something similar had happened with me few days back. I think I resolved that by loading few videos from gallery or manually opening them with the video player Via es file explorer and telling it to play with stock video and music players
this happens due to media server crashing likely due to some corrupt file.

thanks so much, i have followed ur method but didnt work for me , im doing a backup and format the card and see how it goes

I'm having the same problem! Started this morning. Only thing I noticed that was different was that a few apps auto updated while I was asleep which might have caused the problem. No media files on the sdcard are showing up in any apps other than file explorers and they are viewable/playable on stock apps through the explorers. I tried dismounting/mounting, restarting the phone, made a backup of the sdcard on the computer and formated it on the phone but still no luck. I tried moving the files to different folders in the sdcard as well as the root destination (if thats what its called, I put the files on the sdcard not within a folder) still nothing. When I copy a file from the sdcard to the phone memory only then do they show up, but moving them back to the sdcard does not fix the problem. When taking a photo, the file is saved in the same destination as my older files on the sdcard but the new image is the only one that shows up in the gallery. It's driving me crazy! Please help!
Apps that were updated included some samsung update. Could that have caused the problem?
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100. Not rooted.

I would try uninstalling updates for the video player from the App Manager. This should return the app to factory settings.

Thanks for the suggestion, but after checking the video player is version 1.0 and there is no option to uninstall updates. I checked the music player as well (version 5.0.5) and theres no option to uninstall updates too. I uninstalled updates for samsung push service and samsung link since I think one of those two were the app that was updated yesterday, but that didn't fix anything.

Rats. I have found the larger SD cards to be unreliable.

SanDisk 64gb. You think that could be the cause of the problem? Although the packaging of the SD card had android marketing all over it and said something along the lines of "formatted for android" or "made for android" don't really remember. I've been using it for almost 2 months now and it's been fine up till yesterday. Plus the thing that's really confusing me is that I can still access everything through file explorers.

I know I had a problem with my 32 and had to fiddle; but could always read it on my computer. I read somewhere larger fails more frequently. Almost gave up but it stabilized. I'm storing photos straight to SD but switch back to on device if I want to make sure I get the shots. No trust.

Try deleting the .thumbnails folder in the DCIM on internal sd card, another .thumbnails folder for video thumbs could also be deleted. Then unmount and remount external card. Might be good idea to clear data of media storage on settings/application manager.
Mine is 64 GB Sandisk Ultra too,

Thanks for the suggestion. After deleting both .thumbnails folders, clearing data from media storage in application manager and unmounting and remounting the external card, the only thing that changed is one song (that was on the internal sd) has finally showed up on the music player when it wasn't there before (which was a minor issue that was pissing me off so thanks!). The music and video files on the external sd however still do not show in the music and gallery apps but are still accessible through the file manager. I restarted the phone for good measure but still no luck.

I am using a sandisk 64gb card my videos don't show up in galary I have to use vlc player and they show and work fine.

Thanks

I cannot thank you enough! I have spent days trying to fix this issue, I have tried everything but factory reset but this worked. Thank you!

my fix
I had the same problem on my nexus 4. I ended up moving all the music I had from my downloads folder (or wherever else) to a folder called music that I had created in the media folder on my internal SD. This did not fix all my music but 6-8 albums are now detectable by my phone (any app). There are still however a few albums this did not work with and I have not tried this with a video file. I also used an app called ES file explorer to let me create and move files on my internal SD. I hope this helps some of you guys and if someone figures out how to get all media to become detectable please post.

What is Samsung saying about this issue?

