When in the car, I would like my screen to stay on when charging.
I found a way to do this by going to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Stay Awake
However the screen may stay on, but it still dims after X minutes (depending on the Time-out settings) so i cant see a thing on my phone during daytime.
I can ofcourse set the time-out to 30 minutes, but i dont want my screen to stay on full brightness for 30 mins when its NOT charging!
Anyone got an idea?
Thanks!
Setting profiles mate. You can set different profiles for when it is charging, including keeping the screen on, and when you unplug it, it goes back to normal. I've been using it for quite a while and it works spot on
Cheers

Sorry I'm a bit of a Droid newb. On my old 6,5 winmo there was a slider for brightness on battery and brightness on charge.
Is this profile setting stashed within the settings somewhere or is it an app?
Thanks for your help
Another way of doing this is to activate car dock mode when you're in the car. There are some apps that allow you to manually activate various dock modes, and I think when in car dock mode the screen stays on all the time at full brightness.
The app I used is called 'dock simulator' or something like that on the market, and it's free.
Sweet thanks. Any idea how to lose the logo?

Yea but as already said in post 1 the screen dims.
found a problem with the dock app where it puts calls out on the loudspeaker, and you get the icon.... damn!
you can always download power manager from the market and set to never dim/timeout
Yes but then it eats the battery

Ok seriously what's wrong with you you've started a thread cos ur screen dims, get use to it! Of course if you keep your screen on your battery will die quick you can't have everything
I agree this is annoying, when you have the phone plugged into the charger it would be great if the screen didn't dim, happens sometimes when I'm reading ebooks on my phone, don't want to change the dim settings as I want the screen timeout to kick in when not plugged into the charger.
Is there any app that wont let the cpu go to sleep when the screen is turned off and wifi is running with file transfer? cuz no matter which program i try. Transfer speed always slows down to 40% once monitor off. I think the cpu is downclocked.

Sorry I thought this was a forum to help people over come issues. looks like you may be in the right place.
1. I never started the thread
2. the initial thread was started by some who has the same problem as me. This means I am not the only one with the problem and maybe it's worth solving
3. The thread was started because on power, in the car the screen dims and I want it bright as I can't see it in the sun. I want an app or a setting so when the device detects its on power it does not dim the screen.
quote from post 1
"I can of course set the time-out to 30 minutes, but i don't want my screen to stay on full brightness for 30 mins when its NOT charging!"
I know this is possible because dock simulator does this but has unwanted side effects ( phone on loudspeaker ) I know I could just fix the brightness on every visit to the car but this is a pain in the ass and I will forget to disable it and flatten my battery.
I could do this on win mo 6.5 and android is a much more flexible operating system.
Sorry if this post covered old ground but I found your last post rather provoking and I would prefer if you directed similar posts, elsewhere.
Thanks to everyone else who has guided in the right direction so far..
I have the same problem and when I asked before I got the same (none) answers.
It is one of the very few flaws I have with Android.
On WiMo I could leave the browser with the traffic site active and VISIBLE in my car charger and I could hit refresh now with android I have to touch the screen to activate the backlight and then refresh the site if I want an update.
I too just want the backlight to stay on ONLY when the phone is on external power, it can't be that hard and it shouldn't involve installing elaborate programs that consume more of the little precious memory I have left (until FroYo ...)
try an app called 'Caffine' from the marketplace its free and does the job perfectly
Thanks I'll give it a try.
Firstly I love this phone. After working through 4 Samsung Galaxy S's to finally ask to be switched away from it to this, I was very happy.
This phone is rock solid.
BUT. I have a problem. I like to use maps or nav in my car. I have the phone plugged in but after the timeout period the screen goes dim. I'm normally OK with that but the dim setting on this phone seems to be ridiculously dark!
To your knowledge, without rooting it to get the Cyanogen settings, is there a way to brighten the dimmed level of brightness?
I have tried disabling the auto-brightness and bumping it up but still after the timeout period it dims very dark.
How about a toggle or widget to keep the screen always on? There are quite a few available I reckon. I know its one extra step to carry out whereas you are looking for something more automated. Maybe there is an app that can let you make a list of apps that enable screen always on?... Not sure about that but worth a look eh?
i do use a switch with Extended Controls widget.
the problem isnt that it dimms, it's that when it does dim it is far too dark.
When the samsung went to the dim setting it was still viewable.
If i remember right when i had it plugged in it would not dim if i was viewing maps.
anyways, the phone as it is is useless when it dims. i can touch the screen to bring back the brightness. I can set the timeout period to 30 minutes, but all of this requires that i re-activate the screen to bring it back.
i guess i am seeing one more reason to root the device. i'm nervous about rooting and would prefer to not have to if i dont need to.

