On Friday my One X suddenly stopped working so I took it to the repair shop to see if they could do anything but they had the same phone with the same issue so didn't know what was wrong. I took it home and tried to switch it on a few times but failed everytime until around 6pm when it came back on (everything including apps, music, videos and pictures had gone) so I set it up again like you do when you buy a new phone and then it worked perfectly until 1am when it died again.
Yesterday I took it to another repair shop and they had a look at it but couldn't find an issue so I went home and it still refused to turn on. Then after leaving it for a few hours I had another try at turning it on and it came on and has been on ever since but I'm afraid to use it in case it freezes and turns off again.
Most probably a hardware issue! Try factory resetting the phone from Bootloader if you are on fully stock rom..
You could try running a ruu but I don't think it's software related at all...

I'm not really sure how to do any of that

Your on fully stock rom right? You haven't rooted your device?
If not, then press power button + volume down key together till the Bootloader screen shows up..
From there you can navigate by your volume keys.. You can factory reset it from there!
But the problem is, if your phone again stops whilst in process, it might screw up...
Well try the factory reset... If that fails, you will have to send it to htc I'm afraid...

can you provide your bootloader :

Thanks, I'll try that.
How much will it cost?
Wow major hardware failures lately !!!!
I've got a similar problem.
The unit will over heat, then touch screen non-responsive.
Then a forced reboot and can stuck on the "ONE" screen.
Anyone can advise on troubleshooting?
My unit is not rooted and using stock rom + updates including recent Peoples update found on HTC site.

Yeap, did a software/factory reset and still the same. Saw a possible solution on another thread : forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859339
I got it back from HTC service centre and the solution they carried out: reflash ROM.
I might as well have done it instead within 10 mins, instead of waiting for 4 days to get my phone back and see the same problems all over.
I'd wait to see if there's a 4.2.2. coming to HOX, then think about adding heat sinks on the chips.
It seems to be working as normal today, although it's a bit juddery and it crashed once at around 11am.
Strange considering the other day it wouldn't turn on
Since my last post the phone has deteriorated. At the start of the week it was crashing numerous times a day so thought it was Opera Browser's fault as I used that all the time so I uninstalled it, but the issues continued until last night when it crashed and wouldn't go past the "HTC - quietly brilliant" screen for a while so I managed to get the HBOOT screen up a few times and pressed recovery but it got to the homescreen and then crashed. After a few attempts it finally managed to work again but the battery was low so I left it to charge and went to bed.
Woke up this morning and the phone was dead again so I took the sim out and put it in a very old phone. Whilst using the old phone I realised that the One X had come back on and seemed to be working fine so I assumed that my sim was causing the problems but then it crashed again. After more attempts at trying to get it to work I decided to do a factory reset but that failed too.:crying:

Hey Guys..
I have a Desire here in my Hands with a strange type of Brick.. (at least one I've never seen before) ..
It just does not react to anything at all. The battery is charged and I tested with another cell to be sure that is not the trivial cause.
No Bootloader, No HTC Logo, No reactions at all..
Did happen while flashing a Froyo 2.2 Rom + Radio + App2SD (from the xda forums) via ClockworkMod Recovery but I wasn't there to witness the actual Flash.
After flashing the device hung desperately in a screen with the robot in front of a box with an arrow .. looked like unpacking or so, but wasn't doing anything at all for at least half an hour.
Then battery removed -> Brick.
Anyone got any Idea?

I suspect you removed the battery whilst it was flashing the radio. This is insta-brick territory and as far as I'm aware there is no cure other than sending it in to HTC.
Regards,
Dave
If you can access fastboot as opposed to bootloader you might be talking failing that back to HTC it goes
if your phone can not turn off whilst holding either volume down or the back button then yeah it's a brick, send it off to htc, just say it overheated and wont turn on again

