Restore htc evo to factory after root

Ok, I really want to root my Evo and install a custom ROM but Im PETRIFIED!
I use to have a motorola droid that no matter what I did to the phone I could (even if it was bricked) restore it with an application made by Motorola. Because of this I had no problem playing around with Roms because I could always "fix" the phone if needed.
So my question is, is there a program that does the same thing for the EVO, where I can restore and unbrick the phone?
Also, can you recommend any custom ROMs to use? Preferably 2.2 if every thing works camera,wifi, bluetooth,4g etc...

To unroot you need to run the HTC RUU (ROM update utility) You just your phone into your PC and run the EXE. If you have questions about it look at this post.

On to ROMs the 2.2 ROM's are moving along pretty well, but they are not 100% as far as I know. As to what to recommend that is all on what you like. Look in the Dev section and find you one like and read about it.

I personally have not ran the RUU, but people have unrooted even with the latest OTA. I believe
I guess I am not understanding what you mean by if you install a custom ROM will it restore it... If you run the RUU it will put you back to a completely stock state even if you are using a custom ROM. Not sure if that was the question but it was an answer

Yes, there is a way to use the RUU to get you back to complete stock.
You will be fine during the whole process as long as you follow directions, and don't do anything crazy (for example, never do a battery pull in the middle of flashing).
It's fun, you know you want to do it. lol
And also, with the custom recovery, there is a way to restore backups you make along the way

[Q] Is rooting a G2 with GFree safe?(And what should I know before rooting?)

I am getting a G2 in the next few weeks and I'm coming from a rooted G1. I have been reading about the G2 and root ever since the first way to root it was available with VISIONary, but now it seems that we(the community) have found out that the old way to root was unsafe and "fake" and now every one uses GFree. I am planning to root the phone the INSTANT that it is out of the box, just gonna enable debugging in the settings then root it with GFree. Is there anything I should know before rooting with GFree? And how safe is it? Has anyone had any bricks with it? I'm not really a noob to cell phone modding if anyone is wondering, I used to mod Motorola's back in the day before Android was around, and I rooted my G1 the manual way. I already have ADB set up for my G1(the whole Android SDK rather,) so I'm guess that all I have to do is plug in the G2 to the computer and if needed, Windows will install the correct drivers automatically then I can root it with rage and GFree?

If you already have ADB set up you will just have to load the drivers for the G2 onto your computer, they easy way would be to just download HTC Sync to your home computer and when you hook the phone up the first time it will install the correct drivers, although the HTC Sync program wont actually work with the G2 because its sense based and the G2 is not it will still install the proper drivers for you. As far a gfree it is the safest way to root your G2, although I havent seen any bricks from the gfree method I have seen a few phones stuck in boot loops but usually theres a fix for it because gfree will usually get the phone to S-off stage before any problems arise.

Read the entire thread even if its long it will benefit you in the long run, if you run into any problems more than likely they have already been solved somewhere in the thread. I always read the enitre thread before trying any mods to my phone.

Not to be a debbie downer but you may want to consider waiting a little bit before rooting, unless there is something about the phone that makes it unsuitable for your use out of the box. You may have a problem with the phone, a result of manufacturing problems or damage during shipment that may not show up until you've used it for a bit. My original G1 died a week after I got it, I had to take it back to the store where they gave me a replacement right away (That G1 still works after >2 years of daily use). If your phone is unmodified you will have a much easier time returning or exchanging it if you need to. BTW I waited about 3 weeks before I rooted my G2.
The gfree method is indeed safe, the problem most people seem to have with it is getting ADB working. I have not heard of any bricks with the method, I personally used it on two different G2s (mine and my brothers) and my wifes MyTouch 4G.
If you are already familiar with ADB you are already ahead of the curve. Though even if you have ADB up and running you may well need a different driver before ADB can connect to the G2.
The process is pretty solid and there is a lot of info here in case you run into issues but I don't think that's likely.
BTW when you are at the point where you want to install a recovery you might want to look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902493 if you are a G1 user you are probably already familiar with flash_image.

