Hspa+ vs lte - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Just wondering if setting my phone to use hspa+ uses less battery than lte?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium

Hspa plus will use less battery since it has more coverage. Compared to lte. Itll be a waste of battery if lte radio band is searching for lte when there is none. The speeds are great on lte. But if battery life is what youre after hspa has satisfying speeds.
All in all... hspa+ is already fast enough to not need lte. LTE is the bugatti and HSPA+ is the ferrari 458. Its great but not as great as lte

Couldn't you just try it and find out for yourself? There are lots of other factors that are going to come into play when it comes to battery life. Every one of us is going to have different strengths of signal so no 2 of us are going to have the same experience.

Where I in live I have consistent lte, I was just wondering if using lte in of itself uses less battery like how using edge is supposed use less than than 3/4g

As others have said, your mileage will definitely vary on this one. In my case: great coverage available with both technologies and no significant battery life difference between the two.

My experience is that LTE uses battery notably faster than hspa. At work I have full bars for both. There is a cell site EXTREMELY close to the office.

In my case I've found that I've gotten better battery with 1 bar with LTE than I had with full bars on HSPA so...

AT&T Galaxy Nexus Speed Test Results

I know there are a lot of threads out there for speed tests, however most of which are aimed at the CDMA version of the phone on the verizon wireless network.
If you are on the AT&T network, post the results of your SpeedTest.Net results.
Get the SpeedTest.Net app here
That's a good usable speed, but for HSPA+ I don't think it's that good. I've never used HSPA+ but from what I've seen others get I'm just throwing that out there.
This is what I generally average in NJ on AT&T. Acceptable.
HSPA+ its not bad but the att lte rocks (if available in your area)
Would put a picture but I am not allowed to post pics on this forum for some reason.
Below is the picture. I could not edit my post and add it so I had to repost a new thread.
For mobile speeds on a faux 4G its not bad. Good upload speed. I am raving on the lte network about their speed tests. Its blazing fast.
You think att will offer a Nexus lte device like Verizon?
Anyways just wanted to post the lte speed test for my skyrocket.
I know its not the nexus but wanted to show their lte speeds incase an lte version of the Nexus was released in March like the rumor has it planned.

This is also about average for just outside of Manassas, VA (@ work). At home (up in the eastern panhandle of WV) I average about 4.5 or so. In DC I've gotten both really good speeds (8-9 MBPS) and pretty slow speeds (~ 1 MBPS), so it is definitely dependent upon the tower you are connected to and throughput/backhaul it has installed...
I'm getting between 6-7.2 mbps down in Austin TX, with LTE provisioned in my at&t account and using the PTA APN.

No LTE for t-mobile gs3

I read that even when t-mobile jumps on the lte band wagon in 2013, that our gs3 phones will not be able to take advantage of the new speeds (what a drag). I'm not sure if this is really the case, but I posted the link to the article below.
http://www.galaxys3newsblog.com/t-mobiles-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-miss-lte-yet-another-dissappointment/
One thing you have to remember you always want to buy a phone that works right now for you not a phone that would work better in the future, I'm happy with hspa+ and by the time I get lte from tmobile I might have another phone anyways so I think I'm cool with that, it bee discuss in another topic too
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
This is true. I just thought that I would post this for those who didn't have the benefit of reading the other post. For those that don't change their phones often and intend on keeping the gs3 for some time, I thought that this was good information to help them make a well informed purchase. I hope this helped anyone that didn't know and wants to buy a gs3.
My HSPA+ speeds are consistanly faster than my friends Verizon LTE. Plus HSPA+ uses dramatically less battery. Heres my speeds in Detroit.

Same here in San Diego. Verizon was fast out of the gate but they heavily over-subscribed their network and now they are lame. AT&T is the crazy fast at the moment but I expect them to be in the same boat as Verizon this time next year.

Practicly yes on stock 4g shows when you connected to umts(3g), hspa and hspa+(t mobile calls this 4g cause it could go up to 42mbps) but if you changed yours to stock look ( aosp) you will see your phone going at all of them and won't stay connected to one at all times, you might no notice because their 3g is not crazy slow where you live, I have good coverage specially where I live and work so I don't mind it

LTE is NOT 4G. They all call it that, but it's more like 3.9G. LTE-Advanced will be 4G when it is finalized and deployed on carrier networks next year.

I personally don't notice much difference by leaving LTE on versus turning it off. I usually get 2 days of use on a full charge. My results may be skewed a bit cause the lte signal is weak in my area, so my phone automatically switched over to 3G.

