Root stock mc6 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Anybody been able to root with a simple apk?

It will never happen.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app

Never say never. It may never happen, maybe. It hasn't happened yet, for sure. But "never" is set in stone, like Moses n stuff. True enough, OS's aren't likely to come prerooted anytime soon and manufacturers aren't likely to carry out warranty coverage if every dough brain with a cell phone went willy-nilly through their binaries ... then expect a refund once they foul up the works Not likely to happen, yep. Not necessary, yep. But NEVER say NEVER. What's so damn hard about using a computer to root a phone?

Well is there a way to odin kernels?

Why would u ever need Odin to flash a kernel? U could use Odin to flash a custom recovery and from there u can flash anything u want, just be sure to only flash things compatible with ur device, otherwise things get ugly lol

OTA CyanogenMod?

I know its a dumb question and will never happen but I've always wondered why we couldn't have OTA updates for a rom, say CyanogenMod. Why couldn't we like get a notification of a new nightly or release and then accept the update and everything is done, with the rom downloaded, a backup made, rom installed, gapps installed, and phone re-setup exactly how it was, like an OTA from sprint? Now don't go saying Rom Manager because I know you can kind of do that from the app but it really isn't the same as a real OTA from sprint.... you guys get what I'm saying?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
ROM Manager Premium has that option but the devs would have to initiate it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Personally I think it would take way too much effort to set up but would be wonderful for the end user. I don't see it ever happening due to the amount of bandwidth involved.

But you have to manually check it, he's saying a pop up notification like the OTA's. I've never seen that and I have Premium

Right, it only checks when you log into it if I remember correctly.
Forced ROM OTAs would require your phone to send out a notification that you are still on that ROM and waiting for an update. It is not like Sprint's servers where they know what phone and what firmware you are supposed to have. Then the developer would also be responsible or at least answer for borked OTAs like Sprint is. Not practical at all.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yeah I see what your saying. Would be a cool thing though, have everything the way you had it just with the newer rom with just a press of a button!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Cm7 nightlys with rom manager premium would pop up a notification every day a new one was out, I would click and it would download, click again and it would reboot and install. I think it even gave the option to backup first.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yeah but did it automatically restore you phone to its previous setup; apps, texts and everything? That would be the best thing, and that's what I was talking about. I see what your saying though.

Anyone heard of it or tried it?

Probably automates the old galaxy s process of doing it yourself. Dont think its compatible but would be nice.
You want to test it for us?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Not sure how it's going to work.
Has anyone ever tried this before?
This tool was last updated in August, 2011.
I think sfhub would be the best person for this kind of tool if he want to make some extra money!
It would be a way to give a tar of a custom ROM. If it worked of course.

We used it on the Galaxy S Mesmerize/Fascinate and it did work. But I'm not sure about this phone. They're some major differences in the file systems between the two. As long as the app captures the file system the way it is then it should be fine. I honestly would test it but I've already had one brick replaced and I don't think I will get lucky again if I brick it a second time.
I will be watching this thread to see how things pan out... very interesting app

If you want to go back to completely stock unrooted, with stock recovey, you will need to use Odin to flash a stock rom. Why are you wanting to stay away from Odin? It's even easier to use than CWM.

When it comes to this phone Odin is your best friend and ONLY way to restore stock recovery. Look here and read a few times you shouldnt have any problems http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359 if you rooted your phone you shouldnt have any problems unrooting it.
I think flashing back and using the zip file is quicker I done it had to send my phone back under warranty and got my replacement everything worked just fine they never knew I was rooted but what do I know

Although I agree with your answer to use ODIN, I just wanted to point out that GalaxyS2root is a legit site run by XDA Senior Member Zedomax. He roots phones and flashes ROM's for a living. Peace.

If you are that afraid of doing it, pay someone else to do it.
That way if they brick it (they aren't), you can sue them or something.

How to brick my Tmobile S2

Hi everyone
Is there a way to hard brick my S2?
For testing purpose. Would appreciate
Feel free to PM just as well if the topic is not good here
update: forgot to mention, I can't use any USB type of flashing. My USB is not working for some reasons. So anything from recovery or type in shell should do. thanks again
Well, had to do a double take to make sure I was reading this thread correctly :what: Easiest way is to flash a ROM not intended for our phone. If you read all the "Help, I bricked my phone " threads, they usually flashed one for the I9100 or SG3. Now, you don't plan to use this info for malicious reasons, right? :sly:

Interesting. It's worth a shot OP. Worst case, it fails and you uninstall. If it is successful, you can install mobile odin, then get the latest gb27 tar, and money. While you're at it, you will have to flash a cwm custom jb kernel, since you're on ics, and, MO won't flash modems, you'll need a jb modem to use data on gb27. Download the zip though of the modem . Good luck, let us know how it goes.
