Powered Usb hub to connect external drive - Galaxy Note 10.1 Accessories

I have the original Samsung usb adapter for my note 10.1 and it works great. If like to be able to connect my camera and a usb powered external drive to my note. I know the note won't power usb devices. Had anyone had any luck using a powered Usb hub to connect usb powered devices to the note?

Ordered one of these today. Someone commented it allows them to connect their external hard drive to their S4 so hopefully it will work on the Note 10.1. I'll report back once I get it and try it out. Specifically I'm hoping it will enable me to copy directly from my camera to the drive for a backup with both devices connected to the hub. Will be pretty slick and totally eliminate my need for a laptop when traveling.

Yeah, there are some forums that discussed about that. If u connect to external power source, then it will work fine

Just reporting back the usb hub works perfectly. Connecting to my NTFS drive and using a card reader (my DSLR uses CF and Iwant to copy all files not just import/copy JPG files) and am able to easily copy files back/forth from my external drive powered by the hub. You will need an OTG app, this is what I've found works best for me but I'm sure a lot is just personal preference on the UI.

USB Adapter with a USB hub

Hello all,
I received my USB adapter from Samsung today and am pleased to inform you that it works wonderfully with a USB hub. My hub has 4 slots on it and the tab was playing well with multiple USB devices being plugged in.
Really? I guess usb hub is needed to make things work? i had all kinds of issues. Mainly, not reading some usb drives, and memory reader. I just plugged the usb drive, directly into the usb adapter. The memory card reader was connected by standard usb to mini usb cable. That didn't work.
I got to try this.
Thanks.
No problem. I actually have not tried storage devices yet, only input devices. I posted on your other thread as well.
I have a feeling thumb drives may be having a problem if they are formatted in the FAT32 file system. I am going to try an NTFS drive and external hard drive and will let you know my results.
UPDATE: It appears I had it the other way around. I plugged in an NTFS drive to no avail, then formatted it to FAT32 and it worked.
FAT32 works great. NTFS is completely missing from stock kernels, it's in pershoot's "lib" extra modules archive on his kernels. However, I tried an NTFS drive using the extra module and it failed. (might require some manual mount magic???) It would take a lot more work to get FUSE working properly, and that's needed for the (vastly superior) ntfs-3g driver.
So does it work with external usb hard drives (both self powered and plug powered) of the sizes of 500GB and more?
what brand/type
what brand/type of usb hub do you have

If the hub is powered then the drive should work fine. You just can't use a usb powered drive without a power source

Ican't get mine to read my game controllers. Says something about high powered device. It won't let me read the message. When I tap it to make it bigger it just goes away. I am very frustrated. Can you get a fame controller to work? I used ps3.

PS3 controllers require a special driver. It may also require too much current since it tries to charge via USB. You'll need a powered hub if that is the case.
Gonna try my PS3 controller in a few minutes.
Edit: So far:
No excessive current errors from my PS3 controller - however mine has a fully charged battery because it's been plugged into a PS3 that has only been playing movies/videos for weeks. However button presses aren't recognized by anything. My guess is that if I dmesg I'll get an unrecognized device error. PS3 controllers are nonstandard.
However a Nyko AirFlo controller worked fine in SNES9x EX. It was semi-recognized by SNESoid - the keymap screen recognized something was being pressed, but games themselves wouldn't register presses.
Edit 2: PS3 controllers require the hid-sony kernel module to be loaded. This is included in pershoot's optional "lib" archive with his kernels. I had to hit the PS button to get it to turn on and start sending presses to the tab. No excessive current errors, but my controller was fully charged.
Thanks. But for some reason the ps3 and the x box controller worked for the xoom. I called samsung and they don't have any help for this issue yet. Can you get any external device to work for at least over fifty percent of what the adapter is meant to do? Did you get any error messages. I get high powered device connected. Then it say underneath that out could not connect. Device needs............. I cant read the rest. When I tap it to enlarge and read it disappears. Samsung can't figure out why that is happening either. Plz help.

