[Q] Applications hogging the RAM - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

I'm running CM9 by Arco and the main problem that I have is a shortage of RAM. I don't really want to swap roms, but what I would like to do is remove applications that I'm not running from the RAM. Facebook, for example, isn't set to provide any notifications, isn't running, has been cleared from the recent apps, and is still taking up 30MB of RAM. aCalendar is another - it's one of two 3rd party calendar apps that I run and is the only one that is constantly taking up ram.
Any ideas?
I looked into an app that would periodically clear out the RAM, but this took up 30MB of RAM itself! So there wasn't really any point. What is the reason that Facebook is constantly taking up RAM?
Edit:
DSPManager is another example, and so is 'Google Messaging'. Can I do without them?

Greenify is what you are looking for, but it only hybernates installed apps, not system apps. So for example facebook and your aCalendar. However some of the system apps you do not need like for example the dspmanager or google talk, you can deactivate in settings->apps.

Greenify seems absolutely spot on so far, thank-you very much. Noticeable difference in performance.

Greenify is still doing a great job. Is there a way of blocking DSP manager and Google Messaging though? I presume that Google Messaging is only used by the Google Hangouts app, which I never use.

Don´t know about Google Messaging but the apps you don´t want tu use you can simply deactivate in Settings-> Apps. Click on the app you want to deactivate and launch the deactivate button. Just be careful about deactivating system apps and google a bit if it´s save to deactivate a certain app. You for sure can deactivate CM-Updater, Google Talk or Hangouts, the Apollo app if you prefer to use an other app and for example the DSP-Manager.
Edit: DSP-Manager can´t be deactivated this way. You have to use root explorer and either rename it by adding for example .bak behind it or to delete it. By using a custom Kernel with incrased audio volume, you will probably anyway not need the DSP-Manager.

[Q] should I use task killers?

I have about 68mb free on ram and I noticed that useless apps are still running (e. g. Facebook, office suit, and other useless apps). I try to force stop them via settings but they still turn on by them selfs. Also, I think this is the reason why my battery does run out quick since theres apps runnimg in the background. Should I get a task killer e
No.
Using a task killer is like playing god, let the phone kill the app.
And anyway, apps usually start again and consume more ram after you have killed them.

Keiran is spot on. Try un-installing apps you don't use (be careful with system apps) and you can also stop apps from running at boot with something like Autorun Manager
Remember to make a nandroid backup before you do anything, just in case it goes wrong

No! Free RAM is wasted RAM.

Task killers do more harm than good
Facebook and other apps will start anyway after "killing" them, maybe itz time for root and delete those apps from autorun?
Wybazgrane za pomocą Neo V w tapatalk 2.
I feel that the reason you use the task manager is only to fully quit programs/games which you KNOW will just eat up memory for no good reason, and won't reload and take up more memory. I've done this when using apps such as OnLive, where I want to kill the program compeletely so it doesn't freeze my game when I exit out. Yah, I could have ust quit the program completely, but sometimes things come up and..... I also use it to kill processes which OBVIOUSLY are causing the phone to hang. In short, I use it as a KILL command and I make sure to use it sparingly. I think of it as a super force quit option. If you think of a task manager as that, then you should be fine with one. I understand that people think that having almost no RAM free is the right way to go, and I somewhat agree, but I feel that there are times when you should free up the ram so you can replace a bad thing with a good one. I don't want my browser, whcih is lagging all over the place for some reason to take away ram from my game, my keyboard, or my voice recognition (I use it a lot). Nope, I could be better served killing the browser completely and instead loading up some programs I use more freqently, or perhaps just reloading the browser in general.
Beez thats what I meant. I just want to use it to only disable the autorun. Is there app that does that? My phone is rooted.
There's an app called Android Assistant that has an option to disable apps from starting up on boot, and so does Rom Toolbox. Rom Toolbox has a lot more options, but Android Assistant is easier to use.
I like using the Autostarts app. It costs a buck but it works wonderfully at removing programs/processes from boot

[Q] How to disable apps from running in RAM

Hi,
I've been using CM9beta2 on my Wonder for a while.
Now my phone it's starting to get too laggy so I'm trying to free up as much RAM as possible (having around 50MB available doesn't seem enough!).
However, many apps are always running, even though I disabled everything I could in the settings.
For example, google maps keeps regularly eating 5-10MB RAM, sometimes google Play too, etc...
Is there a way to keep apps out of RAM?
How do you do it?
The only solution I find otherwise, is to get the apk, and install apps when you need them, then uninstall them immediately...

Thanks, but... wouldn't Auto Killer Memory use more battery (or RAM) than having the apps running?
I mean, having smth that checks every few minutes running apps and that closes them... then they reopen again, and the Auto Killer closes them again, and so on... doesn't seem the best solution!
Am I wrong?
Tx.

It really depend , but I try it and actually getting better result .
With CM9 rom there is a way to disable the apps that you don't need , just go to setting menu, chose manage apps, click the apps that you don't use , and click disable . But you have to make sure the apps that you disable WILL NOT effect other apps that in use . :silly:
Hi...there are two ways to do what you want to do....
The first is as you say to delete and re install the apps as you need them.....
The other way is to NOT delete them, but to FREEZE them. (This is the better option, and the option that I use) there are several apps that will do this, titanium backup (paid app) and Gemini app manager (free) to name two.
I use Gemini and it does EXACTLY what you are asking. You have to be rooted in order to use either of the apps I mentioned....but if you're using a custom rom, I guess you already are. Both apps are available in the Play Store, and there's an online tutorial on how to use Gemini....just Google it.......
Hit thanks if this helped

