Huawei has just unveiled the Ascend P6 Android smartphone at a crowded event in London. At 6.1mm thick, it's the slimmest smartphone in the world.

Agreed - It might just be the worthy successor to my old Desire
Wish Canadian carriers had these, or many other brands...only phones you can get here are HTC and Samsung..occasionally you will see LG or Motorola.
I got one!
As I'm on vacation in China, I just got an Ascend P6 myself.

I know it's pretty hard to tell, but what about the battery? How much/for what did you use it before you had to charge it?
Thanks.

That's because you go the Chinese version. The P6 for markets outside the Chinese market will definately have Google apps.

Do you find it to be sluggish? The Engadget review said it slowed down at times. I don't care about gaming, but I do want the phone to be fluid. Especially a phone that's as sleek as the P6.
I still only habe Chinese branded Apps. Though the Browser looks and feels like chrome. And yes, it's dos not feel as fluid as a Nexus 4. But I like the slim design.

Just got the phone today (European version) and it's a very decent phone. It's pretty good in speed and performance, it's true the phone becomes warm when using it intensively but it doesn't bother me. Both main camera and front camera is pretty good. Emotion UI is also pretty decent. (IMO it's a 90% rip of MIUI though...)
Would like to see a forum added for this phone soon

Yes, if it is European version.
OK, I just studied the P6 spec more closely.
I don't understand how Huawei can release a phone with such mediocre spec as a high end phone.
The P6 can merely compete with the old Galaxy S3, and it is more than a year newer.

I can see where your coming from but in day to day use, the p6 performs just as well as any other high end device. Number and benchmarks to me don't mean anything. I've been using the p6 for about 3 days and when it comes to text, phone calls, internet browsing and other normal functions, the phone is amazing. Not to mention, I've had everyone around me mistake it for a toy phone and once finding out it's not, ask how they can obtain one.

Hi I'm considering the Motorola Defy, sim free from AmazonUK, but I have a few queries.
Are micro SDHC cards compatible with this phone? I know some devices can only use SD and not SDHC. Also is there a size limit for a memory card?
Is Android 2.2 confirmed by Motorola for official release?
Is it possible to selectively turn off 3g? I will be in Wifi zones most of the time I'm on the internet and don't have a data plan.
Can the flash be used as a flashlight? Alright this won't sway me but it could be useful.
What is MotoBlur? and do I need twitter/facebook to set it up or can I just use an email address?
I was also considering the HTC Desire however this phone seemed very similar but £100 cheaper, is there anything I would be desperatly missing? I know this has a slightly slower processor, but anything else.
Thanks I really appreciate you taking the time to read this.
Yes. No size limit.
Yes. Q2 of 2011

Yes. download tesla LED from market.
Don't need twitter/facebook. Motoblur is a free service. You use your existing email and it let's you manage things from website including remote wipe.

Thanks disturkis4u.
Also just a couple more questions.
Is the model with white sides the US T-mobile branded model? and are the other models completely black?
Finally, does the OS affect the compatibility of certain apps ie. would some apps be for Android 2.2+ therefore not work on 2.1? Seeing as the Defy is currently behind the latest OS I wondered if app compatibility could be a problem especially if I decide to keep the Defy for quite a while.
white sides is the t-mobile version. Not sure of all black models.
There are some apps that are 2.2 only. From what i've seen those tend to be the google ones like gmail 2.2, youtube, chrome extension etc.

On the Motorola non-US site there are a lot of reports of the phone sounding like it's muted on a call and only speakerphone works. Most of these are from Germany, but they have had the phone the longest. I have seen a very few on the US site. I bought mine when it was first released in the US and so far have no issues. So far. I really like this phone and would rather have to get it fixed than get another phone because I don't like anything else out there... except the Nokia N8. I sold my Htc Desire and got the Defy instead, havent looked back. Only thing I miss is the online rom kitchen over at Modaco, but I see a lot of devs getting the Defy, so I'm confident that we'll see a lot of custom Defy roms soon, or at least a lot of hacks and mods. I love that I no longer have to baby my phone (I tend to break things) and so my german Defy has the best in-call sound I've ever tried, way better than the Desire, whose speaker I broke (6 foot drop onto concrete, my bad) after 3 days.
Oh and Froyo is confirmed for O2 branded Defys from Germany for Q1 2011, so the 2.2 roms shouldn't be that far away. Rumors are also circling that China Mobile will start shipping Froyo-powered Defys "soon"...

