[Q] Internal memory question - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I have flashed a couple of different ROMs some debloated TW some full featured TW and some without TW and the internal memory always stays at 9.72 available even without all the bloat. My question is is there a way to change that can I format or re partition the internal storage without screwing everything up royally???

Short answer: No. Too risky.
A little more information, mostly speculation. Repartitioning your device's internal memory could very easily leave you with a brick. While it may be possible, the risks are greater than any benefit.
This may be totally off-base, but I'd guess that you'd probably need a custom bootloader redesigned with the proper starting and ending addresses for the new partitions, especially if you wanted to resize any partitions that affect the way the phone starts up (boot and system, I'd imagine).
edit: Does anyone think it may be possible to repurpose some of the unused space on the system partition of some ROMs as extended media storage through the use of symlinks? Not sure I'm saying exactly what I mean, and I might be completely misunderstanding how symlinks work, but here's my thought:
e.g. Create a folder in /system/extended_media_storage. Create a symlink on data/media/ pointing to /system/extended_media_storage.

I figured that would be the case, ill just stick to using folder mount to use up my SD card when needed.
Thanks

An interesting idea, but a quick attempt didn't work. Easier to just get a big MicroSD and symlink your media folders to that.

Thanks for trying it out and letting me know. I doubted it would actually work, but figured I might throw the idea out there just in case.

linux experience
my experience with Linux suggests that a simple repartition resize would suffice, if possible.
In Linux there are nice programs like GParted that can change, create, modify partitions Live, It is risky but I've never lost data.
Those were windows machines running Linux distros though. Android is a form of Linux but I'm not sure what you can do partition wise.
Not quite that far in my quest of knowledge and understanding.
The thing is, your partitions are set and don't change, even when you flash, so basically that space is pre-allocated by the factory.
even when you flash, you aren't flashing the partition structure, just the data inside it (those memory addresses), IF after you flashed with the No Bloatware Flash theoretically you should be able to resize that particular partition and also resize the device storage partition in sequence to a bigger size. All that should be possible without affecting the important system partitions etc. Even if you did **** it up, the system and recovery partitions are hidden and you should be able to do a full rewrite recovery with some software and a usb cord, theoretically. You would need to be accurate, not just precise when you resize the partitions. As a matter of fact if you did do it, you should resize according to actual drive blocks and not bytes.
Just my 2 cents, Ayyyyy

Low Storage.

Have searched and searched but cannot find something directly pertaining to System Rom memory full.
What would cause Rom being full and what can be done to make it not so? It's a stock rooted system and all apps that can be have been moved to SD card and everything not needed uninstalled. Handcent, Dolphin, and everything else could think of is set to save cache to SD card as well.
Here's a pic

My recommendation would be do a Nandroid and save your apps with BT.. and do a hard reset and see if that fix the problem.... I never had this problem before.....
Edit: Now I want to know too... cuz my is acting weird now too...
260MB (24.7 MB free) can anybody tells us why this happen....????

