[Q] ROM Installation Questions - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Hi ! I updated my Xperia S to Jelly Bean (6.2.B.0.200),it has a lot of bugs so I am thinking to put Trinity Vengeance RaptorXL ROM without unlocking bootloader. To do this i must go root and I can't on .200 so if flash .211 and root via DooMLoRD rooting method, can i flash this rom because in the instructions it says:

WOW! I believe that you can downgrade via flashtool and then root. Downgrading doesn't hurt the phone or it's bootloader. At least that's what happened to the old xperia's.

I don't want to downgrade because I will lost my apps and I can't do backup with Titanium!

Any other idea?

flashtool 4.0.2.A.0.62 root

Can the new flashtools root 4.0.2.A.0.62 for arcs with locked bootloaders? Already upgraded once to find out i couldn't root it. Has anyone done this successfully with a locked bootloader as I don;t fancy experimenting again.
yes mate flash the old kernel from the .58 or .42 or .283 FW by excluding baseband & system in flashtool b4 flashing after that root as normal with zergRush..

Thats what i did last time i experimented and it didnt work. i installed 62 then flashed the 42 kernel with flashtool. But zerg wouldnt root it. But i flashed the kernel only. in one of the 62 threads there were links to getting it rooted with locked bootloaders. This went to a guide with nothing about locked bootloaders in it, only unlocked.
somewhere here in the forums is a thread about CWM for locked bootloaders, with that you CANNOT flash custom kernels, but old kernels in zip format, hang on i'll get you the zip + the link for the locked BL CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390771 this is the link for CWM: follow these instructions for the arc : 1.Run install-cwm?.cmd
install-cwm1.cmd for Xperia Arc / Neo / PLAY
2.Enable USB Debugging on device
3.Connect your device using usb data cable
4.Follow on screen instruction
and here's the kernel it's the .283 kernel
it wasn't custom, it was the stock kernel from .42 flashed to .62 and zerg refused to root it. Although apparently this worked on previous versions as i tried flashing the .42 kernel over onto .62 as a tip from one of the other members on here. but I couldn't get it rooted in the end and gave up and went back to .58.
flash that kernel via CWM
so if done with cwm mod it should work then? Whats the difference flashing the kernel with cwm as opposed to flashtool? Would have thought it be the same.
dont know the difference, but this one worked for me
cheers ill give it a go.
no problem feel free to contact me via PM if you still have problems

I have the exact same problem as you. Did you manage to accomplish anything? If yes would it be easy for you to explain to me the exact steps? If not is it possible to give me the address or send me the .58 firmware for arcs (the ftf file). I wasn't able to find it somewhere. Thanks!
upgraded to .62 then tried to install cwm but it wouldn't let me as the phone needs root permission to be able to install it. So how did you deal with this? I also flashed the .283 kernel with flash tools after updating to .62 and zerg again failed to root the device.

Ok, I'll give it a try.
Before I go back to .58, is there any rumour if Flashtool is going to support rooting on .62 firmware soon?

Nope... the zergRush exploit has been patched on .62 fw and there wont be another exploit on Gingerbread, since we're going to ICS.
is there anyway to root 62 without unlocking our bootloaders or is it nay to impossible?
So far I wasn't able to find a way, so I think I'll just go back to .58 or .42 and root, waiting for the official ICS.

Unlock with normal method or testpoint (drm data keept)
Get root/cwm
Find your rom and fitting kernel
Flash.
If you just go first to general selection theres a lot fully made threads about unlocking and getting CWM. (on top, the pinned ones)
Then go to dev. selection so find your rom and follow the guide to flash

Just flash a kernel & you can use CWM to flash a rom

[Q] How to back up app data & settings without root and Ultimate Backup Tool?

Hi, everyone. I can't seem to find the solution for my prob, so I've to ask for ur knowledge on this.
Problem:
I'm using Xperia Arc with latest stock firmware without root. And I want to back up my app data & settings before resetting or flashing it.
Attempt:
I've tried Ultimate Backup Tool, but to no avail, just as mentioned in the Ultimate Backup Tool thread that there are known problem with Xperia Arc as one of the Sony 2011 devices.
I've looked through all the rooting methods for Xperia Arc, and I can't seem to find or perform a working root on the phone without flashing it. Naturally, Titanium Backup can't work as well.
Question:
So, what options do I have to back up the app data & settings now? And I'm looking that whether will a flash necessarily wipe the data on ur phone? Can I retain the data even after flashing the phone?
Really appreciate for ur help. Thx~ =)

You can't, it's not possible to access and backup app data while your phone is not rooted. Are you on GB or ICS?
BTW, you don't have to flash your phone to root unless you have to downgrade. In the instance for ICS .587, I only need to flash the kernel of .562, root it via adb, then flash back the .587 kernel. This should not wipe your data.

Thx a lot for ur reply. I'm on ICS .587 too. I was just afraid that flashing would wipe the data. And now this is clear.
Seems like this is the only option that I have, right? Btw, won't flashing it back to the latest firmware lose the root? Bcuz I used to have root, but I lost it when I updated my phone through official update methods. Or is that why I lost root?

You lose root from both flashing stock firmware and updating through official updating methods.... at least for locked boot loaders

Yes, flashing will lose your root, so does updating it via the official method. Flashing the entire ROM would wipe the data, but flashing the kernel does not.

You can't root the latest firmware so you have to downgrade to root. You then upgrade by flashing the latest firmware's kernel which upgrades the firmware to the latest version and also keeps root status.
As for unlocked bootloaders, I can't comment because I have no experience with them

Yeah, when you unlock bootloader, you also remove DRM keys that connect to Sony servers. So Track ID, Playnow and other Sony services won't work anymore. You also cannot use OTA updates as it will brick your phone.

Hmm~ I'm aware of that. But from first impression, it seems like they're not that important, since apps like Playnow are not useful. The only one that I use is TrackID, which I saw Sony published it on Play Store for public download. Sounds like it's fine to lose the DRM key too. Lol.
Arc S kernel and Arc kernel is different. Don't flash or it may cause problems.

[6.2.b.0.211]Need help after fail trying to root Xperia S

Hi, today I tried to update my Xperia S to 6.2.b.0.211 using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302631
But I got a brick which put my phone on a bootloop like the sony logo wouldn't disappear. So I used PC Companion to repair it and now I'm at 6.2.b.0.200 without root.
What I'm asking: Is there any way to root/flash a pre-rooted rom or whatever to have my phone rooted?
Thanks in advance.

Hello guys, u dont need pre-rooted rom or use the old .200 rom anymore
just get the .211 stock rom and u can root it!!
Seems the .211 rom is not available in many country, including Hong Kong (where i'm from)
u can just flash the .211 rom with the ftf file with flash tool in your XS
u may download it here : http://goo.im/devs/DooMLoRD/xperia_s/LT26i_6.2.B.0.211.ftf

i believes most languages are here too
but there's only xperia international keyboard by default

It might be a .200 bug. Why don't you try to upgrade to .211?? It may fix that problem...
In PC Companion is not yet . So any other way to do it, I Don't know.
Same problem
I have the same problem, I used to root using Bin4ry's method, but that no longer works, and I can't upgrade to .211 as it's not available in the UK.
This ROM .200 is full of bugs, but for me the most annoying is that the 2G is not working well when connecting to the internet.
I'm waiting for the official .211 if I cannot root it.

It might be a .200 bug. Why don't you try to upgrade to .211?? It may fix that problem...

Hello ....
I had the same problem, mine was also *200 built Jelly Bean, I tried every exploit to root I could, spent all day messing with it, I did not succeed, I couldn't even get into fastboot or any method to enable me to flash this pre rooted ROM as it's zip format not ftf.
I eventually managed to soft brick my Xperia S, then I down graded to ICS, and rooted that very easy indeed, so I'm staying on ICS for the time being, didn't notice any vast improvements with Jelly Bean update anyway, and the phone works great now, I know with the version how to flash if I want too.
Hope this helps? .............................

Well, if there is someone who rooted their SONY XPERIA S with JB ROM .200 please let me know, and how you did it, without downloading some heavy MB tools. Thanks. I have locked bootloader but it can be unlocked.

I suggest you to first unlock your bootloader via the easy tool described at here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560613
then flash the Doomkernel with the flashtool booting at fastboot mode. Before doing that never forget to install the necessary drivers.
The kernel is preloaded with custom recovery CWM and TWRP. While booting when you see doom logo pressing at 'vol +' you'll get CWM and pressing at camera button you'll get TWRP.
And flash the su and busybox package via recovery (CWM or TWRP)
for flashtool http://androxyde.github.io/
for kernel and su & busybox package: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305591
& then enjoy Rooted jelly bean
ALL THE BEST !
I'll try. 'hope it works.
SONY XPERIA S
Nope. Not working. It's best to leave the phone as it is.

Well I managed to unlock my bootloader. Now i'm stuck on how to root it. any ideas?
First of all check your bootloader status.
*#*#7278423#*#* and then service info>configuration. If your bootloader is unlocked, it says 'bootloader unlocked = yes
And be sure that after installing the drivers you successfully connected the phone at fastboot mode. Long press volume + while connecting usb cable to PC. Flashing tool must detect your device.
After unlocking your bootloader rooting will never be problem.
And do it properly, this method definately works but you must be sure your bootloader is unlockable and unlocked also.
