Don't hold your hopes much, the only way firmware update will affect screen power usage is by toning down brightness.
LCD screen power usage comes from backlight mostly, so its hardly possible to change it if you want brightness to stay the same.

Agreed, the main change I hope to see is more improvement in the screen sharpness and contrast. The. 253 firmware update made a real great screen contrast difference for Xperia Z, but the ZL did not benefit much of screen contrast from. 253. Hopefully. 307 can make up for this.

I would assume that's because Z uses inferior JDC screen outside of Japan.
ZL has good Sharp screen in all territories, so I guess not much to improve here, it was better from the start.

If they deliver 4.2.2 around same time as Z (= in 2 weeks maybe?) I'm happy

Hopefully!! Hope it wont get the 4.2 update 2 months after the Z like xperia s

[Q] would you recommend me buy an xperia arc s? why?

Hi, I'm an user of an old xperia x8 and I'm thinking in upgrade to an Arc S but I need to know a few things before, like battery life and smoothness of UI in GB and ICS (I'm not planing to install custom kernel/rom).
I've watched some reviews on youtube but the only thing I see there is people scrolling through settings, app drawer, etc... I need to know how it behave in daily use based on your experiences... I hope you can help me
thanks
best regards
What is your budget first of all?
yes i recommend it for you
talking about the battery life,,,, when i bought it i had to recharge it everyday! but as time goes on the battery performance gets better. and when you update it to ICS the battery life is improved and lasts for 4 days (normal use)

could you please define what does normal use mean for you if the same as for me (gmail sync on, some emails.. 15-25 as i use them instead of sms mainly, little bit of gaming like 30 minutes per day, maybe 15 minutes of talking and a couple of sms messages) then your results are astonishing... with such usage my phone struggles to stay unpluged for 20hrs.
anyway, as it was asked, on what rom and settings?!?!
thanks for your answers! well, my budget is enough to buy an xperia arc s, i really like the design (i could buy a Galaxy S but just do not like it). I need the battery to last at least 1 day (15~24 hours is acceptable) with 3g data on, email push notifications, whatsapp and little web browsing, I do not play games on my phone or listen to music. Anyone here using arc s with that kind of use?
thanks!

i am sure it can handle that much of load for a day..samsung sucks..yesterday had a fight on S2 forum on the same topic..got a warning from Forum Mod too
It would be wise for now to go for Xperia P or U considering the same price as Arc S..

This is a wonderful cell phone but if you going to buy a new cell phone im recommend to you buy Xperia S, this is a dual core and more app better than arc s
Tbh, the Xperia s is good, but not a huge leap from the arc. Dual core is used to imply better performance, but it's the context that matters. If microsecond improvements in response really matter then go for an Xperia s, but don't look for a huge difference in performance overall then unless you're a huge gaming freak with no PSP the difference will be negligible.

[Q] to upgrade or to root

Hi, I am having a dilemma as titled. I am getting increasingly frustrated by the low RAM and poor battery life (with hot phone) of my Xperia S (on B.1.96 latest firmware). I use Whatsapp a lot and it couldn't keep itself in memory if I launch/run Chrome at the same time. The push notification is still there but it will load again to get into the conversation page. Does custom ROM provide much better memory handling to allow better management? My Nexus 7 feels just fine even both devices run on 1GB RAM (of course Nexus 7 has more cores, but I think it doesn't affect memory management.)
Living in Malaysia, where temperature is generally higher also doesn't help the phone, which gets hot very easily. It gets hot easily and drains battery - I could get something as ridiculous as getting 5 minutes on screen time but already went through 40% of the juice after half a day. I don't believe there is anything to do with stupid background apps as I screen my apps pretty vigorously on their efficiency and most of them are inherited from my older HTC Desire - which has no background apps problem for me. I believe it's definitely a firmware issue but I am not sure how much can custom ROM fix in that department?
Should I upgrade? My current shortlist will be either an Xperia Z1 or a HTC One. I still admire HTC phones a lot and the One certainly does very well to impress me. My main concern is on its aluminium as I'll definitely opt for the black option, it may reveal scratch and scuff very easily. Z1 looks to be an impressive phone but I am slightly worried with its increased size and weight. I always try to handle phones in one hand to see if I could drag down the notification bar without reshuffling my fingers and the HTC One is as probably the largest I could take. But the extra battery, on-screen button (a plus for me) and water-resistant ability keeps me pretty interested (especially Sony Malaysia is bundling the dock together).
Will rooting and custom ROM solve my frustration? Or I am better off upgrading to a proper flagship?