Was traveling yesterday so wasn't able to do any research but no matter what I do it will not get above 7.66MB free. Now after reloading the time doesn't auto update when crossing a time zone... gotta find that too.
Ben,
That's the way it is due to amazing silly usage of resources by HTC in the Incredible. du ./system = 260M and that's it. If you're using the stock system, then it just happens to add up to about ~7M free. Unless you're going to reapportion all the initial partitions, then you can't do anything about it.
All the ROMs are the same unless they've made radical changes, but all the ROMs will have different amounts of free out of the 260M.
If you want to 'fix' it, then you've got all you need if rooted and have TB. Just use ADB or a terminal emulator to do something along these lines (being careful and taking notes so you can retrace the steps if needed):
1) su ; mount system r/w (you can tell which partition it is using 'df' or 'mount' command from a shell and it is of type yaffs2
2) cd /system/app ; ls -l *[Hh][Tt][Cc]* ; ls -l *[Ss][Ee][Nn][Ss][Ee]* and check out which are kind of sizable. All you care about is stuff that is under ./system/... because things like handcent and other userspace apps are really in /data/app, and have nothing to do with this problem.
3) When you locate a few (you can do 2&3 in reverse if it makes more sense) big ones, then use TB to 'freeze' as many *SENSE* and *HTC* as you think you don't use (be careful or you'll have to restore a backup). If it's running OK with the things frozen, then you can return to the file system (./system/app) and delete the ones you've frozen. You can tell from TB which filenames go with which apps you've frozen.
4) Delete them or move them if it makes you feel safer to /sdcard/{create a dir here}.
5) df ; and look at free space in /system. It should be getting larger. When you've got ~20-30 free, you've got plenty for most things, and can remount /system a r/o (read-only).
--------------
Why? For example: If you wanted to install, for some reason, one of Lou's kernels, where he for some reason, uses separate modules for everything (It is nice in desktop linux, but sucks in the droids), then they'll go into /system/lib/modules/* and eat up a ton of space (Like 25M), and basically fail on your current system.
If you use one of Ziggy's kernels, he tends to compile all modules but Wifi into the kernel itself, coming up with a similarly sized kernel as Lou but with the functionality built-in. I use all the functionality so I like that, but if you're using the stock kernel and don't care, then forget that.
HTC did some nutty stuff with this thing, like /emmc having 6+ GB but none of it is of much use to most users, then /data/data which is where all the userspace programs keep their data and libs, is tiny, giving way to the 'out of space' message when installing programs. Google Earth, for example uses 30M in libs itself.
The only reason I used the syntax *[sS][Ee]* etc, was because I fixed this up long enough ago so that I forgot if Sense and HTC apps were case sensitive (I mean used upper case and lower or some combo of those), so this is just covering bases.
If you don't use much social networking stuff (99% of HTC & Sense apps), then you don't need a lot of /system/app files and will do OK. If you use all of that, then I suppose you're stuck unless you can locate other things you never use. (there has to be stuff you don't use). If it gets deleted from /system/... then it releases space to you in what you're calling the system ROM.
Use caution -- Changing anything from /system is asking for trouble, so make sure it's not a showstopper.
Good luck - Hashi
Thanks hachamacha for all the info. After looking at the /system and /system/app folder, I can see several files that I care nothing about. I'm going to do some research and try and find some dependencies on some of the files cause seeing files like stocks, twitter, newsreader, friend stream, radio, and amazonmp3 could clear up a lot of room. Just don't want to freeze/move any of them then discover they are a requirement for some other function.
Guessing I only need to clear up a MB or two as the only time I see the warning is when installing a program or have several running at once. It doesn't lock up and require a batt pull, just freaks me right the hell out.

You may want to checkout Autorun Manager (free app from market) to see what apps startup automatically, and more importantly, have interdependencies with other apps/programs.
Specifically, it tells you what apps have receivers, and gives you the ability to disable programs from autostarting. It's another way of disabling an app or program temporarily instead of randomly disabling/freezing apps in TB.
Might help. Might not.
Much love

Kewls and thanks. That it will tell what depends on the programs is what I'm looking for. No time to list all of them, but I froze about 20+ apps with TB. Didn't have any troubles all day yesterday but maybe can *.bak them and move to computer until needed.

Low Space warning on ICS

I am currently running the leaked ICS build 0.12. I keep getting a warning that my tablet storage space is getting low. But I don't understand how that's possible. Because on my storage in settings, it says I have total space 5.36GB. Here is a picture

If you add all that together I should have plenty of space not 168MB free.
Have you rebooted? Do you have any "corpses" (left over game data, etc) in your internal storage? Try running this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013063 to see if helps remove anything which is taking up space (and doesn't show up in the storage menu) which you don't know about.
Can't even download it says my tablet doesn't have sufficient space to download it from the play store.

You could move something(s) to your external sd card (temporarily), download and install the app, then move it/them back.

