Hey is is me, or did we use to be able to send MMS while connected to WiFi and in a call?
I swear that I use to be able to send pictures while connected to to my home wireless and being on the phone until EL29 came out. I use that function a lot, but I'm starting to question myself. I've flashed multiple ROMs to make sure I was just going crazy, but it seems that every EL29 ROM I flash the MMS just says sending until I get off the phone. Then after that my 3G icon pops up with the WiFi icon still there, then the picture gets sent. I SWEAR it didn't use to be like that.
I still can send mms when on a call
I am pretty sure that I can as well. Ill have to try tomorrow and let you know for sure.
oh man. geeze. please let me know. I wanna find out what's going on
im not sure about the phone call part,
but even if your on wifi the phone still turns on 3g to authenticate thru sprints picmail servers before sending it
I can answer this one. If your on 3g and on a call, no you can't send mms. When you're on a call it knocks off your 3g to make the call. Now if you're on 4g, then you can send mms because you still have your 4g connection running. Another thing I would like to add is back when the first Evo and Epic came out, sending mms wasn't supported over 4g till Sprint made some changes on how sending mms works on their network. However one thing I haven't tried is to see if I can send mms thru just wifi with 4g and 3g off. It has me a lil curious because I know it didn't back then but they might had changed that when they changed it to allow sending thru 4g. But it could also just work on their networks only so idk..
Edit: I just put my E4gT on hotspot mode and disabled network data on a Sprint iPhone and Evo3D, both failed at sending. Soon as I enabled their data back the messages got sent. So you still can't send mms over wifi it relies on falling back to 3g. The way I recall it is the 3g comes on to send the mms then drops once it sends, but since you're on a call it won't do that.. Hope that helps lol

right, uses 3g/4g to authenticate thru picmail servers, wont do that on wifi itself. no sprint connection=no picturemail.
Connect to wifi and send a picture (while you have a signal) and you will still see the 3g icon come on for a few seconds while it sends.
That's really weird though. I really use to be able to send mms while on the phone on wifi. I swear that changed on EL29. but oh well maybe i'm just tripping out

I think you're trippin. Hey maybe you should Odin back to a previous software to test it out and let us know! Lol

OK so I Odin'd back to stock rooted EL29, and guess what?
I CAN send pictures while on the phone and connected to WiFi. the 3G icon doesnt pop up. it just sends. I knew I wasn't trippin. This function seems to have gotten lost among all the modding or something. But yea on a stock ROM, you can hold a conversation and send a picture...you just cant take the picture while in call. but yeah.
Sometimes at home can't get damn 3g signal. So I got wifi how do I send messages using wifi???? ****'s very annoying.
Text is a voice service it doesn't use data at all. If you can't text making/receiving phone calls must be hard at your home as well. Over wifi Google voice or a similar app from the play store would be your best bet
Yes, you can. The best way to do it would be Google Voice, but there are other apps out there capable of it. The way the carriers handle it (in this case Sprint) is over the network... GSM or CDMA. 3g is always an extension of the mobile voice network... this is why you typically cannot make calls and browse the web while on 3g (although Sprint has found a way to defeat this with the Viper and the Evo LTE, though a second chipset). 4g runs on a different band than 3g does, which means it doesn't affect your calling / text capabilities.
I know that is more info than you asked for. The long and short of it is that you need an app designed to run on Wifi, rather than mobile data, but it is possible.
+1 for google voice. I even use it to text from my Nook which doesn't even have 3g.

G voice.. or complain to sprint and get a airave and hook it up to your wireless router and have signal in your house .. or get roam control (assuming your rooted) and roam when your home and use your wifi for your data needs and sure youll be fine since wont need to worry about sprint and data roaming

Uh, slvrap1 already stated this in so many words above. We're discussing workarounds now. And yes, Google Voice is the easiest way to go if you're using an Android phone.
A lot of the information in this thread is wrong...
SMS is actually a function over 1xRTT (just like voice calls) not EVDO (3g)... This is why you can recieve sms messages while on a phone call but not get other data services at the same time...
You never make a phone call or transmit SMS messages over EVDO, it is a data only connection protocol..
This is why SMS are limited to a certain number of characters, because they are actually a hack of the control channel in 1xRTT communications...
Simplified version:
REAL SMS is a hack of the control channel between cell phone and tower. It has nothing to do with a data connection so it can not be transmitted via EVDO, WIFI or any other data connection...
Note: When I state REAL SMS that is because services like google voice and others are all VOIP connections that use data connections to transmit messages and phone conversations... There is character limit in VOIP texting but they impose it because you can send it to a REAL SMS and that has character limitations built in..

Correct. Texting has nothing to do with 3g. You can find an app that can use 3g or wifi to text o stead of the network. This is what my friend uses on AT&T so they don't have to pay for text messages. They use the network.

That actually just sends the message via the data connection to a server, which then relays that into the carrier's system and is then transmitted to the recievers phone via the 1xRTT control channel... They aren't actually texting a phone, they are sending an instant message to a server that then knows how to convert and relay that into a text message.
Note: I use 1xRTT because we are on a CDMA2000 system... for AT&T, T-Mobile and other GSM it works on their *2g* voice connection... I forgot what it is called at this moment...
Use roam control at home, Verizon probably covers you better. 1x roaming is free other than your minutes

Well let me say this. I was at a music festival in March. Had some signal bars but could not make calls or texts. Incoming or outgoing.
When I was in a certain stage I tried again (text) they all failed. I tried to turn on wifi and found an open network! Tried to text. Success!
So in my experience I say yes! Anywhere else I could not text. So when I needed to text I would return to that stage and connect to wifi.

More likely when you moved you connected to a less loaded tower, being connected to wifi was just a coincidence.