Windows Media Player no longer sees Storage Card, HELP

Ok, I just got a 4gig Sandisk MicroSD (SDHC) placed about 2.5 gigs of music on it last night and everything was working great. I used WMP11 to sync files onto my storage card.
This morning things worked out for awhile, then, Media Player Mobile stopped seeing the storage card. The storage card still shows up in File Explorer and I can play files individually using the Windows Media Player Mobile, but since it's not seeing the card I can't play songs by Album, Genre, Artist, etc. I tried Updating Library and it runs ok, but when it says it's done the Storage Card still doesn't show up.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm running vp3G 3.61
Thanks

my honest answer to this......is that WMP sucks a$$......dont use it man....what you want to use is htc audio manager....its an incredible, stable and versatile program for music, you can try it and keep it if you like it and if u dont just delete it....its free and best of all is that you can still turn off your screen while the device plays music to save battery.....windows media player is very unstable, messes up a lot, and its just plain aggravating....i had the same problem you are havin a few weeks ago....
you can find the link to htc audio manager here in this cab library

I had this problem the other day - first time since November last year when running WM5. I was in a flashing mood so tried various different WM6 Roms and the problem remained - I could see the card in all ways except for when WMP tried to update my music files (It found them but wouldn't add them).
I re-formatted my micro-SD cards (1GB and 2GB) from FAT16 to FAT32 and all is now well again. I seem to remember this was also one of the tricks for the old 'SD card disappears' problem.
You can format through any compatible card reader, or direct on your phone using pocket mechanic from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=300353
WMP does SUCK! and yes HTC audio manager is 100* better...
however the problem i htink you're having is a common problem with WMP, i dont know the reason it happens but IIRC the WMP media DB gets currepted.
this is a hidden file on your SD card called somthing like METADATA or somthing along those lines.
I foudn mine got currupted regularly.
a format of the card will resolve the issue but with that much media to copy off and on its tedious. another solution is to (while WMP is NOT running) rename this file.
next time WMP loads it will re-search your card for media and re-build its DB resolving the issue.
you may be able to delete the file but i found i couldn't due to some file locks or currption im not sure.
OH!!! importantly the built in file explorer wont be able to see the hidden file. i would sugest rename it on a PC, or install GSFiner+ which is a MUCH better file browser anyway. you can use GSFinder to show hidden and system files you otherwise can't see in the built in explorer.
hope that helps... (or switch to a decent media player p

This post is all over here if you would search. I know it is a pain but we all go through it. So go to File Explorer on your phone. Go to the storage card on the main screen of the storage card click on menu show all files and then you will see MSMETADATA folder. Delete it. I had to do mine a few times and then it quit showing up. Just a little FYI. It will work. No need to do ANYTHING else.

Well I tried out HTC Audio Mangager and you were 100% right, this is a much better and UI Friendly Player. I already had it, but never really messed with it much. I was so impressed I went ahead and downloaded the HTC Home Customizer so I could make it the Default Player on the 'Music Tab'.
Thanks for the tip,

That's right.. Though you will need to set the file explorere to show hidden files before you can delete the folder.
What I found out though is that it will somehow mysteriously return... Like when the phone is powered off and some other such.
So what I did was delete the MSMETADATA folder from the storage card and rebuild the library on the storage card... Once it was rebuilt and loaded then I built a PLAYLIST and saved it...
Now when I want to play from the storage card I just go to open FILE and then go to mydevice->storagecard->playlist->myplaylist
No more problems with the lost library stuff (only need to do it again when adding new songs)...
This works fine and solve the problem with my 8525 thanks
Thanks this worked

After syncing windows media player 11 with my windows mobile device (to the storage card) when I open up the libary and select any song it plays for 2 seconds and then moves on to the next song with the previous song having the red exclamation point next to it, I particularly encounter this problem within a created playlist, how do I resolve this?
Music Library
All you have to do in that situation is update the player library if you have alot of music it may take awile but it takes care of the Storage card problem everytime

External sdcard woes

Before owning the Note 2, I had the S3. The problem with the scared happens on both phones.
When I first got the Note, I removed the sdcard from the S3 and put it straight into the Note.
No media showed up. Formatted in phone, transferred media, all working as it should.
Today, add a video to card, doesn't show. Add a photo, doesn't show.
Format card, transfer media. Nothing shows up.
Am reluctant to buy another card as I tried three Cards in the S3, and the problem was present with all of them.
PS using root explorer I can find all the media, and play them in their respective apps.

