The wifi direct option is now available on WIFI options when u scan for a wifi connection. The TV for example will appear as a option to connect directly with it via Wifi direct. The same option is available in the Xperia S.
How do i update if am already on ics and rooted with cwm :/

There is no option for wifi direct if not other device is detected in the wifi scan. Shouldn't wifi direct work between phones as well? On the Xperia P there is a wifi direct menu option in settings if I recall correctly (don't have mine with me to confirm)
WiFi direct is a tool that is used in a beam along with nfc. But yes you can send things between phones.

Correct NFC is used with Bluetooth. Wifi Direct in most sony products is just to interconnect with each other and share photos, movies, and music withouth a need of a wifi connection or a router. I used to work for Sony as a Product Trainer. For instance the Wifi Direct feature in the Xperia Sony Tablet S is the same as the ion and S, the TV for example will appear as a wifi connection option. As for in the Tablet S 2011 has a option to activated Wifi direct, which will be change soon with the ICS 4.0.4 release4 update that the new one already has.
Updated my sony to ICS 4.0.4. However, my sdcard has trouble. Status says it is empty or unsupported filesystem and gives me option to format. After formatting, it still says the same message and cycle continues. Anyone has experienced this? How do I get around this? Thanks,

Does anyone know if the File Sharing app included is compatible with any other phones, or just LGOG?
Has anyone tested android beam as well? Its not working for me when trying to send to my Galaxy nexus. I can receive just fine though.
Lastly, has anyone tried it the WiFi direct apps on Google play? The couple I have tried don't work for me either.
Thanks in advance.

Dears,
I'm really in need of a working WiFi direct for file transfer between phones which can't be done by Bluetooth due to heavy size of files. There is WiFi direct option available in settings but ain't available in the list of apps when I click on share via.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

You can share any file using wifi-direct, which in the end is what s-beam uses to transfer

Wifi-direct is a p2p connection so it does not require a router or network. It basically behaves like phone - phone Bluetooth Connection except it has the faster wifi transfer speeds.
If the other phone is not being detected, there is some security or setting that needs to be changed.
S-beam uses nfc to secure the p2p link and uses Wifi - direct to transfer.
Android beam uses nfc to link but uses Bluetooth to transfer.

A friend and I were playing with the wifi direct, and it took us a while to get it working properly.
We would turn on wifi and then go into wifi direct... It would scan and pick up the other person's device. Connect to it as you would bluetooth and then you can send files by going to the file you wish to send and long press-share via wifi direct, select the device you wish to send it to and off it goes. A 1.3GB avi file takes about 2 mins to transfer.

So connect to wifi direct first before selecting files. Noted thx

True enough. 40 files total size over 400mb in less than 1 min and half.

I know this is probably a noob question but what would be the maximum range you can use to transfer files between two Note 2's through wifi direct?

Not sure about the exact number, but it's longer than bluetooth. I haven't had any disconnections so it definitely works within 15-20m

how to use wifi direct.
i connected it to other grand but when i choosed something to share i had no option of wifi direct in share dialog
There is no option of wi-fi direct in share dialog as u said.. may be a bug or development side error from google..
try using third party applications like Superbeam.. which are far better than built in wifi direct..
