I live in an area where I don't get great service in the house, so I rely on wifi calling to use my phone. As a result, I get several notifications which get in my way, and I was wondering if there's any way to disable them.
An ongoing notification that "calls will be made over wifi", and a notification whenever I make a call, in addition to that one.
The much more annoying one: my desk (where I often use my phone) is just barely in range of my router, although I still get 2-3 wifi bars of signal. It's a stable connection, but every 5 seconds or so the phone sends a notification (emits a tone and displays a popup) that I'm near the edge of my wifi range and the call may drop (although it never does).
On my old phone, an HTC Desire (also android), there was a setting to disable this notification (and even when on, it only came once per call). But I cannot find that setting in the S4. Hate to ask what may be a simple question, but after quite a bit of searching I can't find anything on this topic.

Sorry that I don't have your answer, but wanted to add I have this same question, and i'm on the galaxy s3, but maybe someone else will answer. I suspect this is a T-mobile "feature", because I have terrible cell service even though their coverage map says it should be great. And when talking to tech support a few weeks ago they were quick to add "have you heard about wifi calling?" . I had, but wasn't sure I had settings correct. They walked me through it, and yeah, every since then I have had that persistent message in notifications. I thought there would be an option to unchecked "show notifications" but I also did not find any.
I suspect, just a guess, this may be due to a legal liability issue if for example it was an emergency and you try calling 911 and it fails due to bad cell service, they would want to be able to say "were you calling over our network or over wifi?" WiFi it seems would let them off the hook if the call did not go through that way. They'd be able to blame it on "your internet service provider" and not t-mobile. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. ... you might call their tech support, be sure you get to "level 2" help by specifying you're calling about "my galaxy s4 device", then ask them: why does this notification stay on? It takes up space on my notifications screen"
Long press the WiFi calling notification, then press app info, and untick show notifications.

Hey guys apologies if this has been asked before just I couldn't find anything in a search.
I have a nexus with ics 4.0.2 and I have noticed it will make an annoying beep/notification noise while using mobile data (ie Google maps, browser etc). Its really annoying when I'm listening to music on the nexus and the track keeps cutting in and out for the beep/sound.
I have looked in all the settings and can't find anything which would disable the noise, though I don't know where to look exactly. I did have a mobile data cap in place but I have not used anywhere near what the warning or limit caps are. I have even removed caps entirely and it still does it.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Mind explain more on how to reproduce the beep, notification sound?
hard to describe haha. It has an ascending dual tone then a descending three tone like 'doo do... doo do dah'. Whatever it is its damn annoying!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
That's not normal... is it random? Or when you make selections or choices in apps? And specific apps? Why do you think its tied to mobile data?
It has to be another app sending a notification...
Haha... Then can u make a video and post it on you tube? So that we can have a clearer picture..
As far as I know, I enabled that feature when I was going to Austria for two weeks, simply to make sure I didn't roam/use any data (because that would cost me a lot of money). however at the time I had a HTC stockrom. I don't own a galaxy nexus but I think the general features of android remain the same. So go check your roaming settings, maybe that will help?

You could have just disabled data rather than using that feature though, y'know?
Haven't ever come across a setting like this on the Galaxy Nexus. Just going through all the settings now and see nothing of the sort.

I know, but I had an internet-bundle for 25MB outside my country. So I had it on, but it was just nice to keep track of my phone and know when it was going online.
Is there a way to disabled this notification? When I'm at work I don't have good signal and this always shows up.

Try this:
Check your roaming settings-
Mode: set to auto
Settings: all should be checked
Guard: NO checks.

Yeah I disabled the guard also and I still get the notification also. It's a minor annoyance for me. If it can be removed, good. If not, I'll live.

Ok so I have tried every possible combination of checking and unchecking the roaming settings to no avail, yeah I'll live, just frustrating that I am not able to stop it from popping up. Googling for an answer seems everyone that goes in and out of roaming has the issue. One forum called it a known bug in the software, if so maybe fixed in the next update
It's especially aggravating because I pay for unlimited nationwide roaming which apparently I'm not getting. Guess I'll call sprint tomorrow and see what's up. Gotta ask them about my airave anyway. Doesn't seem to play well with the s3.
interestingly enough, I haven't seen this notification in a while. Did it go away with LG8? I didn't change any settings here.
Yes its annoying. Have it too.
Yeah it's definitely not a check/uncheck thing... prolly a smali edit somewhere in framework... and yes it's still present in LG8

I don't mind.
What is the exact message it gives?
Here's a screen shot of the message. The exclamation point in the notification bar is due to the message. Thanks for your hard work.

this phone has a lot of annoying notifications. samsung needs to start putting a setting to disable some notifications.. low battery, lost connection, found wifi network, no signal, my dog took a poop, etc.. im constantly dismissing popups throughout the day.
I have solved this issue.

