High battery drainage overnight: please help me understand the batt logs - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So, I'm having problems with battery usage, I believe.
Recently I have noticed a 12% drainage overnight, with everything off (3G and wifi, only cellular line on), so I installed GSam Battery Monitor and run a test.
I turned again everything off (3G, wifi, sync, bluetooth, gps), only 2G cellular line was on.
I charged phone at 100%, and to be sure I kept the charging cable for another 2 hours before unplugging.
This morning, after exactly 6 hours, I lost 10%.
This 10% has been used in the following way:
- telephone 0%
- display 8%
- cellular ljne 60%
- wifi 0%
- wakelocks 4%
- bluetooth 0%
- applications 24%
- other 4%
The apps' 24% (of the 10% battery usage) has been used in the following way
- maps 12%
- kernel 7%
- GSam Batt Mon 4%
- all others well below 0.5%
Not sure if this is a normal drainage.
What I don't understand is why maps shows such a high %. If I go in details for maps I can see the following:
- cpu use 37s
- wakelock duration 11m
- wakelock number 2400
- standby interruptions 488
- magnetic shield 7m
- Wakelock details: LocationReceiverService and others
- Involved processes: *wakelock* com.google.android.maps:LocationFriendService
Is this a normal drainage?
And why is maps working so hard if 3G is off? Also what the hell is this LocationFriendService and how can I stop it?
Thanks

Def not normal. That location service thing may be an app that is constantly trying to find ur location.
Try to find the app 'better battery stats' it will help u see what is causing all the wakelocks.
Do u have the Facebook app? Do u have 4g turned on or off? Gps on or off? From my experience turning data off at nite doesn't really help cuz some apps will constantly try to connect which will drain ur battery more. U want to be on wifi as much as possible as 3g and even more so 4g suck up more juice than wifi (as long as u have a good connection and it's not constantly tryin to search for signal)
There was actually and in depth post on xda a few months ago abt how to get better battery usage. I can't remember where it was, but try to find that.

I am using a similar app and as i wrote the wakelocks caused by the process LocationFriendService comes from google maps.
I do have facebook but location is off.
In any case overnight the phone has all off: 3g, sync, wifi, bluetooth, but yes you are riht, I believe maps keeps on trying.
yes at home I am always on wifi.
My real problem now is how to have the process LocationFriendService stop running in the background

go into your maps settings and turn off location sharing.

This is not enough. To prevent maps autostarts install gemini app manager (requires root) and in maps app turn off all the flags except "on package removed" and
"signed_in_out" and "updated".
This will save your battery and manual start still works.

How`s my battery life ?

I just got the Desire last week, and trying to get the most out of the battery as I can
I have the ROM from HERE:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
I have the nexus 1 animated wallpaper ON
Screen brightness on AUTO - but timeout=30secs
animations ON
Back-ground data + auto-sync ON
`Always-on Mobile Data`-under Networks is ON
network is WCDMA ONLY - to try stop it from hopping from G 3G H E etc etc
etc.
Data roaming is OFF
Bluetooth OFF
WIFI OFF
didnt use blutooth or WIFI at all in approx 18hours of battery discharge.. for the first 10hrs approxit was idle (overnight) the was light web browsing etc, NOT wifi, just 3G browsing/sms etc
Is this any good?
when the battery is LOW i get a screen showing the battery stats but cannot find that screen when Phone is fully charged ??
cheers
You're alright, I kill mine for either 12h or less, like 6
3g browsing, few calls and some play with the ui
Auto-sync is a real battery killer. Do your updates manually or switch off network connection when you dont need it (with apndroid or similar). Idle battery usage should be about ~1% / hour.
The display(amoled) when in use uses a LOT of power. Keep it as low as possible.
Try to check from time to time if any apps you've installed has any wakelock -bugs. When the phone doesnt sleep with the screen off, the battery usage is way off, like 30-40% idle overnight vs. ~8%.

[Q] Cell standby/ mobile standby battery use?

