i bought a note 2.. to repair.. but water damage - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

hi...guys...
i bought a note 2 tmobile version, it said "to repair" has a bad digitizer etc etc...ok so far...i thought.. i buy a new lcd and it'll be ok.. but the thing in this phone is that i read " battery water damage has been activated" and its like i didnt read it. according to the item description. the phone charge the battery, turn on (the buttons lights up but need a new lcd/digitizer in order to see the display working) and you can see the phone files on the pc.... obiously i made a big mistake here... the question that comes to me: it is possible that the phone still works, (or is there a possibility to fix it), i mean.. a phone with water damage turn on, charge and can it be plugged in the pc? i dont have the phone yet..

It's unlikely to work, but try placing the phone inside of a bag dry rice for a day or 2. It draws moisture out of the phone.
Also, maybe it is only the battery that is damaged, not the phone.
I am unsure about how to fix water damaged phones though. Hopefully you get it working, sorry about your phone

+1, it's internals are working if it powers on, so we known it's not completely broken

i hope you guys be right, i sent him a message and here is the answer :
the water marker on the phone is pink but the one on the battery is fine. I bought this from someone as is. All I know is it seems to work. Computer recognized it, charger light works, and menu buttons light up when pressed. Haven't heard sounds from it but I assumed the volume is turned down

It might just be ok man just try to fix it and see

Rice is really poor dessicant. It's better than nothing but if you can get your hands on a good amount of silica gel that would be better. Dell ships their pc's with a big bag of silica gel in the box. Check your local best buy and see if they have any that they pulled from pc boxes that you can have. If not, you might be able to get it at home depot or Lowe's or maybe a shipping store like the UPS or FedEx store.

wtf just happened to my phone's usb port?

just washed it off with a little soap and water and it went haywire. red LED came up. no water entered the port. moved connector around and LED went off. went to plug in and physically wouldn't connect to the charger. played around with it more and now it appears the connector is entirely damaged/not present. wtf? how can I get this replaced?

should have been more specific. i put a little bit of soap and water on the screen and the case, not on the sides or top/bottom of the phone.

Water/Soap (water in general) on a phone = bad period. wtf would you do that seriously??
As for getting it replaced walk into a store and just tell them it will no longer connect. but don't tell them what you did seriously. and never do that again.
indeed... strange that I cannot even physically insert the cable. anyway, got in touch with Sprint's chat line and the guy noted my account to walk in tomorrow and get a replacement. gotta love the service.
I don't have insurance. The phone is covered by a one-year warranty. The port failed to connect to a USB cable. see where I'm coming from?

Then you're out of luck. Someone walking into the store and saying "Care sent me here for a replacement" is an automatic defensive stance. We hate when customers say that.
If you haven't just gotten very lucky from sprint about replacement..two things one and it's weird but works..drop phone in dry rice overnight..it absorbs any water from phone..then make sure that moisture tags aren't on the phone by battery connector..no expert by any means but this website and it's members have saved my hide many many times with tips and tricks..hope this helps.

don't see how I'm out of luck. the failure of the USB port is directly attributable to a defect by the manufacturer. Sprint exchanges these devices and sends the defective units to Samsung(with a receipt, which I don't have, but the guy I spoke with said he could either have one for me in three days or note the account appropriately). everyone wins.

No, you put a little bit of water on your screen and it created a short somewhere that effected the charging port. Let me guess ... you conveniently failed to tell the customer care Rep that you were cleaning the screen with water when the charging port stopped working.
Defect by the manufacturer? Seriously? Does anyone take personal responsibility for anything anymore?

Sorry. I had to fight through a little laughter. Obviously water is a big no no..... But, a few years ago I accidentally washed an old ipod left on my pants pocket. Took out of washer, put in a bowl of rice and covered with saran wrap. 2 days later was like new. Somehow the rice absorbs water even out of the tiniest places. Give it a shot, not much else to lose as of now right.