solution might be here:

Thanks, for some reason that works for my videos, but not with photos and music!!!!
And that is more of a workaround than a solution. Ideally I would like for it to work as it should. Impossible for me to go back to stock as I will always need root to vieww my media(ok, I will probably always be rooted, but I want the option)
Edit: tried again and my music and photos are now showing (using Directory Bind)

Ive had issues like this on my EVO. Try installing a "media scan" app from the market. It rescans all media content on the phone and then if you want you can remove the app after its done. I had 2 years worth of photos on my 16GB SD class 10 and no pictures or video thumbnails / pictures at all would show. Ran the app and fixed all the issues.
I did try a couple of those apps yesterday.I dont know if either one worked.I mean I know nothing showed up, but it was as though they never actually run.
Same issue
:crying:
I tried formatting several times and copied the data back, nothing helped. Also copying files from my comp to the sd card and internal storage in the phone is very slow. I bought the device yesterday, its stock unrooted.
I don't believe media (pictures/video) show up until mediascanner detects them and sticks in some internal database.
So just copying files onto your external card and popping it in isn't going to work.
media scanner is normally triggered during a reboot, and some apps can trigger it. (generally via 'rescan media' buttons).
Also make sure you don't have a .nomedia file there, as that causes media scanner to skip the directory.
( media scanner can really grind on directories with tons of files )

I tried a different memory card from my old Sensation and it read the files perfectly... can any of you help me with the copying speed.. it took me 35 mins to copy 1.20GB... just to be sure i i tried to copy the same date using the same data cable and the same usb port, onto my wildfire, and it copied it pretty fast. Any idea ?

It sounds like the Sensation card just has slower transfer rates. While your wildfire has faster transfer rates but you are experience issues on the phone side.
Just to confirm, you have formatted both cards the same way and one works and the other doesn't? If possible try to format the card from the phone. Have you tried a sandisk card?

Both the cards are Sandisk 8gb cards, both formatted on the Note 2. I transferred data to card A when its in the wildfire, i formatted the card and put it in the note and formatted it again, and tried to copy the same data to card A, it takes more than 3times the amount of time... data transfer has been slow to the card while its in the note
I have read somewhere that there is a " .nomedia " folder somewhere. Delete that and see what happens.

Also on top of that, when you formatted the SDCard did you format in the PC or in your phone through recovery? You will want to format through recovery.
I would recommend upgrading to an ext partition and then formatting again (if you don't need the ext). I have found that even formatting the SDCard on some roms (because the way they work) it doesn't wipe everything and upgrading the to ext actually changes the file system of the SDCard rather than a quick format. Then only copy your media back to the card. Dont copy everything like .android, data, and stuff like that. Just what you want to keep.

Is there any chance you have a counterfeit Sandisk card? Did you buy it from an authorized dealer? If buying from Amazon make sure you only purchase directly from amazon, LLC and not a third party vendor.
For reference which sandisk card do you have what class is it rated at?

No the card is legit, i got it in the box when i bought the HTC Sensation and worked fine on the sensation. It has good copying speed if i put it in another device like my wildfire even now. I checked copying speeds yesterday using the same card in my wildfire and my new note, but it takes forever to copy data to the card while its in the Note. I have not rooted my Note yet. Its factory stock as of now.

If your internal memory is slow I would consider that cause for concern. Perhaps try running benchmarks and comparing your results to those in the benchmark thread. It may be worth returning it for another phone if you can't find a solution soon.

Isn't the speed difference just to do with the way the Note 2 connects to the pc? I.E MTP as opposed to mass storage? I seem to recall my G.F's original Note is dog slow at data transfer in MTP but much faster in USB mode....shame the Note 2 can't do this, it's one of my reservations about buying it.