I can't tell if this was already asked as I can't search individual forums for some reason. Hopefully I'm not duping a question. Anyways, I've turned my wifi notification off in system settings->wifi->advanced->network notification but am still getting it on occasion, i suspect though not 100% sure, when there's absolutely no network available (ie underground). Anyone else? Am I missing another option somewhere?
I've seen that as well... I think it's seeing that there isn't a mobile network available, so it's trying to help you out. Not sure if I like it, but it seems to be the case. I think I saw a setting about automatically switching to wifi when no mobile is available. Perhaps that feature is doing it?

also when clicking on the notification while coming from lock screen, i dont leave the lock screen like other notifications. the lock screen is still there; and when i do unlock i finally see the screen. when i bring down notifications while in lock screen and see an email, and i tap it, it takes me to gmail.
I'm a long-time note 2 user and usually have no problem with settings. Out of
nowhere, my Note 2 started sounding a notification tone (first tone in the list)
and I haven't found a way to disable that notification. I think it's related to a secondary email
account... yahoo or Outlook perhaps. Tried the obvious options to turn notifications
off/on but nothing has worked. This thing is waking me up at all hours and disturbing
my lifestyle in general. The only way I've found to turn off the continuous sounding of the tone is to touch the top notification bar. Such a hassle. Any real suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

If only that were possible. With Android 4.3 the notification is for leaving and rejoining the 4Glte coverage area. For those of us that live on the edge of 4G lte coverage it makes for a long annoying night. I have emergency notifications that I DO need at night, but not the damn network change every 5 minutes.

UPDATE from SPRINT
I talked to Sprint. They have confirmed that many ppl are complaining about the constant "upbeep" and "downbeep" tones. I understand it is not just 4Glte/CDMS coverage change, but also Wifi and Bluetooth availability. They say Samsung is aware of the unpopularity of the issue and will have a patched version out very soon.
I have resorted to disabling 4Glte all the time and disabling WiFi and Bluetooth at night. this seems to be a reasonable short term work around.
Thanks for reading.
Sean
I've never had any notification tone for network/wifi mode changes. I'm not sure why the stock rooted MK4 ROM wouldn't have the same issue but it doesn't or this forum would be full of angry people. I assume you guys are on the stock unrooted MK4 Jellybean ROM? If so, I'm glad I told my wife not to allow the update on her Note 2. I'm currently on stock rooted MK4 ROM and have never had this type of notification. But I would hate it also.
With this all being said, time for you guys to visit the Note 2 Toolkit thread and get rooted! Just one more reason why people prefer to root their devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155
Once rooted you will need to ask ROM devs for help in removing the network notifications. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this with Root Explorer file manager app but you must be rooted to gain access to the file system. This is my only advice because I'm pretty sure an update will not come soon enough for you guys. Updates come from Samsung then Sprint sits on it for testing etc, then Sprint pushes it OTA. You can root and fix the issue in a few minutes or wait and pray for an update.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. And Sean, thanks for talking to Sprint about this matter...I'm sure that all the suggestions here will help others with the same kind of issue I've been experiencing. For me, it's a wait and see kind of thing in that whatever the change in settings I make, it could take an entire day or even more to verify success in shutting down this maddening interruption.
There have been days when, because of a setting I changed, my phone would not ring at all when a call was coming in even though the ringer volume setting was at 100 percent loudness.
The good news for me is that as of this morning, I had an uninterrupted night's sleep last night which, obviously, could mean that I've finally stumbled into a solution. But I am reserving the 'Mission Accomplished' party for when I am absolutely sure my settings are the way they should be. I hate big let-downs, especially when they follow great expectations and celebrations of euphoria.
BTW, the latest changes I made were done inside Facebook's notifications preferences. It seems the Facebook crew are on a mission to keep its members fully involved in troubleshooting the 'traps' they set for us. Kinda reminds me of Hunger Games.
Fingers crossed now...maybe I'll have another full-night's sleep, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
Thanks again to all who pitched in their $000.02000. I'll update here any more results that might be helpful.