That is one of the options but how much improvement it warrants? It baffles me that the Nexus 4 has twice the mileage my Xperia S could get - sure there's hardware and firmware difference and 300mAh difference, but it still does not make much sense to me. The Xperia S has not had good battery life and I must keep it charged whenever I have the chance.

Is Sony cheating us??

Hi to all Sony xperia users. I was playing with my wife's micromax canvas hd phone and surprised to see its total ram exactly about 1 gb with the same screen resolution as of ours xperia s whereas in xperia s it's very low around 700 mb. Against claimed 1gb by Sony. Anyone have a explanation or their views about this?
Screen shots below.

Amount of free ram depends on the chipset the device uses.
None of Micromax devices use snapdragon chipsets.
While our Xperia S uses snapdragon s3 chipset and it requires that 300 MB reserved for GPU.
So you get around 700 MB for apps.
Newer chipset has reduced memory requirement for GPU like the one in Xperia Z which requires less than 200 MB.
One more example,
My laptop has 4 GB of RAM but out of that 1 GB is reserved for system and i only get 3GB Ram as usable memory.
~300mb of ram are used by system or something like that
the more the system ram,less the phone lags.check samsung phones(eg galaxy s2,it has same 1gb but 900 mb free).lags like hell.so dont complaint.all apps work fine,no problem multitasking and its fluid

Xperia ZL overheat issue

I just bought my Xperia ZL a month ago and upgraded to JB 4.2.2 (FW 10.3.1.A.2.67) but I have an overheating issue with the battery now. It goes to 47 degree C in 5 minute for a light usage like browsing with Google Chrome. Is it true that FW 2.67 is causing an overheat? Cause several forums says so. will downgrading to JB 4.1.2 can fix this issue? Thanks

I have no problems anymore since I installed FW 10.3.1.A.2.67.
In May I did have heating problems, when the phone was on the lock screen and did not have any internet connection (Wifi, Edge, 3G

Maybe you need to reset your phone and ré-insatll everything. I think you have a process that's eats all cpu and so your battery

* Snapdragon battery GURU
* Factory Reset
* Rooting
* BL unlocking, locking
* Switching Battery Adapter (Charger, from weaker to original Xperia ZL).
* Switching to 4.3 Android
* build 244.
* build 67.
* Will Try possibly Warranty in USA.

So which one is the best solution?
For me, there is no solution.
Just tried again switching to .244 and SEUS repair, no use, nothing helped.
It gets some kind of loop. When it gets overheated and thats fast, simply watch some video in youtube or just sit in CHROME, suprisingly that i played Candy Crush and it survived, only 1 or 2 times he restarted bootloop.
I guess the warranty is the only option.
I'll check back if something new comes up.
So... I know with the 6506 I just bought, I experience pretty good heat if I create a nandroid... Not sure what to think with that as other phones haven't done that...
Is that normal (do others experience a significant heat rise when they do a nandroid?)

My phone can get pretty warm during nandroid. That's why I like TWRP, it'll go automatically shut off the screen after a while, which reduces battery drain and heat.

[Q] Jellybean or Kitkat?

So I've this Z1 Compact and I charged it to 100% when i got home (the first charge) since its Li-ion and cause I've read everywhere that you don't need to keep it plugged in for 6hrs straight I din't let it.
The next day morning itself I found Kitkat update and updated. But it seems the battery drain is far more on Kitkat than on jellybean as per reports from a whole lot of people who get upto 7hrs screen on time or more on Jellbean and I manage barely 4-5hrs max even on wifi.
Kitkat was supposed to have better battery life, as is the case with most other phones and that's why I din't give it a second thought and updated, now I'm thinking of rotting and flashing back Jellybean stock rom, what do you guys think?
And from the last 2 days, camera app is also behaving a bit odd, in manual mode specially, its hanging when i click a photo and the photo doesnt get saved, to avoid a reboot i just lock screen and turn on.
So any suggestions?

Stock KK here, rooted and debloated but bootloader locked. Yeah, JB have better battery but difference is not significant maybe 30min. difference in screen time. Nonetheless phone can still survive a day of heavy use and still go home with a juice to spare.

Photo not getting clicked actually, as it gets hung, and at times launching camera from lock screen also leads to this

im sorry to hear about that. Hey, have you tried factory reset? i really never experience those bugs. Have you tried repair using PC companion? Flashing would flashtool is better but repairing with PC companion also does the trick.

really sorry to hear about that. maybe you try downgrading to JB. If it still persist then maybe that's a hardware problem already. It's the first time i heard that bug really so that's the only thing that I can suggest.