This is a characteristic of the software that you are using. The software needs to establish a WAKE LOCK in order to keep the screen bright. If it isn't working, then there is something wrong with the software you are using. I suggest using COPILOT for navigation. It works properly.

agreed, the software is probably working properly. google navigation does not time out. google maps does and they dont give you an option to have it not time out when plugged in. silly if you ask me.
i dont mind that as much as i mind how much it dims.
Does anyone else find that the desire z dims too dark?
anyways, i may be beating a dead horse here. trying to get blood from a stone and all that.
well if anyone has any other ideas that would be helpful. thanks for the suggestions thus far.
Hi am looking for an app that will still allow my phone to dim after so many seconds but not completely off. Anybody know of one or know how to do it with android?

My old phone had a car mode that kept the screen on dim and unlocked. It was real handy for stuff like pandora. I think android has pulled it since 2.2 but im also interested in something like this for ics
Actually this still works, first figure out hoe to launch car mode from that vlingo app or download a car mode launcher app. Next download an app called car dock settings by ig88 and uncheck all the options except disable screen timeout. Now whenever the phone is in car mode after 30 seconds or whatever it will just dim but not lock. There must be a better way though.
You know most phones have had this option in the apps development settings to have screen always on when charging. It would eventually dim but never time out or turn off. I believe it's disabled on our phones due to that it uses an amoled screen. Leaving amoled screens on for long periods of time with a static image will cause the image to be burnt onto the screen. You can try searching the market for screen timeout for apps that will allow this and I believe there were some roms that allowed longer screen time out time and also the development option of screen always on, but just be careful that it will have a negative impact on the life of your screen.

Can't find another question like this one... so here goes:
Just got a Moto 360 for 149.99 USD and its great so far.
Did that force update to 5.1.1, this one worked for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/moto360/comments/3ahj1l/a_surefire_way_to_force_the_511_update/
Now I look into turning off the screen when its charging, only to run into a very strange issue...
In the developer options, which you can enable using 10 taps on the build number in about, there are two options:
1) stay awake while charging
2) burn-in protection
Burn-in protection will NOT save the check when your restart, so in essence, is useless.
However I found that using stay awake while charging DOES indeed turn off the screen, but here's the catch: you have to set it to ENABLED.
Don't believe I have ever seen a setting on android that required it to be on, to be off...
But hey, it does work, on mine at least.
Also the whole "just hit the button to make the screen go off" ONLY works in Theater Mode! And I personally dont like pushing a button to check the time.
If Theater Mode is off, it will just brighten the screen for around 2 seconds, then dim again.
Here's my question, what does that burn-in protection do anyways? Just pixel shift over time? Why can't it be enabled?
Hope this helps some people!
that setting does nothing for me
the screen stays awake regardless of ENABLED or DISABLED
funny how motorola hasn't fixed this yet
just put watch in "Theater mode" before charging
and it would switch the screen off on charger too

It started on mine, in the dock. Every few minutes everything on the display jumps in size from small to large and vice visa
The staying awake feature is backwards. Crazy

I restarted mine after setting to enabled, also ambient / theater mode are both off.
Hi,
as ShadowVlican wrote: just enable the theater mode to switch the screen off during charging. It is also important, the you undo any changes you did in the developer menu ("stay awake while charging" and the "burn in protection" as well).