Well if you are connected to WiMAX or Wifi.. yes you can make a phone call and surf the web at the same time.. If you are on EVDO, the only way that is possible is if you have 2 cell phones... One to surf the web and one to make calls

Your experience is only coincidental... It is physically impossible because the SMS system is built on the 1xRTT control channel... It has nothing to do with the data connection in any way shape or form... It is a hack on the tower identification and protocol transmission channel.
It is like if you take out a frozen piece of meat, turn on the microwave and leave the piece of meat outside the microwave (never put it in the microwave) and claim the microwave is defrosting the meat...

Are you reading? He obviously cant text at home.. he did say 3g but probably doesnt know what HES talking about.. i think its safe to say hes getting NO signal since he is unable to send text messages.. thus want other options to send text messages which people are giving.. he doesnt care how the network works and how it uses 1xrtt and not his 3g radio.. he just wants optiong to improve him sending messages at home which no matter how we put it, theres only a few options we've already determine which is 1: google voice or other voip messaging app. 2: using roam control to make sure he has signal to send it regularly while roaming. 3: can get airrave and hook up to his wifi at home to bost his signal inside of the house. 4: leave his house and go walk around til he can send one lol 5: someone said theres apps which allow you to send it over data which then gets converted in the tower and sent as normal.. good luck OP! Probably already found a way just wanted to try and get the thread back on topic for ya lol

Google voice will only allow you to text over your google voice phone number... If you use google voice to manage your SMS and text using your phone number, it will still send it via SMS (1xRTT control channel) and will fail There is no alternative when you want to use your actual phone number except for utilizing the sprint web tool.. log into your account and send a text message from the web tool.\
Note: I am one of those people that will correct wrong information if i see it, even if it doesn't 100% pertain to the original post. IMHO it is the only way to ensure people don't start repeating the wrong information and exponentially make it harder to teach people the correct answer.
I saw some other threads on this but no fixes.
Is there a fix?
Are you manually disabling your mobile data when on WiFi? When its auto-disabled as WiFi comes on, it should re-enable long enough to send MMS unless there's a bug.
No, definitely not disabling mobile data. I couldn't on Android Revolution and now can't on the stock rooted IMM76K.
That's really odd. The mobile data should kick on, send your mms, then go back to wifi. That's how mine does it.
Mine sends fine... My mobile data never even shows kicking in

Mine sends fine as well over WiFi.
first i got to send my apologies to kootz (sp?) because i thought it was only doing it on their rom when i just happened to be i was on their rom the couple times it has happened. i thought cm10 didnt do it because immediately i would flash that and data was back. it happened today while running cm10. suddenly i have no data connection i can talk and text but no data. even after reboot no data no i can connect to wifi. what i did this time was go to titanium back up i erased the data for "input devices 4.1.1 blh blah blah" and data kicked back on.......anyone else having this issue???? i don't know if it's doing it on the stock rom as i have not been on it for quite some time.......anyone else??
even when i toggle data off and on it still stays off but the phone acts like data is off only thing that can be done is talk and text.
You can actually confirm that you have mobile network connectivity period?
As in, you're sure you can talk?
When I lose data from LTE -> 4G/HSPA+ ... then I lose everything. It looks like I can call, I have full bars, albeit no logo, but I can't actually place a call. I get the 'Emergency Calls Only' message, OR 'No Network Found' depending on Rom.
Either way, no solution....yet.
Also, I'm on Bell Network, currently running Ariel 2.08 Stock. (ATT-based I believe).

I have the exact same issue with my Telus SGS3. Even when running on stock ICS, even before rooting, I had the issue as mentioned above. I sent it out for repairs under warranty and Samsung claimed it not to have any faults and they just reflashed and sent it back claiming it passed all tests. I asked Telus to send it back again because it came back with it stuck on the Samsung logo. There has to be a solution to this or Samsung should at least fix it.

Was having the same issue and solution (use HTC's native messaging app). I just tried the fix that nycebo suggested and it worked. BUT, sending a pic was pretty slow. So slow that I thought it was going to fail (same symptom as when it was failing to send). Eventually it went thru and I'm also able to receive pics.
Hopefully, this resolves group messaging which is basically MMS as well.

As I mentioned earlier, group texts are handled as MMS's. Last night the M8 was put to the test. Had an issue come where the wi-fi was partially to blame. Group text consisted of 6 people with a sprinkling of pics attached. Some of their texts and pics were getting thru while some weren't. I was on wi-fi and there is a 4-5 bar LTE signal in my area. Wi-fi calling is set to cellular preferred. Not only did some of the texts not come thru but the ones that didn't were also separated out from the group thread. I hit the download link and nothing. No error message. Nothing. Just went back to "Download message". Granted this was on the locked APN. I switched to the custom APN. Still nothing.
This worked before so I try again. I turn off the wi-fi. BAM. All the texts of the separated out people start coming thru AND they get put back into the thread.
So yes, the culprit is wi-fi but I've had wi-fi on on my Note 3 and this was never an issue. Also, in the middle of the group texts, I swap the sim into my Nexus 5 using Hangouts with wi-fi enabled and there was no problem there.
I think the root cause is the way HTC's Android implementation is handling the switching between wi-fi and the carrier network. Seems to me the message should try sending via wi-fi and if that doesn't work use carrier network. I don't know enough about the protocol to say this is for sure the case but that seems to be a logical explanation.

Curious if this is still a problem.
I am getting a GPE this week, but I need to be on wifi only at work all day and get MMS/group MMS
GPE doesnt have the option to use stock messaging (I assume Hangouts only, which I have seen has known issues MMS via wifi)
Will I be able to get MMS/group messaging on wifi only (wifi calling enabled) ?
Use Textra until Hangouts gets this working ?
