[Q] A retired Evo.. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was a good evo. but ive "upgraded" love to stay on the evo i know it well. Ive Gone to a HTC one.
I refuse to ignore my evo though so just curious if anyone needs a test bedder or know of a good use for an evo without service.

You can use it for a media player. It it way better than an iPod plus it can call 911 in a pinch. I set one of mine up for my daughter. She watches netfilx, plays movies, games, facebook, etc.
Or you could use it as a backup. It is legal to clone your own device as long as you don't sell it. I have 3 phones (personal) using the same esn.

Media player would be the number one thing I would use an old device for. Although... I'm currently looking for a phone to replace my LG Optimus V on virgin mobile, and I've head you can flash this phone to virgin mobile.... hint. hint.

yea im using it for music n stuff now but the htc ones audio proccessing will blow the evo out of the water and shoot it into space and put it in orbit around jupiter lol. (not beats audio thats just software) im saying its a newer device its general an improvement.
and yea i dont doubt anything with the evo XD alot of developers have contributed alto of respectable work on the evo. heck its a miracle 4.2.2 is runnin on it the way it is XD
aaah ima miss coming to the evo 4g development threads :'D
now only if someone had a android 3.0 ROM for the evo i could just make it a lil 4.3" tablet :3...not a very powerful tablet but still...

I hope you have google music or a limited number of songs you want to put on your phone.... the htc one is a great phone, the lack of a sd card would make me never buy it, though.

Ubersonic is made for inactive devices. It's main one is for ICS, although if you want JB he does have some experimental builds in this post.

yea i had it on my evo for a while dint like it that much it was great but it felt too much like a refined just for music type deal. however id love to put android 3.0 on my evo :3 i might just put a 4.2.2 rom on it and drop the DPI to 120 and use it like a tablet XD

I am looking for something for my OG Evo as well. I have Ubersonic on it now, but it just does not play well with my bluetooth speaker, so I want to try something else.
Ideally, I'd like to slap a JB ROM on her so I can use profiles to share it with my daughter... but I'd also like HDMI out to work - which I am not so sure is possible on JB.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

I think cyanmobile has profiles. It is a highly modified gingerbread rom that has many ics/jb features added in. Everything works correctly except for mms. Which I am still working on a fix. Most users have been able to make mms work by using go sms.

so its just a notification item? you still have to pull out the phone to respond or access all data right? a bluetooth earpiece/headset can tell me whos calling, switch through music, etc...
i really dont see the point. my phone is always either in my pocket or on my workdesk in plain view for me to easily see. Im not constantly checking personal email, sms, twitter/fb updates while at work or when im out playing or partying regardless.
Do you think it will be compatible with the EVO?
EDIT
They are and I am getting one in a heartbeat, I wonder what the battery is like on it.
EDIT 2
It says its compatible with the Galaxy S series and the HTC Desire, it also says the phone has to have bluetooth 2.1 do we are just fine!
And to the OP THANK YOU for showing me this.
EDIT 3
Well Ive been doing some digging forum and I found this nice spec
- Typical consumer battery usage time: 4 days
and its 69 EUROS or 96 bucks, nice little conversion there I dont mind paying that for one of these, it is also looking at a november release date too.
Being a very active college student, i will be getting one of these, as my evo has replaced my ipod, this should make the music player work better when im going between classes so im prolly gonna grab one

i think his point was why not make it a media player? a remote control for your phone is as useless as a remote control for your car stereo.
of course theres the likes of the bt3030 that can do that already.... hmmm
why get a phone with a huge screen if you're not going to use it =/
It's up for preorder at a few places. Anyone preorder it yet? I found a German outlet selling it the cheapest, but they don't ship to the US. Looks like it goes for $80 at Play.com but it also doesn't look like they ship to the US. Expansys does have it for $99...so I may just have to go with that.
I kinda want one O_O
Bought it, and am using it, and it is a bit buggy with the evo. The music player cannot be controlled from my experience, and the software freezes the phone sometimes. It shows "paired not connected" in bluetooth settings, yet still seems to work, but sometimes loses connection. I am looking for a Desire HD ROM port or a vanilla android build to see if I can get this thing working, but I do not want to lose 4g.