That's not 100% true.
I have a Defy with white sides purchased from Carphone Warehouse in the UK - completely unlocked and un-branded.
I asked clove.co.uk about the colors and they said black'n'white were for telecoms only as far as they knew, and that there might be other color schemes eventually.. They carry the all black, that's what on it's way to me, so..
Hello, thank you for the enquiry. We think that there will be colour variants, most probably just black and white however it is also very likely that if this is the case then they will be network exclusives in the UK and only the Black version will be available for sale SIM free. Of course if this situation changes then we will list all variations on the website and offer current customers the choice.

Hi, seeing as you had a Desire what are the main things I would be missing if I decided to go for the Defy, the only thing I can really tell is that the Defy has a slightly slower processor, how does this compare to the Desires?
Also I saw in a couple of online videos there is a bit of lag when using pinch to zoom can anyone tell me how bad this is?
Finally if in a wifi zone (which I am connected to eg. at home) when using the browser will the Defy automatically use wifi before mobile internet?
PS. thanks for the heads up on the earpiece problem I think I'll go for it anyway as I have been slightly put off by the Desire due to widespread random reboot issues and to me this is less of a problem (and seems less common), so if need be I'll get it repaired.
Thanks all.
The benchmarks have been pretty good on this phone. In real life I only occasionally notice a lag when pushing through the app drawer.
Wifi: assume you are on T-Mo USA and will have wifi calling app? If so it has a selection to favor wifi connect, or even wifi only. With wifi favored, mine choses wifi over 3G if the wifi signal is good. I suppose it's possible it may differ with different routers.

Calm down, boys, we all very well know that official Jellybean won't be on our phones that fast. It's Sony, so we have to wait(thanks to CM, no more. After CM I see little reason to use stock). We saw news about early november/late october, now it's december, after december it will be january, and some site will yell OMG EXPARIA S IZ OPTODET TO JILLYBEAM!!!!111111
No, it won't happen before the time Sony decided. They won't just say "Hey guys, let's make a surprise" and release JB.
Hi, I'm currently still using stock rom on my xperia s. Is CM really such a huge difference? And which CM should I take? (CM 9 or 10) Thanks!

Yeah, that made me mad a bit... I mean I love the camera and the screen of the XS but since ICS it's a piece of garbage... Losing focus, music stutters, no quick launch for cam, network drop out, random slowdowns, home screen redraw, etc... Last sony for sure... I'll try to enjoy it until it dies and then either a Nexus or WP. Enough of Android's fragmentation, late updates (if any), childish UI on other manufacturers roms, etc. I'm looking forward to see if JB improves anything but so far from what I saw on other devices (mainla cooked rom's however, it won't). We'll see (or not)

Get a Nexus.. I too am sick of Sony and their lack of updates. I had an Arc S, and it was OK, I have an Xperia S and it's terrible, FAR too many software faults, most of which you mention.

Hi-
So I've been looking at getting an Android device, as I'd finally like to leave apple. I have considered the Samsung S4 and Xperia Z, but they don't suit (too expensive, or too big).
However, I recently saw this device on sale (in Australia - $388), and the spec's have impressed me a lot. It's the international version (32GB, 13MP camera).
My priorities are:
1. Use as an eReader
2. Decent Battery
3. Run remote desktop apps (VNC/LogMeIn)
4. Play games (mainly SNES/n64 emulators)
I've noticed the development scene for this phone is not big. What does this mean for me? Just less roms available?
I'm also concerned as I've read the camera isn't great... Is that right? Have any of the new roms fixed it?
Also- will multiview be possible? I know it isn't on stock- but can any ROM's do it?
Cheers

Custom roms are working great,no issues.we have quality over quantity.
Multi view is not for g,but for g pro.don't know if a value pack with goodies from g pro will be released for g.i hope it will.