Ah thanks guys! I'll just follow the instructions in the wiki.

Ok, I have some more questions, if I get stuck in a boot loop when I first root it with GFree then I should be already S-OFF so all I have to do is boot into fastboot and flash CWM to the phone then do a wipe and flash a good ROM? And if so, do I have to flash that new HBOOT that is optional in the XDA Wiki in order to flash the recovery via fastboot? And when I root my phone, I want to jump strait into CM7, so for my first recovery that I flash, can it be the new 3.0+ recovery? Also if I get stuck in the boot loop, can I flash the 3.0+ one then then wipe it and flash a new ROM or does it have to be with the old 2.0 recovery? Sorry for all the questions, I have looked some stuff up myself, but I just want to double check with someone that knows what he's doing or has done it before.

Yes you need to have the engineering HBOOT to use fastboot to flash your recovery.

Alright, then how would I recover from a boot loop if I just rooted with GFree? Because if I just rooted with GFree, I would have to reboot and it would then get stuck in a boot loop before I could even flash the new HBOOT, right?

LOLz, I rooted my G2 the night it was shipped to me, probably within the first hour after playing around with the stock setup.

How would I recover from a boot loop if I just rooted with GFree? Because if I just rooted with GFree, I would have to reboot and it would then get stuck in a boot loop before I could even flash the new HBOOT, right? Or with GFree, do you not get a boot loop? From what I have seen, people are getting boot loops if they tried with VISIONary or an older tutorial that uses Rage, as in not the one thats on the Wiki.

Yes, that is the tutorial that I am going to use to root my G2 when I get it, I just want to know if anyone has bricked with it or had a boot loop with it. Has any one? And when it says to install ROM Manager to get the CWM on the phone and do a backup, I just wanted to install the new 3.0+ version of it that DOESN'T come with ROM Manager so I can jump strait to CM7 as my first ROM, can I? Yes, after you successfully root your phone you can install CWM 3.0+ and then install CM7 if you want.

Ah alright, thank you! Sorry for all the questions, but I just wanted to be sure; I search everything I want to know before I ask questions. I'm coming from a G1 which is pretty old, you have no idea how excited I am to have a current Android phone that will actually run stuff smoothly, I just don't want to brick it when I first get it.

Can we uninstall HTC Sync afterwards? Will the drivers stay around?

[Q] stock update S-OFF phone

I've used the search but frankly, the vBulletin search still sucks after all these years.
I rooted the phone following this guide. Now my phone says a system update is available.
Since I would like to install it (my phone is still 1.34, I think. The latest version should be 1.72, right?) and installing a stock update onto a S-OFF phone is highly inadvisable (I've read), how do I go about this?
I have Visionary installed but it says the phone does not appear rooted, even though it is (just checked).
I'm sure there have been others with similar questions and I just couldn't find the right thread. If so, please point me in the right direction.

Why did you root your phone? There is no need to update your phone to the latest OTA update if you are wanting to install custom ROMs.

Because I was testing custom mods and wanted to go back to stock?

ahhh, I thought you had just rooted it. I updated the day after I received my new phone. I had problems with bluetooth (music wouldn't resume after ending phone calls) and wound up here on the XDA forums looking for answers. I ended up rooting my phone, installing CM6 and now CM7 and never looked back. There is no bluetooth switching problems using CM builds so I'm happy.

Thanks, that looks interesting. Now the only question: Do I need my original CID? And if so, how do I find it now that the CID has been changed by gfree?

That link is about a procedure to restore the stock G2 ROM. Since you seem to have a DZ ROM, I'm not sure if you want to flash a G2 ROM (though the other bits might be useful).
The 1.72 OTA update has been rootable for some time now, so you can safely accept the update if you want. But it might be easier just to flash the 1.72 ROM in its entireity (you can get it from the dev forum).
With SuperCID and S-OFF you should have no problems flashing 1.72.