Have to admit that rooting is very tempting...thing is, I live in a new area and have no 'guru' type friends here and I'd be concerned that I'd get myself in a corner and not be able to get out. I just don't know enough about rooting to trust myself with doing it to my only smartphone. For instance, does rooting wipe all data completely? I'd have to back up everything I want to keep? And how would I do that backup. Will the memory be re-formatted? How do I know which apps work and which ones don't work on a rooted phone?
Yeah, you guessed it...I'm an old guy...66...and fairly savvy with being a PC/smartphone user...but I haven't studied coding since the mid-eighties and don't remember what I learned about it then. Still, I'm intrigued with rooting my Note 2. Maybe someday.

DrDubner, the Rooting Toolkit I linked to above is very simple and straight forward to use and it has very clear and easy to understand instructions within the user interface. Basically if you can read you can root your phone with ease. Also there is no need to backup anything on you phone or sd card (although it's always advisable just in case) because the root process does not change, delete, wipe, or alter anything other than enabling root permissions on your phone and flashing an insecure boot image & custom recovery in which you do not have to ever use and will not be visible upon normal day to day usage.
BUT with this being said, I would highly recommend that you do some more homework FIRST and find out exactly which app or system process/app that is triggering the notifications BEFORE rooting your phone. It may turn out to be something that can be fixed without rooting your phone and either way you go about this, you need to know the exact cause of the notifications before doing anything.
Hopefully you can get more specific info about your notifications and post them here for others to help you better. Like I said, I've never had the network notifications that you described... on any ROM stock or custom. Perhaps it's not network notifications and mabye it's a system app or user installed app that is triggering these notifications? Keep us posted so we can get to the bottom of this issue much faster than Samsung/Sprint patch update that may never come.
Yeah I've never heard of this problem. Stock 4.3 and my phone never beeps for coverage issues. Idk to me it sounds like there's an app set up to continue reminding you of an unread notification. Like the Messages app reminder feature. Plus he did say taping on the notification bar stops it so that means one of those notifications on the dropdown is the culprit and when you tap on the bar it resets your notification (no blinking or sounds). Maybe it's time for a factory reset.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
I agree. It does sond like a repeat notification. The notification pull down should give you a clear indication of which app is giving you the notification. Double check notification settings within each suspect app itself. If you can't find it that way then uninstall suspect apps one at a time until you find the culprit. Facebook and other social apps would be a good place to start. Also check Sprint visual voice mail and your messaging notification settings. You might be surprised at the simple cause of this.

Was going to post this same question, I remember on the galaxy s4 they had the caller id app causing the issue, doesn't seem to be the case this time. Also tasker can't control mobile data on lollipop anymore, so that's out of the question.

I've seen that bussiness model before. I have a HP printer at work that uses 4 cartriges that cost roughly $180 (each) HP has set it so even if you print strictly in b/w, it still applies slight C/M/Y to the mix till it depletes the other cartridges...

I had the s6 edge before this for a couple days and this phone is similar from what I've noticed some apps require carrier data to provide authentication and some phones use both Wi-Fi and lte to download faster this phone does it at times it's just not really a feature to turn on and off yet like it is on the edge.
Sent from my LG-H811 using XDA Free mobile app
I've got the H815 and can not confirm this. I never had a phone that did this, save you activated that option within an Xposed module. I did this on my Note 10.1 2014 LTE because I wanted to check the connectivity strength of my carrier even when I had WLAN enabled. But out of the box? No.
On the G2 pre-lollipop, we could change the icon set and hide data icon when on wifi.
After lollipop, it seems to stick regardless. Annoying I know.
The only downfall of the LG is the intense amount of status bar icons. I really only used xposed to hide most of those and have centerclock. Need root first though. Not sure if xposed is supprted without a custom recovery yet. They disabled activation through the app until testing was complete.

Same to me, im on T Mobile galaxy S6, i just update mine to 5.1.1 and this anoyin bug start to show.
When im on Wifi the Data icon show up randomly:crying:
For what it's worth, I set up a tasker profile along with autoinput for when I connect to my saved wi-fi access points it would turn my mobile data off. Now it's not a smooth as tasker before lollipop, but it gets the job done.
That's a Verizon thing, same appears on my Moto X. Doesn't bother me, I'm always interested to see signal strength available even if I'm using data via WiFi.
This is how every Verizon phone has been for the past few years. This is intended and I honestly prefer it.
