CM10.1 RC4 bootloader assert failed - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

My dad's GS3 has CM10.1 RC2 running on it, and he tried to update it to RC4 yesterday, but it gave him an error about the bootloader not matching. I ran
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
to check what his was, and it's I747UCALEM. Now, I've found lots of different stuff on here about bootloaders, but what I want to know, is whether it's necessary to update the bootloader just to upgrade to RC4? And one more thing, what's the best method, using ODIN or something else?
Thanks!
BTW, it's running ClockworkMod. Not sure what version, but it's fairly new.

Yes. It is required.
Check out the first section of the link attached. Thanks to Task, mrhaley & jiangyi

The bootloader update is mandatory for upgrading to any new version of cm10 or AOKP from now on.
There are several pages dedicated to doing this. It can only be done through odin

yes everything wiped.
4.0.2 -> 4.0.4 OTA is like lets say "Windows Vista to Windows 7 Upgrade" saves all data and stuff.
Factory Image is like installing Windows 7 as a fresh new start ("reformatting")

If you are doing the full factory flash you can use the toolkit - it is super easy and is useful even if you want to do the OTA update (I used it and the CWM non-flash method). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310
If you want to do the update use the methods here (I used method 2) and used the CWM from the toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170
how to root 4.0.4? i've tried temporary cwm + su.zip like i did on 4.0.2……with no luck……
su and superuser are installed but it cannot acquire the privilege, nor does it pop up the confirmation dialogue
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I guess the way to do this would be to
1: download the yakju-imm76d-factory-c6e807a1.tgz
2: extract the zip
3: copy the image-yakju-imm76d.zip to your SD
4: use clockwork to wipe/clean cache
5: use clockwork to install from SD file name (image-yakju-imm76d.zip)
6: Reboot
Clean image!!
or am I wrong?

I guess it's because of the secured kernel of stock rom. Have you tried custom kernel like franco's or Glados?
I want to try it myself but I'm at work.
EDIT: Beware though, franco said something along the line that his kernel does not work with 4.0.4 because of different propriety binaries. So a nandroid backup before is recommended.

does it really matter?? cuz if it does, google wont have OTA of incremental versions. and it is definitely ok for going up one by one without wiping anything.

[TOOL] == Secret Menu Exploit ==

YOU MUST BE ROOTED AND HAVE A ROOTED KERNEL INSTALLED FOR THIS TO WORK! NON-AOSP ROMS ONLY!
T-Mobile rooted insecure kernel HERE
AT&T rooted insecure kernel HERE
INTRODUCTION:
I originally was building a rom that enabled serial port in an attempt to repair IMEI but decided to make a universal tool to enable the exploit instead.
You can use this new menu to access a lot of new internal settings and you can enable DIag mode (serial port) for reading and writing settings via PST.
Should work on all sgs3 phones.
DOWNLOAD:
GALAXY S III EXPLOIT TOOL
INSTRUCTIONS:
-Simply run the tool with you phone connected and follow the instructions, its a one click tool. Enjoy.
If you appreciate this and would like to make a donation you can do so here:

UPDATE:
Simple no-root solution finished for backup/restore of IMEI finished!
Thread: HERE
This video will show you the exploit being ran and a serial port being established.
This is a big step as this enables reading the IMEI (among many other settings) via PST. Normally we can simply 'write' back whatever IMEI we want at this point; but that is not the case with this phone. When we find how to write back the IMEI, the IMEI issue will be resolved.
So,
Q: Is this a full IMEI solution?
A: No, this is me posting my work in progress along with a one click tool so that the community can help finish it up.

You can be rooted without an insecure kernel. Think he's saying you need an insecure kernel that will allow you to "adb remount" and get SU in adb shell.

Correct, the first command ran is (adb -d shell su -c "mount -o remount rw /system") It installs adw and then pushes a few things to system and a few thing to data, sets permissions and reboots phone. For the sake of a simple one click tool this will require the insecure kernel.
This looks cool can't wait to try it!!

I had this problem last night myself...turns out it was due to the version of CWM recovery I was running, which was v5.4.x.x, IIRC. I used adb to install the latest version of CWM, v.6.0.x.x IIRC and reattempted the flash and it worked fine.
noob question, but since CM10 doesn't have a Rogers version, are you using the AT&T one?

Unlock/Root

Hello everyone, I just got my hands on my new nexus and I LOVE IT!!. I'm on verizon.
I just have a few questions. I got it yesterday but I see there are new radios/bootloader?
I'm still on stock 4.04 ICS
I want to root/unlock and load up MIUI/AKOP
Can someone give me a small tutorial on how to do this? I see there's a toolkit but i'm confused on what to do because of JB dropping.

it works... but when it fails, it fails hard. and then you dont know where it failed or what it even did.
i personally will not help if you use the toolkit and things go wrong... others will still help.
It's actually very easy on this device. Since you know you are wanting to install a new ROM you don't even need to root. The hardest part is installing the ADB usb drivers and making sure they work correctly. There are basically 3 things you need to do.
1.) Install ADB and the ADB usb drivers
2.) Unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery (ClockworkMod is the most popular)
3.) Flash a new ROM
You can do steps 1-2 by following this guide up to the recovery install step. Then for step 3 download the ROM of your choice into the internal sd and boot into CWM recovery and flash.
Stupid question, can i do all of this if the phone isnt activated? My sim card should be here in the mail tomorrow

Was android restoring the default recovery because i was on stock ROM?

Does anyone have a recovery image made after latest OTA?

Hey everybody,
First off a few weeks ago I recieved the latest OTA update installed it and didn't think anything of it. Anyways recently I tried putting on a custom ROM and finally start messing around with my device. Apperantly though the latest OTA update has updated my hboot and radio version making it incompatible with all custom roms at this point, I think people are working on a fix, but I don't I don't know when or if that will come to light.
Anyways stupid me didn't make a backup because I didn't think I'd need it. I played around with my last two android phones (not htc and much easier to modify IMO) and never went back to stock. Anyways my question is, is does anyone have a stock recovery image made after the last OTA update? I'm assuming I could flash that and my phone would work? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what I really need and someone could help me at least get my phone working again? I appreciate any help I can get, thanks for reading guys.
EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention, I'm on virgin mobile in the US.

I don't want to say your wrong because I'm new at this, so forgive me If I'm just ignoran t , but I don't think that will work for me because I've already tried using the RUU and flashing it manually and it keeps telling me,
Hboot version is older!
Update Fail!
Press <POWER> to reboot.
It doesn't seem to be allowing me to flash a RUU with a older version of hboot, or I could be wrong but I don't know what I'd do differently this time.

That is true. You don't need to revert the radio. You need to install a stock kernel.

To clarify. Most if the custom roms include a sick or jmz kernel. These boot loop with the new radio. If you fastboot flash a stock kernel and a sense based Rom you will be ok.

Lol thank you for making me notice, kinda forgot the link
I think it won't let you run the ruu because you are dev unlocked. When you open the ruu exe file leave it on the welcome screen then search your computer for Rom.zip (it will be in a temp folder with a long name.) Grab the recovery.Img (or signed_recovery.IMG whatever its called) flash this on your phone via fastboot (fastboot flash recovery signed_recovery.IMG) now type fastboot oem lock. That will relock your bootloader. I think the phone turns off after that. Put it back in fastboot then type fastboot oem rebootRUU. Now run the ruu. I take no credit for this ill post the thread link when I find it
