Huawei G510 - Root, Google apps and multiple languages - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi there, I came to this forum searching for an answer to how to root a Huawei G510 (U8951), remove Chinese stuff and install Google apps (Play, Maps, Gmail, etc.) on the said device and turns out I could not find an answer. At least partialy, as there was a link to htcmania, a spanish forum.
As most of you (and me) can't speak spanish, here is a quick guide to do all those things to your phone.
I don't know if I'm required to, but here goes a warning: doing ANYTHING from this guide can brick your smartphone, make it otherwise useless or void your warranty. I'm not saying that's a remote possibility, or if anything goes bad I can help you easily, I'm saying that's very, very likely, so if you'll follow this guide rest assured of these facts.
First of all, you must assure you have the right phone, as the G510 has multiple versions (0010, 0100, 0200) sold in different places around the world. This guide was intended to be used on a G510-0010, U8951 (Unicom version) of this particular smartphone. As far as I'm concerned, it does work on 0200 (Orange Daytona as sold in Spain), but I can't assure.
Secondly, you'll need a micro SD card, so if you don't have one you can't go any further. Buy one and come back.
Part 1: Root
That's the risky thing to do, so if you're faint of heart stop here.
Step 1
Download the boot.img from B165 rom.
https://mega.co.nz/#!G8QCRYDA!Wy1773Iw27m5OHpCVPfL5TpmH-o9olgV19TlCAvNsas
Step 2
Download UnlockRoot
http://www.unlockroot.com/download.html
Step 3 (optional, and G510-0010 only. If you won't update your phone's firmware, jump to step 5)
Download the latest version of your phone's firmware (B182, mine came with B168 version)
http://download-c.huawei.com/tcpsdo...category=cn&flay=software&downloadID=NDIzNjA=
Step 4 (optional)
Extract the contents of the firmware file, then locate the dload folder. Copy it to the root of the microsd card. Now you can apply the firmware update in 3 different ways: a) turn your phone on while holding both volume keys, it'll put your phone on update mode and install the update.app you downloaded, b) open the update app from the tools folder on one of your phone's homescreens, c) go to settings -> about phone -> system update. The update software will tell you the process will take about 2 minutes, but that's a big whooper. Here it took almost 15, and almost freaked me out meanwhile.
Step 5
Now do the same with the boot.img you downloaded (extract, copy the dload folder to microsd card root and use one of the three means to flash the firmware file). That time it'll be very quick.
Step 6
I'm assuming you have the drivers for your device. As far as I can remember (the cellphone now belongs to my GF) they're in your phone's virtual disk you get when you plug your phone to your computer. If not, Google Handset_WinDriver.exe and install it. Turn your phone on, go to settings -> Developer options and turn USB Debugging on. Now hook your phone to your computer and run UnlockRoot, hit Root, wait until your device shows up and click on it. Wait until it asks you to install some crapware and answer no (you can also answer yes, that's your choice, I'm not telling you what to do or anything...). Now your phone is rooted, with SuperSu and other software installed, and ready to the next steps.
Part 2: Google Apps AND multiple languages
To go beyond this point you need to have your phone rooted. If not, go back to part 1 and root your phone.
Step 1
All you'll need to download now are apk files you can find here on xda, so I'm not giving specific links. You'll need:
ES File Explorer (or any other rooteable file manager)
GoogleServicesFramework
GoogleLoginService
Play Store (phonesky.apk)
Step 2
Install ES File Explorer, then go to Root Explorer and remount /system as RW. Copy the other apks to /system/app. Now long press each of the files you copied (it can only be done one by one with ES), then hit properties -> change and check all the boxes in column Read, on the column Write check only User then uncheck all other checkboxes. The permissions will now show rw-r--r--. Restart your phone. When it starts it'll probably show you the "optimizing apps" screen and Play store will show up in one of your home screens (as this phone has no drawer for apps). Once you logged in with your (or created a) Google Account it will be able to install any app from Google play store and you can also enjoy the "amazing" Huawei store. Not finished, you can get really amazed with the WoStore (from Unicon's Wo 3G carrier).
Step 3 (kind of optional to most of you here)
If you bought this device on China or Hong Kong (as me) you'll notice it only supports natively Chinese and English. I'm not a native English speaker (as you can tell for my bad English skills and terrible spelling), so I just went to Google Play and installed More Locale 2, opened it and choose Brazilian Portuguese (my native language, in which I also don't excel).
Step 4 (optional... at least if you speak Chinese)
Once your phone is rooted, you can uninstall most of the apps that came with it, as most of them are system apps. Except for some things you can remove everything with a Chinese name on it. Some apps can be worth keeping, like QQ (an IM widely used on China), but you can also download it from play store.
Bonus Part: Common issues
(I'll update every time I find a new one)
After some days of use this cellphone showed two, easy to solve, problems. Here's the solution.
Issue 1: Google Stuff disappeared after some days. Also a crash warning pops out when the phone turns on and the play store just blinks when I try to open it.
Issue 2: On the Play store, when I try to download stuff, I get an "RPC:S-5:AEC-0" error.
As far as I can tell that's not a device specific issue. But luckily, in my case, both had the same solution: You just need to go to the settings, find the Google accounts, then remove them, add again and enjoy.