Some games wiping battery in one and half hours.
It's better than stock, at least for me,with a litle tweaking.
For moderate usage you will get 1 day easily.I'm a heavy gamer, though, got 5 hrs of real racing 3 .this is great for me.
No complains here.
Moderate usage for me is this :
20-30 minutes talk
Texts
3 hrs browsing(including youtube) on 3g/LTE
1.5hr or so of gaming like you said(not fancy 3d games)
Music in the background
Battery lasts from morning till dawn without any problems
Seriously 5 hours? That's unreal :-O
i will post screens when i will let the phone settle for a while, easter it's coming here and i will be off for 3 days
It's very important what apps/services are running in the background and the network signal.I use greenify to be sure nothing i don't want is not running in the background

I think I saw this- quickview or something. It seems ok, but not exactly what I need.
I was sold on it, after everything you all told me, but then when I went to get the device- I just found it too square/large. It's similar to the Xperia Z in size, and the squareness makes it quite bulgy in my jeans. So I'm affaid on size alone- it's no longer an option for me
after spending a while with the G, i´d avise you to go with a mainstream device....
yea the G looks nice, but the camera sucks, battery sucks and with mainstream stuff you get faster updates, more community support and so on
Yeah right,a premium device sucks more than a mainstream. do you realise what you are saying?it's like ,man,go for renault, not mercedes.
Again, why would i need updates if the original software has no issues?just for the sake to say, hey,i have the latest firmware.no visible improvements, but, what the heck,i have the latest.
To be honest, gesture ui from lg is the smoothiest experience compared to similar devices from major competitors(s3,onex).heck,compared with a nexus 4,which is the "pure" android experience, there is no difference.an i compared some flagships, not medium devices.if you advice someone to go for mainstream,it means you never had such devices.in order to trully enjoy android experience, you need at least dual core,1gb ram, decent gpu and at qhd or more display.
Tell me what mainstream device meets all these requirements.

Camera solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065799
I will admit, camera is not as good as other devices, but that tweak offered by Epic_ actually helps greatly with clarity/quality.
Battery:
Root and unlock your phone using universal root / manual + FreeGee.
Install Titanium Backup - remove the bloatware (LG MLT in particular)
Install Greenify - greenify your apps
Disable Fast Dormancy..
Battery life is insane after doing all this. Phone deep sleeps properly.. 2 hours screen time so far, wifi always on / 3g + data on and I'm on 75%, which is on par if not beats the other "mainstream devices" - (SGS3, One X..)
The build quality of this phone is also amazing - observe this drop test of the phone.. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj_F_qc5cds
I actually don't mind that there isn't a lot of ROM development for this phone.. I actually really like LG's stock offering. QSlide is actually quite useful.
And this is coming from me who came from a Nexus S lol

hey guys,
i've been doing some reading on xda for the past few days to determine wich phone i should buy.
my choices are lg nexus 4 and offcourse the huawei ascend p6.
my first thought is to go for the nexus but as it's quite old it's hard to get (with carrier/provider subscription). it's possible but i have to choose a provider with wich i have serious doubts.
in that matter the huawei has better options for me.
but i'm not 100% convinced to buy this phone but i'm sure it has got great potential. i also really like to use custom roms and kernels.
the bootloader..
i've read that it's unlocked but has got some kind of encryption so in some way's you can say it's still locked.
though i've seen that recently there is a custom kernel available.. so does that mean that flashing custom kernels is possible?
(if i would buy a huawei it would be a european version btw)
i'm starting to understand you need to be on a CN version/unlocked firmware in order to flash custom kernels. what does that mean? does it mean you need to be on the chinese versions?
and what about going from european firmware to chinese? is this possible without problems/bricks?
one other great thing about this phone that it's getting that 4.4 update. is there any news that this new firmware will be open source?
i've also read that there is going to be a google edition of the p6 wich means a clean android version, wich means open source?? please correct me if i'm wrong!
my first impression reading this section is great, i see some dev's that really are putting a lot of time and effort in developing this phone.
i have also seen that the p6 had some bugs when it's launched but many of them are repaired by stock firmware updates wich is a good thing.
hopefully you can help me a little bit so i can make my choice..
many thanks in advance!

