[Q] I Wanna Update To JellyBean.. But How?? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi guys..
This is my first time on this site. I dont know why I never found it sooner. Anyways. I have a Sprint Galaxy S2 Epic 4g Touch. I am currently on the fi27 I believe & I am rooted.
I would like to update to the JellyBean.
First off, can I go to JellyBean from the fi27, or do I have to go to the Fl24 first, then to JellyBean?
Do I have to unroot, before I do anything?
I hope I am asking all the right questions. I really have no clue what I am talking about. I had my friend try to explain it to me, but didnt work very well... My head isnt right at times. I have a brain tumor, so sometimes things are hard for me to comprehend..
So if someone could tell me what I need to do in order to get to JellyBean, from rooted fi27.. I would appreciate it.. Or if someone can guide me to the correct post that I would need to read that explains it..
Just anything to help me get to JB, & whatever Files or programs I need or whatever..
Really appreciate your guys help!! Means a lot...

Welcome to the site! If you aren't sure that you are rooted you can look for SuperSU

Rwilco has made a compilation of the stock roms (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252), which include Official JB Builds. When you feel confident about moving forward, you might also want to look at some of the other non-stock roms too. Good luck in your flashing!

To go from ics to jellybean flash in odin a one click for a jellybean rom. Super easy to do take a look at some stickies for guidance. Rwilco has the one clicks for you.

I am rooted. I said that in the first post.
I have no clue what an Odin is or a one click..
Like I said, I have never done anything like this before. I got my phone from a friend who had rooted it before I got it.
I apologize for my questions. Having a brain tumor messes up my head at times & things are hard for me to understand. I am sorry.
Can someone maybe post a link to the page or the file that I would need in order to get to JellyBean..
I am not on ICS. I am still on FI27
Can I go to JellyBean from FI27, or do I have to go to FL24 first?
Can I just flash to JB from where I am now, being on FI27 & rooted or do I have to Unroot first.
Nobody answered my questions..
Or If you did, I am sorry, but I dont understand.

Go to this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39175034
Click on the link for GB27 root/restore and download to your PC.
Once its DL you need to extract files. Right click on your screen and make a folder gb27...then click on the DL gb27 and extract... Click to select where to extract too then select that folder you just created.
Once it's done double click until a screen pops up that says something like root/restore gb27. Boot to DL mode (power off the hold volume down and power at the sane time.. Then select volume up) and then connect to PC. Once it recognizes your device...yellow light...click start and then let it do its thing till the green pass light happens then your phone will auto reboot and then set it up.
I know this sounds like a lot. While you're DL the one click at this link watch qbkings video and it will all make sense I swear. He makes it very very easy.

grab the restore version of the one-click...being its ur first time on jb.. this will wipe ur phone data..so back up anything u need...but i definitely advise using restore version ...this will also create the correct system partition for jb on ur phone....and as stated above, Watch the qbking video...it is a great resource.....Good luck..

Try booting your PC into safe mode and uninstalling the Epic 4g drivers from device manager. Safe mode device manager will show installed devicves that are not currently connected.

Do option C, then option E.
To get into recovery, turn phone off. Then power on by holding volup and power. Keep holding until recovery boots up. From there I would flash any custom rom as they pretty much all have the hotspot hack. I would recommend calkulin's as I personally have found it to be the most stable.
option e is ek02, im on el29, isnt el29 the newest ?

Yea, but it is not asking what you are on. It is asking what you want to flash to. Flash to ek02 (option E) and from there you can flash to whatever you'de like (I suggest calks rom, which is el29 based).
im confused, i flashed option l, the el29, can i not flash things from there? why would i flash an older ver.?

You can flash from anywhere as long as you can get to recovery. Sorry to have confused but I guess I had an earlier version of autoroot that didnt include the el29 images.

[Q] need some help

i got a sprint samsung galaxy s 2. and last night i think i put a wrong kernel on it all i am able to to is reboot it like if i was going to install from sd card or load from odin only info i can see is it says ICS SIYAHKERNEL and CWMR TOUCH V5.5.0.4 can someone help me out with a tar kernel so i can get my phone working
thanks
Sounds like you put the wrong firmware on you phone! IF you have a Sprint Epic 4G Touch you must put on the firmware that is specific to it. If you flashed another ROM, Kernel, or other software (ATT?)etc. you have probably just made an expensive paper weight.
PLEASE take some time to read, read again and then read thoroughly through the many stickies and posts here.
IF you do have the Epic 4G Touch (whick is why I'm assuming you are posting here and said Sprint) AND you can get into download mode (Volume down and power button at same time till you see the Samsung logo then let go) then you should try to use sfhub's one-click Odin for EL29 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 use the 'Reset Data' option and hopefully you will have your phone back. Watch Qbking77's videos too!
Otherwise take it back and tell them something happened and plays stupid.