I have G520 - Anyone tell me which of these steps to follow (files to use) just to root?

I'm sorry, never tried to root a G520.

I notice you install the software/rom before rooting
Does that rom need rooting first or doesn't it matter?

Doesn't matter. But if you update after root it'll unroot your phone.

You shouldn't try a different model's rom. If you're stuck at boot you should try the stock rom http://download-c.huawei.com/tcpsdo...category=cn&flay=software&downloadID=NDIzMzk=
It seems to require you to get an account before downloading.

I tried rooting as per (installed B165 rom) and its now stuck on the splash screen
Is it dead now?

Flash the stock Rom and see what happens

And by the way, I'm just assuming that's your phone's stock rom. Make sure it is before flashing or you can damage your phone irreversibly.

I found a stock rom that worked and its back now - still now Google on it - do you know where I would find and international/European rom for G520?

I've just installed G520 USB driver and ran G520 Root program
The phone now has "superuser" app
Does that mean it's now rooted? |If I connect my G520 as USB drive should it look any different (folders/files)?
Does that mean I can now use a different Rom (which maybe includes Google Apps)?

Big thank you for taking the time to translate this information. It helped me tremendously and I now have a Rooted G510. for future reference to other readers of this post on my G510 under settings>system>About phone>system updates. this allowed me to flash the firmware with out doing the Hold Power and both volume keys. It made setting up the phone so much more easyier.
Just for reference my phone is the Huawei ascend G510-0010 this was a phone direct from china. Google play is now installed and the phone is working perfectly.

You can try, but keep a backup of your personal data and files and the original firmware, so if anything goes awry you can roll back. Also, keep in mind I never tried this on this specific model, so if you try it's risky and I will not be able to help you.

Hey Luke,
Been experiencing this problem ever since i got this phone, i've now tried every firmware update possible, no real fix as yet. I suspected it had something to do with the fact that i moved from a Nexus One with Froyo back to Eclair, but it sounds like you haven't done that.
Let me know if you find a fix... would love to be able to use my market the way it was intended.

I already had 2 crash/freeze with this kernel, it looks definitely unstable.
2 crashes situation :
1/ Pressing stop/play in xiialive lite
2/ listening audio in the standard mp3 player.
It crashed both time using the audio device.
I waited 1min the first time, hoping OOm killer or something else would kill a bad behaving process; without success.
The second time, i did not had time to loose :/
Very disapointing !
2 days after installing JS2 I'm still unable to connect to Market.
I'm unable to setup the Google login. Error is always no server available or something in that manner. Selecting clearing cache in recovery also did not help either.
Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
Thanks.
If you are not able to login to the market, then you will have a general problem..
Because you can even login if you dont have the market fix..
The market fix is just for secure apps...

[Q] Defy: A beginner's questionnaire!

I just bought a Defy and would like to experiment with it a bit. However, I have a few concerns:
1. I have Eclair and want to root using z4root. I have download ver.1.3.0. How safe is it to root and exactly what features will I get if I do?
2. Say I have rooted the phone, in case anything goes wrong can I revert back to the original? If yes, how? (Would be handy to know the steps beforehand)
3. When the official Froyo update is released, can I update even if it is rooted? If yes, after I update will the phone stay rooted?
4. Is it possible to install apps in a non-rooted phone using a PC? (I have Windows 7). If yes, please provide a link with an easy guide.
5. Is Step 4 possible for rooted phones?
These are for now. I am sure a lot will be added to the list.

