Scenario 1hone unplugged (meaning not connected to usb cord).
Battery icon on the notification bar shows that it is charging but it isn't. Since the status frequently changes from charging to not charging, the LCD screen won't turn off. And when I turn off the the phone, it shows the battery icon (the one that shows up when you charge the phone while it is turned off). The phone is not even connected to the charger, so why is it showing that?
Scenario 2hone plugged (connected to usb cord and charger)
Battery icon on the notification bar shows that it is charging. Since it sticks to that status (charging status, i mean), the LCD screen now ables to turn off. It also properly charges it self.
I thought that maybe the problem is with the ROM i'm using. So I wiped data and cache and installed a different ROM. It seems that the problem is not with ROM but probably the hardware. Can anybody please help? I already searched the forum regarding this issue but there's none like mine.
The phone is more than a year old so no use on the warranty. This is the first time this happened on the phone. Please help. Thanks. T_T

Most likely there is something wrong with your usb port. So more a hardware than a software problem.

I agree with honeyx on this one. It seems to be hardware problem to me as well.

This seems to be a common issue in the S2 threads as well...in almost every case it's been solved by replacing the usb board....having replaced this board in my wifes S2, I have *some* practical experience of this (yes I know that my experience is with the S2 and not the W). I'll look into it and see what I can find out. .....

Ok...so as this video shows.......
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjcucJDzfmk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
it's going to be way more expensive to replace the usb socket on the W than it is on the S2 due to the fact that the W's usb socket is attached directly to the main board instead of being separate to it (as in the S2)......
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....but unless you're prepared to unsolder the socket from the main board and replace it yourself, all you can do is replace the whole main board.....muchas deneros

Yes. This will be very hard to repair and the chances are high to cause more demage while trying to replace it or to solder broken wires.
As long this is because of broken wires on the PCB and the micro USB plug is in good condition I found the following solution to work best. First make sure the usb plug dosn´t move on the pcb. Else use some superglue to fix this, but be carefull the glue doesn´t flow inside the plug. Secound use some fine sandpaper to remove the layer of isulation paint where the wires are broken. Then use some conductive silverpaint to connect them again. After the paint is hardened use a needle to remove the paint "between" the wires, so there is just paint where it has to be to connect the broken wires. Use a DMM to check the connections and to make sure there are no connections beteen all the other wires. When you are done check if the USB plug is working again like expected.

My Evo recently started to answers the phone with the speaker phone enabled. Its super irritating as I have to click on the speaker phone for it to go back to normal. I googled online and some people say removing the battery works. However, i tried it but it still answers with the speaker phone on.
What rom setup are you using, I had the same problem using deck's 1.0 GB rom with sz 2.1.0 kernel. I did a full wipe and fresh install and the problem went away... its worth a try.

Im running Fresh v3.5.0.1 and netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-nosbc-havs-less-universal-signed kernel.
Im in the process of backing up all my data to do a factory wipe and moving to MikFroYo v4.62. Hope its a software glitch and not hardware.
Just did a factory wipe (2x's), then cleared cache/davik (2x's) to be safe. Then installed MikFroYo v4.62. On first boot it goes directly to Car Dock. Im beginning to think its a hardware problem as I read online car dock runs when there is a short on the usb pins.
Unrooted and rolled back to the stock Sprint RUU. Everything is stock and it still has this speaker/car dock problem. I found this video on google and they talk about a DIY car dock usb cable. Apparently, car dock activates when pins 4 & 5 on the usb cable is shorted. Normally, Pin 4 is not used and Pin 5 is ground.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsshBuX-DfQ
In a normal USB cable, the wires are connected to the pins in a specific order.
For example:
Pin Name Cable color Description
1 VCC Red +5 VDC
2 D- White USB Data -
3 D+ Green USB Data +
4
5 GND Black Ground
So, with a micro usb cabled plugged into the phone I wiggle the usb connector and sure enough car dock fires up. Definetly a hardware issue. I hope Sprint will fix this one under the HTC 1yr warranty.
I believe it to be a hardware issue as well. My Evo started having this issue last week. Annoying as all hell but after trying different kernels and Roms and having no luck i started looking online for answers.
I tried cleaning the port and no luck.
I have a aftermarket plain Jane normal USB cord then i have an adapter that goes from normal USB (like BB Pearl) to mini USB for the Evo and its the only thing that will snap it out of the car mode. But only while its plugged in it will snap out of it.
If i unplug it or try using stock USB cord then it goes back into the car mode/ speaker phone frenzy/ cant use volume controls for playing music on ear phones.
This is a launch day Evo so its seen its fair share of bumps/ drops/ wear n tear but as of yesterday its after that 1 year mark. Not sure if they would warranty it now.
But alas, if they dont then i suppose i can use the insurance.
Ill keep this thread updated if i find anything solid that works.
Thanks,
wrong thread sorry.
Sprint replaced my phone under the hardware warranty ($35). I think it had to do with my phone looking like brand new with no scratches and stuff. Either way the shop said they never experienced the speaker phone problem but they usually get the bad usb port from users who cant charge.
Hey Sonjiin - Since you have also have a launch day phone. Today makes 1yr. Take it in and see if they will replace it. Good Luck!
I tried cleaning the port with Electronics contact cleaner and a cotton swab and like an idiot i used a bit to much and it got under the screen. The thing still works like a champ but it still didnt fix my issue. I ended up claiming Insurance on it. Ill be getting my replacement phone sometime today.

