Been unable to rate threads recently - About xda-developers.com

It was working fine a couple of months ago but for the past few weeks I've been unable to rate any thread. I've tried different browsers but clicking on the stars or the down arrow on the right doesn't do anything. I know a few others are having the same issue. Are there newly added requirements for you to rate a thread, like when you registered or how many posts you have? Thanks in advance!

Are you able to check your web browser console to see if there is any error message?
I did just change to jQuery 1.10.1 last night, so I'm curious if this "fixed" it for you.
Also try to clear all of your browser cache to see if that helps.

Tried clearing cache but that didn't help. I did see a bunch or error messages related to XDA in the web console of Firefox. Do I need to post that here? I cleared the log and only opened the xda thread but the error messages are still a few pages long.

I'm not able to rate this thread either. chrome Version 27.0.1453.110 m, windows xp.

First I thought that the ability was taken away from OP of the threads but then realised that was not the case. Tried Firefox, Chrome and Safari. But no luck in doing so.

I'm using FireFox v17.0.6 (need for my work) > no thread rating.
It's since few days ... maybe a week or so.
Sorry for not reporting earlier as I thought that it could be because of my out-dated FireFox version.
Tested now in Opera 12.15 > no thread rating.
And Internet Explorer 8.0 > no thread rating.
EDIT:
Error Console in FireFox gives several warnings, e.g.:
Warning: Unknown property 'user-select'. Declaration dropped.

XDA Forum login issues.

EDIT: Not an advertising issue, as pointed out throughout this thread. Potential solution (works for me) is to change the forum theme. Go to the lower left of the forums and use the drop-down box. Change to the last option XDA 2013 beta 1024. This has fixed the issue for me, as well as for Formicae (post #4) who reported this fix.
Yesterday I started having issues with the website. Whenever I'd visit, I'd have to log back in. However, navigating to a subforum would automatically log me in. I initially assumed that it had to do with me getting Chrome 23 last night. However, then I noticed it happening on my phone's browser (Stock touchwiz browser). I didn't just have two systems go loopy at the same time.
I'm one of those oddballs that uses an adblocker but whitelists domains that I trust. I want you guys to get advertising revenue from me because I support the website. But, I noticed the problem resolved on my phone whenever I got around the popup ad. So, I re-enabled ad-blocking on this domain. Guess what? Problem solved. No more login issues.
Might want to look at your advertisements and see what's preventing users from remaining logged in. I could login and navigate to the subforums, but then if I clicked the forum button at the top, I'd be logged out again until I navigated elsewhere. There's an advertisement doing this.
I'm not sure it's ads. It happens to me whether I block them or not. But SOMEthing is making me log back in or, as you say, just go to a subforum.
I switched to the XDA 2013 Beta theme (bottom left of browser window, drop menu) and haven't had to log in again despite a couple of browser restarts and a computer restart. Might be nothing, but worth a shot?
I've been required to login on every visit to XDA as well, started on Monday or Tuesday afaik.
me too having the same problem.
Some new changes may be causing this - these are being investigated.
Happening to me as well. Using the XDA 2010 theme if that matters.

This fixed it for me. Updated first post.
Are you all saying the login issue is caused by popover ads not allowing you to see the login box? Or something else?
it's nothing to do with ads.

Nope, he's having the same problem I posted in your thread earlier. hasn't happened to me again since then though.
I just pushed a new fix which I believe will correct this. To take effect you might need to wipe your browser cache/cookies.
If anyone is still having problems logging in, or staying logged in, please clear your cache and cookies and re-login (check "Remember me") and then if it happens again, let me know what page you clicked on that logged you out (for example - showthread.php or forumdisplay.php).
Updated first post again to clarify.
EDIT: Thanks for the fix. I'll give it a try on multiple devices and report back.
Even though we're all certain that advertisements weren't causing the issue, I just wanted to add further confirmation. I started whitelisting XDA on my adblocker again yesterday and have no login issues.

Yep, that worked, thx!
Switching to 1024 theme also worked for me.
I would literally get logged out for switching tabs and coming back to XDA. Really put a damper on releasing my ROMs this week because every-time I would edit the post and submit, it would say please log back in.
EDIT: Wiping caches seem to work too. Back on normal theme.