I do hate to break it to you, but that isn't how it works. No customer service number, not even retention, has the authority to demand a technician give the customer a replacement device. The technician will inspect your device, probably trash the shoddy e-ticket created by care (although in violation of M&P to do so), and create a new one based on their decision. Can almost promise that you will be required to submit an Asurion claim

[Q] Resurrected my Epic from the toilet. One problem though.

Ok my one and a half year old son got a hold of my Epic Touch and I dont know for how long he had it in the toilet.I knew this day would come but I was hoping for it to be my girlfriend's original Epic, lol.
So I took it apart, dryed it real good with paper towel first, then with air and baked it in oven for a minute or two.
I put it back together and it works! Its amazing because after my son diped it in water it layed wet for about twenty minutes before I found it.
I have one question for those that have more knowledge about Epic's internals:
Everything works except the POWER BUTTON!Yes I can use the power button one time to turn on the phone but after that it doesnt work anymore.
I cant turn off the phone, bring up the shutdown/airplane mode menu or anything else,in order to turn off the phone I need to pull battery.
Yes I took it apart again cleaned everything with rubbin alcohol inside and still same problem, any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Oh,is there any apps out there that can map power button to search or home buttons?

Do not power it back on.. Put it in a sealed bowl and fill it with rice. Leave it there for at least 24hrs. Even longer if you want the best result. It takes water damage a couple of weeks to really rear its ugly head. Sofar rice seems to be the best bet.
Good luck.. Report back to help out others with this same prob.
Definitely try the rice trick... I would recommend doing that before baking your motherboard in the oven.
The only time I've ever heard of baking any electronic device in the oven is for the Xbox 360...

Im starting to think that too,im gonna try reflashing and see what happens.Power button does work to turn the phone on but after this it doesn't.
I just don't want to reflash because i been running Blazer 4.0 for 3 months now(the longest i ever went without flashing, lol) and i added all types of custom apk"s to that rom.I would usually extract apk files from this rom and pit them in the new one but i odexed it,so no it looks like im going to have to make a whole new rom and that's a day gone.
He has already gone far and above the rice trick. That would be repetitive and unnecessary.
Also, rubbing alcohol is not a good solution. It leaves a film on the metal that is highly corrosive. You need denatured alcohol.
The power button has a two step contact. That button most likely needs to be replaced. You can order cheap on a wholesale parts website.

Finally someone understands it.I don't think power button needs replacement because i use the power button to turn on the phone, lol. But after that power button doesn't work. The power button only works one time-to turn on the phone but that's it,so its not the button that's defective. Its gotta be software related or one of the chips that controls power button after the phone is on is fried.
I didnt kno the e4gt was out that long lol.. Either way anything could be going on.. It was dropped in water lol

Try button remapper to resolve the power button ordeal. I personally would ditch the search button and use that as the new power button.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The likely reason its not functioning after you power on is a short somewhere created by the liquid. When powered off the short is not affecting but once on it disables the button. I dont think you can replace that button unless you've got some decent soldering skills and you cant really be sure that even that would fix it. Liquid is one of those wildcards when it comes to electronics. You dont know if your screwed from jump or if the liquid might rear its ugly head later... too unpredictable.

Lol the water emits an electrical shock when put in water which can damage any part of the phone.. Heating it up in a microwave is only resoldering the phone.. Wont fix an electrical shock that could have damaged a chip or a hardware button a led etc.. What would happen if you had a pc plugged in and dropped it in water while it was on? Just throw it in the microwave and itd be fine?

Damn it,now its serious, phone wont go into Download Mode. When i try to put it in download mode i push "up" key for "Yes" and it flashes for about one second download mode, well not exactly it flashes this:
ODIN MODE(in red letters)
Product Name:SPH-700
Custom Binary Download:NO
Current Binary:Samsung Official
Downloading do not turn off target
It flashes that for about one second then it starts to boot into android.Another thing that i noticed is when i power on the phone i get Samsung Galaxy S2 logo then it disappears then the phone reboots and i get Samsung Galaxy S2 logo second time and then it boots into android.
So it boots after second galaxy s logo.I can still boot into CWM though that's only good thing.
Has anyone encountered similar phenomenon before?