Give me a break man. I know what 4G is constituted by but with the carriers pushing out their crap (HSPA+ as 4G) calling LTE 4G is a happy medium.
And I was just trying to figure what the hell that guy was talking about when he said 4G. LTE, WiMax, Real 4G, dumb AT&T/T-Mo 4G?
If I understand correctly. The s4 processor has the lte integrated in such a way that is a bit more battery efficient than a snapdragon s3 device with lte.
This might be better in the Verizon form as they have LTE (we do too but in 5cities).

T-Mobile HSDPA maxes out at 8mbps

Doing recent speed tests on my Note II, I've noticed that on the download, they go no faster than 8mbps, in fact, they all now consistently hover around 8mbps in the best of scenarios. On lower signal, it is obviously lower, but my speedtests on HSPA+ are almost all perfectly around 8mbps give or take 5kbps. Is anyone else noticing this? Has T-Mobile realized it might not be the best idea to give everyone access to all the available bandwidth and instead is limiting everyone to 8mbps? That's actually pretty smart.. I'm locates in Virginia a beach and I've tested on several different cellsites. All the same download speed. Used to get as much as 27mbps.
LTE seems unaffected but it maxes out around 27mbps now, but LTE technically isn't official here (;
I think the fix is to change your apn back to the epc.tmobile that we used to have.

I think it has something to do with the LTE radio as my s3 would get into the 20's on HSPA, still does. I don't get higher than 15 mbps in my Note, same area and everything. I have yet to change apn settings to old one as anything over 8 is fine honestly. Still getting over 4 upload, so no worries.
I do think if you Change it and LTE comes to your area, change it back and should be there.

lte turned on in fairfield ca fast speeds
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Except if T-Mobile is doing this intentionally, it's not very good for them to not make their customer base aware of this. Like I said, no single user needs access to as much of the bandwidth as the tower + spectrum permits, 8mbps down limit can guarantee equal QOS for everyone on HSDPA. But they really need to make a public announcement about it. And those LTE speeds aren't very good for a network in which no one else is using. But it will probably be better when LTE is official in our areas.
I get 8-14 in NYC.
Im in Dallas, TX and on my stock Note 2 i can get 10-15 megs down with 1-2 up in most places.
Thats with the fast.tmo apn. At least in my market they are not capping at 8megs down, thats if they are doing that at all.

I guess you can go to the extreme of saying tmobile is lying to you, but in reality no they're not. "4g" just shows when data activity is happening. You are barely over edge speeds though. I would say try different radios and such and look at the map from this post and play around to see which will help you specifically. In the mean time put your phone to edge only so you stop wasting battery lol. [Baseband] ALL T999(V) Modems! w/ MAP and Data Tweaks!

They are misleading intentionally.
Start a big download and go to the dialer, input *#0011#. Take note of the band you are on (2 or 4) and which items have a 1 on them out of HSPA and HSDPA. If you are on band 2 and see a one next to either of those options, you can try forcing 1700 by using *#2263# and choosing it under WCDMA. This will cause you to lose service if you have poor 1700 coverage, particularly for voice calls but you can always set it back by going back to the main 2263 menu and hitting automatic.
If those don't work or you see zeroes have you gone into phone status to see if you have an IMEI? Because that will lock you to UMTS. Shortcut to find out - *#06#

I was assuming that you were on a TouchWiz ROM (these codes only work on the Samsung dialer) based on the fact that you had a 4G icon up there - if you're not on stock, there's not an easy way to troubleshoot. If you are on stock, you have to use the built in dialer, not a third party app.
Its worth the time to go to a TW ROM to try to troubleshoot it but if your IMEI came up fine then its less worth the hassle. Wish I could help you out more but it looks like you might be in a highly congested area on the network :/

T-Mo is not lying. You're still on their 4G network, but as someone mentioned, it's probably congested. Additionally, for most areas, T-Mo's 3G and 4G network is the exact same technology. If you're paying for the 4G service, they take the "speed limiter" off. Simple as that. Most likely a bad area of Cali for T-Mobile.

I'd like to see your sources for this because 3G UMTS, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+, and true 4G LTE are all different technologies. UMTS maxes out at 384Kbps, HSDPA ranges from 7 to 21Mbps, HSPA+ is up to 21Mbps but includes HSUPA for up to 5.76Mbps upload, and DC-HSPA+ is up to 42Mbps on the downlink with the same 5.76Mbps upload of standard HSPA+. 4G LTE can exceed 100Mbps.
While its true that they all operate off of wideband CDMA technology, they are NOT the same and require tower upgrades... T-Mobile does not discriminate based on your data plan. They discriminate based on your data usage compared to the plan you purchased and throttle you when you exceed what you paid for. Plain and simple.
Get your facts straight before you spout off nonsense.
EDIT: I am not aware if T-Mobile has deployed pico cells for UMTS anywhere but if they have, UMTS can go up to 2Mbps on a pico cell.
