[Q] Where do these APKs that people post come from? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
While searching for ways to install Google Car Home on my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon), I see lots of posts where people make the Car Home apks available for others to download.
Where do these apks come from? What I'd really like to know, how can I get this kind of apk without having to trust someone else who posted it? How can I get something like that from the source?
Does Google post these files on their site? Or maybe the source code?
There is a guide on a roundabout way to getting Google Wallet installed: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/02/0...m-the-market-on-the-verizon-lte-galaxy-nexus/
I tried to do the same thing for Car Home, but it didn't work.

By pulling them from ROMs and dumps.

Hi!
So do any of these images have the Car Home app? https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Also, are there any pointers on pulling an apk from a ROM?

Ahh... true that - sorry I missed the link with image files.
Here are the apk's if you want. I have used them for over a year without any issues. Not sure where to look for pulling them from an image.

thanks! i posted this thread in there for the exact font, got a response that someone will work on it so hopefully all is good! thanks for the lead!! (post thanked as well)
Took me a few minutes to figure out how to install them as i never had a need until this phone.
Basically go to the thread link above on your phone and download the ones you want. Then in the browser, bring up the menu and go to More->Downloads and then click the fonts you downloaded and install them.
Then go into the phone Settings->Display-_Screen Display->Font Style.
Easy!

Android Gingerbread OS File List

I've looked but I would really like to find a complete list of what all the apk files are along with what they represent in Gingerbread 2.3.x.
Mainly for the purpose of replacing /system/app files with versions out of necessity or for purely esthetic reasons.
Ummm maybe read calks bare rom converter?
That is only a list of stripped apps from his rom. I would like a list of all the apk files AND what they represent.
For instance, Camera.APK is the Camera App (pretty obvious).
However, ChocoEUKor.APK is not as obvious.

It's a tough search. There are plenty of bloatware removal lists but not a complete apk list with descriptions.
I'll keep looking thanks.
Here are two list that I just made of the system app folder of EL29 Gingerbread Stock rom. Hope this helps.
They are in a zip file. One is a .csv and the other is a .pdf. If you need them in another format let me know. It does not tell the function of all files but has a list of them.

Ok sorry about that. I am uploading again to this post. I used winrar this time. Hopefully it works. I will test it before posting but just let me know if it doesn't work for you.
EDIT: I tested and it opened fine this time around. Sorry to the mishap.

Hint: AOSP 4.1.1 source and Toro not showing as a target under 'lunch'

In case anyone is having trouble finding toro as a device target when trying to build from the list of targets from the 'lunch' command... Toro didn't show up in the list but I was able to manually specify it rather than selecting a numeric option.
Devs probably know that works, but amateurs like myself might benefit from that tidbit. Jellybean seems to be building OK for me now.
EDIT: I was asked what I did, more specifically, so I'll put that here in op:
Rather than enter a numeric choice, I entered 'full_toro-userdebug'. Apparently this was a valid response and the build proceeded.
Mind explaining how you manually selected it?

Not at all. Rather than selecting say, 11 or another choice, I entered: full_toro-userdebug. Apparently this was a valid response and the build proceeded.
question... not much into actual developing here but i know my way around the inside of a rom or two... once you compile. will it be a fully capable rom? as in (what the OTA will be like without VZ apps)?

It's not as 'polished'. There are no gapps, the dictionary is not complete (need a version from a factory image/rom), there are extra keyboards (Japanese?), maybe a couple other oddities as compared to a stock ROM. It will certainly be more capable that porting a gsm rom to toro, that's for sure .

You edit the source files. The goodies you want are in the res folder of most applications. /packages/apps in the source code. Here's my question, when I boot it gets to the Google screen and then a black screen. I suspect this here. When I start the build I see this:
Code:
find: 'src': No such file or directory.
PRODUCT_COPY_FILES device/generic/goldfish/data/etc/apns-conf.xml:system/etc/apns-conf.xml ignored.
... Many more of these Product copy ignored things...
And then it finishes compiling. What's up here, I'm pretty sure it's missing drivers and stuff!