Currently have a HTC evo. thinking of going to a moment or even a HTC hero. Help.

As the title says. I have a HTC evo 4g on sprint. I am selling it due to needing money for bills. I have been looking at either the Samsung moment. HTC hero. Lg lotus elite. Or the LG rumor touch. What is the hero and the moment like when rooted. I had a Samsung moment for about 2 days and didn't like it due to it freezing up. And slow response. Is it any better or even comparable to the evo in speed wise. Also what about the hero and the other two non smartphones. Thanks again in.advance.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Don't know about the LG but I have some experience with the moment and hero. In relation to development and rooting, neither compare to the EVO. DON'T get a moment. Imo they are pure garbage and have extremely little development support. In terms of quality and dev support I feel the hero is a much better phone. Although, development has slowed significantly since the EVO's release. I still feel HTC builds the best Android phones.

look into the intercept or something. There is another Samsung phone that kinda has the build of the Epic 4g but is just an upgraded Intercept. I can't remember the name unfortunately, but it should be on the Sprint website.

I've read on some other forums that the Intercept is just as crappy as the Moment. The other one is called the Transform and I also read that it was buggy. I read that the LG Optimus S is supposed to be pretty good. It is an entry level phone, but ships with FROYO! It's also the best looking of the entry level Androids IMO. I think it comes out next week. You also have the Sanyo Zio as an option which is supposed to be pretty good as well.
How about the LG lotus elite or the LG rumor touch. I know This is probably not the right place to ask but how about blackberry. I know there is a 8330.8530. Bb tour. Bold.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I dunno, I really think Android is the best OS so I can't recommend anything other than Android phones.
The lotus and rumor are both dumbphones - completely different experience. I've handled a non-working model of the optimus though, and I have to say, I was VERY impressed with the build quality. It's a bit heavy for the size, but its a very solid feeling phone, better than any of the samsungs. To the point that it makes me think that LG will be a real player if/when they roll out a high end Android phone.

I would think so - it's an htc android device, and it's dev section here on xda looks pretty active. It's also runs cm. But I don't know if I would want to rely on the dev community entirely if I didn't have to - of course if you get one pretty cheap, the pros might outweigh the cons.
and btw, did you really think anyone on this forum was going to point you to something other than android?
The hero already has 2.2 over there in the dev forum.

In three days my upgrade period is on, I'm getting an Evo, walking out of the Sprint store and smashing my Moment on the concrete as hard as possible.
Are those strong enough words to deter you from getting a Moment? (GPS sucks, data lockup issues if you download too many things or stream music, and overall lag due to no memory) Oh, and the dev community is still going a bit, but the stud developer got an Evo and is working on Evo stuff now.
I got my wife a moment when they first came out. She hates it...nothing but problems, freezes up, no signals, no email notifications, battery sux! Just overall bad phone. I would have to say one of the worst ones we have ever owned.

I am a current hero user and I can honestly say that I hated it out of the box. It was so slow it wasn't funny. But then I found xda and more importantly cyanogenmod for the hero, which is in rc right now. It is an android 2.2 rom that supports overclocking and let me tell you that as much as I would love to have an evo this hero is
Amazing. My wife has the moment and it is ****ty.. Get the hero. Root install cyanogen rom. You won't regret it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a Samsung Moment. The hardware is very bad and has nothing but problems. You will hate that phone. I had huge data lockup issues, no signal, around 4 hours battery life, the phone would mysteriously "black out", GPS was all over the place and laaaaag. At least it was easy to root, but it didn't play nice with root, also the graphics accelerator was a complete joke, so 3d games or any games with multiple layers are totally out of the question. Id go with the hero and OC that bad boy.

Incredible -> Music player?

Welp i had a Dinc for a a bit than bought the droid razr, dont plan on going back to my incredible anytime soon. I have been browsing the roms and other sub catagories for the Dinc, my question is, is there are rom that basically strips down the Dinc, so i can really just use it for a music player? kinda like a ipod of sorts... might be wishful thinking. a friend kinda brought the idea up so i figured i ask.
Thanks!

i would load CM7 on your old incredible because it is the lightest and no bloatware. then there is a script in the dev forum that will turn off cell radio but keep wifi working so your phone battery will last forever on a single charge.
i did this for a bad ESN phone for a friend and he loves it.