Shadowgun's data is located in Android/data/. Apps on the other hand are located in /data/app/ and /system/app/ (leave those where they are). Judging by the free space on your external sd card, Shadowgun's data will not fit. You'll probably have to move some things to your pc (or use a different sd card).

It seems like you're going to have to do a factory reset. I would also recommend flashing this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589034 since it will give you a bit more internal storage.
Hmm I think I will just wait until the official ICS update, and flash that. Maybe that will fix my problem. Anyways thanks for the help.
I just reset the tablet, and it fixed my problem. Restored everything with Titanium Backup and everything is working well.
/data/gps
Had the same problem, also waited for an update to solve it, but nothing changed. I checked the system directories, which are on the same partition but you have no right to look into them without root (pretty dumb if you ask me). I found a dir /data/gps filled with some useless txt files. Then after deleting them with Ghost Commander nearly 2 GB of free space reappeared.
Sorry it took me so long, not checking xda regularly lately.

Oh My God, I had over 10GB of files in this folder. Went from a little over 100MB free to 10.63GB. I assume this is GPS cache, but it really needs to be capped so that the older stuff gets deleted.

[Q] Memory

I may be missing something completely obvious but theres about 6gb of memory missing on my phone.
All together I have 27gb 2gb of which is reserved for apps so there is 25gb remaining.

But if I open the folder and check the space all of the files are taking up I see this:
25.2-10.4=14.8
14.8-8.74=6.06
So there is 6.06gb being used somewhere, is this normal? and does anyone know where it is?
You can try this:
Go to Control Panel on your PC, click Folder Options, select View tab, select "Show hidden files, folder, and drives", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" Click Apply button and refresh your HTC Storage folder to see if there is any change to the total space used.
Quite a funny discovery you made there.
I don't have the answer, just some suppositions
-I heard there was a swap on the One X, however I think it's not supposed to be on this partition and not that big so it doesn't explain the problem
-HTC is fooling us with a fake size (probably not)
-Windows doesn't see some hidden files, however Android is Unix based and hidden unix files are not displayed as such by Windows so I think hidden files could only be added by you
-Windows doesn't display the good size (what values does android display ?)

I'm thinking it may be some sort of cache partition but I'm not rooted so finding it would be hard.

I thought this was it too but it didn't make any difference when I enabled it.
It's pretty much the same thing you see with harddrives. Manufacturers use GB counting (1kb=1000 bytes) while pc's use GiB's (1kb=1024 bytes) On 32GB drive you would loose 3.2GiB due to the conversion. leaving you with 29.8GiB of raw space.
2.11GiB is reserved for /data So that makes 27.7GiB
/system 1GiB
/cache 314mb
leaving 26.4gGiB of raw space for /mnt/sdcard
After that some space is lost due to formatting, leaving you with 25GiB of free space.

I understand this but the issue I am having is that on /mnt/sdcard there is 6.06gb unaccounted for.
Run a Terminal emulator (you don't need root) and run the 'df' command
you should get a partition list. There you can see the /mnt/sdcard partition is only 25GiB in size. The rest is used for the system

You are correct /mnt/sdcard is 25gb in size but I only have 10gb remaining when the files stored on it have come to a total of about 9gb so I'm wondering what is taking up the remaining 6gb.

I was trying to avoid doing this but if I can't find the answer soon its probably what I'll end up doing.
Edit:
I took your advice and deleted everything from the internal memory and I still only had 18gb(instead of 25). I then formatted the internal memory which brought me to 25gb and when I copied everthing back I now have about 16gb(instead of 10).
Its still bugging me not knowing what was causing it but at least its fixed.
Thanks

Why is my phone suddenly telling me I'm low on free space this morning? It just updated CWM Recovery using ROM Manager then went to bed and when I woke up, turned my phone back on and all of my free space is gone into some other universe not classified by my phone.
My phone doesn't react any different, its not sluggish or glitchy, but I can't install any apps now. Any suggestions?
Looks like you are on a 4.2+ based rom. Might want to check if you have nested /0 folders. Or a quick wipe with Odin should reset it

Does the new CWM not restore old CWM backups? I've also noticed that the Fix Permissions is gone from this new CWM.