Not enough info. More info so you can get some help, like exact model of phone, source for whatever it was that you flashed or odined into your phone.

"Read, Read again, Read some more!" this is the number one thing to do before ever even beginning the flashing process. I think I read and followed the threads for a couple months before ever trying to flash a new rom on my E4GT.
Then I made sure to go to the Settings>about Phone and wrote down everything, or take a picture of it whatever works. Then Watch any video associated with what you are doing until you have a good idea of what you are gonna do and the process that needs followed, and never skip a wipe if it says to do it!
For me I went with the "one click" method quoted above, because I found it to be the best, safest, and simplest tbh.
Then I followed the directions for install Clockwork after that, the easiest i found was e4gtauto-lite! This is a must have, as well as the paid version of Titanium Backup! e4gtauto will give you the recovery console you need to make a nand backup of your "working" phone in case something craps out.
Then you can reboot to recovery if it isn't totally bricked and restore your backup!
I also make folders for each rom i install and setup on my pc so I can put the related items such as backups, themes, modems etc for that specific rom in there in case my backup on my phone gets corrupted! < I think this is a must, at least for me!
Enough Long winded, wanted to share what I found worked for me! That way you hopefully only have to "play dumb" at Sprint once, if at all! Do the one click Odin from the quoted post from download mode if you can get in then once up and running follow directions at that post for the CWM install.
Last but not least read the Rom threads carefully before flashing them, a screenshot may look cool but 100 pages in you may find that others are having issues that you may care to avoid!
Hope this helps!

Just rooted my E4GT, and I have a question:

I want to install the Blazer ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363071), but I'm new to rooting and flashing ROMs onto my device as this is my first Android device ever.
I was watching qbking77's video on installing the Blazer ROM, and he said that I needed CWM 5.0.2.7, but I believe he also said somewhere in the comments on some of his other videos that Rouge doesn't work as well as the (normal?) CWM 5.0.2.7? Is this true? Because I followed Zedomax's tutorial to root and install CWM and he uses Rogue, so I was wondering if this would mess with my phone at all.
Also, I heard that using the stock EL29 rom is usually unstable when installing ICS ROMs and that I should flash EL26 if I plan on using any ICS ROMs. Would it also be bad to try flashing the Blazer ROM without flashing an EL26 ROM and/or regular CWM or can I just go ahead and flash Blazer with my stock rooted EL29 E4GT with Rogue CWM 5.0.2.7?
Long story short: Can I just flash the Blazer ROM from stock EL29 Rooted with Rogue CWM 5.0.2.7 or do I need/should to do other things before attempting to flash this ROM? I've heard bad things about Rogue CWM and EL29 vs EL26 and regular CWM.
Thanks.
CWM won't be too picky, I have used standard cwm attached below and have not had problems with any flash so far, except CM9 {alot of people do, you will learn that}, anyway, follow OP install instructions and you will be fine, make sure to grab Calk's Format script in the OP. You should be on your new home screen in no time at all. If you get any FC's at first, try going back to CWM and Fix Permissions, Reboot and should be good.

So I shouldn't need to do anything other than get standard CWM (aside from the OP's instructions, of course)? Also, how can I go about getting standard CWM and getting rid of Rogue?
And what is an "FC?" Sorry, I don't know all the terminology yet, but I read and watch a lot of videos daily about all of this stuff to try and learn as much as possible. His instructions just seem very vague for people that are new to rooting and installing custom ROMs.

Correct, download the file I attached, it has EL26, its rooted and the CWM is present - Make sure you do this with Odin 1.85, put it in the PDA position and uncheck the AUTO RE-BOOT option. You will then have to wait for it to Pass, but should only be a few seconds, unplug, pull bat and reboot holding Volume+ and Power.
FC= Force Close
They seem vague at first, but mainly due to alot of jargon your not familiar with yet.
Anyway, I hoped I helped you, if I did hit the thanks button.