Yeah, no. My screen turns off for 10 seconds then just becomes dim black with backlight again.
Is there no damn working solution?!
Has anyone noticed any issues while using Lightflow? I have been having issues where my phone won't turn on for about 20-30 seconds sometimes and I have turned everything off and Lightflow was the last that I turned off and so far I have not had this issue again yet. I'm just wondering if anyone else had seen this as well.
I had an issue where I would charge my phone at night. I would wake up in the morning and try to turn the screen on but it would stay off. I would have to reboot it to get it to work. The second time I unplugged the phone and could tell it was unlocking with the finger print reader but the screen would not come on. I forced the reboot and when it came back up I had a notification that lightflow was using more battery than it should. Uninstalled it and haven't had the problem since.
Yeah that app got wayyyy to complicated years ago.
I use Lightmanager now. Much simpler havent had any issues
Light Flow seems to be working well on my 2XL.
As far as Light Flow being complicated, it does have a lot of options but that's a good thing IMO, not a negative.
The devs are attempting to make a program that works well with all brands of phones and Samsung, HTC and LG seem to have different methods for controlling the LED.
Light Flow can bypass the OS to control the LED.
I would suggest you email the developer before you give up or move to another program.
I think Light Flow used to have their own forum here on XDA and maybe they still do.
Seems Navigation Bar Hider can have that same effect. Just installed it last night, and had my first experience with that effect. It's a lot less scary now that I know it's not just my phone, or just one app doing it. I wonder if it's the phone, the OS, or the Apps implementation on the OS. I personally think it's more software based though.
Update: Just looked at Light Flow (never used it personally). It looks like it has an effect with the lock screen. It's a theory, and I don't actually plan to test it if I don't have to, but I THINK both it and Nav Bar Hider having an effect with lock screens (with how I had it set up to be active with everything) is what causes it to not come on when you unlock after extended time. Since i have tuned hider to specific apps instead of generically on by default for everything, the symptom has not come back.
Are you on 8.1? A lot of users have been having a similar issue on the beta.
I've had better luck on Pixels with Light Flow Legacy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlegacy
no issues for me with lightflow on 8.0 or 8.1 so far...
Working fine on mine with 8.0.

Do you have anything enabled under Device Settings and Root, or LED control? Been hit or miss for me on 2 XL, have root enabled.

I do not, not rooted.
only thing checked there is the nexus 5 setting, it must have been enabled by default, I don't remember ticking it.
Hows the battery usage with lightflow anymore? I abandoned it when I got my Nexus 6P as the device would never sleep with lightflow.

Ive never had an issue with it, using it since Nexus 5.
No issues here with my 6p or pixel2 other then it seems to go to sleep if my phone is motionless. Once I wake the screen the led comes on. No battery drain either.

Hello everyone,
I seem to be only able to get Light Flow(Paid version) to work but only while the screen is off and not while the screen is on. I am rooted and I tried setting the options for both root on and root off and I have the option set for the LED to be always on while the screen is on, but again I can only get the LED to show with the app while the screen is off. I'm hoping that someone here can help me out by sharing their settings that they are using that enable them to have the LED on while the screen is either on or off. Maybe they could even share their own settings backup file if they have the app working while the screen is on?
I don't use light flow but I do use immersive mode for the navigation bar and I too have the same issue with the screen not coming in once I plug the charger in. I have to hard reboot the phone. I thought it was the Root causing the issue but it's not. I think it happens when hide the navigation bar

It is a hiding the nav bar issue. The dev behind "Custom Navigation Bar" has supposedly figured out the problem and said that it doesn't happen when using that app for immersive mode.

Thank you sir I'm now using the custom navigation bar app and I have not had any issues so far.
Hello everyone,
I asked a question last week but I think it may have been missed or overlooked, so I am bumping it in hopes of getting an answer.
is anyone here able to get the paid version of this app to show/change the notification LED while the screen is on? I am able to change the color of the LED and it shows for all the notifications that I have set while the screen is off, but no matter what I do, I'm unable to get the LED to light up with my notifications while the screen is turned on, even though I have the setting enabled to do so.
So I would like to know what settings ppl are using to enable the LED to light up while the screen is either off or on? because ppl have mentioned in this thread that they have the app working for both screen off and on, so if someone that has this working could please share how they have the app configured, or what they did to get this feature working, then it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot guys...