Waterdamaged Phone?

So my little sister dropped her phone in water the other day. It used to not power on whatsoever, then today I tried to turn it on and it sits at the HTC logo screen, nothing further. I can get it into the bootloader, but the recovery doesn't seem to load either. The bootloader is also locked. She didn't sync her contacts/calendar with Google properly, and has a lot of things she needs off of her calendar, so I'm wondering if there's a way to get this information seeing as I can't get onto the phone.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly helpful, thanks.
If the hardware is damaged and nothing is backed up, you may be out of luck. Don't know if you've tried this yet, but pull the battery and leave the phone and battery in a sealed ziploc bag full of uncooked rice for at least 24-48 hours. After removing them, clean the contacts on the battery and phone with a pencil eraser, pop the battery back in and give it a try.

It's in rice right now, I'll leave it there for a day and try my luck out. She tried turning it on last night and it powered all the way on but the touch screen wasn't working. Are there actual file backups of the calendar and such that I could copy off of her phone on my computer if I need to?
The water will corrode copper and metal contacts over Time.. I just revived a laptop main board that got beer spilled alll over it and did nothing by submerging it in 91% rubbing alcohol.. it cleans and evaporates fast! Not joking, just dry in front of a fan or such
But if chips or hardware are borked, ur s.o.l

If the touch screen doesn't register touches after taking it out of the rice, it may be just that the digitizer needs to be replaced. If you are fairly competent with electronics and have a set of precision screwdrivers, replacing the digitizer is something that can easily be done for a fairly affordable price. You can buy the parts on Amazon or eBay, find a tutorial video on Youtube, and do the job yourself for less than $20.

My Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded last night while I was sleeping

well not mine actually, but check the link. this is the first im hearing of anything like this...discuss
This is my first time posting so cut me some slack! Also not sure if this is the best place to post this.
Last night at about 3:15am EST (about 1 hour after i plugged it in and went to sleep) I was awoken by a loud noise and a weird squeaking sound. (I charge my phone while I'm sleeping on my bed right next to me)
So, I woke up, and saw a ton of smoke coming out of my phone -- it also smelled REALLY bad. Half asleep, I jumped out of bed and turned the light on, only to see that my phone was just beginning to go on fire. I dumped a glass of water I had in the room on it to stop it from burning...then woke up my brother to come help. The smoke smelled so bad and wafted through the entire second floor of my house. I had a foam mattress pillow top that had a hole burned through it too--which we later threw out because it was still burning throughout. Also, some of the plastic on my phone was melting and kind of shooting out of it, and some landed on my pinky finger and burned some skin off (very small burn though).
Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? Call Verizon? Samsung? Have a lawyer call them? I'd also like to get some type of replacement phone in the meantime...
Here are the pictures
EDIT: People keep requesting pictures of the battery. Here they are
ALSO: To answer many questions: EVERYTHING was stock/Samsung that I had received when I purchased my phone. Stock battery, charger, etc. Additionally, my phone was NOT rooted.
Edit 2: Thanks so much for all of your comments and insight. The real big question here is -- Do you think I have an actual legal case? As in, a product liability case. Or, do you think I'm better off taking what the PR team will give me? (Perhaps, a new phone, new mattress, etc)? I did not suffer any TRULY substantial damages to myself or personal property. I am really tossed up on this...Any advice would be appreciated.