Now it makes sense to me, thanks :good:
Is there any way to connect in USB mode rather than MTP??
Can I ask if anyone else suffers from the same problem as raised in the OP?
I would imagine its not "the norm" and yet I have had the same issue on both the S3 and Note 2.
Whilst, it is now working, I am having to use Directory Bind, for it to do so.
I put in a new 64GB card on Saturday, recognised straight away in Settings/Storage, formatted fine in the phone giving me 59+GB of free space.
Put media on it...nothing shows.
I cant ever see my phone not being rooted so it can be worked around, but it just seems strange that I have had this on both phones and yet nobody else seems to suffer from it.

For whatever reason I don't think Samsung enabled USB mass storage mode on either the S3 or the Note 2. It's the one thing that's holding me back from buying one at the moment because I use iTunes Agent to sync with iTunes, and that requires the device to be in mass storage mode when connected to the pc (or you can take the sd card out and put it in a reader, but I don't like to take the back off too many times as most phones end up getting really creaky). It's a real shame because I'm just itching to get one.
Have a look in the GS3 forum - I think there's a thread where someone has created an app that enables you to toggle USB mass storage mode, but I think you might have to be rooted and have a custom kernel. Don't quote me, that's from memory

There are a couple of threads about this I think now. I browsed some last night. Sorry, I'm only on my phone at the moment so it's a bit awkward to try and find a link for you (what with having a Sensation with only a 4.3" screen They'll be on the first page or two I think.
My girlfriend's original Note had a similar problem with photos and media after connecting an external hard drive. Going into settings/apps and clearing data on the media storage app followed by a reboot sorted the problem for her.

[Q] Android.Process.Media taking too much CPU / Battery

Hi guys
My Note 2 seems to be using too much CPU process. I have Watchdog task manager installed and almost every few minutes, i see Android.Process.Media getting a warning. At the same time, i can feel my phone is hot.
I've did some research on the web and it seems to suggest that there's a corrupted sdcard or corrupted media file (mp3, jpg, mv) in my sdcard. Thus the media storage keep trying to check the files.
My situation is, in my SD card i only have 1 folder that has a lot of pictures (download through mangawatcher). No mp3, no movies. The root folder has a .nomedia file, but it seems that the media storage still craws through the entire folder.
My phone is not rooted (need it to stay unrooted due to some reason). Is there any way to fix this?
1 other possible way i found was completely disable Android.Process.Media, but if i do this, my ringtones and notification tones are all gone (goes into unknown state).
You could try backing up your SD Card to computer, formatting it (FAT32 if external) then restoring folder by folder to isolate which one might be causing the problem?

Yeah, that's what i'm trying now. Will update here on the result.
Latest update: It would seem that my problem could be related to a bad microSD card. a friend of mine who suffered from the same problem said her problem was solved once she changed SD cards..
SanDisk -> Kingston.
Another update: i'm getting this error now..sdcard unexpectedly removed
I read some other forums, it seems to suggest the error could be because of corrupted SD card (SanDisk)
http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-note-2/231647-sd-card-unexpectedly-removed-2.html
Might be worth doing a full read write test on the card on a computer just to be sure.

Update: In the end i rooted my phone and tried this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDEsImNvbS5hZGR6Lm1lZGlhc2Nhbm5lcnJvb3QiXQ..
Works wonders... too bad had to use root. I'm using a 8gb MicroSD now, will try with my SanDisk 32gb again and see what happens.
Yeah that's one way around it, it's a bit annoying as a band aid fix though as each time you add any media like photos it will require triggering a scan. I also had issues with installing Apps remotely from the browser using that method.

Many thx Good to know that.
I just put back my original SanDisk 32GB. Though i don't have the media scanner problem, but i do see from time to time it says "Preparing SDcard" i suspect my SD card is dying just like the rest..
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, which caused to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I creates an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card, and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
Please PM me if anyone needs this app.