Like I said earlier try kid mode from the market. It's kind of a launcher in a way. You set it up so that your kid only has access to certain apps. They can't make calls can't even run the browser unless you allow it. I have it on my phone and I love it.

I was just looking for exactly that. For those that are wondering why a kid would need a smartphone etc., it's not the point. They wouldn't be using it as a smartphone. I have an old SGS1 that I don't see why I couldn't repurpose as a media-player device + for my daughter. An ipod would do the trick but 1) this thing would kick the pants off any ipod I've seen so far capabilities wise (16GB built in, microSD slot up to 32GB, bigger higher resolution screen, play whatever media format you put in it, etc.) and with voodoo sound even the sound quality is better, 2) it's not made by Apple, and 3) I've already got it. I will try the kid mode launcher another poster mentioned below but I think there could be a market for this judging by the amount of kiddie tablets etc. that are on the market now and way cheaper if you already have a device or can pick one up used. Will post back after trying the kid mode deal.
Sounds interesting. Maybe one that is baby proof. So that they can't mess things up like send unwanted messages or delete stuff or make calls. Not so I don't have to watch them but so that I don't have to keep taking it from them
Nova will accomplish all this stuff, or other apps. You just hide apps you don't want them using. Like market, system apps... Etc. The only issue would be browser. But I'm sure that could be dealt with also. And yeah.... If they are sharing the parents phone... What good would a safety rom be when I need my phone. And if it's their phone... It's simple to kid proof. My 5 year old has an s2 we didn't need anymore. It has Netflix, some games, some videos on it.... And just about every thing else is hidden. Never had an issue with her getting into things she shouldn't. As far as games that can lead you to market and purchases.... There's a password for purchases and generally I just get rid of those games.
Anyway.... No, the kids rom would never be made.... But really, once you kid proof your device... That's basically what you have. So there's no point.

Hey, I've been living with a iPod Touch as a make shift phone and it has its ups and downs. The up being the MP3 player of the iPod being far superior, the down is the hell called iTunes. Question: Can I live with iTunes? Ans: I may buy a gun, put one bullet through my PC and then probably me too before I can answer that question with a straight face and say yes. And no. I miss a lot of Android. The copied notification shade is a big sham (though they implemented it different to Android, I can't make it work like I can on the Droid.) you can't access the memory like on the Droid, each app can see only their stuff. No co-operation on the phone. No centralized accounts thingy. All things google can hang themselves. Nah, I give me a Nexus any day. A Dix will be fine too. Only thing I like on iOS is some of their gui graphics (only some, not all) as they look so glossy and chewable. I think that can be taken care of using MIUI.
Side note: Their new Maps seems to have a nicer interface (appearance wise) than Gmaps, but at least for now has no transit routes. Which is all I use maps for. Google should polish its Navigation app. The google maps app on the other hand looks clean and perfect on the Droid. (TL;DR)
Last year my wife got an iPhone and I got my Dinc2. I had very little in the way of iPhone envy and after I rooted and installed ICS, I had none whatsoever. My wife is pretty tech savvy, but she just wants things to work; I love to tinker. Over the past year, it's really been eye-opening for both of us because she struggles to change settings or do things that I don't even have to think about on my Android phone. She's regularly frustrated by Apple's control - even after jailbreaking. The iPad is even worse. I was tempted when the iPhone 4S came out, but after our experiences this year, me with my Dinc2 and her with the iPhone, I'm Android all the way. Even though I'm a die-hard Mac user, I wouldn't buy an iPhone or an iPad. Just my 2 cents.

Hair wondering when you had the iPod touch ? The new ios has where you can interconnect some accounts like fb, Twitter, and instagram which is all most people do anyways. Also, what kind of hell is iTunes? Just wondering on that one. But instead of saying they don't do something or lack an option android has make sure you jailbreak and look for the apps. It's not fair to compare rooted android vs stock ios.

Have you tried the Marketplace section of XDA? People are always buying, selling, or trading all kinds of phones on there. It's worth a shot. You might have to throw down a bit of cash along with the trade, but possibly not. It's worth a shot!
