App Transfer? - Droid RAZR M Themes and Apps

Does anyone know of an app that can be used to transfer games/apps to an external hard drive? Or any way in general to do this? I heard of SD partitioning but im pretty sure it needs a flashed rom which im currently stuck in trying to get since Razr M doesnt have a recovery mode i can use. (I already tried Safestrap and it has no luck for me) I have already tried Link2sd and App 2 SD. Any other ways to get my games/apps to my sd card? Im running Jelly Bean 4.1.2

Razr M does have a recovery, you get to it by holding Power and Volume Up when it's turned off. It's useful if you need to reset your system, since you can use the Razr M utility here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249773 to flash the official 4.1.2 system.
But you shouldn't need to mess with the recovery to transfer games or apps to an SD card. I know that the native app2sd command in Link2SD doesn't work, but the symbolic link does. All you need to do is have your phone rooted (which the utility can also do) and put a second partition on your SD card, which is fairly straightforward. The Link2SD FAQ page has a couple of partition managers for each OS listed.

Im kinda nooby to the Whole android thing since i just recieved my phone like 2 weeks ago and ive been really adapted to the IOS software. But i was thinking of making a partition on a new SD card, Like 8 GB or something. But i was wondering if the stock 4.1.2 Firmware i currently use, will it be able to use the effect of the partitioned SD card?

Yes, you'll be able to use the partitioned SD card. I don't remember if Link2SD requires the partition you make ext2/ext4 or what, but you'll be more than capable of using it, as long as your phone is rooted. The utility I linked in my first post can do rooting if you need to root your phone.

Yeah my phone is rooted already. Will i be able to partition my SD card through ROM Manger? I've seen a couple videos about it. And also to Flash CWM or TWRP ino my device, my bootloader has to be unlocked correct?

I don't know what the features of ROM Manager are. It might be easier to do it on a computer, but there might also be partition utilities for Android. I really couldn't help with that. And yes, to change your recovery you need to unlock your bootloader. All of that can be done with the utility.

Alright thanks man! You've been a great help! i just got a 16 Gb SD Card and im going to partition it sometime in the future. Thanks a lot mate!

really, are you able to revert to original state?
managed to install custom rom with apps2sd on it and its working after 3rd attempt thank god! Apps2sd aint working on the rom either though (Pays-ROM Desire with Sense v1.4)...dont know whats going on.....wonder if its cause its an ext4 extension?.....
My advice to anyone is to NOT install APPS2SD, just wait for an official FroYo build to be leaked and installed on the Desire. It's full of issues at the moment.

A2sd works fine, but it has a lot of downfalls. here are some examples:
not easy for beginners
Sd cards have to be in the device to boot
Cannot access apps with sd card mounted
Access to apps can be laggy due to card transfer rates
Etc....
If you guys are new to android, you're probably in the "download everything" phase. It's not realistic to keep every single thing. Be reasonable and you should be fine.
A2sd will be a thing of the past once 1gb+ roms become the norm.

Or when FroYo is released
I still don't know how they'll manage to get APPS running from a FAT partitioned SDCARD?
How will they manage to make the Sdcard usable for apps and readable by Windows and other operating systems which don't support ext2/3?

Correct me if Im wrong, but the only reason you have to use ext filesystems for A2SD is because that is what the 2.1 expects??
I can't see why you would need an ext filesystem for the APK files. The 'special' permissions on apps are not provided by the filesystem. Maybe cache and app data would require some level of security, but at least the APKs should happily live on FAT32.
Fingers crossed! I hope they sort something out.
Excellent advice, eViL D: I was a bit nervous about trying and Android phone in the first place but took the plunge due to the fantastic reviews on the Desire. I absolutely love this phone and I managed to root it without any problems. Fortunately I read about the A2SD issues before I installed it. Whew!!!
Being a complete newbie to Android, I am in the 'keep everything' phase but am starting to realise that there are a lot of apps that I simply don't need and probably won't use very often anyway. I reckon that if I find that I need them later, then I'll install them then. I've gotten rid of a number of apps and am really happy with the phone as it is. For now, I'm going to leave well enough alone. Will definitely keep an eye on the A2SD issue more out of curiosity than the need to use it.
I really wish I had the knowledge to help solve this problem and wish everyone who is working on it the best of luck.

To ROOT or not to root?