Well, I searched the forums and haven't found anything specifically for the Defy.
Coming from an HTC Wildfire, which under similar usage had a battery drain split of 30% Cell standby, 30% wifi, 30% system, I noticed that with the exact same usage, the Defy has a cell standby use of over 50% every single day (right now its at 54%). Funny thing is, it ALWAYS says on the battery manager that there is no reception for exactly 50% of the time. This is bull, because I live in central London, and I rarely get less than maximum signal displayed.
Also, I'm on WiFi almost all the time, (WiFi at home and at uni, so the only time it uses 3g/HSPA is on the way there and back, which is less than half an hour).
Has anyone else had this? Any idea what may cause it? I feel like I should be getting better battery life than what I'm getting now, it lasts under a day.
Setting your mobile to 2G only should save you a little power, also be careful with task killers as they can kill some system processes that reduce battery usage, restart you cell to get them back.
I can get 3-4days of battery life with lite use.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not using any task killers, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Any tips on how to switch it to 2G? I can't figure out anything in the network settings.
I'm just thinking that there may be something wrong with my radio receiver/transmitter to be using so much power in comparison to wifi and phone idle (well, compared to my last phone).
You can switch to 2G in wireless & network settings, mobile networks, select network.
But I am already using 2G and I have the same issue, maybe it is a little better than 3G, but still the "cell standby" is using most of the battery.
I saw the battery usage on Galaxy and there is only a very small usage for "cell standby" only about 10%.
i dont know what's going on with your cell, but WIFI is actually the biggest battery taker
,and the strength of signal power really do something to your WIFI chipset battery usage
what about a better WIFI signal....err i tried to change my cell into 2G or even outline
it doesn't work too much as i want
so maybe think about the WIFI problem?
Well, right now the main drainers are as follows:
Mobile standby: 44%
Go Launcher EX: 25%
Wi-Fi: 15%
Display: 15%
Phone idle: 2%
I was in my place all day today, with the phone permanently connected to Wi-Fi, so 3G was not in use. I get very strong cell reception in my place so I either have a spectacularly efficient WiFi module, or a power hungry cell radio. Or the measurements the phone is taking are wrong.
On another note, Go Launcher seems to be taking up a large percentage since its last update (yesterday or the day before), so I'm uninstalling that.
if WIFI should not be the reason and you've uninstalled the update task,i think it should be OK...but what would you do if that doesn't work?
the battery usage of standby was still more than 40 percent, yes?
why dont you download another battery monitor software....?
i'd have a longtime software error in my HTC G3.....it alwaws show me 45percent remaining battery ....
in setting/wireless & network/mobile networks/select network --- it's good to set 2G or 3G do not let automatic because it switches from 3G to 2G if the signal drops. Set 3g and see how it is.
(sorry for english)
mine on automatic in 6 hours battery dropped to 50% in standby, and now it is set to 3g all the time
mine:
Mobile standby: 40%
Display: 22%
Phone idle: 21%
System: 4%
Games, Adw Launcher EX and os: each 3-2%
when in games mine sometimes freezes and i must get out and restart the game???? i dont no why and i dont no if it is ok but ....
Thanks for the input everybody. So all of today I used the phone pretty sparingly at home, and it's been constantly connected to WiFi. Distribution is:
Mobile Standby: 56%
Wi-Fi: 19%
Display: 12%
Phone idle: 9%
Android System 2%
Under Mobile Standby, it still says "Time without a signal: 50%" even though it's definitely had perfect reception all day. I don't know what's causing it to report incorrect numbers :/
Anyway, I switched from auto to 3g auto (I tried 2G, it didn't seem to work properly, Google wouldn't even load).
I guess I'll just ignore it :/
Edit: When not on wifi, it seems to switch between 3g and HSPA quite often. Could this mean something?