The battery was removed after flashing and rebooting.
Installed in the following order:
32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04.zip
LeeDrOiD_V1.2b.zip
942_desire_froyo_a2sd-signed.zip
every process seemed to work normal, no error happened.
Then rebooted the Desire and the "Box with Android-Bot" Screen appeared.. this hung for 30 min or more when I could not think of any other solution than removing the battery to reset..
After this -> nothing.
I suppose as you say it has to do something with the Radio ROM..
Been coming from OpenDesire 1.6b - every flash ran perfectly up to this point.
Damn, I think this one has to go back to HTC.
Is there any possibility to unbrick a phone thats not responding at all?
Could HTC be aware of the modifications or will they really just go with the "overheated and won't turn on again" explanation?
Thanks for your help so far guys!
Yea, the little Droid with the box thing is during a radio flash and you should never pull the battery during that as it does result in a brick.
Can you reach fastboot as mentioned up above?
..tried pressing the "back" button with the power button and the vol-down button together with the power button..
even did the "insert the battery while holding the button" method..
I don't think I can get the thing to Fastboot..
But I will look further into this and try..
..
Has anyone had a Radio Brick and sent this to HTC before?
Is the repair covered by warranty?
Do you guys think they even get this is no real HW failure?

yay!
you know, even one post of you telling me it went allright for another guy is a big relief..
EDIT: just wanted to let you know I tried invoking fastboot via usb and the android PC tools..
just keeps waiting for the device.. and waiting ..
..will analyse USB traffic in general to conclude if there is a little itsy bit of life left in the phone, but I think this is a dead end too.
thank u all for ur help i have managed to unlock the phone as described

Is there a point to unroot the phone, come back to 2.1 ruu to find out or maybe the phone need to be send back for repair?

It's a damn common problem on Desire. Also i have the same problem. When the phone try to connect to 3G network go in crash. Also i tried more times full wipe, hard reset, RUU. Nothing. The issue is HARDWARE. The only way is the substition og the phone (or of the motherboard).
Good Luck

Probably you have bootloader 0.80
Try with stock ROM 1.21.XXXXXX
It's was ok for me
My Desire would soft-reset at least once daily on the stock 2.1 ROM. Switching to Cyanogen has fixed that. Which I was surprised to find.

I think someone should put this info into the sticky topic, there is nothing to mention that you need this specific ruu to unroot 0.0 bootloader...
I will test the phone now to see if the reboots are still in th case...
Could anyone who send their phone away tell me how long would take to get the phne fix in uk? can they provide a replacement or up to us to bother?
Ta
I've noticed that mine will reboot constantly after I flash a new ROM.
However, I don't think it's the flashing that is the issue. See after a wipe and flash I usually sign into Google to get sync my contacts and calendar.
Since 2.2 the phone tries to automatically download apps from the market.
If I'm using HSPA (3G) to download while the phone is plugged in and charging I will 100% of the time get constant reboots until I physically remove the battery.
Even then, if I remove the charger and try the phone will keep rebooting. I usually end up having to charge the battery while the phone is off then remove the charger. It will then usually work with no issue or random reboots.
I've tested this when I'm using Wi-Fi - Never a reboot issue.
Also tested using extensive 3G (soon after flash) without charger plugged in. Phone will sometimes (maybe 25% of the time) go into a boot loop with each reboot occurring within a few minutes of each startup.
It's no secret that the phone gets hot when using 3G to download a lot of data. For some reason this is compounded after each flash.
I use syspanel to monitor battery temps and in the situations described above where the phone starts constantly rebooting the temps are around 36c - 38c. I'm not exactly sure because it reboots before I can get accurate temp.
I question syspanel accuracy because it feels bloody hot! Temps are normally usually around 22 - 27c and it feels cool to the touch. Hard to believe 10c can make that much difference.
Could this be a hardware design, like how CPUs will throttle once a certain temp is reached to prevent damage? Or maybe thermal paste (is that even used in phones?) not properly applied to some component on the PCB.
Perhaps others can comment on their battery temps. Sounds like that's the issue if maps and navigation (data + battery intensive) cause reboots.
Also, as mentioned by someone else I can't remember (sorry to the poster) after I update or restore Launcher Pro my battery drain becomes ridiculous (I've lost 100% in 4 hrs). Quick reboot after update or restore solves the drain.
Now the phone is running stock rom and radio,
Tried google maps today, and it only last for about 2 min before reboot, when the phone is in normal usage like calls and texts I never had a reboot,
Must be a overheating components, like you said thermal paste or something.
Tonite i will give them a phone and the courier to pick it up.
Do you think guys is worth to mention about mainboard? that will need to be replace or just mention overheating issues and constant reboots?
Do they provide a replacement unit for the time being?
Thanks all

