Google No Longer Supports the LTE - CDMA Verizon Galaxy Nexus? - Updated, New Info.

Update: It looks like all CDMA devices are no longer supported, this includes the Nexus S 4G on sprint.
Update 2: There's no evidence that this will negatively impact end users and OTA's. Things are still unfolding...
Update 3: Google WILL continue to support the Verizon Galaxy Nexus via OTA's. You can put the pitch forks away if you're not a dev and just want OTA's.

This would not surprise me. Remember this is still Verizon (Major Carrier). They still want control of the devices on their networks. Kudos to them for giving users the choice of the Galaxy Nexus even though its not considered their flagship. Google not providing the device support in the future will be very bad but this shows that updates will have to come from Verizon.

I am soooo pissed I can barely type. I hope this is a mistake.

Someone might as well get the petition going now. The war has already broken out in the Droid Life comments. For User's Unlocked/Rooted/ROM'ed this isn't as big a blow but the reason most of us purchased the device was because it was a developer phone. Verizon's refusal to allow Google Wallet and support the openess of a developer phone could easily have caused this. My speculation is that Verizon doesn't want to roll out updates as fast as Google wants too and there is some kind of conflict there. Considering there is a leaked 4.0.4 and we haven't seen 4.0.3 released officially is good evidence of this. Just my opinion.

LOL like Verizon or Google will listen to some pissed off people who signed a petition. Google has its principles and has obviously decided that the LTE version isn't suitable as a reference device given Verizon's mucking it up.

I'm pretty cynical when it comes to this sort of stuff as well but someone should feel some push back as a result of this. I purchased this phone for Google support, I wanted to get a way from Verizon.

Seriously, merge these threads into one. That page has nothing to do with updates.
The page stating CDMA devices aren't supported is for building AOSP builds for target devices. It has nothing to do with OTA updates.
You'll notice another Nexus CDMA device missing, the Nexus S 4G. Guess where it gets its updates from and always has (it's not Sprint)?

I know what you're saying, but at the end of the day you bought a locked CDMA phone on Verizon. You will never get away from Verizon unless you switch carriers and buy a different phone : / The nexus is a little farther away from Verizon compared to a "Droid" but you're crazy if you thought you were going to be as free as a bird when you bought a Nexus on big red.

This happened with the Nexus One on Vodafone as well. It wasn't the "end" then and it won't be the "end" now.

It's a little early to tell, but if this turns out to be true I'm going to the Verizon store and going to raise hell. I will cancel my contract over this.

Happens to the best of us. Just bringing perspective here. I always thought it was funny that all of these Verizon people thought they were "sticking it to the carrier" by buying a Verizon Galaxy Nexus...

Filled with quite a bit of miss information tbh.
They state the latest version of pics is 4.0.3. Its not that's only source code. And complain that peoples new phones are still on 4.0.1. That's correct but so are most retail versions.
I'd be pissed if I had a version version. But I'm not surprised as most carriers seen to want control. But the winging from .au is a bit petty. Its only mi cute builds, not like they are major builds behind.

These are my thoughts exactly. Google has repeatedly shown that they are very innovative and forward thinking. Updates are moving too fast and Big Red does not want to move that fast if at all.

I've been considering paying the ETF and leaving for awhile now. The only thing holding me to stay has been my unlimited data I was grandfathered into, but I'm sure that won't last much longer with the way things have been going (throttling etc.). I'll probably buy a GSM nexus and go month to month on another carrier. It's kind of the final straw.

Why is this such a big issue ? The ability to apply the stock yoku OS is available. Once that's done the phone will receive Google updates,especially for unlocked GNex

Hi all. I just got my GNex from Verizon. I've heard things about this phone on the CDMA side being abandoned by devs. Is this true? If so, should I get a different phone (I still have 9 days to take it back)? I'm coming from a DX, so I love hacking and flashing.. If this phone is still a keeper...can someone point me in the right direction to a thread for rooting and ROMs and flashing (oh my!)?

Google just dropped it as a developer phone. the updates will still be rolling out.Google stated that clearly. the update might take a bit longer than the GSM nexus..but v will still get it....
trust me the nexus will see updates quicker than anybody.
the nexus will see official version 5.0 android os... None of the Droid line ups will see official android 5.0 version on them..trust me