Make sure the PS3 controller is fully charged before you connect it. If it isn't, it'll try to charge the battery and that's probably what sets off the overcurrent protection.
As to it working with the Xoom - I'd be VERY surprised if it worked with the Xoom when stock. Not so surprised about custom kernels, adding those modules is one of the first things people add, and the Xoom guys may have figured out module autoloading.
Thanks going to try now

wish i'd have read this before i bought it. i assumed it would since every other android tablet i have/had can power my external hds. pretty much makes it useless for me now as i was hoping to use it as external storage and for easy, quick file transfers. tf, xoom, and archos all work fine.

It works on a stock 3.1 build, it was one of those new features hyped at google i/o. I have both the European XOom and the Galaxy tab. The xoom copes fine with the ps3 and my other usb only non brand gamepad. The galaxy tab give me the hipower usb device error.

For SNESoid, you probably forgot to go into the other settings menu and turn on external input. The names may be off, but in addition to setting the key mappings, you have to turn on another option for it to see additional input devices, and then your gamepad will work

I had troubles reading an SD card with an old USB reader I had lying around. It was hit and miss.
Then I bought this SD card reader at Fry's for $4.99 and it works perfectly.
So, just to be clear, you are using a male A-A USB cable with one end plugged into the USB adapter on the GTab and the other end into one of the available USB ports in the hub, right?

Will my tablet recognise my Sony Handycam? Can i upload videos to youtube from it?

Hey guys
So basically I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC19E camcorder, and was wondering if i plugged it into my galaxy tab using the samsung usb adapter thing, will it recognise it and allow me to take and transfer files to and from the tab?
As i want to upload some videos to youtube but it wont work on my computer?
So im basically asking if anybody has got mass storage access to devices they have plugged into the tab 10.1
Thanks in advance for any help
Adam
I have a Sony dcr-sr100. It mounts to my galaxy tab 10.1 on stock firmware.
I have found that " high" powered USB devices are rejected by this tab, which is annoying. But i have found that how you connect the devices matter also.
E.g. if the adaptor is plugged in then i use my USB drive to the adapter is does not work.
If my USB drive is plugged into the adapter then into the tab it usually works, if not pull out and try again right away.
If you can get a powered USB hub, this will help for connecting more devices. Generic keyboard & mice work fine ( if not " high" powered)
USB mass storage otg app in the market will help to mount more drives at once and enable access to NTFS formatted drives which are not supported on the stock firmware.

This is the one I got.

I don't see much point paying more than this.
Also the " card reader" versions are designed to only mount one card at a time since that is how the stock device handles otg. But if you already have USB card reader your happy with, it can be used with USB mass storage OTG app from the market. ( Which also adds NTFS support).

I got the corded version, as I thought it was more risky using the "Block" style one that might break the connector 30pin if it was knocked too hard.
There is rick of the corded version breaking on the cable, but it is a cheap replacement fix.

Otg usb cable issues

Hi,
I just bought an adaptor cable for my n8010 to allow me to connect flash drives and other usb devices. However, every usb device that I have connected (a couple of flash drives and a usb keyboard) seems to have the same issue. Basically, I connect the device and it will continously connect and then a few seconds later disconnect the device. This just keeps looping until I physically disconnect the device.
With the usb keyboard I find that I can actually use the device while it says it is connected. However, I dont seem able to see the usb drives mounted anywhere.
Has anyone managed to get a flash pen and keyboard working using an adaptor cable?
Im using Revolution HD 4.1 if that makes any difference.
Steven

Try turning your note off completely, plug in the usb stick and turn on. I had the same problem. In the boot process the note discovered the device and now works fine. After the initial boot with the usb stick it appears to remember it and shows up automatically when I plug it in.

This seems to be the case for all accessories that use the 30 pin data connecter. I have tried 3 different usb adapters as well as the Samsung keyboard dock. None have any instructions indicating you have to restart the Note but that is what works.
ENJOY!

Is it possible to run a Internet USB Dongle with the original adapter, or with any OTG cable?
I need to have internet connection outside my house, and using an USB Dongle is my only option.

