[Q] So, did your ZL first arrive sealed? - Sony Xperia ZL

I recently bought a C6503 from a German eBay seller, but it wasn't sealed in any way. More importantly, the phone had clearly been removed at least once from the plastic bag it came in, because there was a dent from the camera on the other side. It had been reinserted the other way around, then sent to me. I returned the phone.
I've now imported another C6503 from phonehouse.de and it too has arrived unsealed - neither the box nor the phone arrived sealed in any way. It mostly looks like it's been untouched. Some unboxing videos on YouTube show sealed versions, others not.
Which was yours? The most important reason for it to be sealed, to me, is because I want to condition the battery before turning the phone on, and if someone has used it before me then there's a chance I won't be able to. Plus, I like new stuff
Was your box sealed? Was the phone sealed in the plastic bag when in the box?

I bought my ZL at Amazon.de and it was not sealed. But I am sure that device was unused. The plastic protector was originally on the phone, also USB cable and earphones were not touched.
I know sometimes the box must be opened to insert local guarantee sheet, manuals, etc. in the box. Sometimes also some local changes are made on the device.
I don't have any troubles with my phone and I am really surprised when I see so many posts where users state their problems. Camera is great, battery life is excellent, scrolling is smooth, really no problems with my ZL, although the package was not sealed.

I got mine from Bell Canada and was sealed with a sony sticker

Mine was sealed, purchased from Newegg.

Interesting.. so far, all the North American phones have been sealed, but those from Europe (although mine's manufactured in China) were not.

Okay, fair enough. Meanwhile, slightly worrying for me is that when I 'first' turned the phone on today, it booted straight away in German and didn't ask me to select a language or any other setup. It all looked new, but this suspects me to think someone else has turned it on before me. I don't know if there's a way I can check, but I was pretty disappointed by this.
I'm wondering however if it's a German retail thing, because this is the second order I've had from Germany (from different suppliers) and both were completely unsealed. Perhaps there's a law that requires them to check it boots up before shipping..?

The language is determined by the customization, different regions have different customizations. Mine came with English (UK) pre-selected.

Bought mine from eBay (USA) and the box was sealed with a Sony sticker. Model C6503.

My ZL was bought at Amazon.de as I told you in my previous post and the box was not sealed, but as I remembered the first thing when I turned the phone on was selecting the language and setup guide ...
In general, I'm also wondering what happens with those products that had been sold through internet sales and later returned by customers and of course already used? Is there any rule that buyer must get completely new device ?

Thank you for this. The phone is probably fine, but for the time being there is doubt in my mind.
I don't suppose anyone knows if there's a system menu I can access that will tell me how many times the phone has been booted? So far, I have only turned it on once, so if that number is anything more than one and can be shown on the system, I will have my answer.
I'd love to keep it, and not have the hassle of returning it, but it's such a lot of money and I want to love my handset 100%, and not have any doubt. It does seem strange that it didn't ask me for the setup guide, and the phone was also already set to vibrate which I thought was strange. Also, the Developer Options were already exposed, but I was of the belief that these need to be enabled by pressing the version number seven times.
The only thing is that I haven't yet put a SIM card in it, so I don't know if that means the phone wouldn't go straight to Setup.

Bought it straight from Sony Shop. That shop also sells other Sony products. Sealed.

I noticed the Sony Mobile shops here sell unsealed phones. Happen with my former Xperia S. Bought it there unsealed.

Bought a white one from Amazon.de and whilst the box was sealed the unit itself was defective - the metal around the lens was chipped and the glass side near the camera button was cracked. I sent it back yesterday and will get a refund. When I booted it up, it went straight into the German menu without asking me to choose language.
Anyway, I ordered another ZL (this time black) as I saw a cracking deal on Amazon.it who were charging just €310! Price now back up to €499.

If a "new" phone doesn't boot into
setup (language choice) then it is not new! And, obviously, if it's broken in the box and the box is undamaged it's not new! Law is strict, if it is sold as new in product description it should be in factory condition ie. As left factory after fabrication...sealed and not having been switched on!

Exactly my thoughts, which is why I was surprised, since it was ordered direct from Amazon.de and I've never had any 'returns' passed off as a new phone before from them. Anyway, it went straight back as it was clear that either it was already used or someone at the Sony factory didn't do their job properly in passing appropriate QA tests.