Okay, and where can I find Odin 1.85? Or can I just use the exact same Odin program that I rooted with (using Zedomax's root method on SPH-D710 to root to stock EL29)?
And, let me see if I'm understanding this all correctly (please be patient with me ):
1. I run Odin 1.85
2. click PDA (I'm assuming is an option/button in Odin), and uncheck Auto-boot
3. select the EL26 file you included and click start(?)
4. wait for it to pass, then unplug the phone (should still be turned on at this point?)
5. pull bat (I assume you mean select the file for EL26 included in e4gtauto.zip Zedomax provided?)
6. reboot by going into CWM and selecting reboot.
Correct?
And I shouldn't have to do anything to delete Rogue CWM? Just these above steps?

I am not sure where the 1.85 odin file is on XDA, but I have attached, below, still learning my way around here too.
SS= Screen Shot - See attached.
your steps are good, except I meant pull battery, not really necessary, but I usually forget to move my files to my sd card, so I end up pulling it anyway.
Once you get the PASS in odin, you will then hold in power for 8 seconds and hold Volume+ button at the same time {or pull battery and do same}.
That will put you into CWM, then go to install zip from SD > Choose Zip File from External SD, grab your Calkulin file, run it, then go back and run the ROM file and Reboot!
You should be good to go from there.

Alright, so after following the steps that you gave me, I just need to copy all of the files the OP posted onto my SD card and follow his steps?
Sorry I'm so bad at this, but I really do appreciate you being so patient with me. You're pretty much one of the only people that has actually attempted to help me with a question I've had.
One last question: I don't need to do anything to remove Rogue CWM before following your steps, do I? I didn't want to try anything until I was sure about this because I'm incredibly scared of bricking my phone as this is my first time ever doing anything like this.
Thank you so much for your help so far, though. I've thanked all of your posts along the way, and I really do appreciate it.

Correct, once you flash the el26 file from above, Rogue will be gone, you will reboot to recovery, flash Calkulin, flash ROM, reboot, rejoice!
Not a problem, I understand how it can be frustrating, still waiting on an answer to my question I posted to the XDA.
Good luck and remember google is your friend too! Just search XDA and then what your looking for and you will likely get an answer somehow.

I've "thanked" your post again, and I just wanted to say again how much I appreciate your help tonight. You have no idea how long I've been waiting to get help on all sorts of different ROMs (not necessarily here, but in other places - it's been about 2 and a half weeks and basically no one has replied to me other than Qbking once and Zedomax once), so once again, I thank you.
Cheers, friend! Good luck on your question, I'd attempt to help, but I clearly don't know much about Android. XD I wish I could help!

Haha, I bet. I'm already loving this ROM, the theming is really minimalistic, everything is stable, and I can just install Apex Launcher if I want the stock ICS experience. I'm here at my parents house for summer break, and I live in Florida for college. I don't really have access to a windows PC there since I have a Macbook Pro (courtesy of Full Sail University), and I didn't really want to deal with all the bs you have to go through on a mac to root the phone and stuff so I just waited for summer break, so getting your help this early in my break was amazing because this means I can try out other ROMs now that I know what to do if I feel so.
I'll be using your tutorial for the rest of my family's phones as well since they all got incredibly interested when I told them I could update the phone for them before Sprint did, haha. Plus, my mom loves the idea of the Wifi tethering for free, so she was pretty much sold the second I said that.
Thanks again! I already love Android 100x more than iOS (I'm coming from an iPhone) because of the ability to customize literally anything about the OS.
You are most definitely welcome, I would be more than happy to help in the future too, but do try Nova Launcher, its quite slick, easy to customize and I haven't seen a bit of lag out of it period.
Im posted up in my basement working, while the wife and kids sleep anyways.

I'm using Apex right at the moment, but I've heard great reviews about Nova. I'll definitely try it out tomorrow when I get some time, and I have to set up the wifi network on this phone. We live a little outside the city here and the 3G/4G speeds get pretty awful in certain spots for them. Back in Orlando for myself, however, they're really fast.
But yeah, I'll definitely check out Nova. Maybe I can still refund Apex. XD
KloudIX - Thank you so much for your helpful replies in this thread! Have you gotten as far as rooting his phone yet? What "gotcha's" are you referring too, sorry for the delayed response. Been busy. Once you get him rooted follow the OP for Blazer Rom and flip back and forth through here if you have questions. Most of the "Gotcha's" that I am thinking of have been wiped due to sfhub's mods/fixes.
If u do insta) blazer, you'll love it. I've been using it daily. Has great performance and battery life

