You can share any file using wifi-direct, which in the end is what s-beam uses to transfer

Correct me if im wrong but wifi direct u have to be connected to the same wireless network right cos i tried using wifi direct but when scanning it cant detect other phones. I do not wish to use wireless home networking.

Wifi-direct is a p2p connection so it does not require a router or network. It basically behaves like phone - phone Bluetooth Connection except it has the faster wifi transfer speeds.
If the other phone is not being detected, there is some security or setting that needs to be changed.
S-beam uses nfc to secure the p2p link and uses Wifi - direct to transfer.
Android beam uses nfc to link but uses Bluetooth to transfer.

Ok will try again tonight n revert back. Thanks again

A friend and I were playing with the wifi direct, and it took us a while to get it working properly.
We would turn on wifi and then go into wifi direct... It would scan and pick up the other person's device. Connect to it as you would bluetooth and then you can send files by going to the file you wish to send and long press-share via wifi direct, select the device you wish to send it to and off it goes. A 1.3GB avi file takes about 2 mins to transfer.

So connect to wifi direct first before selecting files. Noted thx

I know this is probably a noob question but what would be the maximum range you can use to transfer files between two Note 2's through wifi direct?

Not sure about the exact number, but it's longer than bluetooth. I haven't had any disconnections so it definitely works within 15-20m

which rom are you using? i had that problem before when i was trying wifi tether hack apps but i download a rom that actually had the hotspot hack which allow to use the sprint hotspot and that worked like a charm.
i also suggest you to try using ( Hotspot hack ) posting on the development section.
i hope that helped
Thanks guys. I'm using stock rom. When I had my evo, it worked like a charm.

I am having the same kind of problem; wifi tether does not work. I was on rooted stock rom, then Calkulin 1.5a. On the client side, I tried Ubuntu 11.10, Window XP, both detected the ad-hoc device, but just could not establish connection. I am using the hotspot hack, which work without issue.
I'm on add ROM with sprint hot spot and it works perfectly.

This is the best I can do for you.

Also, check your security settings. Some devices will not see a wireless network with security settings it can't support.
Rarely, because it's an international thing, channel settings can also prevent discovery. Just something to think about. Not that it should be an issue but may want to double check.

Android has issues with ad hoc sometimes. Certain devices like the Kindle fire can only use infrastructure based wifi due to the chipset used and/or the drivers included. Infrastructure mode is a more robust and stable network vs ad hoc too. I get about an extra 20' in range on infrastructure vs ad hoc. On infrastructure I can cover my entire 3600 sqft house with 1 access point getting 2-3 bars at the farthest end of the house, with ad hoc the back side of my house gets very weak or no signal at all. If your router/hotspot is capable I'd recommend settinf it up in infrastructure mode with the same ssid and security key (if you use one) and go from there

You said your phone's reception sucks at work. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong. Are you trying to get better data connection or phone connection? If phone, piggybacking off a router or PC won't help you to make calls if you can't now, unless you're using some form of voip on the phone. The SMS and phone voice run on the same line (I think). If you put the phone into airplane mode, but turned on wifi, you wouldn't receive calls or text. You'd only be able to do data. You have to be on a sprint tower to use the phone part.
Also, if you want your phone to get on adhoc and you can't now, you need a modified wpa_supplicant file for this phone. I don't know how to mod the file but a simple file swap and reboot would do it. At least that's how I did it with my original sprint galaxy 7" tab.

Reception is fine, it's just that data speeds at work are painfully slow. If I have a lot of apps to update on my phone, would be nice to just piggy back into the work network and do it that way.
My research has indicated that I'll need a modified wpa_supplicant, like you said, and I've tried some that are floating out there but they all seem to bork my wifi and I haven't been able to locate one specifically for the E4GT. Also, I have no idea how to mod it myself lol
Is there actually a Wi-Fi tether app that works for our phone? I've tried Wi-Fi tether from the market, and other devices will connect to my SSID and "tether", but it will basically be a worthless connection because I won't be able to surf at all from the tethered connection.
I'm trying to connect my Nexus 10 tablet since I get great LTE signal here in Dallas where I live, but I can't make full use of it since no tether app works properly with our phone...any help is appreciated!!

Here's the settings I used to make Wifi tether from the Playstore to work. Remeber either WIFI or the Wifi tether per reboot.
1.Change device profile to - Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
2.Setup method - Auto
3.Enable wifi-encryption
4. I changed SSID and my Passphrase
That's it. It's worked for stock JB and Imperium. Haven't tried it on Lifeless yet.
mine is on the Generic ICS/JB on wifi tether my SSID will show up but wont connect at all.

Is whatever you're trying to tether set to auto? Also, Wi-Fi cannot turn on at all after a reboot if you're on zvb. Try it on other things also to see if its the app, or whatever you're trying to tether.
Edit. Try going to settings, enable access control.

When I had this problem (at&t model but probably the same issue), I had to select a different lan in the wifi tether settings. Either the arp cache on the tethered device still had old entries (since the default network is the same as my wireless network that my device had just been connected to), or it's just that wifi tether applies the wrong netmask. Right now I'm using the setting "10.10.3.0/24" which works, but in reality it's assigning a 255.0.0.0 (/8) netmask to the interface!
As you all know there is no WiFi Direct option available in Xperia S, so I found an alternative to it which is an app called Super Beam which gives the same speed as WiFi Direct and is actually a lot simpler to use than WiFi Direct!
If WiFi Direct is not available, it uses the phone's hotspot to create a WiFi network to which the other device connects for receiving files.
But the best part is how simple and fast it is to use. I sent a file around 400mb in about 5 mins! Bluetooth is nowhere near to that!
There is also no need for pairing devices like WiFi Direct, the app does all this by itself using QR Codes.
Only disadvantage is that both phones need to have the app installed.
I really recommend this to all Xperia S users, since we do not have WiFi Direct option in our phones.

Yes all those apps are good too. And there are many more apps on the Play Store that give this functionality, but the reason I chose this one was because of its simplicity. You don't want to go through a whole lot of steps every time just to send a file, it should be quick and simple.
So easy... Thank's a lot for information.

Bluetooth tethering is a setting on the rom you are using. It cannot be enabled via app. Its been a while since I messed with my Bluetooth tethering but I can tell you it works very well. I don't have a link handy.
The main advantage is it is very low power. The connection is very seamless as well.

If you get internet on your one device then your easiest option is to get internet on your laptop and then create a hotspot on your laptop.
If your laptop is running windows 7 then you can follow the instructions from here.