Good luck!! It'll be worth waiting for, but I'd be wary of the 4.2.2 update! Lots having troubles with it in other threads. I have had nothing but grief on many devices ! Out of the box on 4.1.2 easily the best android phone I have ever owned (there have been many ) and I am not going to spoil it with 4.2.2

[HELP] Slider/LCD Flex

Mine's broken, and SE service centers here in my country are poor, they even disrespect their customers. Besides, replacement parts aren't available yet because the PLAY was only released a month ago here.
Please, can anyone show me a TRUSTED website that sells OEM items like this one? AND THAT SHIPS TO MY COUNTRY? (Philippines)
I need it urgently, I'm already moving. Please???
http://www.gultek.eu/mobile-phone-spare-parts/flex-ribbon/sony-ericsson/play-slider-flex.html
that should be okay
Yes I saw that already last night. But thanks though. One last question, is that GENUINE? OEM? I passed through that website last night because it looks suspicious... could be fake rip-offs... I know gultek has good rep, but any confirmation that those are OEM? Do they get their supplies from official Sony Ericsson parts suppliers? I don't want fake parts living inside my phone!

I feel sorry for you man, cant agree with you more on this problem.
Until such time this model widely spreads in our country thats the time service centers will have a decent "service" for it.
Also Pinoy here.
I believe only a handful of people have xperia play right now.
Why don't you try to email Sony Ericsson themselves and see if they can help you somehow? Always worth a shot.
By the way. How did you manage to break it?

I found a site from Sweden where I live that has the exact same one as you linked to. It is titled "Play flex slider original". So it should be original. Can't guarantee anything though.

@dannejanne
i'm sure they can't help me, besides, my phone was bought in HK, there's no way i'm going back there..
so I let someone (a friend) who's currently in the UK buy 3 pieces of the item from gultek (since they don't ship to my country) then she'll send it to me via xpress mail.. i'll post the results here once it's installed..

mostly only from the UK at the moment, and they don't ship to our country..
so i even bundled my flex with a dock!
Cool. Pinoy here. The girl in sm north se(not memoxpress) is okay. But i feel terrible hearing that some parts of xplay arent available here in ph. I should better be careful in handling my xplay. well they didn't actually make a diagnosis of my phone, just a quick guess of the technicians saying it's the main flex that connects UP and DOWN after testing my phone with a software.
so the problem is that, sometimes the screen is on, sometimes it's off even though the phone is actually on. it almost always turns on only when the pad is open, and when I close the pad the screen/display disappears again, and when i open it again it won't come back. so is it really the main flex? I remember the night before this problem started, I kept sliding the pad in and out out of alcohol-drinking trips
god i should not bring my xperia play when drinking with friends!!!
PS: i can be sure that the touchscreen and the LCD itself are working because whenever the screen shows up, the touchscreen is still responsive and the LCD has no weird artifacts or pixelations, and like i said the display disappears when opening/closing the pad, so I'm quite 95% sure it's the main ribbon that's causing the frackin problem...
what do you guys think? is it really the main flex that connects UP and DOWN?
i miss my phone so much..
i'm on a stupid nokia phone right now..
the replacement parts haven't arrived yet, I'm freakin irritated! grrrr!!!!
anyway, are those parts from GUltek GENUINE? AS IN OEM????

[Q] Expansys Handset from Mexico?

Hello all. I don't post very often, if at all, but I had a question and was wondering if those who received their handset recently could answer. I ordered a Galaxy Nexus from Expansys (USA Store), and I received it today. I opened it up and was expecting the handset box to have that security sticker that I've seen other unboxings on YouTube to have. It didn't. I was also surprised that I have Spanish / Mexican writing in addition to English on the outside of my box. I opened my box and instead of the UK plug, I was given a Mexican (?) plug. I'm not sure, the plug said "ME" on the side. I also received warranty books in English and Spanish. Sorry, I'm not sure how to speak Spanish or Mexican so I may be mixing it up. I tried searching these forums, but I haven't seen a thread on this yet.
So, I know there are some people that received their handsets today from Expansys, and I was wondering if they received the same thing?
Sorry, if this has been covered before, but I'm just curious. Thanks.
I was about to make a post about the same thing.
My Nexus also came without a security seal, US charger, and English/Spanish manuals. Also, on the inside of my phone it does not say Made in Korea. Instead it says Korean Product.
But I did not order from Expansys.
Thanks for your response, aeox. I'm thankful I wasn't the only one that received a handset from someplace else. I'm hoping that everything else internally is the same, i.e. same sourced parts. I have flashbacks to when I was on Blackberry and people compared country of manufacture to determine problems. Lol.
I'm naive about electricity also. Would someone be able to tell me if it's safe to use the "ME" plug in US sockets? Could I use my SGSII plug to charge the Nexus? Just want to be sure and not fry my phone or my house.
Thanks again, and sorry for all the questions.
I'm kind of worried too. Since none of the labels on the box or phone itself have all "regular" labels that is seen in every video out there. Especially the sticker inside the back of the phone.
Korean Product vs. Made in Korea by Samsung.
Does any one else have different accessories or packaging?