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for making this thread. I too thought it was just the update to chrome or something (on dev builds - so who knows when something doesnt work what the real problem is) - but that it was not the site. But seeing others having this problem is a relief because now I dont have to re-login every time now as that fix fixed it for me (choosing the 1024 theme, they must have changed something so thanks admins!).
It's doing it again today. I'm going to clear my internet cache/history/cookies everything and see if that fixes it. If not, I'll go back to the 1024 theme.
No matter what I do, the 2010 theme doesn't keep me logged in :/
Guess I'll try to get used to the 2013 theme... (that extra space on the right of the browser annoys the heck out of me though)
EDIT: It's "forumdisplay.php" that seems to think I'm logged out, until I either refresh the page or open another link ("showthread.php" doesn't do it to me)
EDIT2: The 2013 theme doesn't work any better, it still thinks I'm logged out after 15 minutes of inactivity, then logs me back in after refreshing
Going back to the 1024 template fixed it for me. When I thought things had been fixed, I was still on the 1024 template. Switching back to the forum default is what messed me up again.
So, the forum default XDA 2013 beta has login issues. The 1024 version does not.

Unable to Reply/Post Threads or Messages

Hey guys,
For the past few days, Ive been getting issues whenever I try to post threads/messages or reply to them. I tried both Quick Reply & Advanced Reply same story. Further tested with changing the theme from XDA 2013 - 1024 to XDA Classic and also tried switching browser from Chrome to IE10 and still same issue Basically, when I click submit, the loading of page seems to progress forever till the error message comes saying Server sent no reply data Its been bugging me for days and its annoying as hell
2 Points to note :
I might have issue posting to a specific thread for hours but I can post in other threads quite easily. After a while, I will be able to post again to the thread which I previously had issues.
I dont think I've made any changes my side and after trying 2 different browsers as well as different themes, I think its a problem on the Server itself
Hope the Site Devs can fix this soon Thanks in Advance and Keep up the Good Work
Cheers & Happy New Year

You sure its same issue?
Because you don't have 10 posts.. so you don't have permission to post in development section threads.. if you got problems in that section.. then its common.. if you got problems while replying in other section then contact mods.. see link in above posts .. I think its just 10 post rule you missed..
Now that you have 10.. you can post anywhere..

Hmmmm...this is strange. Apologies for no one having tried to help sooner. I'll see what we can do
Thanks for the albeit delayed feedback just in case it helps, I noticed that it depends in some way on the message content or the title. If I start a new page and retype (not copy paste) the same thing, it won't work sometimes changing the title helps and other times, the message itself... In the case of posts, if I can't post a certain message, copy pasting and then adding it via a quick edit works but if it doesn't, then same issue will show in normal reply.. I confirmed that its browser and platform independent and also, I didn't accidentally add any Unicode characters
Hope the above might give a clue what the issue is thanks in advance
Cheers
I have't heard this error reported elsewhere, it sounds like a network issue possibly.
Have you tried on another connection?
I considered the possibility but I'm mostly at college and only one ISP here plus it's not exactly reproducible so I couldn't find out about that if it's a network issue, any idea why it occurs ? I only see this issue on xda,ie, I can read posts and all, make different replies etc but specific messages won't work ( at sometimes and work fine later) and same issue with browsing in iPad so can't see why or how I'm getting this error and it's been bugging me for ages popping up for so long. Again, hope you have any advice
Thanks for the quick reply
Cheers
No issue here.
Sometimes loading seems to take a while but the pages are loading correctly
I've seen in the past weeks that sometimes this forum taking long before it load, maybe due to lot of traffics from readers...
Hopefully some issues from other user will be fixed!

contact forms unusable

Hi,
sorry when this may be the wrong forum but I have no idea where else I can write.
I wanted to use the contact form (http://www.xda-developers.com/contact) to report an urgent issue but I cannot use it.
I tried it with firefox and chrome and doing this on several days in the last week but when I click on the "send" button an arrow is displayed which is moving around and keeps moving for hours - nothing more happening.
It doesn't matter which one I try - I tested 2 (urgent and contact the webmaster).
I have no idea how to contact xda and wanted to know if this is a problem only for me or if others having the same problem?
Thanks in advance

I've heard this a lot but I have tested on different browsers and haven't been able to reproduce this. Are you using any browser extensions that might block 3rd party scripts? Can you check the browser console when you try to send the comment to see if there is an error message? You can use the Technical contact form which goes directly to me.
Hi,
Thanks for taking some time on this!
I've tried with FF (x86) and chrome, normal and private mode. I'm on W8.1.
I have only two extension in FF : ghostery and abp.
ABP always off in xda and I deactivate ghostery for testing .
The send button still spinning but nothing else happen. (try every combination)

And as you said, It seem like it's just a bug for two people, the OP and me. No one else came here to report too. So .....?
If I can help ? maybe some log or specific tests/info that help you to reproduce 'our' bug...do not hesitate.

I wanted to report that I have the same issue. I tried the webmaster contact form and I also just get the spinning arrow. I have tried several times over at least a month. I have tried both Firefox and Opera on two different Windows 10 machines, Firefox on a Linux machine and Dolphin Browser on my phone. I have had no luch with any of these.
Is there any other information, or anything else I could try to help debug this issue?

This can be caused by extensions or settings requesting pages in the background. This feature is called "prefetching" and requests links before you actually click on them. It's fast for user experience but hammers the server. You shouldn't be hitting the 429 rate limit unless there are a lot of requests coming to the server.
Me too, I only go to the forum a few times a day and get this error every time?
It's getting that way, it's not worth the effort.
Doesn't seem to be any fix for the issue, or, am I missing some thing?

Disable prefetching in your browser, this "feature" causes the browser to load a bunch of pages in the background. On a busy site like XDA we rate limit pages to prevent abuse, imagine if everyone loading a page actually loads 20 pages in the background.
Tried the 3 main browsers on my personal Windows 10 laptop, connected to my S9 hotspot. The problem happens on all 3 browsers when I try to download 1 file (CyanogenMod for Note 4 https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=19462)
Tried my work laptop on my work's network connection, same error in both FFox & IE11 on Windows Server 2012.
Tried on 2 different T-Mobiles phones in the Chrome broswer - same error.
Seems like the "429 rate limit" is crap on XDA. I haven't been on this website in years - kinda sad to see such a silly configuration problem causing so much grief for users.
Anyone know a different source for the 2nd newest unofficial CM for the Verizon Note 4 (the latest release fails to boot - stuck on CM logo)? I really really want/need it. Thanks!

same issue here too
Just registered and can't even change profile settings because of this.
The only reason I registered was to keep the dark theme applied across tabs. That's it.

That's what I tried to do as well, but still kept getting the error. What started working now is if I open any of the forums and get the error, I just click on the reload button in the browser, than the page loads up. Everything seems to work though in the XDA forum app.

XDA Forums keeps logging me in??

I'm experiencing a strange issue with XDA and it's forums. I'll click the XDA forum link on my bookmark bar (Chrome or Opera) and I will be auto logged in, so that's great. But if I click to go to any different page in XDA, it keeps re-logging me back in instead of remembering that I just did that.
Does anyone know a fix for this as it's quite annoying.

That's a limitation of our API...everytime you load a page, it has to "reach out" to our API to figure out if you have new notifications. But the team here says they're working on a fix to store this info locally so there is no delay :highfive:

Thanks for the follow up. Did they mention if this was a new thing as I have only started to experience this issue a few weeks back. But all through last year, this wasn't a problem, I'd log in and it would not ask me again unless I logged myself out.

They didn't mention it but I can assure you it started when the new header has been updated for 2015 themes. I have tested and this login issue doesn't exist with other xda themes, e.g. 2013 theme.
Edit: the new forum header has been changed for 2015 themes at the very beginning of December (around December 5th)

XDA get you get this fixed.. I hated this annoying bug! It annoys me to the max.
Edit: disabling Pricavy Badger & uBlock didn't fix it.
I think you should completely wipe out your browser history and delete cookies too. Re-launch your browser and check. It should be working fine.
Does anyone solve this problem?

So I wiped browser history and deleted cookies and relaunched both browsers.
Still experiencing the same issue.

Then you might have to re-install the Browser. Make sure to save your bookmarks in a file first.
I also have this problem and can confirm that changing the theme from 2015 Dark to 2013 fix the annoying "Redirecting..." issue.
Hope that it will be fixed for the Dark theme, too, because 2013' looks so old now!