If there's even a case. Sounds like he just wants to be reimbursed for the phone and damage done to his bed. It also sounds like he doesn't even care about the burn to his finger.
If he does file a lawsuit, I sure hope his phone was stock (I have no idea how they would check now) and that he was using the stock battery. I'm sure samsung is going to bring up the wall charger and micro usb cable as well.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Im sorry, but in my opinion, things like this shouldnt always warrant a lawsuit. Does anybody really think that Samsung is guilty of wrongdoing here? Yeah it sucks and is scary that it happened, but just file an insurance claim to replace the bed and phone and move on with life.
How many GS3s have been sold now, plus all the extra batteries and only one has done this? Pretty good if you ask me.
Sounds like it was probably just a faulty battery or something like that.
Anyway, like I said its just my opinion and thought id share it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I couldn't even tell that was still the battery since it had warped and expanded so much due to the explosion....now I'm not going to charge my S3 right next to my head when I sleep.
Reimbursement I vote in the least, I mean what's a "600$" phone gonna be for them lol, I assume it was a faulty battery I've read that before about it melting a case

Seems like in both cases of exploding iPod Touches, a lawsuit against Apple followed:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/digitalmusic/apple-sued-after-ipod-touch-exploded-in-boys-trousers-49301555/
http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2013/02/apple-sued-for-exploding-ipod-touch.html
This actually happened to me also so I know what he is going through. I set my phone down to charge. I woke up about an hour later to a plastic burning smell. I grabbed my phone and it was literally melting. Not on fire, just extremely hot and I ended up burning my fingers. I immediately pulled the battery out. Let it cool off (the smell didn't go away) and then it powered back on and has been charging normally ever since. It's kinda scary to think what would happen if I didn't wake up and notice my phone almost blowing up.

Wasn't aware they got the 4.1.2 update. That's a bmer though on all accounts. I live in Phoenix AZ and we see nothing but triple digits from may til august and I've never felt burnt by my phone, I'm lucky to have resistant skin I guess.

Oh yes they got it months ago. But this happened while charging, in the air conditioning. So there was no reason for it to be that hot. When I turned it on there was no program in the battery list which was eating up the battery so it is very strange.

galaxy note 2 completely dead

Hi I have a note 2 and replaced the screen completely before that the phone was working perfectly. I assembled everything back checked that everything was connected putted the battery tried to turned on and nothing. I also connected to the charger and still nothing no charging doesn't boot up. What could be happening here I double checked everything and nothing is missing if anyone could help me I'll appreciate it
Random guess, but like a computer you could have had static electricity and not grounded prior to working and fried your motherboard

man this is scary as I broke my screen on july 4th and is waiting for my replacement screen to arrive. I'm going to try to replace the screen myself. Maybe you broke a wire or something while you were detaching the screen from the digitizer.
Now i'm nervous about doing the screen replacement myself...oh wells, gotta save some money...lol
I think I know why it doesn't work is because I'm trying to use the n7100 screen on my sgh-t889 this version of t-mobile uses the n7105 screen and I bought the wrong one. That's why it won't work

Well, I hate to point out the obvious, but apparently that is not the case.
Did you wear some type of non-conductive gloves when you were doing this? handling circuitry with bare hands is a big no no. It is very possible that you ruined the device simply by touching it.
Here is what I would do (not anything but troubleshooting to pin point a possible problem really):
Warranty the thing.
Good luck.

I replaced my wife's phone with the n7100 and its working. Slowly try to back track everything and make sure everything is plugged and not broken. Was ut workibg before you replace it.

Agreed. .. except the warranty part. Samsung wore their gloves when building. It was the op that didn't.

Well here are my results the motherboard is not defective because I switched to another note 2 from tmobile and booted perfectly . I'm starting to think that the lcd display is defective

maybe a defective part..
How do you know the replacement screen is not bad itself..
have you tried connecting it to the computer and getting into download mode or seeing if the phone is ACTUALLY Working..Also a bad or cheap lcd could have shorted something out if you are sure you did not do so replacing it..
Sorry for your luck but it sounds like you need another note 2 phone for some testing. or RMA THE LCD and try another .
Good LUCK