Hi,
I cannot answer your questions, I just have laid my hands on a P6. I'm coming from an SGS2 (I still use that one)
My initial impressions of the P6 are mixed.
I like the thinness. I love the material (there are only a few metallic Android phones out there). I love the speed.
However, I do not like Huawei's ROM. The user interface is more like iOS, so I installed NovaLauncher, it makes life better But it looks to me that some important Android features are absent. For example, the native Android SIP client seems to be inaccessible (or is it just me not finding it?) HW wise, having the USB/charger socket at the top of the device rather than the bottom is really clumsy. The device can get uncomfortably hot during usage.
I am tempted to try a different ROM until Huawei comes out with a KitKat update,
never mind..
my first thought went to the Nexus 4 and today I've discovered it had the best deal for me.
i had to pay extra for the ascend p6 were the Nexus 4 was free in combination with my carrier subscription.
so the choice was pretty easy.. the Nexus 4 it is..
I have it running on HYDROM, and batt. life increased a lot. Really love my P6 (coming from iPhone).
Hi guys, currently using Mediapad M5 but I'm starting to get a little bored and frustrated with things I thought I could live with like no headphone jack and no ear speaker. Thinking about getting the Mate 20 but I have a concern. I'm a dedicated user of Nova Launcher and have read about people having difficulty changing the launcher. Is there something I can look out for when buying the phone to ensure I have a version that will allow me to delete the Huawei launcher or change the default? Also I'm interested in anything else you guys can advise me to look out for. I'm in NJ and I use ATT. I'm assuming I should be looking for the international version, but other than that I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hello there!
I am a big fan of big phones and I understand why you would want this phone, its dual speakers are great and headphone jack sound is the best I have heard with dolby atmos.
You can only change launcher on global version (EVR-L29) like mine, non-stock launchers work great!
I suggest you to buy the global version and not chinese for less bloatware, working notifications, working 3rd party launchers, fully working rom out of the box and gapps.
There are 2 versions of the phone Global and Chinese; Global version is EVR-L29 while the chinese version has 2 variants - normal EVR-AL00 and a branded china telecom version EVR-TL00
I personally got my phone from a local store near my home which luckily had the evr-l29 in stock, but I suggest to look on amazon for internation version or ask some people here
Thanks Omer!! Are you in the US?

I'm in the USA, and I agree with Omer.
I'm in the USA and have this phone. It works great on att but here is the problem. With a locked bootloader you have no options once Huawei stops supporting it. I have the Chinese version so you deal with little quirks here and there as well.
I got mine when I was in hong Kong. Everything works perfectly including google, nova launcher. And works in Canada on all networks so I assume the US should be good as well.

I got rid of my tablet and only use my Mate 20 X phone and laptop. My Mate 20 X has replace my tablet. I watch movies and shows on it all the time. I initially thought that 7.2 inches is too small to watch movies. 8.4 or 10.5 would be better. BUT after a few weeks, this is the perfect size for consuming media for me and it's light enough for the pocket. I don't miss my tablet at all. I sold my phone, tablet and laptop and only use this Mate 20 x and a PixelBook. Happy as hell!

It's a fantastic phone, fast, pictures look great, videos not as good as an iphone. But I'd hold off if you can until September to see what happens with Google, etc...

I dont agree with you about holding off and videos, the videos I took look way better than my friends xs max.
I wouldnt hold off, huawei confirmed that every existing device will still get updates and security updates as well as confirming emui 9.1 june 27 and android q request for mate 20 x. they wont remove gapps or android from existing phones but future ones wont have them
Thanks for all the input. I will likely pull the trigger this week. So just to confirm, with the EVR-L29, I should have no problem using Nova Launcher, correct?

Correct. With the global version EVR-L29 you can use any launcher you want. See attached..
If you have the root time, you can change it in Chinese easily

Get it, You won't regret it. Best phone I've ever had. I replaced my Note 9 that I had for only 2 months with this phone. And I barely use my tablet now.
But make sure you put a glass screen protector and a nice case before you use it. The glass one on Amazon is perfect.
The only thing I don't like is Telegram App does not always toast new messages. The OS automatically kills some apps that run too often in the background.

But you have the options to remove apps from that self killing "feature" though