[Q] to root or not to root, that is the question

So I recently cut ties with my rooted OG evo :'( and have switched to a sprint galaxy s2, aka the epic 4g touch fi27. The first thing I did was head over to these forums because of course my first thought was let's open this bad boy up. But after reading how to, how not to, how to avoid, etc etc it seems that either: a. I am over complicating it, or b. it would be easier, albeit not as much fun, if I just stayed stock due to the overwhelming ways to brick such a (from what I can tell) fragile device. Now I am in no ways new to rooting and all this jazz but it just seems like the risk might overweigh the outcome of rooting and hard bricking my epic 4g touch device?
so this is where I turn to you, the veteran users of the epic 4g touch. What are your thoughts, tips, tricks, advice, or kicks in the right direction?
any help is much appreciated
Just root the phone already
Read the directions and most of a thread before flashing a new rom and you will have very minimal risk.
root it.
I also came from the OG Evo and was hesitant at first, just do a lot of reading and also get to know PC Odin. Also, if you haven't updated to the latest OTA you could just install that root exploit app to obtain root. Probably the easiest way to root unless you took the new OTA update.

You could always just go stock rooted. It's really not that hard to not brick the device, just follow directions and don't skip any steps trying to save time.

I also came from the OG Evo and was hesitant at first, just do a lot of reading and also get to know PC Odin. Also, if you haven't updated to the latest OTA you could just install that root exploit app to obtain root. Probably the easiest way to root unless you took the new OTA update.

From what I understand sprint pushes ota's when you activate a new phone so unfortunately I'm stuck on fi27 even if I didn't want to. does that make a difference?

Actually FI27 is the version right before the new OTA, the newest version is FL24 that has just been released and just being pushed out now. My wife's phone just received that OTA but mine has not yet.

so root exploit would be the way to go?

You can either oneclick to root or use exynos abuse apk to root on fi27 if you want to stay stock rooted for now I'd just use the exynos abuse method and then if you decide you want to flash something later use mobile odin or mobile odin pro to flash a kernel+recovery without increasing your flash counter
I like to break stuff!
Rooting in and of itself doesn't present a risk as far as the bricking you're referring to goes. It's when you start messing around with unsafe kernels/recoveries that it becomes an issue, but all of the modern kernels/recoveries are safe.
Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. After much research I've realized that all I'm looking for is jelly bean on my e4gt because that's what i had running on my OG Evo and I've come across a confusing issue. It seems that it is possible to flash jb through Odin without having root. Now coming from my evo this sounds too good to be true but is it?

Yeah, you can definitely flash stock ROM images through Odin without having root. Samsung devices have a download mode for emergency recovery that allows you to do such things in Odin. However, I believe it's limited to the stock images (and the stock images can be pre-rooted), so if you want an AOSP-based ROM instead of TouchWiz, you'll still need to flash it through custom recovery after you're rooted. Also, be aware that flashing ROM images with Odin will completely wipe your device, so back up anything you want to save before you do it.

if you want cm or aokp you'll need to odin a custom safe recovery then flash those roms.
I know how you feel about all of this. I'm pretty sure I posted something awhile back about this when I first got the phone. It definitely seems like a lot when you don't know how to do much. It's actually quite simple, as as stated above, as long as you follow directions you will be good to go! :good:
Let me see if I can give you some guide on how I learned how to do things to kind of just get in the groove of it.
First things first, you are going to want to check out this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416477
On that page you will be able to download the PC ODIN for stock rooted Gingerbread. You will run that in download mode on your phone (Vol Down + Power.) Make sure you have the Samsung drivers installed on your computer which you can also get from that link. Just follow the instructions to get that installed and you should be good to go. When it is done you can go to Settings > About Phone and make sure that you are running Android 2.3.6 or Gingerbread and you are now rooted at this point (look for the superuser icon.)
After that is done go ahead and check out this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
This is the auto root package that will give you the custom recovery that you will want to use for flashing. There is a file in the rar that is called "RUNFIRST" which, obviously, you will run first. It will bring up a Command Prompt for you to type in selections. Since you are running EL26 at this point you will want to hit "C." This next selection page is your recovery selection.
Look down for EL26 and we recommend Chris41g's recovery. The other is Rogue which you can't do too much with. You will want to make sure you go into Settings > Applications and check the box for USB Debugging. Plug the phone back in, and hit "I" <==-- Capital EYE to avoid confusion, and let it do it's work. It will restart the phone, and if all was successful you will now be rooted with a recovery that you can flash from. EL26 recovery is the most recommended recovery to flash from for any ROM. Power down, and use Vol Up + Power to enter your recovery mode.
Using the volume rocker you can hit up + down + up + down to activate the power button selection and from here you can now flash a ROM zip of your choice. If you are looking for a Jelly Bean ROM, might I recommend Sniper's PACman JB ROM that you can find here:

Thanks for the recommendation. I still think the exynos abuse app would be easier
Turn on outside sources, install the app, root, install mobile odin and the flash kernel apks, flash the el26 cwm tar, flash PACman from recovery

I'm on Sniper's PACman rom, and it's good. I much prefer it to stock TouchWiz. If you like the stock TW interface, but want jellybean, have a look at Rwilco's 1-click packages. They make flashing and rooting a snap, and the ones I've used don't trigger the yellow triangle or increase your flash counter (if that matters to you). I stuck with FK23 for quite a while (almost a month), and then did something stupid, so I flashed to FL04 then later to PACman.
I am new to rooting phones and like you a bit overwhelmed at all the information. I finally found this Youtube video that is VERY good and makes rooting easy if you are looking to stock root your phone.

[Q] Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean upgrade & WIFI Shuts off Phone

Upgraded to the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and now every time I turn on the WIFI it ask me for the password. After entering the password the phone shuts off, restarts, and the WIFI is on and works.
Why after upgrading does the phone shut off when starting the WIFI and what is the fix for it?
Phone is a Samsung Galaxy S2.
I thought the upgrade would be better.
Thank you in advance
Make sure connection optimizer is off.

Being that you're on 4.1.2 and you didn't say otherwise, I'm assuming you're stock... unrooted..
Now this is just guess work on my part.. but I would try to wipe cache in you're stock recovery and reboot...
Outside of that... I would suggest doing the upgrade again.. as something might not have stuck during the installation...
If any of this doesn't seem to work... I would just backup my data and Odin the stock gb27 full restore one-click...found in rwilco's repo... that way you know you're partitions are correct for JB and you will still be stock... remember... the full restore will wipe you're data... so back it up..
There is a rooted and an unrooted version...

That is true. The reason I updated to Jelly Bean was because I want to Root and figured it would be wise to have the latest operating system.

OK I will look that up on how to do it - unless you have a link that explains it or care to tell me. And believe me I appreciate your help a lot!

Good idea. I was a little hesitant because I thought more could go wrong. Worth a try!

OK, would you be able to provide a link on what you mean or explain it to me? This is rather new to me.

Good idea. Do you recommend a particular way of backing it up or particular program?

Rooted and unrooted version of what exactly? Little confused!
Again, I'm new to this and really trying to understand. This is very interesting.

IMO, if a picture is worth a 1,000 words, a video is worth 1,000,000.
The first time I rooted my phone I watched a bunch of videos on youtube. Search QBKing77 on youtube and he has a ton of videos on the rooting, DL mode, etc. There is probably one on GB27 One Click Exe stock rooted.
There are stickies in our forum that will link you to rwilco's depository of everything you need to get the job done, but watch it a few times first. I would link, but he has asked us not to which is good because indirectly, it will make you search and find the right files to use.
@SkidMarx
No worries...
If you can't find the gb27 one-click or you want a little guidance on how to use odin( QBKing's video is great )...don't be afraid to ask.. ( but please post in the noob friendly Q & A section.. myself and others far smarter than me.. lol. Check that thread all the time...
As for rooting... once you have the one-click installed ( rooted or unrooted version ) if you run into any problems with root access. There is an app called framaroot that will root this device.. it uses an exploit and is very simple and quick..
Also... if you want to try to wipe cache first before using Odin... turn you're phone off... let it power down complete.. now hold the power button and the volume up button ( simultaneously ) until the Samsung screen pops up for the second time.. then release and that should boot you to stock recovery...
Now it's been awhile since I was on any stock recovery.. but there should be an option to wipe cache ( only wipe cache )..after the wipe.. reboot the device.. ( I have little faith that this will fix you're problem, but it's easy to do before we go flashing anything else )
Like I said above... if you want a little guidance don't be afraid to ask... but as said in the above post.. if you search and read first.. it will be easier for you in the long haul. .as well as easier for us to help you..
Good Luck.... and Welcome to XDA... Epic 4g Touch forum..