Did you install the binaries for toro? There is also a script that will pull them from your phone (so a stock rom is best), which may be better because Google can't give you everything you need for a functional rom (GPS for example). I ended up copying those files from a stock image to my compiled rom.
i got my binaries from here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/drivers#torojro03c

For future reference, what he's referring to is the extract-files.sh script included in the CM source. If you cannot find the proprietary binaries for a certain device you wanna build for, plug in the phone via usb, cd to the directory with the script and execute the command.

I also got version 4.0.9.99.999.9999.99999 when I synced to the master branch. Thanks for mentioning the workaround to sync with 4.1.1_r1 .
Did you figure out if it's a problem to sync 4.1.1 into a directory that's already synced with master (4.0.9.99...)?
--------------------------------
Update: I think I can answer this question based on JBQ's response:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/android-building/rtH5ZbJC7qU/-N1lr9MqexYJ
"You can also switch in place: just run "repo init -b <new_manifest_branch>; repo sync" in your existing client."
Sounds like syncing to a new branch in the same working directory should work just fine.

Port CM10 Phone.apk to 4.2

Hey guys, since I am a noob in Android development in general, can someone please port the Phone.apk (attached) to Stock JB 4.2 with or without odex file.
I haven't tested this apk yet on 4.2 because I am paranoid. Or anyone can provide me information regarding if it would work directly (without porting).
My main idea behind porting is because of vibration (while call pickup and hang up) stuff that CM provides.
Thank you.
*BUMP*
I tried on Bigxie's Deodexed 4.2 ROM and it force closes. So can anyone please port it.
Install as a system apk and it should work just fine.

just pull it from the rom and push to system
Not going to work.
I read somewhere that the Phone.apk have to be signed by the signature that sign the ROM.
I'm pretty sure the way i phrase is not completely correct but i'm sure you can get the idea.
To the guys who are saying to install as a system app: I, in the first place pushed the APK using zip file but it didn't work. Mach3.2 might be correct. If you guys want to know why I want a port for it, just ask away.

JOP40D Stock Wifi Tethering

RE: Sprint, Glaxy Nexus running Stock 4.2.1:
Has anyone found a way to enable wifi tethering with a rooted stock JOP40D yet?
Oh no, three angels have fallen from grace as a result of your mis-leading title and posting in the wrong section.
Now for the goods I was gonna do the hack for that but I won't have time, its simple to do all you need its apktools and the knowledge of how to use it and you're good to go.
1. use apktool to de-compile framework-res.apk
2. navigate to res/values/arrays.xml
3. open arrays.xml in a notepad editor
4. edit the line "config_tether_upstream_types" change the 4 to a 5
5. save changes and re-compile framework-res.apk
from there you will be able to tether

wrong thread? I am talking about a Sprint, Galaxy Nexus running JOP40D stock and rooted and the wifi tethering functionality, this requires some dev work (see post above yours). so maybe I should have been more descriptive in my title or even my post I guess I assumed since I posted it in here it would be obvious sorry to anyone who may have been confused or mislead, if a mod wants to move it no worries :good:
Anyways... I will try the decompile/recompile steps and see if that works, I just didnt want to re-invent the wheel if someone already had done it
thanks!

Thanks this worked perfectly! For anyone choosing to do this things to note:
1. It will wipe your google account so you will have to re-login and setup the gapps
2. the framework-res.apk size will not be the same (in my case it was either a full MB larger if I unzip/reziped it with my changes or 4 MB smaller if I just dropped my new resources.arsc into the original apk.. very big size difference but everything still boots up and works *shrug*

hedrickms, first of all, thank you very much for doing this and posting it for the rest of us.
Would it be possible to post a "back to stock/restore to Sprint configuration" flashable .zip, just in case? (It's always nice to have that available in case I need my phone to appear to be truly unrooted and stock.)
-- Andrew
OK not sure if this works but here is a flashable .zip to return tethering to Stock (Locked) state. I did not flash this to see if it works so if you have issues please let me know and I will see what went wrong. The "tethering_4.2.1_Return_Stock.zip" is for Sprint Android 4.2.1 only and will not work with 4.1.1 or 4.1.2.