That's exactly the issue I had - could replicate a reboot within minutes of Google Maps use. I also believe this to be a heat/paste issue, as the unit got incredibly hot (on one occasion almost too hot to pick up).
Mine was replaced as being faulty (with Virgin in the UK) after I recited several forums and a google search to the operative. You might be able to get this with Three if you push for it but Virgin are the only ones I know of actually replacing the handsets (FYI thier callcentre staff seem to know thier stuff).
I will miss my desire Courier will pick it up tomorrow and God knows how long it will take to get it fixed!!
Customer Service was excellent so far, the guy even said that this is actually quite a common issue with Desire( too much power inside such a small device)
Hopefully I'll get a new motherboard!
Thanks guys for all your help! Now is the time to start up OLD grandpa Sony Ericcson for the time being...
Reboot with GPS and Charging
Hi
I have send my desire for repair, because it reboots every time i use navigation and charging at same time. Navigation alone dosn't reboot.
I tried to reinstall, but HTC would let me have the file to try to rewrite the ROM.
I try to times to clear the phone several times, but now i just wait to see if they will find the problem or just rewrite the ROM.

try to reboot pressing power button for 10 seconds, if it'll not work, it can be hardware problem, as i understood you haven't unlocked it, so you can send it to htc and they will repair it, or if you can, you can change it by yourself,
have you tried starting in bootloader and factory resetting?

I have the same problem now. Using it completely stock, the screen doesn't turn on. Well.... Except for the times I visit the Vodafone shop to get it fixed....
Their first reaction was a defect in the screen, so they ordered a new one. I brought it yesterday again and it is now in for repair.

hey guys
I had this problem a month ago, i know its frustrating.
anyway the only solution is factory rest from boot loader and flash RUU (worked for me)
the first time i had it, i did a factory reset, all my pics music were gone, phone went back to normal( stock, locked)
after a day the problem appeared again, second rest.
flashed RUU and the problem is gone. thanks god i have been using my HOX about a month science that problem and every thing is working great.
im sure its a software issue and I recommend every one to back up their files(pics, music)
just flash RUU and good luck

My colleque has the same issue with his One X.
It started with suddenly everything on his screen looking "zoomed in", so everything double size, looking ugly as a mofo, and not usable. After locking the sceen and unlocking again, it was fine.
Monday suddenly also screen didn't want to turn on anymore. Did the hard reboot for him, and it worked again... Untill he locked his screen and wanted to unlock, same issue.
Also, that time when doing the hard reboot, screen didn't turn on at all. Did another one, and worked again.
He's now sent it in for repair, this definately sounds like ahrdware issue, even full reset through bootloader didn't help.

I have the same problem right now.
It started last week when I was using Flipboard and suddenly everything started zooming in and stuff (same as mhulsegge above). It was resolved by locking my screen and unlocking it.
Last night, i've been getting the black screen when I try to unlock my phone. The touchscreen still works but the screen is just blank. It turns on if I keep locking and unlocking, but it's getting annoying.
My phone is an international One X (duh) bought in Hong Kong and I'm currently living in Canada so it would not be possible to send it back for repairs. Plus my phone is rooted and I am currently using the latest MIUI ROM (2.9.21). I have been using an app called "Sleep" which tracks your sleeping patterns. It requires you to place your screen face down on your bed when you sleep and the accelerometer will track your sleeping patterns and wake you up at the most optimal time. I assume that for the accelerometer to work the screen has to be on, so I am wondering if this can be a screen malfunction (overheat or overuse) problem since the screen has been on for so long (every night when i sleep for around a month).
Since sending it back is out of the question for me because of where I am living right now and I have voided my warranty, I am downloading other ROMs as we speak and seeing if it is a problem with my ROM. I will keep you guys posted.
-edit- I have tried factory reset and reinstalling my ROM (with a full wipe). Still doesn't work.
It´s probably not your rom since I use CM10 hand have the same problem and others have even been running stock and had this problem. The only one who seems to have solved this (at least in this thread) flashed RUU, so guess I´ll go try that now...
Would be great to hear if anyone else has solved it, and how!
edit: This has to be a hardware problem, if I push on the screen it starts working! Its like something is loose, and when i press on the screen it gets connected again.