just like what <stapuv>says when your cell drops any one of the 3G or HSPA singnal another singnal will be switched...it'll use more power for changing network frequently.....but i dont no if this could be the reason for your situation...hmmmm
From my reading the 50% without signal is just a software bug, and can be fixed by toggling on aeroplane mode turning of teh screen for 20 seconds or so and then turning of aeroplane mod when you notice it's happening. the 50% will soon decrease. I too believe that cell standby is using way to much on my phone (always 45%+) even though im browesing the web facebook or playing games for larger peroids of time and those apps don't even show up on the battery usage display and if they do theya re only 2 percent or less.
I have a question for you guys :
I get
46% mobile standby
43% phone idle
10% voice calls
3% display
is this 43% phone idle all right? Doea it mean that 43% of the battery have beed drained by phone in idle state (so maybe not sleeping?) or it means that from all the time phone was idle (asleep) for 43%?
I guess mobile standby use is about the same on everyones phones. That's what I wanted to find out!

After Go Launcher EX latest update, the battery seems to drain a lot faster during idle/standby. Removed that and standby battery usage is better.
Just thought I'd add my finding on this.
My Defy regularly showed Mobile Standard over 50% - but also time without signal was always double the time that the phone had been switched on. For instance if the phone was switched on since a reboot for 1 hour then mobile standby would show the total time as 2 hours but time without a signal as 1 hour.
I had always been running on a battery saver profile (in froyo I was running the custom battery profile) & after every reboot the mobile standby bug would show.
Yesterday I changed my battery profile to the Performance mode & after several reboots the bug hasn't shown up & now the mobile standby shows the total time correctly & zero minutes without signal. The %age use has dropped to be more in line with wifi at around 32%.
I haven't noticed any difference in battery life so as mentioned in a previous post it does look like some sort of bug.
A percentage is a proportion.
Just because it's higher on the Defy, that doesn't mean the mobile standby is using more power than it does on other handsets, it could just mean everything else is using less.
There's no point comparing your Defy's battery usage to any other handset apart from another Defy.

OK so after a few days of having no issue I rebooted the phone & the "bug" came back today so I guess it wasn't to do with the battery mode as I then put it back into custom battery mode, rebooted the bug went away.
Haven't noticed any difference over the last few days so I'm not going to worry about it.
I have found that DEFY is getting the readings wrong!
Here is how I get this:
1) fully charged the battery
2) started angry birds.
3) ~2 hour later, battery dropped to 60% and usages was as follows:
mobile standby 49%
phone idle 40%
display 4%
angry birds 7%
WTF ?!?! it should be : angry birds ~ 80%
This mettery is tottaly useless!
Personally I couldn't care less what the battery usage breakdown says. In my case 1% battery can standby 1~2 hours or use 3~5 minutes. That's pretty good for me as a charge can last 2 days.
Hi.
Could someone with this "bug" or "battery problems" do a test for me ?
A few hours after you've last charged your phone (or connected to USB) and being sure you haven't rebooted your phone recently (24 hours or so), do the following:
(My phone uses spanish language so the names might be different ...)
Dial *#*#4636#*#*, and choose battery history.
There, choose "CPU Use" and "since last charged".
What are the 4 or 5 main processes appearing in that list, and what's the CPU time they've used (you'll find that by "clicking" on the process' name) ?

[Q] Rapid Battery Life depletion during sleep

Hey XDA friends. I got the Verizon HTC One a few weeks ago and battery life started out fantastic. When I put away to go to sleep it only lost 7% all night with GPS on and wifi on and all that and I was astonished. However as time went on I found those results kept getting worse and worse until I was draining 30% in a night. I went and uninstalled battery guru and now I only drain 12% a night. Some nights however I still lose 20% in a night with sleep mode on. How do I check what keeps waking my phone up and draining my battery. I'm afraid this will affect my phone's battery in the long run. I will start disabling GPS at night but I wish I still had that 7% in a night. How do I check what is messing with my phone???

go to settings/power/usage. this will tell you which app is using the most of you battery. also you should never have gps on while youre sleeping. you might also want to turn off auto-sync and then re-enable it after you wake up. you can create a widget to do just that. if you need help with that, just let me know.

