM off and get CM on his/her phone i'm pretty sure.

No i do not. I tried rooting my phone and it didn't take, and you need to root before CWM right? I had CWM when I was on Uvalh2 but when I went through the process of Uvalh3 I guess I lost it. Should I go ahead and do it? I have the zip file in my phone, still.
I should also mention that when I go into recovery the android dude is fallen over, dead. I'm guessing that's a bad sign.
That just means you're on stock recovery. Odin a rooted rom which you can find in the dev forums (root without tripping flash), then install twrp or cwm, then flash cm10, then flash desired radio.

There are a couple possibilites here.
1) Your recovery is outdated. Update it. CWM will work just as well as TWRP. A lot of people have been advertising TWRP like they are being paid to do so. Either will work fine, but it must be updated to the latest version. The "CWM makes you lose IMEI" slander is starting to get old as well. There have been several documented cases on this forum where people have lost IMEI using TWRP. That's of course assuming the custom recoveries are actually causing it. We don't even know that. In any case, a reboot nvbackup would prevent all of this nonsense. I can't believe people still aren't doing this.
2) You are attempting to flash roms that are not for your device. Please give us a forum link to the rom you are attempting to flash.

This spreadsheet doesn't prove anything. I see 18 CWM IMEI losses. 3 of which are on CWM v6. Out of 116 users reporting. The vast majority of reporting users are using CWM with success. This is hardly evidence. If anything, it implies CWM is more popular than TWRP. But, there is no proof of that in the spreadsheet, either. You would need thousands of reporting users to establish any kind of usable baseline. Last I checked, no one is sure why the IMEI loss happens or what, exactly, causes it. People do have their suspicions (or superstitions), though. I've flashed hundreds of files with CWM, and never had a single issue. And so have thousands of other XDA forum members.

But no one lossed it using TWRP, that's my only point. With out a doubt CWM is more popular, think of it this way. More people are going to respond and or look for a thread regarding the issue compared to those (TWRP) users who never had the issue, I've been on CWM for a couple weeks try to lose my IMEI and haven't done so yet. Either way I'm not defending either but trying to help people out.

To be 100% sure when people say recovery they mean the programs like CWM or TeamWin and so on right ?
Is it bad for the device to change often the recovery software ? cause i have done that couple of times, started with TeamWin and later on ended up with CWM.
But the thing is that the problem is the installation process, it does not matter what ROM i use i get still the same error.
And for the Philz Touch could you copy the name of the link that i should download, they all look the same and way more links that i am used to.

The reason you can't install any rom is because you do not have the latest version of CWM installed. You should always install the newest version when you install any recovery.
The newer roms are using an updater-script that will not work on CWM 6.0.4.7. Install an updated recovery and then install the rom that you want.

To answer your question no yes maybe. Travel around through XDA and read/learn and you will understand.
as for philz i would try this one https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/lt02wifi/philz_touch_6.44.9-lt02wifi.zip
in general find a recovery that works for you and stick with it until an update is actually called for.

good to hear you got it sorted. CM just isn't happening yet. just watch the forum like a hawk like everyone else is...:cyclops:
If your worried about destroying your tab you prolly shouldn't have come to mod it.I know sounds like a douche bag thing to say but even putting on the flash or roms that go with the tab can destroy your tab if done improperly or even if they glitched while flash which does happen or even worse power outage when flashing.

Nono it is okey to say something like this, but the thing is i like to learn this stuff, took me about 3 days to learn how to flash a BIOS on a computer but when i got the hang of it i learned it.
I am scared of destroying the tablet but how else would i learn ? cause reading does not always help But i got it back up again. And i knew when to ask for help.
But the RocketTab looks to work well at least for know, but would love CM mod couse i have it on my S4 and when and with the RocketTab i only get android version 4.1.2

[Q] Clockwork Mod and TWRP not working

Hey folks,
I have tried this with 2 GS 3's, and I have even tried multiple different versions of twrp just to make sure, and I still have the same issue. I flashed Clockwork Mod and twrp using Flashify and Odin, however when I actually go to make Nandroid back up, or flash anything, I get the "can't mount" messages from CWM and an empty folder from twrp. I have attached pictures to show the issue. As I said, I tried multiple methods, and multiple versions, on 2 separate devices, yet came to the same end. Does anyone know anything about this?
Really? No one? lol
ok , just throwing this out there... are you using latest twrp , what about the 'fix permissions' option , tried installing via fastboot from laptop (?). sorry dont have more. still newb-ish myself.
last screenshot says 'no OS' , you have no ROM on your phone(?).
also , are some knowledgeable folks on this thread...

If by fast boot you mean use Odin in my laptop, then Yessir I did. Both with clockwork mod and twrp. Everything downloads and installs fine. It's the actual functionality that is dysfunctional. It says I have no os, but I do have my stock Rom on there and it boots just fine. Thank you so much for actually responding, it means a lot. I'll look into the that and hopefully find some info

Do you have the i747m or i747? If you have the i747m, try re-flashing a completely stock ROM from sammobile.com.

I have the i747M. A completely stock rom? As in a Samsung stock rom? Would I go about doing it the same way as any other rom? Because my recoveries aren't working so I'm not able to do a Nandroid back up. As such I'd rather not do anything until I am able to do a Nandroid back up.
You're installing the latest recoveries for the d2lte, right?

d2lte? I don't understand, could you elaborate further?
The only recovery that works for the i747m is made for the d2lte. I think you maybe be flashing the wrong recovery.

I downloaded CWM and TWRP from a couple pages online. I'll try finding their links.
Is this link the correct version of CWM?
That is the correct link.

You, sir, are a God send. Thank you. But I must ask, even within the i747m there are different versions? Why?

All s3 phones sold in Canada are identical hardware-wise. It's only the carrier customizations that make them appear to be different.
You can flash a stock Rogers 4.4.2 over a stock Telus 4.4.2 with no problems. In fact, I have done it myself.
Prior to unified ROM and recovery builds for the s3, the AT&T s3 was referred to as the d2att while the Bell/Rogers/Telus s3 was referred to as the d2can. With unified builds, they are collectively referred to as d2lte. The only two things that are not interchangeable between the i747 and i747m are the modems and bootloaders.
Installing GS3 Rogers...but not really
Hello,
I tried to use the CM installer app/windows install which appeared to work but upon a first reboot a couple of questions pop up asking about if I want root and that the ROM might request a stock recovery. I answered these questions 7 ways to Sunday but it will not boot to CM. I can get in to the recovery screen but that is about it.
Something wrong?
thanks,
If you are stuck at the CM boot logo, try wiping cache, dalvik, and data in recovery?

Hi
I'm not stuck at the CM logo, in fact it just boots in to the stock Rogers environment. I can get in to the recovery menu but all I have is
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
I wiped the cache...no improvement.
I recommend you not use the CM install app as it can be hit and miss for some phones.
Before flashing anything, I recommend you verify the bootloader on your phone and post the version here.