Good find on that man. I work in a Sprint service center and I tried replacing the charging port with a new one and it did the trick! Never would have guessed it to be a charging port issue. I would say it is either that, or if the solder on the ports bridges the connection between the 4th and 5th pin, shorting them out. Either way, that definitely fixed the problem. Great find. Thanks button has been clicked.
This is a very old thread, but there are TONS of them across the web with zero solutions... so if someone else should search for this like I did, I want to save them the trouble.
I was also having the problem that my phone would jump into dock mode constantly, and forcefully removing the dock app did little to help. While the speakerphone issue is annoying, the WORST part was that it kept turning on my screen randomly, and it leaves the screen on.
Anyway, the fix is to use an app called NoDock by NOTHIZE. You need to be rooted, but if you're not rooted, what the hell are you doing here?!?! It completely removed the issue for me, which is incredible. They do have a trial version that you can test for 7 days before you buy it, but they kind of have you over the barrel on this one: I tried a few other Play Store apps with no success.
And if you see this exact post a few places on the internet, it's because I'm just active enough to try to help others (I'm pretty excited right now that this is fixed) but I'm too lazy to do any major editing of my comments.
Easy Fix
I think I just figured it out. Free some space on your darn phone. Lol. Delete some of your text messages (Especially if you have conversations saved with 200+ messages). Move your big apps to you SD card (ex: Angry birds at 29+ Meg). Then pull the battery. Put the battery back in. Fixed my Evo.
I hope I'm as lucky as you.

Bah.... checked and my internal memory still has 250MB free... (reverted ext-3 to 2). Jiggling it doesn't do anything to mine. SIGGGGGh
It been a while sense I've messed with this. I have two galaxy nexus one is pretty tore up so I've been using it to charge my batteries. My good one will not charge even after micro usb port swapping.
The one that won't charge my batteries: I don't know why it won't charge. I swapped the hardware. It all started when I flashed slim over I think it was Kang. While I was on Kang(I think it was that one at least) I messed with some advanced battery settings and forgot or didn't think it metered switching them back. I can only assume this is the culprit.
It will recognize the AC charging but it will not charge or it will only De charge my batteries. If anyone can suggest anything please let me know.
Thank you.

Flash a stock build to isolate it as hardware.

I've got one that is doing the exact same thing. It connects to the PC ok, and shows the charging symbol but when you check under status it shows as not charging.
I took it completely apart, cleaned the logic board with a soft bristle toothbrush in case it had any thing that might be causing it to short, and even replaced the usb charging port flex cable.
I have noticed that when I plug it into the usb ports on my HDD docking station that it makes a low barely audible static like sound. my other working Galaxy Nexus doesn't do this.

OK an update to this, if I run the factory Jellybean 4.1.2 image or CM10 it still shows the charging symbol and shows as not charging in the status info, but if the phone is left alone the battery does charge. If I run the 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 factory image or CM10.1 it doesn't charge unless the phone is turned off.
very bizarre.