Really? Then I don't quite understand the stickied warning thread that says to never, ever attempt that.
Anyhow, I gave the Virtuous mod another go. Since it has sense and 1.72 I'm thinking of testing this one out a bit more, before I go flashing stock.

Ok, I have a rooted HTC Wildfire S. No custom Roms or anything I think, I just used the RUU I downloaded from HTCdev to unlock my bootloader.
Well here's my question. Well not my question but why I want to flash.
I want to flash my phone because I want a fresh installation with all the original HTC Wildfire S apps/widgets so I can use it as a back up, then from there install/remove what I want knowing there is a backup. I stupidly didn't backup the first time, although there is nothing wrong with my phone at this moment.
Now:
1) Is the file in this thread I have to use to flash my phone?

2) When flashing, will I have to root again? First time was a piss take you see.
3) I used a clockworld mod, or whatever it was. Will that be erased ?

You most likely won't have root unless its a "customized" ruu. But its very simple to root again from the method i used which literally took me 10 seconds to root again.
You can go ahead and run the ruu but if root is removed, I can give you a zip to flash to give you root again. A matter of fact just download the zip from here at http://fs05n2.sendspace.com/dl/4a931031cb660f43df9c30ae5e737d64/4f557f3e25ecb39d/2l50jw/root.zip

[Q] Please Help! I've created a Frankenstein phone by accident

So here's my story. I bought my VZW HTC One on day one. Brought it home and immediately unlocked (via HTCDev) and rooted it before Verizon blocked the unlock the next day. So I am bootloader unlocked, rooted, and S-ON. Now here is where I screwed up in two areas. The first being that I think I have somehow over written the original stock recovery with my Frankenstein one. So the Frankenstein one is that I originally had an HTC Incredible 2 unlocked, rooted, and S-OFF and I took my last full TitaniumBackup from the Inc2 and restored it to the new HTC One. The problem with doing this was the backed up system files from the Inc2 were applied to the One and now it causes some strange crashes when using some of the HTC sense apps such as HTC's contact list. However in this strange setup most everything works perfectly and I've left it this way since that first day. The other annoyance here is that I keep getting reminded to install some of the OTA updates that have come out but it will not install them so I've missed them all and it stills keeps alerting me to install them.
Now what would I like to do from here? I would like to be able to keep root, keep unlock, gain S-OFF and start over with stock rom and be able to get the OTA updates (if possible). This way I can still get back to the backups I have made in Titanium, only this time instead of restoring all, I would only restore hand picked apps, leaving out the old Inc2 system files. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help me with step-by-step detailed instructions? I would greatly appreciate it.

I would
1) flash the signed RUU (not 100% necessary)
1a) Gain S-OFF using rumrunner (it supports ALL versions, so just download the correct one, I am assuming 1.10.605.8 as you said you missed the two OTA updates)
2) Once you are S-OFF, go into fastboot, and fastboot flash the stock recovery.
3) Now that you are S-OFF and on the stock recovery you may take the OTA (Or just flash a ROM such as Santod040's that is based on it, that's what you do when rooted, NEVER take an OTA just wait for ROM DEVs, but these two OTA's have been deemed OK and doesn't touch root)
I don't know a thing about Titanium backup, sorry.
Best to start fresh on the HTC One, IMHO.

Thanks so much for the response! This is very helpful. One question though, after getting S-OFF from Rumrunner you say to flash stock recovery. I'm not sure if it is still intact or not. Can I just proceed with flashing the ROM or is it absolutely necessary to flash stock recovery first?

#2 is not necessary. The RUU will flash a stock recovery.

OK, I'm not very familiar with RUU's. Where does this come from? A quick search in the forum yielded a list of a bunch of them. I'm not sure which one is the right one. To me they don't look any different from custom ROMs. Sorry for being a noob, still learning how all this works.

when you go into fastboot mode on your phone read and see what the radio you have... and based on that number you could get rumrunner and also you can get the right RUU i dont know if the RUU will relock the phone tho but i think you can unlock it if you saved the tocken in case you dont want to get s-off