I don't believe that's possible; however, you should be able to use your smartphone as a hotspot unless it's prohibited by your mobile provider.

USB OTG Cable?

Firstly, is it worth getting a USB OTG cable? What can you use it for? Do you have one?
Second, which one should I get for the Galaxy Nexus? I've seen these two:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Con...=1365625468&sr=1-2&keywords=samsung+otg+cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Cable...qid=1365625284&sr=1-23&keywords=usb+otg+cable
Which is better? Is there any difference? Appreciate the help.
Thanks,

First you have to get the app called Stick Mount if you want to use usb flash drives. But the OTG cable can be used for a lot of things, keyboard, mice,
usb flash drives. I've seen a youtube video where the guy uses a hub and uses all 3.

I was going to get the Nexus Media Importer. But, which cable should I get?
I have a generic usb OTG.
I have successfully used a mouse, usb flash drive, keyboard.
The only thing I couldn't use was my CDMA internet stick.
If that would have worked then it would have really been awesome!

How much can you do using USB OTG with an unrooted Galaxy Nexus? Most importantly, can you use a memory card reader to copy files from the memory card to the phone or use it to upload the files to Dropbox?
I'm asking on behalf of my sister. I don't have access to her phone so I can't simply try it out. I know USB OTG works great on my rooted Galaxy SIII but I've never had a Nexus device.

As of 4.2 there is native support for USB OTG on the Galaxy Nexus so you don't need any third party app. You can use it without root USB device is mounted as /usbdisk. Try X-plore from the Play Store which shows a separate drive for the USB device you have connected.

See if there's an option in settings>storage as Mount USB storage, if not there use an app such as stick mount or USB OTG helper. Even for using those apps the phone should recognize when a storage device is connected, the pen drive/card reader should light up.
If option is there and still not mounting then any of your devices may be improper check your OTG cable with other phones, your pen drive/card reader.
Clean the contacts of cable and your USB device. Best way to confirm working is to boot to recovery and connect, USB storage is always mounted in recovery mode.

Any decent file explorer should also be able to see mounted storage, especially given 4.2. You may have to browse to root and poke around until you find the appropriate /mnt folder, but set a bookmark (your explorer supports bookmarks, right?) and that should be all she wrote. StickMount is also great for me.
OTG has been really helpful for playing media off of the occasional flash drive, and while using a mouse isn't all too helpful, playing with a full keyboard can make for a surprisingly good experience.

can you see your OTG usb drive?

I have an OTG cable that worked fine with a 32 GB usb drive on my Galaxy S2 (stock ICS 4.0.4) without any additional driver. When I plugged it in, the notification came up "usb connected" and the drive was visible. I connected this same cable/drive to my Note 2 (stock 4.1.2 rooted) for the first time and it did not see it, nor did I see any notificication.
Did you see yours?
thanks.
Yup mine works
Thanks for the reply. It was my usb drive. I bought a brand new Lexar usb 3.0 32 GB usb drive and Note 2 did not recognize it (Windows pc read/write to it just fine), even though I formatted it in my Windows pc to FAT32. I tried another usb drive and it came up just fine, without the need of any additional driver.

My working too on seagate 500 mb and pendrives.
Not sure why my brand new Lexar 32GB USB 3.0 wasn't recognized (it's usb 2.0 compatible).
it worked fine in my pc and transferred close to 100 Mbytes/s read and 50 MBytes/s write on the USB 3.0 port.
When I plugged it to the OTG cable, my Note 2 couldn't see it. The same cable with a 8 GB usb drive was working fine so
it wasn't the cable.
I already tried to format it in my windows pc to FAT32 and also to exFAT but none of them worked in the Note 2.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.
The same OTG cable and USB drive (Lexar 32 GB USB 3.0) worked just fine connected to a Galaxy S2.
Why the Note 2 didn't see it?
The only difference is that the S2 runs stock ICS 4.0.4 and the Note 2 runs stock JB 4.1.2. Both are rooted.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks.