Gradual slowdown/memory loss until restart

This problem occurred on CM10 and PA 2.99, the only two roms I've tried. I'm running hellboy's latest kernel. I am overclocked to 1400 mhz. zram is set to default.
When the phone starts, I have about 100 mb memory free and it runs great. I have removed all widgets from my home screen except Poweramp's remote.
However, after a few hours of use, the phone will run out of memory. I understand that is how android is supposed to work: all the memory is intended to be utilized. Unfortunately, when this happens on my phone, my music will turn off, programs will close, and apps behave so slowly that android will keep asking me if I want to force close them. When I look at my app manager of running apps I can see that I have no memory free and different apps are being restarted, usually 2-3 at a time. However, once they are restarted then several different apps start restarting themselves. The result is that the phone takes 5-10 seconds to switch to any action, and I also believe the battery is drained very quickly by this behavior as well. This does not stop until I restart the phone.
Is this happened for everyone else on the HTC one V and they just don't mention it, or am I the only one?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Disable them! You could simply tap on them once press the 'Disable' button.. When I was on my Stock ROM.. unrooted.. I disabled many apps which made a big difference
if u overclock u will have battery loss, and and keeping apps widgets causes the app to run in the background removing the widget may speeden up, i face kind of ur same problem, but the ROM is in the beta stage so, i cant complain much, and android is intented to reboot atleast once very day, to clear the dns and other caches

Here are my running processes:
Settings - 29 mb
Maps - 7.2
Maps - 10
WhatsApp 40
Facebook 20
Messenger 28
Google Services 11
Keyboard 33
CACHED:
Trebuchet - 35 mb
There is nothing there I could disable without making my phone useless, unfortunately.

Yes, but this happens after only 8-12 hours of use.
Facebook?
Whatsapp?
You have a memory hog somewhere.. Mine is working perfectly fine and I believe everyone's One V is working as mine... so it is not a rom/kernel problem. It can be a hardware problem OR an app that hogs your memory.

Since everyone uses Facebook and Whatsapp, I don't think that's the problem. What do you use you listen to music? It might be Poweramp which is becoming a hog at 30-40mb while using it.

Hmm... I remember my phone getting smooth after disabling Maps... And WhatsApp is taking 40MB?? :what: mine takes just 12...! make a chat history backup, uninstall and then reinstall WhatsApp. Then check the amount of RAM it takes... And why you using Messenger when you already have Facebook? Jeez.. I chat using my Facebook app very easily... Don't use other apps for chatting.. Messenger is taking away 28MB! And yes! The keyboard! What so you do with it? Mine takes just 15MB when I use it!!

Because I frequently need to type in Chinese, a language not available on PA, I installed multiling keyboard. It is actually the lowest memory consuming keyboard of all the ones I tried. I will uninstall messenger as you suggested and also reinstall whatsapp, thanks.
edit: seems that gokeyboard has a lower memory footprint at 18 mb. Anyway, for the time being it seems that I've got around 100mb free, which is good!

Well, the problem persists :/
While listening to music, poweramp shuts off due to lack of memory and it takes 20 seconds to switch apps. This is on a clean wipe install.
Running processes are currently only:
settings - 28 mb
maps, 7.2
maps, 8.7
whatsapp 8.7
facebook 25
google services 8.6
keyboard 17
Cached:
trebuchet
poweramp
yet I have no free memory and the phone is a sloth.
I notice when the phone is first started up for the first few minutes, there are 10+ cached processes and numerous running processes- yet the system overall still has 100 mb free and it runs like lightning.

Greenify - Amazing for the I9000.

My SGS used to need the cache clearing every few days as it gradually slowed down over time. It also had quite a few wakelocks.
I installed Greenify from the Play Store and It makes my SGS consistently buttery smooth and after a few days there's not a hint of slowdown. It has also removed almost all of my wakelocks, greatly improving my battery life.

LEt's see if this works.
Im not that happy with it, my swipe keyboard is still runing in background, and whatsup and viber are fully turned off if you "greenify" them (meaning you need to open the apps to see if you got new messages. There are better apps for rom control

Your not supposed to greenify apps like Viber & Swipe. They need to run in the background to function properly.
I use it, and its worked better than any other program like it.

if u prefer socializing over performances, this app wasnt good idea, but sure, greenify hibernates selected apps making no cache building in RAM.

[Q] Removing Google Apps & Default Apps

I'm just wondering if removing some of the default that come pre installed google apps like gmail, playbook, play games ...or even the default calendar apps is going have any impact on the perfomance on the whole phone system or even the battery life.
It's kinda irritating to see apps that's in the app drawer that i dont use....plan to uninstall them off with titanium backup

if they aren't running and never run (in the foreground or background) they won't impact battery life. if they are running you could stop them or freeze them with titanium. the only other difference they make is cluttering up the app drawer and taking up space in the storage.

Removing them, if you never use them won't make any difference at all, you might as well use the "hide" feature in the app drawer.
Removing some LG apps might make a difference, as some of them run even if you never actually use them, but the google apps will only run if you actually open them.
On a side note, I never understand why people buy android phones (especially top of the line, flagship phones!) and then remove almost every trace of Google from them, isn't it kind of defeating the whole point?

That's the beauty of Android over iOS: you don't HAVE to use Google apps if you don't want to. Being able to uninstall any app should come by default on all ROMs.
I remember the big trial Microsoft has lost when it tried to force all users to use Internet Explorer in Windows. In Europe, they had to add it optionally, and provide way to remove it / download alternative software. Something similar might force Google to do the same in the future (and Apple, LG, Samsung, HTC, etc.)
As far as removing unnecessary core system apps, I've always used Root App Delete with no issues. It does require root but works perfectly to remove any unnecessary apps you don't want. Once I receive my G3 I plan on immediately rooting the phone and using Root App Delete to get rid of any bloat I don't want.