The "0" folders are legacy and storage duplicate files that are created when installing AOSP roms or their variant builds. .
Unless you run the CM revert .zip...or manually move the "0" folder contents back to internal storage. ..they will collect and diminish your internal storage down to nothing over time. ..g

I've taken to just formatting my internal storage every time I flash or restore now a days, to eliminate all this "crap" from eating up space on internal storage; when I do that, I have around 9 gigs of free space, even after setting up/restoring a rom...I lose anything that was on internal storage, but, I keep all movies/music/photos on my external card anyways, so I dont ever really "lose" anything I care about...and, things like nova backups, or anything else like that, can be stored somewhere on your external card at all times, and just get moved back to internal after you flash/restore a rom with a tool like root explorer...
That freed up a lot thanks but it still seems I have duplicate stuff in a few places it seems like, for instance the emulated, 0, and legacy folders

With all the different bases for the roms, unless you get used to backing up app data then formatting /data and /system between flashes, you eventually end up with a buttload of crap.

recovering deleted pictures from internal sdcard

hello , is there anyway to recover deleted pictures from internal sdcad after formating system ??? , i tried many apps through google but all failed ,
i desperately need these pictures cuz they contain credit card informations which i must have
You are going to have to put your SD card into the computer and use a recovery program. SD cards don't have a "trash" so you will need to find software to recover it. IMPORTANT!! DO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! the more reads and writes to your card, the more likely that the files you are looking for will be purged off. The reason I know its possible is because I just had to do this about 6 months ago. Good luck

You are going to have to put your SD card into the computer and use a recovery program. SD cards don't have a "trash" so you will need to find software to recover it. IMPORTANT!! internal SD.....not external SD ! zo thats a nice idea but not going to work as its not removable.
as long as you can't mount the internal SD as an USB disk its a no go to run recovery software as 99% of those type of software needs a USB disk to run and NOT MTP type of storage.
I think I saw a hack around XDA that allowed you to mount the memory, or extract the contents, to be able to recover (possibly) data. But it seemed like a lot of hoops to jump through. Plus, data recovery programs will often be only partially successful, under the best of circumstances.
Consider it a lesson learned, and backup your photos next time. With a variety of easy cloud options, there is really no reason not to.

do you have a Nandroid ? why didn't you use the Google drive or Dropbox for backup ?
HTC gives every One owner a Google Drive just for this reason

well you could try
reboot to TWRP recovery to avoid further damage to the partition, make sure /external_sd is mounted
Code:
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p47 of=/external_sd/mmcblk0p47_userdata.img
(that should be a raw ext4 partition)
once that's done, take out your external sdcard, and using a card reader, try mounting it in linux then use some recovery program,
you may possibly need to convert it the raw partition, but i'm not sure about all that, just trying to point you in the [possibly] right direction
but in all cases, very low chance of success probably
EDIT: for example, i was able to mount the partition (i made a backup when i first got the phone), just to test using DiskInternals Linux Reader:

Disk digger works very very well. I have used it a few times to help others out. It's success rate is pretty high.
Just ensure to recover to the external sd card.
I suggest that you try this htc data recovery solution.
Good luck.

Phone based data recovery apps (such as from the Play store) are your best bet.
As you may be referring to (hard to tell with a one line, vague post) PC based programs have been (at least somewhat) successful recovering data from smartphones in the past. But since Android has moved to MTP protocol (versus USB mass storage), most of those programs won't work.
The phone apps will work to some degree, with internal storage. But data recovery is always an iffy proposition. Once the memory blocks get overwritten, the data is gone for good (at least by any reasonable, consumer level retrieval methods).
