Using Franco Kernel. I like the color tuning.

"Best" kernel/rom/etc threads are not allowed on XDA, as such topics are purely subjective.
What may be best for one, may not be best for another
You'll have to try them out to know what's best for you.

how does one know whick kernel is suited to which ROM then? Or is it just trial and error?
For me, it's trial and error....I don't understand the jargon

There's no better benefits than experimentation and readings. Read the threads that contain valuable information and u will gain knowledge. Knowledge will be implemented to your experiments and thus u will have a better kernel combination in your disposal.

Sorry, but 'Best ROMs' are subjective, it depends on what you want and how it works on your phone. Best to try them yourself and make your own decision.

It's really going to vary from person to person. Try them out and see. Underwear is great but KT747 gives you more control through overclocking and undervolting, and more governors, etc.
Just so you know. The is no "best" kernel and no one can answer this for you. The reason being is that not all devices are created equally and these devices act different to different kernels and different settings. So for someone to tell you that you will get better battery life on either one would be a lie. You just need to play around with them and their different settings in order to find which one works best for your particular device.

Unfortunately there is no definitive answer. Everyone has different experiences with different Kernels/roms. So the best thing you can do is flash and give it a shot. If you flash The People's Rom, Get 3 kernel choices. Ktoonz is usually the default because there are several tweaks you can make in there (See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38932752#post38932752 for info) Most achieve excellent battery life and stability. Again YMMV depending on how YOU use your phone. So give them a shot.. see what you think.

you should read the threads and decide yourself reading user reviews and stuff and best option is to try yourself, new phone go start flashing all of them
my opinion - as of now all roms are doing great all are smooth, personal favourites - paranoid android and rasbeanjelly, combine it with ak kernel your phone will fly