Take it back. Get the GSM version. Get anything else.
CDMA is pretty **** to begin with, but Google has admitted that AOSP Android cannot fully support CDMA. You cannot use the Android source to create a working CDMA build without proprietary blobs, delivered by Google, if the carrier permits it.
Google's support for CDMA depends on carriers permitting it. On a Nexus device.
Think about that.
You wont find any shennigance like that in the GSM world because the system is not ass-****ed enough to begin with to allow such carrier-control. GSM is open. GSM is the freedom you want.
Yes. Like the poeople here will tell you: For now the CDMA devs can hack a release together just fine. They can give you a working ROM based on hacking blobs and Android source. But no, but there are no guarantees it will remain that way. One day, you might be out of luck.
The CDMA/Verizon Galaxy Nexus is a carrier-neutered Nexus. It's not the real goods. And it never was. Think about the months delayed release, because a carrier had objections to what Google put on a "clean" developer phone.
The result is carrier bloatware, and Android features like tethering removed.
The CDMA/Verizon Nexus: It's not what you want. It wasn't when it was announced, and with AOSP support taken back, it definitely isn't now.
Just return that POS and get anything else. I've had non-Nexus phones miles more open than the "Verizon Nexus". It's a joke. It's the laughing-stock of the internet.

Funny thing is, on ICS the bloatware can be "Disabled" which is basically the same thing as freezing the app in TiBu which also removes it from your app drawer and stops it from running, essentially removing it from your phone.
Oh and I think what he means in terms of tether is that you have to pay to use it, which is the same with any other carrier just with the CDMA model it is pre built in that it is blocked.

On all carriers I have had, I pay for data. How I use it is entirely up to me. Tethering is a phone-level function and not anything the carrier can or should control.
And least of all disable or strip free, built-in tethering from the phone. Jesus christ that is invasive to the point of being illegal where I live.

In the rest of the world, you'd return the phone over a defect like that.

You are free to use data as you wish, as it is pre defined in your agreement you make with the carrier when you use their network. Verizon has tethering in their contract as a paid service. I understand it may be different where you live but here in the states that's just how it is.
The tethering is usable once you enable a tethering plan to your account so why would they remove it?
Yes there is a free market out there but there are also contracts we sign so we can use these phones, and like I said it may be different around here than it is out there.

If you don't have the technical knowledge, then don't speak of what you do not know.
They stripped nothing. They have a provisioning apk in place for legit users. Its easily bypassed and we leave it out of aosp.

[Q] Should I buy a Galaxy Nexus? Coming from SGSII Exynos

So it's been a couple of months since the Galaxy Nexus came out so I think I'll get better information now as opposed to when it first came out.
I have an AT&T GSII and I love it. I have the ICScrewd rom on it and it's very fast and fluid and I also have a 16GB card to bring my total storage space to 32GB which is nice since I have a lot of pictures on my device. The screen isn't 720p and that's something I'd love to have and I'd also love to have ICS.
I'd have to sell my GSII for hopefully $350 and I'd also sell a Captivate I have (it's cracked but still works fine so I'd sell it for maybe $60-$80) and pay the difference for a GN (probably $140 out of pocket).
What would you all suggest based on your experience with the GN and GSII (Exynos) if you had it?

The experience is still the same as day one. Very fast and quick phone, so no the information you get from those other threads compared to this one won't be much.
No regrets using the GN, came from Nexus S and Galaxy S (Vibrant) before that.

Do it.

Never used a iPhone 4 so I wouldn't know how to compare it.
I haven't gotten a scratch on it. No screen protector, just Otterbox Commuter + Extended GSM battery.
The screen itself is fortified, some people have complained that it isn't good blah blah blah. From my own experience, it's fine for me. Gorilla glass is not immune to scratches either. Just marketed better I guess.

I just ordered a GN from Amazon for Verizon and should have it next Tuesday. I am coming from the Epic 4G Touch (SGS2) from Sprint which is using the same processor at AT&T's. I am also curious if anyone has made the jump from this phone and how there experience has been.
I am looking forward to the GN and just hope it does not disappoint. Really looking forward to running ICS as well. Was never really that excited to run a stock Android device until now...

I never had the SGSII but I would assume the GN would just be like a sidegrade for you. I wouldn't get the GN if I already had a SGSII. Other than that the Galaxy Nexus is the best phone that I've ever had, coming from the Nexus One

That's the same thing I said when coming from Vibrant to Nexus S. I don't regret getting the NS either and you GS2 switchers most likely wouldn't either.

I'm in the exact same boat as the OP, sort of. I'm with Sprint and I've got the Epic 4G touch (SGSII with a stupid name). Anyway, my line is due for an upgrade in April (JOY) and I'm debating whether I should get the nexus. I've always been curious and kinda wanted a pure google phone. I love modding, flashing custom roms, tweaking, theming, etc. There is a VERY experimental CM9 rom available for my device but its not a daily driver. I flashed it though, just to check it out and I have fallen in love with ics, plain.
I guess my main question is: Considering the Verizon is also CDMA, will the custom roms and rooting methods available for the Verizon version work on the Sprint version? If not, I'd imagine there would still be plenty of development for the Sprint version, right?
To be honest, there are some nice roms for the Epic 4G touch but overall, I've owned other devices where the development seemed much stronger. I want a device that a LOT of developers will work on.
Any opinions, suggestions, advice? Also, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I've also got my eye on the possibility of Sprint getting the Galaxy Note.

Verizon CDMA will not work for Sprint. Only Verizon. Sprint is getting their own version of the Galaxy Nexus but it's unknown when it will be getting it officially but it will probably be soon.
Another thing to add, when purchasing Galaxy Nexus.. make sure you get it from a reputable seller that is willing to fulfill the warranty because you are not covered by Samsung (at least the GSM version).

I AM talking about the one sprint's getting. I'm not gonna try to buy a Verizon one and connect it on sprint. That would never work. My question is: do u think the custom roms developed for the Verizon version will work on the sprint version since they're both cdma?

Will have to wait for the Sprint version to come out to answer you on that. The rooting method will definitely be the same
1. Get Fastboot drivers
2. fastboot oem unlock

latest version of ICS (4.04) is awsome
I was already happy I got GN, but the latest version is great - battery life is substantial. Get it

I don't see why not. It's a Nexus device, and many ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus are cross-compatible (not in the same package.... but both GSM & LTE)
at most, the radio/basebands will be different.
Kernel flashable zips are cross compatible.

I'm on the same boat, trying to figure out if I should switch to sprint when the GN comes out (better plan purposes) but hoping the sprint version will get as much love from the developers as the Verizon version.
Just wondering ....... what kind of plan do ya have on Verizon?

My 32GB iPhone 4S has not been used as much since getting my Galaxy Nexus. I really like my HTC Rezound but I think I may like my Nexus more. None of my HTC Rezound's would have the mobile hotspot work for over ten minutes before dropping the data connection. My GN has not dropped its data connection while using the mobile hotspot yet. (Being that I'm allowed unlimited data on my SMARTPHONE I pay to connect to other devices)

You won't be disappointed at all also I read a couple weeks ago (and correct me if I'm wrong ) the the omap 4460 has the same performance as the current exynos processors , only the omap isn't as power efficient.

I just switched from the GS2 Exynos to the gsm nexus three days ago, and believe it's worth it. The user experience is a whole different and ICS is just so good. And the screen resolution is awesome, reading on my phone has never been such a pleasure. Just get it and see for yourself

Just curious why a lot of people seem to prefer these devices over devices like Motorola Razr, etc? Is because these devices are updated more frequently than most? I've read that somewhere, but don't remember where. Thanks.

Nexus devices are bloat free (no motoblur, touchwiz, sense skins on top - just pure Android)
They (like you said) are the first to get updates to new Android releases
They are much simpler to unlock/root/theme/modify etc than others
The development of roms, kernels mods etc is the largest of any other Android phone probably and is always evolving
Pretty much why I chose a Nexus - I knew I would be able to get pretty comprehensive help with any aspect of it on these and other forums

Thanks for your response; it's much appreciated. Since I've only ever used Moto Android devices, I'm not very familiar with the offerings by Nexus. Does Samsung actually make the Nexus, but Google owns Nexus?

Google owns the Nexus brand and uses it to showcase their latest software offerings as well as to set a general trend of direction it envisions for Android as a whole - It contracts out the actual hardware manufacture to it's partners like HTC (Nexus One), Samsung (Nexus S & GNex) and ASUS (Nexus 7 tablet) etc.

No not any Nexus device. The GSM Nexus that you can buy from Google directly gets updates before any other device. The carrier locked (CDMA) Verizon and Sprint Nexi got the latest updates 2-3 months after the GSM model did, still they are ahead of most phones for updates.

Updated frequently, for longer, with great stock software.
If you're into rooting, its trivially easy.
If you're into ROMs, it'll be one of (if not the) best supported device for a long time to come.

Honestly, I was a huge HTC fanatic up until I first played with the Gnex. After an hour of playing with my new Gnex I was hooked, after a week of tweaking it I decided I will not own any other device but a Nexus branded one from this point on. I hated samsung because of how plastic and toylike their phones seemed to be but after owning my Gnex I changed my mind. My last phone (Inc2) had scratches on the screen within a week and dust under the screen within a month. I'm going on 3 months with my Gnex and keep it naked in the same pocked as my car keys sometimes with not a single tiny cosmetic ding.
Anyway, got a little off the subject, honestly the only way I will ever hesitate in the future from buying a nexus device is if crappy motorola is making it. I still love HTC and I definitely have a newfound love for Samsung after owning my Gnex and playing with the Note 2 and the GS3.
Bottomline, once you own a google flagship phone nothing else really compares.

[VZW]getting tired of my gnex...what next?

As we all know the Gnex has been the greatest Verizon phone of the last few years. Not the least cause of the great developers who maintain it. I have not seen such great support since the droid incredible days...race condition anyone? However I have been sitting on my upgrade since July and I just need something new. 1 hour of screen on time just doesn't cut it anymore.
Let's just assume I am stuck with Verizon. What is everyone else doing? I am torn between the g2's battery life and the note 3s community life. I have been reading about the notes poor signal(hello Verizon gnex) and the G2 poor support and I am completely undecided. What is everyone else's game plan?
I plan on putting 4.4 on it anyways with or without cellular data.

I would wait for Nexus 5. Pure stock android beats everything customized on the market right now.

nexus 5 will prolly not be a verizon phone, so he cant rely on that.

If you want the most future proof device right now, the G2 and the Note 3 are where it's at. I think the Note is too large for every day use (I like to be able to use my phone one-handed). While not a spec powerhouse on paper, the Moto X looks like an awesome device. The same size screen as the Gnex, but with a smaller body. That's just awesome. If I was in the market for a phone right now, I'd seriously look at this device.

I would be surprised if the next nexus is released on either sprint or verizon. Not saying it can't happen, but with Verizon's track record lately of locking down bootloaders, a Nexus doesn't fit in with their plans.

While the Nexus 5 probably won't hit Verizon, there still could be a chance. The latest N7 has Verizon support. I think the N5 was reported to possibly support it too. Not sure.
However the N5 is based off the LG G2, which has had a pretty widespread release on all carriers. I don't plan on upgrading until Decemberish but hopefully by then, the N5 is out and we can see how easy rom development goes back and forth between the 2 devices.
I'd love another Nexus device on Verizon but I'm not giving my hopes up.

The Nexus 7 supports Verizon LTE. If it had a CDMA radio, things would be looking more likely. I don't think we'll be seeing a Verizon Nexus anytime soon.

All rumors point to Verizon being the only major US carrier not getting the N5, believe me, if in was rumored to find its way this thread wouldn't even be here. The Verizon note 3 doesn't come out till 10/10 anyways so I have at least then to see if any Google announcements are made.
I am really curious where most other Verizon gnexers will end up now that this phones 2 year birthday is coming up. And to hear thoughts as I am totally undecided.

I can tell you this verizon user went to prepaid (StraightTalk), and I love it. Wife and I save $60/mo, and still get LTE. Now I don't need to worry about "will my carrier get *x* phone?" While this option doesn't work for everyone, it's at least something to consider.

Why are so many people starting these threads before the Nexus 5 comes out? I'm still hanging onto this article here:

I would love to go to StraightTalk. In fact my wife (iPhone 4S) and father (Nexus 4) and a few others have all switched and have no complaints. The reason I am tied to Verizon is this is a work phone purchased and paid for by my company. They use Verizon thus I use Verizon. For a while I carried 2 phones but I use Google Voice and wanted to save some cash.
I'm not upgrading my GN until December probably. This will give me time to follow the N5 release and the G2 development. I broke out of the Nexus line for the LG G2x and I hated every minute of it. The LG G2 looks like a super sweet phone but so did the G2x at the time. LG SUCKS at updating their equipment so without a solid dev community, I would be very hard pressed to pick up another one. I would rather go with a Galaxy S4 or Note 2/3 or just stick it out on my GN.
The Nexus 4 was based off the LG Optimus G (?) but after a year, I recently visited the Optimus forums and found their dev was very lacking. Many of the people said the dev from the N4<>LG Optimus wasn't too complicated, but it never had a following.
I don't want to fall into a phone that is outdated out of the box. I don't need official support from LG, but need a good official AOKP support to be happy for a while.
Unfortunately the linked article above shows FCC filings for a new LG-VS980 they claim to be a rumored VZW N5, but if you google LG-VS980, you'll find that it's the Verizon G2 model number:

I am also glad they fixed the ear piece from the LG G2x and the Optimus where there was a thin metal line at the top that would cut into your ear when in use. The new G2 reminds me of a Samsung, which is good. I would probably grab a white one. Never had a white phone before.
Update:
Good to know that ONLY the VZW version of the LG G2 has Qi Charging. I've invested in some Qi Chargers for my new N7 and love it. My next phone will absolutely have this feature. So it is good to know that even if I end up with a G2, I will be covered.
I also heard that the Verizon G2 also has unlocked GSM/LTE bands that work with AT&T and StraightTalk. This would be super cool because I travel. The military outposts we do typically will have 1 cell carrier and it is usually not Verizon. Good to know I can pickup a cheap prepaid sim to use temporarily.

This is the kind of dialog and thoughts is like to hear. I have the same fears about the G2. I always told myself id at least be happy if it got cyanogen or something but I still have serious doubts about it.
And what gets me about the note 3 is the rumored poor radio(being gnex owners we all know how annoying that is) and the fact that it is region locked with the sim. Maybe that will be changed with root/unlock but who knows.