Do you use blinkfeed, that will kill your battery pretty fast. Even if you don't think you are using it, go check and see if it's syncing anything in the settings. I thought mine was turned off, but then I logged into facebook (turned sync off in facebook), later I found that blinkfeed was syncing it anyway w/out my knowledge.

Really, 1% per hour on standby with cellular radios on is pretty acceptable. Depending on signal strength, the radio could be pulling that just to maintain a connection to the tower.
Thanks everyone!
With GPS off, Sleep mode on, and NO BATTERY HELPER APPS (Battery guru was diminishing my battery life) I got a record breaking (for me) 4% loss in battery life during my 8 hour night's sleep, not bad if I do say so myself, after that my battery has been a lot better. I wish Verizon would give us HTC's battery saving software back but let's not ask too much of Verizon or they might give us timely updates.

those battery saving apps are so pointless IMHO, it's just another app and if coded incorrectly will do exactly what it did to you, destroy your battery that is working fine. very happy you can now enjoy your phone the way was designed to be!

Hey..I had the same problem so...first download wakelock detector from play store..after installing jus use your phone like as usual..after 4 to 5 hrs or right before you charge your phone, open the wakelock app and check what's waking up your phone during sleep..for everyone it seems the battery is drained by Google services ..the main culprit being the location services.. so switch off the location services in settings..and also in Google maps, go into setting and then into Google location settings and make sure location reporting and location history are disabled, make sure they are unchecked.. that's it..restart the phone..fully charge it and test it out ..and DON'T use any battery saving apps ..and also uninstall wakelocker app after your battery life is back to normal..I'm an average user and I unplug around 9 in da morning and when I come home around 6, I still have 65% left..I don use facebook .. heard even facebook app is major battery drainer....you jus have to tweak and play with settings till you find your desired battery life expectancy cos everyone uses their phone differently..and we all have different apps so the main thing is to find out what's eating the phone battery most...I'm just pleased with my decision in picking HTC ONE over galaxy S4
similar problem here....google services is killing my battery (relatively). location is part of it, but google hangouts is also going crazy (watchdog alerts me to excessive usage....over 50%, but hangouts was at 100%)
i was spoiled on my g-nex, where i left wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on 24/7 and could easily go 24 hours. now i'm lucky to get 12 (with about 1 hour of screen on time).
I'm hoping things will sort out, device is only about a week old, but google optimized location usage (iirc) such that it isn't supposed to constantly ping and kill battery. we shall see, i guess.
I'm not sure what the problem could be but I'm just gonna say that yesterday I got around 18 hours of battery life with over 5 hours screen on time which I consider awesome battery life.
I'm stock, so it's definitely possible to get good battery life.
10 percent overnight? Thats not that great but not horrible. My dna is running carbon (android 4.3) I use tasker to turn off autosync and data/wifi and put it on silent at whatever set time I make it. My phone drains about 5 percent max overnight, usually a lot less.

you can turn off updates in facebook and its not bad, but yeah if you have autoupdate on, it can kill the battery.
as far as the OP, I don't get why you don't charge you phone while you are sleeping. Seems like the perfect time.
Turning GPS off shouldn't affect your battery life. If you're not using your phone, the phone isn't going to use the GPS for anything. So it shouldn't be using your battery. The culprit is usually an app that is wakelocking your phone. So you need to find which app it is that constantly wakes your phone from deep sleep. Turning off autosync would help a bit if you are really paranoid. The big thing that hurts our battery when the screen is off, is the LTE radio, but most people are connected to WiFi when they sleep so it's not a big deal.
Just an FYI, turning off GPS has been ineffective since 2.2 Froyo. When Gingerbread 2.3 was released like 2+ years ago, it allowed for the GPS to only be used when an app called for it to be used. Otherwise GPS will not do anything unless you pull up an app that calls it to do something.