I order from Negri, seems like it came from spain or something...
Any chance of some pictures guys?
That thread got kind of long full of posts from all over the place. I probably missed it.
I'll try to post some pictures tonight when I get home.
aeox: Yeah, mine says "PRODUCTO COREANO / KOREAN PRODUCT"
Regarding doubts of some batches are made in Korea or not; they are all made in Korea. Even though the phone says "Producto Coreano/Product of Korea", the bottom side of the white box has a lable that says "Phone: Made in Korea, Imported Accessories individually marked" So theres no doubt the phone is manufactured in Korea and the accessories in China as labled.
I just got mine FRESH. I did not purchase it at an online retailer like negri or expansis but from a wholesale company that I have connections with. They seem to have the same batch as many of you mentioned; no security stickers and spanish and english on packaging and documentation. I saw the entire lot that they have and its the same thing. Theyre a reputable company, they wouldnt mickymouse with such a high end device, as anyone will certainly expect folks like us will put anything and everything about it under a microscope.
Sounds a little bit more reassuring. But I personally still would rather have a made in Korea by Samsung sticker with the FCC logo instead of the simple cheap looking one I have.

I completely understand but, know that this isnt a standard US/CA handset where you get a nice FCC seal etc. These phones were meant for a different region with different standards. Also, my hypothesis is that we dont get a samsung seal of quality because this isnt a fully Samsung developed developed device. This is a joint effort lead by Google and Samsung happens to be the lead manufacturer. If it was a pure Samsung device, i trust samsung would have put in their own in-house Exynos SoC instead of Texas Instrument OMAP right?
I dont know what the standards for Mexico mobile devices are either (or if these handsets were even meant for mexico in the first place), but DAMN this phone looks sexy as fcuk. I love it. And you should too, dont let a little packaging issue take away the fact that you have the next badass Google Nexus device.

Getting it in the UK

Hi all,
From all that I have seen it doesn't look like the ZL will be officially available in the UK. As such the options for buying a C6503 model are:
Import from Europe
It's quite expensive at the moment, and the retailer which should have no problems shipping abroad (Amazon) had the highest price of them all last time I checked. I can definitely see this working fine, with the German version having en_GB locale support and playing nicely with the operators.
Import from Asia (ie HK)
From Expansys (http://www.expansys.com.hk/sony-xperia-zl-lte-c6503-unlocked-16gb-black-247249) the total works out cheaper by about £60, with the shipping not being much slower. The other positives are that in HK they use the same power plugs as in the UK (no need to mess with power adaptors), and en_GB would definitely come preloaded as a locale. The only worry is that the manufacturer model quoted is 'AP_C6503_BLK', where the 'AP' stands for the Asia-Pacific version. I'm wondering whether this could have any implications on the hardware and software. I suppose as software goes it should always be possible to reflash it to a German firmware, but I can't help but think that something could be different.
Also found this: http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=21943
Despite coming up on Google Shopping with good reviews, I found other review websites which seemed to suggest the opposite. They also claimed to have had it in stock two or three weeks ago (I've been following this page for a while), when it wasn't even released in Europe. Both of these make me think that this website is a bit dodgy, and make me wonder where the device originally comes from (HK, Germany, Russia?).
I'm seriously inclining towards the second option, but I'm wondering whether anyone around here has previous experience or some information that might be able to help make the best choice.
Thanks.
Amazon Germany and Amazon Italy now have it for circa €560.
Nooo!! do not buy from simply electronics! I had an awful experience and a quick Google will give you the same feedback.
I am in the UK. Love the phone.

So presumably the device you have is an Asia-Pacific version. Did you notice any differences or oddities when it came to the software/hardware?

Another 3 uk user here, got my 6503 for ~£500 after shipping and tax from the states seller: never-msrp.
Even works on 3's secret LTE
Only issue is the US AC adapter.
I am gonna buy a white 6503 version from the German site; Cyberport.de
They can send it to several countries and the prices for that aren't that high.
The phone itself will cost you €550,00 and the shipping to the Netherlands (where I live) are only €13,00.
They've got the black version in stock, and the white version (that I want) is gonna be there in several days.
If you want to check out other stores in Germany:
Geizhals.de: black Sony Xperia ZL
Geizhals.de: white Sony Xperia ZL
Geizhals.de: red Sony Xperia ZL
Well, I ended up buying it from Amazon.de, which worked out to pretty much £500 after shipping and currency conversion. While Expansys.com.hk would have been cheaper, I felt that the European warranty was worth the additional price.
The funny thing is that I ordered yesterday and I should get it tomorrow. Ordering a device which isn't available in the UK, from Amazon.de, and guess what? The device was in the Milton Keynes distribution centre! Seems almost ridiculous, really.
Let us know how you get on.