That is somewhat odd that it will trickle charge yet. That usually is indicative of the usb flex being bad ... that or a bad charging cable but i assume that you have tried that already. Do you have data connectivity yet on this device? Usually you lose that when something like this happens, at least when it has for me. Do you flash the factory image via fastboot or odin ... You could try to odin it to ensure that everything is stock. But since your bootloader is charging that kinda rules out hardware especially since you said that you have changed it already. Only other thing i can think of is a kernel issue but that would be taken care of when flashing stock if you flashed via bootloader.
A few days the phone stopped being able to charge while on/off from both wall/USB. Suspected it was due to the flex. Ordered one off of Ebay and when it came it looked identical to the one in the phone. Phone is about 14 months old so no more warranty (got it at IO 2012)
I did the standard instructions of removing the 6 screws with the battery and SIM card. Prying off the back cover, removing the screw for the bottom module along with the ribbon.
Disconnect the antenna, screen ribbon cable and the ribbon cable to the flex from mainboard. Replaced the flex underneath the vibration module and closed it all back up making sure to connect the 2 ribbon cables, the antenna and the cable from the bottom module to the flex but it still won't charge.
I can get it to be recognized in computer as a MTP/PTP device but it still won't charge from computer or wall while on or off. Is there anything else I can do or is this gone forever. Tried a factory reset as well but still won't charge, it was originally just running stock 4.3. Thanks.
EDIT: Battery under Settings says charging at the bottom but not at the top...

Get yourself a wall charger and 2 batteries. Rotate them.
For files you can use bluetooth, NFC, drop box, drive, copy , flicker, box, etc...
Edit: never mind. It connects just doesn't charge.

Yea to clarify before I changed the flex, the phone couldnt connect be recognized by computer on USB. Now I have at least that but nothing else.
I have the same problem but my nexus is already in warranty, so I try to resolve this problem with samsung!
my problema is backwards
After replaced the USB flat i can charge the phone, but the computer not recognizing
I have the exact same problem. Replaced flex cable, still no charge. My pc recognized it with the old and new charge port as well. I had to re-activate my OG Droid until either the new HTC and G5 phones come out...sigh
long shot, but clean-up gold phone contact points for better conductivity?
Same Here
I think it happened after flashing 4.4.2 roms, i tried to flash different roms different cables, wall,pc,ps..nothing worked if it is on.When i turn off the gnex it is charging..Anyone?
I think i have solved mine
Well it was getting really weird like discharging while it is connected(turned off). So i thought it is not related to rom. So i wiped dalvik cache and now it looks ok
Any news on this topic? I've got the same problem, swapped the USB flex cable and it still isn't charging. I can connect via ADB though and in the battery details menu it says "charging" at the bottom, although it obviously isn't.
Hello guys a friend of me got a litte problem.
His kittien gave while playing his glas filled with icetea a nice kick . The iicetea got on his Phone but it works normal except that the USB Port isnt working anymore . He cant recharge his Phone or connect it via usb to his Computer .
He thought about sending in to Samsung but his Phone is flashed and to revert to Stock we need odin etc .
So maybe someone knows a solution how tto repair his usb port .
May bay ace is broken
So maybe buy a new flex and replace it ?
Just reset binary counter and system status using triangle away app then download an official firmware and flash it via mobile odin app.

Easy enough to replace.
New Flex cable costs less than £10. take the back cover off and remove all screws around the edge. then use a plastic lever to lift the bezel off the screen and remove the Speaker cover.
unplug the old and plug in the new flex cable for usb
I need to do it to my phone however I am using wireless charger to charge the phone and airdroid to transfer files wirelessly.
So in all honesty I have no need to replace it momentarily.

Example flex cable
How to replace flex cable
(Not a native english speaker, sorry for any bad writing) Good Afternoon, first post made in this forum and I'm very desperate to find out why my tablet is not charging, I have tryed with 2 different charges and 3 usb cables but nothing, but when i connect a OTG cable with or without a USB pendrive in it, this will be recognized so i'm not not sure what the problem may be.
It is the chargers?
The Micro USB cables?
Or the Power Source?
Plz help me. Thank you.
Edit: Forgot to add, it will occasionally after several Hours to start charging back, but if i move it just a little bit it will stop charging.

This is your problem: loose USB charging port. Search Ebay for this part, may be cheaper if from China
Be aware that a defective USB port can read data but not charging or vice versa.

Replace this one is easy, just need taking the back cover off, remove two screws from this USB flex FPCB. Make sure search YouTube how to open the rear cover. Open the wrong way, you'll permanent damage it. Don't ever use metal prying tool to open the case.
This one is just an example:
