XDA Forum login issues. - About xda-developers.com

EDIT: Not an advertising issue, as pointed out throughout this thread. Potential solution (works for me) is to change the forum theme. Go to the lower left of the forums and use the drop-down box. Change to the last option XDA 2013 beta 1024. This has fixed the issue for me, as well as for Formicae (post #4) who reported this fix.
Yesterday I started having issues with the website. Whenever I'd visit, I'd have to log back in. However, navigating to a subforum would automatically log me in. I initially assumed that it had to do with me getting Chrome 23 last night. However, then I noticed it happening on my phone's browser (Stock touchwiz browser). I didn't just have two systems go loopy at the same time.
I'm one of those oddballs that uses an adblocker but whitelists domains that I trust. I want you guys to get advertising revenue from me because I support the website. But, I noticed the problem resolved on my phone whenever I got around the popup ad. So, I re-enabled ad-blocking on this domain. Guess what? Problem solved. No more login issues.
Might want to look at your advertisements and see what's preventing users from remaining logged in. I could login and navigate to the subforums, but then if I clicked the forum button at the top, I'd be logged out again until I navigated elsewhere. There's an advertisement doing this.

I'm not sure it's ads. It happens to me whether I block them or not. But SOMEthing is making me log back in or, as you say, just go to a subforum.

I switched to the XDA 2013 Beta theme (bottom left of browser window, drop menu) and haven't had to log in again despite a couple of browser restarts and a computer restart. Might be nothing, but worth a shot?

I've been required to login on every visit to XDA as well, started on Monday or Tuesday afaik.

me too having the same problem.

Some new changes may be causing this - these are being investigated.

Happening to me as well. Using the XDA 2010 theme if that matters.

This fixed it for me. Updated first post.

Are you all saying the login issue is caused by popover ads not allowing you to see the login box? Or something else?

it's nothing to do with ads.

Nope, he's having the same problem I posted in your thread earlier. hasn't happened to me again since then though.

I just pushed a new fix which I believe will correct this. To take effect you might need to wipe your browser cache/cookies.
If anyone is still having problems logging in, or staying logged in, please clear your cache and cookies and re-login (check "Remember me") and then if it happens again, let me know what page you clicked on that logged you out (for example - showthread.php or forumdisplay.php).

Updated first post again to clarify.
EDIT: Thanks for the fix. I'll give it a try on multiple devices and report back.

Even though we're all certain that advertisements weren't causing the issue, I just wanted to add further confirmation. I started whitelisting XDA on my adblocker again yesterday and have no login issues.

Yep, that worked, thx!

Switching to 1024 theme also worked for me.
I would literally get logged out for switching tabs and coming back to XDA. Really put a damper on releasing my ROMs this week because every-time I would edit the post and submit, it would say please log back in.
EDIT: Wiping caches seem to work too. Back on normal theme.

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for making this thread. I too thought it was just the update to chrome or something (on dev builds - so who knows when something doesnt work what the real problem is) - but that it was not the site. But seeing others having this problem is a relief because now I dont have to re-login every time now as that fix fixed it for me (choosing the 1024 theme, they must have changed something so thanks admins!).

It's doing it again today. I'm going to clear my internet cache/history/cookies everything and see if that fixes it. If not, I'll go back to the 1024 theme.

No matter what I do, the 2010 theme doesn't keep me logged in :/
Guess I'll try to get used to the 2013 theme... (that extra space on the right of the browser annoys the heck out of me though)
EDIT: It's "forumdisplay.php" that seems to think I'm logged out, until I either refresh the page or open another link ("showthread.php" doesn't do it to me)
EDIT2: The 2013 theme doesn't work any better, it still thinks I'm logged out after 15 minutes of inactivity, then logs me back in after refreshing

Going back to the 1024 template fixed it for me. When I thought things had been fixed, I was still on the 1024 template. Switching back to the forum default is what messed me up again.
So, the forum default XDA 2013 beta has login issues. The 1024 version does not.

Infinite ads - no back button

I have written this on the main interface page and received no answers.
On some pages I get to a point where no matter how many times I click on the back button, the page goes nowhere. When I long click on the back button it shows a list and there are pages of the same link that has the word ads in it. If I click on the bottom item in the list and long click on the back button again, the same list comes up. If I do this several times, I finally get to where I was to navigate to the page.
While I haven't actually taken the time to count, I am sure that there are over 40-50 page listings that come up from one page with only a few messages.
I am using IE9 and I want to know what I can do to stop this overtly evil behavior. I fully understand the need for ads but I don't see any good reasoning to hijack my page. If I click on a link in the page, I can then go back to normal. It doesn't happen on every page, just sometimes.
Since my bookmark to this site is on IE9 and not Chrome or Firefox and since I navigate to this site only on my desktop, I don't get the problem elsewhere. This behavior is only on this site. Some sites open pop under windows (also evil) and pop up windows (annoying) but this one really gets me angry.
Again, how does one get this bad beharior to stop???!!!
Please help:crying:
I just went back to the offending page and several times it only had two instances of the ads link. I then went to Chrome and it didn't happen at all. I know there is evil here because it is related to advertising. Is someone posting hiding something here? Is the site doing this to me? Is it an attack on IE because of the anti microsoft sentiment?
Why Why Why???
I'm done. I'm hoping for some answers now.
Sorry about the rant. I have to use IE because it is what my non technical wife is used to and the always there bookmarks on the left are important. We also have land line becasue she won't give it up.
Ummm. Don't think your in the right place dude. You'd be better off searchin ms support or at least using a windows forum. This is Android!
But to try to help, sounds like a browser hijacker, or malware. You need to run scans with malwarebytes, spybot, hijack this, anti-virus....you get the idea.
Sorry I can't help you more than that. Good luck

I've run my AV software MS Security Essentials. It only happens on this site. I first wrote to the website forum and received zero answers. Since this site is populated with very tech aware people, and I visit this forum (I now own a S3) almost exclusively, I thought I would try here.
I know that it is off topic, but since it only happens here I thought I would try here next. I also have a request in the Chrome forum as to how to get the left side bar bookmarks there.
Thanks, I hope it doesn't get deleted until I at least get some answer. I won't post here on this subject until someone asks me to qualify my question.
If you haven't already, download and run malwarebytes. Its one of the best and can find tons of stuff that regular AV can't.
As for bookmarks, if it comes to it there are utilities you can use to back them up. Then uninstall/reinstall IE.
You can also import bookmarks from/to chrome.

You have a virus or some serious malware.

While looking for another solution (to another problem) I found your post. The same thing happened to me today on this site.
The problem is not your PC, nor your browser and is not a malware issue either. In fact, it's from a script that is specifically designed to disable the browsers' back button. You see, the back button does not generate any revenue towards pay-per-click and/or similar schemes. Click-throughs, however, will...
Chances are that one of the page ads loaded the script (usually java) and set a cookie as well (to prevent one from replicating the problem).
Closing the browser window is about the only way to get around it. Holding the pull-down for the back-button only shows numerous versions of the same page.
Other browsers have plugins that can prevent the script from running in the first place and/or block the ads entirely.
If it keeps happening then you should contact one of the Forum Mods.
Hope this helps.

Can't delete or move unless we happen upon it (like I just did) or you report it. Not like we have filters that send us PMs whenever someone types Delete or Move. Doesn't work that way, fellas. Sorry

At OP, if you are still having problems with the site, got to the main XDA page and flag an admin to check out your issues. Plus you could search there and if no results pop up or no one else is having the issue, there error could be between the chair and keyboard. If you want this to remain open, it is your choice but you will have better luck in the main XDA section, rather than the SGS3 section.
Shoot me a PM if you want it closed. If no PM by morning my time, then it is gone.

Switched all options to friends only then back to everyone. Even logged out an cleared cache, still dont work for me.
I think there's a bug in NomadSpin's profile. There are no other sections visible underneath "Mini Statistics", not even empty ones, which I don't see on anyone else's profile. I would try the "I want to report a technical problem with XDA Forums or Portal" form to be found here. Hope this helps.

xda forum pages reloading when interacted with in chrome?

So this is a pretty weird problem here.... I've noticed that whenever I'm browsing these forums on my Note 3 (it also seemed to happen sometimes on the sgs3 as well) I will run into this problem. What happens is when I go to a page that lists threads or forums, so a device's main page, the main forum page, or a forum itself, the page loads fine but when I actually try to interact, be it zoom in so that I can see things easier, or scroll down, or even click a search box, the whole page will begin to reload. Then once reloaded, half the time I can use the page without it happening again (all though hardly ever on the sgs3) and the other half of the time it would just happen again. The only way to keep it from happening that I found is to simply load the page, then when I go to interact with it I just do so near the top of the page so that if the thing starts to reload then I can quickly tap on the x button to stop it. If I do this then it won't bother me again like that on that page. I can scroll or type or whatever. But as soon as I go to another forum, device page, or even the next page of the same forum, the same thing , will happen.
Does anyone know why this is happening and any way to correct it? Is it an issue with chrome itself, as this only seems to happen on chrome, but my issue there is that I like chrome abd o especially like the way my bookmarks settings and passwords are shares across my own personal devices. So any ideas to fix this? It's driving me nuts! Oh and yes I know I could use the app but I'm just not that fond of it. I've even bought the premium one to support the forum a little but I'd just rather use the browser. Thanks for any help....I'm sure some others are experiencing this issue.

This can be caused by extensions or settings requesting pages in the background. This feature is called "prefetching" and requests links before you actually click on them. It's fast for user experience but hammers the server. You shouldn't be hitting the 429 rate limit unless there are a lot of requests coming to the server.
Me too, I only go to the forum a few times a day and get this error every time?
It's getting that way, it's not worth the effort.
Doesn't seem to be any fix for the issue, or, am I missing some thing?

Disable prefetching in your browser, this "feature" causes the browser to load a bunch of pages in the background. On a busy site like XDA we rate limit pages to prevent abuse, imagine if everyone loading a page actually loads 20 pages in the background.
Tried the 3 main browsers on my personal Windows 10 laptop, connected to my S9 hotspot. The problem happens on all 3 browsers when I try to download 1 file (CyanogenMod for Note 4 https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=19462)
Tried my work laptop on my work's network connection, same error in both FFox & IE11 on Windows Server 2012.
Tried on 2 different T-Mobiles phones in the Chrome broswer - same error.
Seems like the "429 rate limit" is crap on XDA. I haven't been on this website in years - kinda sad to see such a silly configuration problem causing so much grief for users.
Anyone know a different source for the 2nd newest unofficial CM for the Verizon Note 4 (the latest release fails to boot - stuck on CM logo)? I really really want/need it. Thanks!

Me too... but only if I click one link too fast after the former one. My personal solution: I hold my horses! And then it doesn't happen any longer. Just about 3 - 5 seconds between the clicks are sufficient.

That's what I tried to do as well, but still kept getting the error. What started working now is if I open any of the forums and get the error, I just click on the reload button in the browser, than the page loads up. Everything seems to work though in the XDA forum app.

XDA Forums keeps logging me in??

I'm experiencing a strange issue with XDA and it's forums. I'll click the XDA forum link on my bookmark bar (Chrome or Opera) and I will be auto logged in, so that's great. But if I click to go to any different page in XDA, it keeps re-logging me back in instead of remembering that I just did that.
Does anyone know a fix for this as it's quite annoying.
Thank you
Do you allow cookies by XDA?

I have already reported this issue on December 13th directly to the admins, I didn't get any answer, so I bumped the report internally just now. I will let you know if they answer.
Thank you for that Wood Man.

They replied to me this below:
That's a limitation of our API...everytime you load a page, it has to "reach out" to our API to figure out if you have new notifications. But the team here says they're working on a fix to store this info locally so there is no delay :highfive:

Thanks for the follow up. Did they mention if this was a new thing as I have only started to experience this issue a few weeks back. But all through last year, this wasn't a problem, I'd log in and it would not ask me again unless I logged myself out.

They didn't mention it but I can assure you it started when the new header has been updated for 2015 themes. I have tested and this login issue doesn't exist with other xda themes, e.g. 2013 theme.
Edit: the new forum header has been changed for 2015 themes at the very beginning of December (around December 5th)
Same here... Logging in all the time. Very annoying.

XDA get you get this fixed.. I hated this annoying bug! It annoys me to the max.
Edit: disabling Pricavy Badger & uBlock didn't fix it.
I think you should completely wipe out your browser history and delete cookies too. Re-launch your browser and check. It should be working fine.
Does anyone solve this problem?

So I wiped browser history and deleted cookies and relaunched both browsers.
Still experiencing the same issue.

Then you might have to re-install the Browser. Make sure to save your bookmarks in a file first.
I also have this problem and can confirm that changing the theme from 2015 Dark to 2013 fix the annoying "Redirecting..." issue.
Hope that it will be fixed for the Dark theme, too, because 2013' looks so old now!

This issue should be now fixed for 2015 theme. At least it's now OK on my end.