Yeah it will be white for me, only little thing is that the notification led is better to see on the black one I think...
But I don't like the shiny sides of the black one, and when I first saw the white version I fell in love, so that's why.
And I think the notificationbar and bar with the buttons will look better on the white, on the black ZL it looks so greyish.
I got mine today, and man... it sure looks good and feels nice. It feels a bit heavy, compared to my S3, but I'll get used to that. The screen also looks good when looking at it directly, but gets worse as soon as the viewing angle increases. Although I suppose this is a good thing, as other people trying to look at my device shouldn't see as much as on my S3! The bezel on the side looks a bit bigger than on the pictures, but it's not a big deal. Overall when looking at video or pictures fullscreen it looks stunning, since there is so little bezel.
Now, since I'm a power user, I'm wondering whether I want to unlock the bootloader or just root. I actually don't mind Sony's customisations that much (barring Chrome instead of the stock browser, and the standard Gallery app), however if CM becomes stable enough I might put it on. Perhaps just the root for locked bootloaders will be good enough for now.
Nice to know some others in the uk have one. It's an exclusive club!)
Great phone so far for me. No regrets and no disappointment. I feel the same about the viewing angles. I'm stock all the way for once so will enjoy the factory experience.
I'm trialing the battery saving features at the moment. So far today I have had some good results. I'm not one for these features normally but I thought a the phone has had them I would give it a go.

First time user

So my Robin finally came from Amazon yesterday. After hours of waiting and finding out it was at someone else's apartment (long story short). Anyways after I unboxed the phone and the top of the device was bent backwards, which I didn't really have a problem with because I didn't want to ship it back and wait for a new one. After taking hours to charge up and install every update, I found out that the front camera didn't even work, nothing but static like an old school TV. Sent it back and currently waiting on a new one. Did anyone else have these issues when they first got theirs? I understand and know that it's an old device but I can't resist the look of it lol.
Well are you certain you bought a new device and not a used one? Nextbit(now acquired by Razer) stopped selling this device 6-8months back. They pulled out all from all the official channels so the only ones you can buy are from stock saved by retailers or third party sellers.
This surely is a case of old stock stashed somewhere which probably got damaged in storage or handling.

Some resellers bought up remaining stock from retailers in bulk to flip for a profit. Often these transactions are "all sales final" because the retailers take a loss and just want the product gone. Maybe some resellers got stuck with a few broken units and are shadily trying to sell as new rather than "broken for parts only." I'd hope not, but it's possible.

Hey folks. I just recently switched from oneplus to samsung. Haven't used a samsung device since the galaxy s5 with the bootloader unlock exploit.
Used LG for a while, then tried out the oneplus 8pro which is now at the repair center. I picked up what was advertised as an open box galaxy s20 + 5g (986u1) device.
After I powered it on, and set it up, I went to activate developer options and found that they were already on. Does that sound right that dev options would already be turned on if it was a new unused device?
Thanks.
Turn them off for your answer...
Yeah, I thought it sounded like a silly question.... Deserves a silly answer.

Samsung QC might have been playing with it and forgot to turn it off. Still it's disconcerting for a number of reasons.

Appreciate that. I found it interesting, and bit concerning that a brand new device would have developer settings activated. I purchased from an ebay seller. Based on their high approval scores, I felt pretty safe. I'll probably question them about it. Thankfully, everything on the phone seems to be working well. Peace.

You could reflash it to make sure there's no possibility of a rootkit. Probably just a goofball tech...

From what you've shared it sounds like you're in the clear. "Open Box" offerings always give me pause since sellers rarely post why the item was unsealed. At times sellers declare they only opened the item for testing but unless the offer is at a considerable discount below a comparable new, sealed unit and listed by a reputable seller with a fair return policy I'd avoid it.
I recently purchased a Dell XPS laptop on ebay from a dealer specializing in refurbished units. The listing reflected the item as "new". Before confirming the order I reached out and asked is the laptop factually new, has it ever been used? The seller replied "It's new to us"? WTF does that mean? lol!