Good tip, but I tried a gentle two-fingered push (zoom pinch) and the backlight turned itself on with very little pressure, certainly not enough to flex the screen. I believe that it is a state issue related to zoom, but will try again and report if the issue returns.
Screen black after replacement lcd display unit
Hi,
My HOX touchscreen was broken, the touch and everything was still working. I ordered a replacement lcd display Unit and replaced the complete display and touch. After replacement the screen is completely black but the phone still works. The touch buttons on the bottom still work and i can use the volume buttons. I replaced the lcd display unit very carefully and i am sure nothing is broken etc. So the touch is working but the screen is black. I tried 2 display units and both show me a black screen.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Did i forget to do something during the replacement?
Please, i need some help with this issue.
OneX has too much issue with Screen . WTF with HTC?
Hi!
My problem is that when I wake up my screen, its black but its responding to input. The screen works when starting the device, but when pressing the power button and then unlocking it like 10 minutes later, the screen stays black. It responds to input, but no picture on the screen. This problem occured today when running IceColdJelly ROM, but I've already run an RUU and are currently on stock, but the problem still exists.
Anybody knows what can cause this?
I remember experiencing the same on a JB preview rom, the only fix would be to hard restart(holding power button for 10+ seconds) and switching it back on.

I believe the only way to get it fixed is replacing or repairing it. I wish you luck and hope it works out fine for you mate
Cheers

Wait so this issue is the BSOD(blank screen of death?) how come mine went away after relocking and flashing RUU? I always assumed it was the JB rom I was using. And trust me on that rom I faced it at least 3-4 times which got really annoying. And since I anyway had to relock, I decided to go stock. After going stock, I used it for a good 5-7 days and no BSOD.

Yeah, the strange thing is that I can have the screen on for hours. But when putting it to sleep and then waking it up the screen stays black but the buttons on the bottom lights up. I bought it from the carrier 3Sweden so I can only hope that they repair it and not HTC.
And BTW, I'm writing this message from this mobile.

Hi there, this is my first post, i didnt want it to be like this but i have come to you in desperation.
I was excited about 4 hours ago to realise my phone was getting an update saying it was going to imporve battery life etc..
Well i let it do its thing while it was downloading, i went to check after an hour or so and it said the software had been corrupted or something along those lines, either way it had to start the download again.
It was about bed time when this happened so i chucked it on the charger, fell asleep, woke up and it was doing something on a kind of screen i had never seen before, black screen, obviously showing that it is processing the update(i was a little tired from waking up) i think i remember taking its time maybe longer than it should have been.
I went back to sleep woke up about an hour ago from now and checked my phone and the screen would not turn on, i think the charger cable had fallen out from the phone because it is loose and does that some times.
So i placed the cord back in and it didnt seem to respond with the red led coming up for a while then all of a sudden it worked for some reason, but was flashing. i suspected this was because the battery had been sucked dry. So after a while the led stopped flashing and i pressed the power button, sure enough it powers up straight away to the HTC - quietly brilliant screen. And thats that, end of story. It's stuck on that screen WTF?
I have been through forums like these interested in changing ROMs and so on but it all seems so complicated i never even bothered, so obviously i am a noob, but i dont think there is any reason for this to happen other than sh*t luck.
Can anyone help us out?
Your better off sending for repair unless you want to start unlocking the bootloader etc.
Reboot your phone in bootloader ( press PowerButton + Volume down at the same time) you will get to a screen with various lines, look factory reset, navigate that menu with your volume keys. Hit factory reset you should get . See if it fixes it.

Well did it work? before you say that long thanks
Thanks for your help, unfortunately, the factory reset didnt work.
What happened when i first did it, the update screen came up like the first time but still ended up freezing on the quietly brilliant screen.
I'd be willing to unlock the bootloader, i really dont want to send the phone away for a third time. Why didnt i get the Galaxy S3!?!?!
I hate to ask, can u point me to the right thread to do that, there seems to be a few but they seem to have different purposes.
Thanks again.

If you wait a day or so, the RUU will be released for your region now that the OTA has been released.
You'll be able to fully reload your phone - this is all HTC do when you send it for repairs and you can do it in a lot less time.
At the moment, HTC may even reload the 2.17 software so you may still have the problem again when trying to load the OTA.
Thanks all for your interest.
I spoke with customer support and they told me exactly what i already had done, factory reset through hboot.
After that was a no go, he told me i have to send it back to the point of sale, so they can flash the software?
Where can i find this ruu once it has been released?
I'm pretty sure the updates all say to not have the phone plugged in when updating.