Just got my desire friday. It's awesome! But the lags are killing me! I'd like JIT, SetCPU, power managment, cool themes and better music player, that's all! It should be easy, just to hack android to get access to ROOT...
But seriously, I don't want to lose any settings and apps I've set-up. Also the process is complicated, and there is nothing like "one click ROOT access". Although I already have Android SDK(for testing purposes), I am maybe just a bit lazy
So what do you think, to root or not to root.
had to bump so fast!? is here anyone reading this?!
Desire forums seem kinda dead today. Everyone's probably got the World Cup fever lol
I personally would say no, but that's my opinion - I wouldn't wanna risk bricking my new device, I should also say though that I have no previous Android experience, so I don't know about you. So I'm waiting, hopefully an official release isn't too far off, and if my carrier doesn't release it quick, I will be goldcarding
I would go ahead and do it, even though the above poster stated that there is a strong possibility of bricking your device, this is true, but there have been recent developments made for this kind of issue - there are now complete guides in the ROM dev section detailing how to unbrick your device, or even run recovery from your phone without connecting to the PC lessening your chances of bricking it, and there is a Recovery mod also, so I would say it's safe to go ahead and root/flash.
Ok il'll try it, but i have some questions:
Will I lose any data or applications? I can't backup, I have 1gb left on my hdd.
Will I have to do factory or soft reset after flashing to custom rom?
Does flashing relace or "update" the system?
Is desire really having the CPU clocked at 1ghz or is it 720mhz like in HD2? Will overclocking it to 1ghz make the battery last less? How much then? Can you overclocking the graphics chip?
Thank you in advance.

Yes, if you attempt to a flash a custom rom that includes Apps2SD/A2SD, then you should backup the data on your SD card. The reason for this is because, with many (if not all) custom roms, excluding the Froyo roms, come with Apps2SD baked/cookef into the rom, requiring you to partition the SD card (which will also format your SD card, wiping everything) after flashing a custom rom. new rom then this will remove all data and apps, but nothing will be deleted on the sd card. I suggest you try backing up your sd card data to some storage media before attempting root and flashing to another rom.
You will notice that before flashing the rom of your choice, it is advised to wipe storage, cache, etc before flashing in recovery mode. After flashing, you can always perform a hard reset if you like, especially if you encounter any niggling bugs.
Yes, flashing will replace your stock rom image with the custom rom image.
You can flash Richard Trip's modified kernal, which allows you to perform undervolting and overclocking of the processor to run at faster or slower speeds. Overclocking will result in better performance but drain the battery quicker, Underclocking will save battery life.
Please read the second link in my sig for an in-depth explanation for rooting, flashing, and Apps2SD.
Note: if your phone is network branded then you will also be required a Gold Card and have an additional Micro SD card.
Note: if your rom comes with Apps2SD preinstalled, then do not install Apps2SD, only partition your sd card after flashing thr rom while still in recovery mode.
The process is:
Backup
Create Gold Card (if necessary)
Root
Place rom in root of sd card
Boot into recovery
Wipe everything
Flash rom in recovery
Partition sd card in recovery
Reboot
Restore backup to sd card.
That's all just too complicated, why is there no wizard application for it? I may make one, but it's still too complicated.
Can't you just open up cmd and type login: root pass: root?
To be honest, it's not too complicated, daunting at first, but when you read the nimbu guide (see my sig for Windows only method) for example, it makes perfect sense and it easy to follow. Just try it step-by-step and you will do it no probs.
All you have to remember is...
Dont install Apps2SD if it is already included in the custom rom you want to flash.
Create a Gold Card only if your phone is software branded. If it is generic, then you will not require a Gold Card.

Just to add, for the Gold Card itself, you dont need to buy a large capacity sd card, even a 2GB one will do fine.

And most importantly I don't want ANY lag. **** driving me NUTS!

Ok matey, that sounds absolutely fine. You could even go for a Class 2 SD Card. I currently have a Transcend 8GB Class 6 but to be honest, I have not really noticed any differences in speed with the applications.
Yes, it's not so bad when you read the guide first, it's looks a lot at first but it's just because all the steps are appropriately broken down, which makes things easier to understand. Give it a stab and if you get any problems, just post back here and I will help you out, if necessary.
Good luck

Yes, you need HTC Sync installed (this is on your sd card or you can download the latest version via HTC website). Also, ensure that you have USB debugging enabled (Menu > Settings > Applications > Development).