Let me so how much I can help you,
1.) Using z4 root, should be completely safe. If it doesn't work it will just stp and you back out of it. You don't really get feature per sae, but you get get "admin" rights to your phone. The app superuser which is attatched the root gives you access to delete all the bloatware preloaded on the phone as well as capability to completely mod your phone. Androids are fun, but non compare to being rooted.
2.) If you use z4 root, I believe there is an unroot feature on there.
3.) You can definitely receive the official upgrade if you are rooted, the only way you wouldn't is if you flash a different rom, but even then as long as you flash back to stock you will get it. Altough, why wait when many of us are already running clean Froyo! By the time the official rolls out, we'll most likely be on 2.3
4.) when you say install apps from the pc, do you mean just using the .apk? If you find the apps online, you can simple connect your defy to the pc and drop that apk on your sd card and open the app from the phone, it will begin installation.
5. The way I just referred yes, I may be confused to the question.
If you root (which you should!) you should look into buying root explorer and Titanium Backup Pro from the market. These two things are a modders dream.
@jjp84: Thanks! So I guess I will root my cell after all!
6. To install .apk directly, does the phone needs to be rooted or can it be tried in a non-rooted phone?
7. Any good radio app which allows FM on loudspeaker?
8. How to get offline Google maps?
9. Any sexy compass application?
10. Is Motoblur with other launchers possible?
6. you can install .apk's on unrooted phones...just tick Settings/Applications/Unknown Sources. You'll need some kind of Explorer app to install 3rd party apk's. i.E. ASTRO or ES Explorer. Then copy apk to SD Card and install it with your preferred explorer.
9. I use Compass
10. I guess, yes. I try to avoid MotoBlur.

cool will try it

JRDNEM_U3_2.52.0 - May I ask why do you need this?

11. If I root it and install Froyo, will I still have Motoblur? Am I gonna miss any functionality if I upgrade?

14. I want to use the Nexus One live wallpaper in my Defy. I got the APK as well and it installed successfully. However, when I try to launch it, I always get an error and the screen returns blank.
15. I have problem with my compass. I downloaded the Compass application and I was asked to calibrate. I tried that but it seemed to be little inaccurate. So I tried to calibrate the compass using phone settings. However, here the compass was stuck at red when I tried. I uninstalled compass and tried re-calibrating but it needed a reboot to get it to green. However, when I tried again, it again stayed at red. Had to reboot again. So it works after a first reboot and stops working if I try to re-calibrate. Any fixes?

Can you run a quadrant benchmark and give us the scores? I mean how does the defy match up to high end droids in the benchmark score(which it shows at the end of the test) and how many FPS you get in the GPU benchmark inside that(the test in which graphics is tested using that first person shooter view test). If you dont know how to run quadrant benchmark, google it, its common.(Sorry if it is installed by default, i dont know about it, i am planning to buy an android phone soon so i am interested in defy) and what is the street price of defy? Since MRP is 18.5k INR, street price must be lesser. Thanks.
Abhi seems like Motorola released a newer version of the firmware for India. Because the 2.51 UK was pretty hard to root and z4root didnt work on it. We had to use super1click to root it.
Hmm. . i guess you will also find it unrootable for the moment.
In case you do root it then install the tenfar recovery apk and then make a backup of the stock rom you have before you do anything else to it. That way it might be of use in case you want to get back to original setup or if you decide to return the phone to the company when still under warranty.