Gallery and SD card management issues.

Okay guys so, I haven't been able to determine my issue currently. But so I'm pretty sure rom doesn't matter. I'm on wicked currently, but for whatever reason when I have much storage on my micro SD, it starts to behave oddly. It's a patriot 32 gig. When I go to open the gallery with as little as 4 gigs on the external. It'll freeze up and may or may not ever load my pictures. It refused to play a video I'd just recorded. And when I plugg the phone into the computer to try to transfer files it behaves oddly. Sometimes I'll open a folder, it shows it is empty, and then when I go to copy said empty folder it will start to move the info and show there actually is a lot of stuff in the folder. Sometimes it'll stop transferring and say 'data type cannot be identified' or something to that effect. I *think* this is only with my external SD. I've reformatted several times without luck any info on this? Thanks guys.

Have you tried a different SD card?

[Q] problem playing music

i bought a 128gb micro sd card for my htc one m9. i moved all of my music onto the sd card but cannot play it on my phone. is there any way to fix this? ive tried to play it in the music app and the google music app but it doesnt show me any way to play the songs.
Are they recognized in file explorer? Any files on SD visible?

yes. when i looked on file manager it showed every song, and it would let me play them individually on either of the 2 music apps but will not let me get them on the apps themselves. i would not let me skip to the next song. i would have to look through all of the songs to find a specific one. it would take far too long.

Strange, may have something to do with the size of the card although I have heard it can accept a 128GB card. Is app on internal storage or SD? If on internal storage, shouldn't be an issue. Also, is music stored in music folder?
Try going to settings/apps/all/music and clear cache and data and then reopen music app to see if it finds your files.
I put all of the songs in the folder called google.music or something like that first and it didn't work, so I made a folder called music and that didnt work. So I tried formatting the sd card and moved the songs again and it didn't work. Just cleared cache and data and it didn't work. Also, when I look at the storage in settings it says there is music on the sd card.
Wow, looks like you've attempted all remedies. Do you have another SD card to try to rule out issues with the 128GB card?
Just buy a real micro sd card instead of the fake one.. the fake one won't work..
P.S. Your question does not relate to HTC M9.

what are you talking about? i did research to make sure that the micro sd card i bought was compatible with my htc one m9. not fake. and it clearly relates to a HTC ONE M9 as that is the phone i am having the problem with. ****ing idiot.

Same issue here, but I'm just moving my music on to the phone itself now and that works just fine. I moved my pictures to the SD card and the gallery app has no problem finding the pictures. It's just the music app that's having difficulty.
Strange that this is occurring. I have 800+ songs on my SD card (64 gigabyte) and the music app finds and plays them without issues
Genuine SanDisk...
Not a remedy for standard player but I can confirm Poweramp works perfectly from music on the card.
Yes, if you don't really need the greatest musics on the go - you can go with PowerAMP.. again if you only need the best from the life, and this is why you have habitually opted for the next HTC, then you won't depart your further amazing without NEUTRON..

also I have the same problem.
I had the songs to work well and suddenly I ran out of songs according to play music.
with another application "ES EXplorer" he can identify the songs and play smoothly.
Still, I prefer the Play Music but this does not identify any music on cellphone

which file system is on your sd card? is it formatted as fat32? it normally should work fine. try formatting it with some professional tools, not windows and try again..also don't format in phone, sometimes it breaks the compatibility...if you already tried on windows but not on phone try it with formatting on phone...otherwise do the step i told you on windows with a formatting tool for sd cards and format to either fat or fat32
Make sure SD is FAT32, try a player that lets you select a music directory such as PlayerPro or PowerAMP. Using a Sandisk 64GB SD as portable storage in CM13, and both these players (in fact many others as well) can see all the files without a problem.
try different music players, or make sure the file formats are supported, or the sd card could be incorrectly formatted?