Hi All,
my 2p worth (for what it's worth)
I rooted my desire and installed apps2sd and all was going well, until I discovered dust (a lot)under my screen and it has to go back to voda.
As there still isnt an RUU for voda uk I have had to install a generic wwe rom. It took me 6 hrs, and the fantastic help I received at modaco, to unroot and reflash the rom.
To say it was brown trouser time is an understatement lol
The only reason I rooted was for apps2sd and seeing as FroYo is going to include that facility, I don't think I will root again in the future.
I'm not saying don't root, but just make sure you can unroot if you need to.
I hope this helps?
Daz.
I rooted the same day it came out but only because i wanted paid apps available. And now its there i definately do not wanted to unroot

Head over to my site, MyAscend.org - there is a custom ROM called Icarus that has all the bloatware removed, apps2sd, OC kernal, and more. It's really to install, you will just need to use an older version of clockwork (not the one that is in ROM manager). There is full instructions, just go to the developers post about the ROM. he released this rom on my site, and its a very good one. My phone is soooo much faster now!!!
You can't have apps 2 sd on stock ROM btw.
rom
really didn't want to do the rom thing i guess i will just have to wait for the update from everything i have been searching supposibly it suppose to be out by end of month if not then i will do the rom deal i feel it would be pretty crummy if they dont do an update i have had cricket service almost since they started and this is the first brandnew phone i have bought from them cause it was a droid so if they dont fix i will be very and i do mean very upset with them so cricket lets get the ball rolling

Possible to install Android on SD card?

I'm wondering if it's possible on a native Android device like the Evo to install and boot Android from the SD card?
It might brick the phone because its from a totally different device, and I doubt youll be able to use data or some of your hardware because of the radios. But you can probably root the device you want the android from, make a nandroid, and if it had an sd card switch it to the phone you want it on and have it rooted so you can flash the nandroid

I don't think the post above mine is what you had in mind. I'm assuming you're thinking of running Android from the SD card like was done with some of the old WinMo devices. The answer is that it could be done in principle, but I don't think anyone's done the work to enable it on the Evo. There are a couple use cases where it could be useful (AOSP user booting into Sense to update PRL). But I don't think it's been something that's gathered much interest from the devs.

This is being done on the Nook Color currently. However, I don't believe the Evo has the capability to boot from sd card, whereas the Nook actually gives boot priority to the sd card. It's pretty slick actually. My wife's Nook is bone stock internally for reading, but running CM7 & Honeycomb from an 8gb sd card.

Problem with roms and memory

Usually Samsung sd-cards work best with the HTC Desire. Try getting a class 6 or class 4 sd-card.
Ok i try to get a new sd card with that specs, but i like to know if the sd card can be the only factor to my problem, because i try to install many roms like leedroid, cooldroid v9, mildwild, and every rom show me a differente errors as leedroid get stuck in a reboot loop, cooldroid revolution v9 get stuck in the black htc logo, mildwild show error of the kind "sorry the process com...." with almost every app (this happen with 2 or 3 roms i try) the rom i used before this problems is oxygen 2.3.2 and work fine without no problem but now i install this rom and every time a install an app the phone makes a quick reboot and show me the welcome message of the rom every time, i search for a solution or explanation but i dont found anything similar to my problem, maybe someone have any idea of what happen whit this??

If no ROM with an a2sd script works properly, then, yes, it's an sd-card error. You could try many other ROMs.
Oxygen doesn't have an a2sd script by default.
Just in this moment im trying to flash a rom with a different sd card but i have a problem again im going to flash the cyanogenmode 7.2 because i have this in a previous installation and i like the rom, but now i install the rom and get stuck in the htc logo, i really dont understand what is happen with my phone apparently took own life and is doing what he want :crying: im going to try with another rom
thanks
Well this is my update, i wipe/format everything, cache, dalvik, data, system, boot, sd-ext i mean everything, and now i can flash the rom that i want, the other thing is i get a 2gb sd card and i use this with and ext patition of 512mb just for try, and all work fine, in this moment i already install many apps and use the mounts2sd, the apps are use around the 200mb.
In conclusion my big problem is and always be the sd-card. :silly:
thanks to everybody for your help, i want to make a guide for newbies like me who have this kind of problems
Hi, this is my new update, i purchase an micro sd card kingston of 16gb class 4, i put in my phone create the sd ext partition of 1gb and flash the cyanogen mod 7.2, everything works fine, i install the mounts2sd and configure it and work fine too with this i can install many apps without the memory problem. But my really issue is the phone is working really slow i never experience this before, i open the camera and get stuck, open the browser and get stuck, the only option when i open something and get stuck is hit the home key and send me again to the desk screen.
Any idea of what happen? i think at first is was a problem of speed in the cpu but i see in the configuration is fine, i also think if flash to many times in a row the phone can damage anything?? I dont know what to do in this moment.
Thanks.