Remove Bloatware from T-Mobile Note 2

I searched many various sites including this one to try and find the best and safest way to uninstall bloatware. I tried Titanium Pro and when I tried to Backup/Restore and selected an app to delete it then rebooted my Note 2. I looked back into B/R and found the item was still there. There was a message indicating that it may take 2 or 3 reboots to complete the uninstall.
I am looking for an app that will run and unistall all bloatware that is safe to use or gives you the option to select apps to unistall. I did download one which looked very good and even listed the apps it would uninstall. It was SuperNote2 DeBloatware which was a zip file. It would not unzip and I could not get it to unzip after numerous downloads.
Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I did download one which looked very good and even listed the apps it would uninstall. It was SuperNote2 DeBloatware which was a zip file. It would not unzip and I could not get it to unzip after numerous downloads.
Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Sorry I didn't post that. Yes, it is rooted. I did that a coupple of days ago using Kingo Android Root. Very quick (less than 3 minutes) and simple.
Thanks for your reply and help.

I searched many various sites including this one to try and find the best and safest way to uninstall bloatware. There was a message indicating that it may take 2 or 3 reboots to complete the uninstall.

I did find that posting yesterday and downloaded mrRobinson_Note_II_De_Bloater.v1.00.zip to my PC. When I unzipped this file I saw folders:
apps
assets
meta-inf
These folders dated back to 2/28/2008. So, I was very unsure to use this.
When I opened:
apps it contained: GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
Assets contained; common, fonts, icons, langs and themes.
Meta-inf contained: Com, Cert, Cert and manifest.
This just did not look right for what this was suppose to do. So, I left it.
Your opinion?

You are using a custom recovery, aren't you? CWM or TWRP ... Just follow the instructions in the 1st post. Boot into recovery and select that file and click custom and either run the program or just look through the files that you can remove and exit if you don't want to use the program.
Or, you could just install a custom ROM and not have to worry about this?

That thread is quite old and if you noticed, somewhat inactive with some issues reported. I always use Titanium Backup to "freeze" apps - this usually removes them from being active (and thus saving CPU and battery) but they still remain should you want them. It's a simple and painless process as you are not really deleting them and they do not use much memory anyway.
Here's a great list for the Samsung Galaxy line of devices from Android Forums: http://androidforums.com/metropcs-cdma-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/695070-safe-apps-remove.html

I honestly suggest using a custom rom instead... there are lists out there of apps to remove but it is more based on whats safe to remove vs not safe... ultimately its all user dependant (ie what apps do you use vs what someone else uses)... for me, I love to just install either CM (as reliable and "bare" as any of the roms come) or Jedi roms via aroma (if you still want to hang on to the TouchWiz side of things)... Aroma installs allow you to choose the bloatware you want to have and disregard the ones you dont want... there are tons of tutorials online that take you step by step... make sure you follow the directions (completely) and happy flashing!!

Dont know if you are still in need of help trying to figure out how to flash roms but, you would first need to install a custom recovery. The two major recoveries are TWRP and CWM. They're on par. I used CWM for years but switched to TWRP. From there you first want to make a backup of your original rom and flash as many roms you want to try out. If you dont like the rom, just restore. I dont know how familiar you are with flashing roms but it takes like one try and you pretty much do the same thing over and over.

MTP USB Device?
I thought I was doing great after uninstalling bloatware. However, when I tried to connect my Note 2 to my PC via USB I received the error that MTP USB Device driver could not be loaded. Apparently I must have uninstalled something on my Note 2 that is not allowing me to connect to the PC via USB. I have been searching all day, downloading various Driver apps to no avail. I even downloaded and installed Samsung Drivers which also did not work.
It never ends. Fix one thing and then another pops up. LOL
What else can I say except - H-E-L-P.
I still can use my USB plug from NOTE 2 to my Flash Drive to get stuff transfered to/from Note2/PC.

can you reflash? I hope so! There is sitll a way to reflash from sd card thought and install stock f/w or if you could remember or figure out which apk is responsible for that function. ...
That latter option is why I started this

ps this is why its so important to make a backup in twrp or cwm....google it or find it here! they also call it a nandroid backup...VERY IMPORTANT for issues like this. As previsouly stated you should be able to put the stock rom (check out sammobile's web page for official f.w) on the sd card and from there you can boot into recovery mode and install it from there. I believe. If that don't work look into mobile odin which I have never used. sorry for he typos lazy!

What ads exactly? Have you tried uninstalling all the unneeded bloatware the phone comes with?