I'm Desperate, Let's Fix My Battery Life

I have a T999V (Wind Mobile) running TouchWiz 4.4 (with towel root) on the Wind Mobile network. This phone has a brand new Anker 2200mAh battery.
Unfortunately, my battery life is under 9hrs. I get about 2hrs of screen on time, which consumes about 20% of battery, and then the combination of Android System, Android OS, Google Services will consume a whopping 50% battery.
I have Wakelock Detector, BetterBatteryStats and GSam Battery Monitor installed.
How do we diagnose what's causing this problem?
I'm usually at home, using my home WIFI. Other issues I've noticed with my phone are that I notice slowdowns sometimes with Swiftkey, when a lot of app updates are going on, Google Maps, Google Chrome address bar. This phone did have water damage at some point and I had to have the power button replaced. Could this affect the battery drainage and or the slowdowns?

Thats about what I get with a new stock battery. If I leave it on and roaming all day while at work and I get no signal, I'm down to 40%, few hours of screen time. airplane mode all day at least gets me to 60-70% by the end of the day.
Is what it is. lol. Plague of all smartphones.
you can't expect a good battery life that you desire. because samsung s3 has a powerful CPU, and a good high resolution screen which will take power to run. You will be lucky to get about 5 hours on a stock battery. If you really want to do stuff.. try under clocking the CPU too 1GHZ or below. that would probably give you 1-2 hour extra battery but other than that..
Try the basics: - GPS off, location off, Data off. etc.

Dude, your battery is normal, we all have the same or similar battery time.
If your concerned with battery life, try an extended battery..
In 3hrs I've used 70% of the battery with 2.5hrs of screen on time. I find it hard to accept that this is normal for these phones.

What were you doing during those 2.5hrs of screen time? With wifi or 4g on, I can kill mine in a few hours, with a new battery. Don't know what you expect.
Disable Google now from the app settings, in WiFi advanced settings make sure 'always scanning' is disabled, only sync what is necessary from the accounts section in stock settings app, only enable WiFi, Bluetooth, etc, when you use it.
First, bigger battery: http://www.amazon.com/dp/9838427837/
Second, Turn off background WiFi scanning (in CM11, Settings / WiFi / ::: menu (lower right) / Advanced / uncheck Network notification, uncheck Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep, uncheck Scanning always available)
Third, Deny wake rights for Google Play Services (in CM11, Settings / Privacy / Privacy Guard / ::: menu (top right) / check Show built-in apps / long-press Google play services / scroll down to Wake up and Deny , scroll down to Keep awake and Deny / BACK once / long-press Google Services Framework / deny Keep awake )
That'll get you 2 days in MY usage

LG G4 Battery drain (Google play services, Viber, Android system, Cell standby)

Hello guys, im new to xda and this is my first thread so go easy on me,
I Have G4 H815 international version, upgraded from lollypop to mm as soon as lg rolled it out. Few months have passed with exellent battery, no problems at all. And then suddenly a month ago battery drain have started siriusly to impact on battery life, im talking about 1 hour screen on time, over night 20% standby drain while asleep ~7h. This is what i have tried:
-Bought a new battery - same drain
-Factory reset - nothing chaneged.
Note:
~30% Android system
~25% Google Play services
~12% Android OS
And then was Screen
So 2 weeks after, i have tried to delete updates of Google play services (version 8.4.89(2428711-440)) and disable.
Things got worse.
Battery barely charged, and done another factory reset, only installed WhatsApp and Viber, after which battery got about 15% better.
Note:
screen 29%
google play services 12%
Viber 10%
Android System 9%
Cell standby 9%
Android OS 5%
Disabled everything in hidden menu, but nothing still.
If anyone have any suggestions or thoughts feel free answer.
In advance thanks, im sorry for bad grammar, not my mother language and screenshots still dont know how to upload

If you keep data and sync turned on during the night that must be the source of your battery drain. Those things are the biggest battery suckers. If you changed your carier that could also been the reason for the anormal battery drain because the signal reception could be worse than the one from your previous caries thus sucking more battery. I mean, if the signal is weak you end up losing more battery. If you keep data on while traveling on public transports that also sucks a lot of battery because the signal is constantly changing between 4g and 3g and that sucks balls.
Anyway, you have here several reasons. I don't exactly know the details of your battery history so you should consider my points and see if any fit your problem