I cannot confirm whether your device is infected by that mentioned kind of malware.. Can I know which country you belong to?
And if your device is infected, presently there is nothing we can do. Lookout clearly said that for a normal user it's better to replace the device with a new one. And for an advanced user who know well about root/system files, can try removing those malware from root level...
Everyone is at risk, dont worry.. Someone will come up with a solution..

Hello
There must be a way to clear the phone completely. A full wipe somehow and start fresh?
If I knew what the files were I'd delete them from root folders. No problems there.
Thanks

These malwares will not be removed even on full wipe/factory reset or anything. And as I told presently there is no way to remove it. But dont be sure that your device is infected by that one, may be it's something else.., so first you've to check other things, find out if its because of any application installed in your phone!
Remove those suspicious apps, and then check it out..
I removed many apps. But no success.
Any idea on how the malware reinstall itself after a clean wipe?
Sent from my SM-N9000Q using XDA Free mobile app
the malware doesnt reinstall itself.. it simply hides in the system partition which isn't affected my clean wipes.
the only way to remove it is to wipe and restore the system partition.
You could try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/asus-zenfone-2-flashing-recovery-mode-t3096596
under 3.1) Rooting Zenfone 2
use method 1
that will flash a clean image to your system partition, albeit with root and its caveats like "DO NOT TAKE OTAs, flash manually"
google is the real criminal...
hi guys..first of all install addons detector from playstore..use it ..it will show you all apps with adv.addons…delete those apps….second go to apps..google..yes..google…that is the main culprit..delete all your stored history…caches..cookies etc…third always browse the web in incongnito mode/do not track mode.whenever there is a pop up on your mobile..see the ad closely ..u will see :i:..press it..it will take you to its source..(google)..follow instructions…and you will be fine !! and last but not least…bless me..!!

what does it mean.. i think wiping out entire partition will sort the issue. re partition you device. or wipe and reflash every partition with fastboot commands
The problem is Gearbest. They do this on almost every freaking phone they sell, and in the case of ZF2, they even make it in a way that you are unable to even update the ROM (it gives error everytime). They do this more notoriously on Xiaomi devices, they just come loaded with adware with no chance of getting rid of it, at least for regular smartphone users.
Anyway, i bought mine last month and the way i did it was this:
Convert the SKU from CN to WW (search here the thread on how to do it)
Flash phone with Asus Flash Tool, i used the oldest available LL build, from 05/2015
Reboot to recovery, connect to PC and update to latest LL build via ADB
Reboot to recovery again and update to the first MM build via ADB
Boot the phone normally, put latest MM firmware zip file on internal storage or sdcard and update via update notification.
There you go, a ZE551ML updated to latest official MM firmware, with WW SKU.

EMUI 10 & apks

Greets all,
my Mate 20x came up that there was an update to EMUI 10 so I updated, all went well from what I saw, except now I cant install apks from dropbox, it comes up saying: "please download an app that can open this file". I cant download files from the play store and install, and I have made sure that install from unknown sources was enabled. I also made sure "files" app was set to allowed also. The update version is: 10.0.0.176, and no newer version is coming up. This is the Chinese version AL-00
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update, seems the only way I can install apps is by using HiSuite at the moment.

hm, interesting. have u tried downloading the apk files from dropbox to your local storage first, then try and open them with the huawei files app? for me that is the only app that is able to install other apps, es file explorer pro is not able to do so.
btw, new update got pushed for AL00, going from 176 to 185 havent installed it yet though.

No I cant do anything with Dropbox, but I was able to use HiSuite to install apks. And i just got the update you were talking about, installing it now, maybe this will fix the issue with the apks installing from dropbox, cause as the prior user said, I dont want to factory reset and have to put everything back if its not going to work. There is another issue I noticed with the update also, If I go out of Wifi range I lose access to the internet, in other words the cell data doesnt kick in unless I turn off the mobile data and then turn it back on. So far very annoying update. Maybe this 185 can fix these. Here's hoping and trying.

Well the update didnt fix the dropbox issue, tapping on the file prompts the error. so the update didnt fix the problem. I guess when it gets to be a pain either I fix it, install through HiSuite, or factory reset.

thats what u was trying to tell you from the start! use the files app!
im guessing it has to do with system rights to install apk files. even es file explorer pro is not allowed to do it with all permissions given.
