Change brightness? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Ran into a problem...
The phone won't seem to let me into the brightness options.
The whole thing is greyed out.
I checked to make sure that auto adjust tone is unchecked and power saver is off.
Anything I'm missing?
This is very strange.

Can you post a screenshot?
What about the brightness slider in the notification tray?

Keep softkey lights on?

I know this has probably been mentioned 1000 times but why doesn't anyone make an app that will let you manually turn the soft key lights on or off on a non-rooted dinc.
So many clock apps, etc have the option of forcing the softkey lights off, prove that it could be easily done since those apps are available for non-rooted dincs.
If anyone has a solution (other than the black e-tape one) please let me know. You can't see the buttons worth a crap unless the room is very well lit. in other words useless at night in the house with normal lighting. Yes I know I could cover the sensor with my thumb but there has to be a solution lurking out there somewhere.
thanks in advance.... johncal
There is. It's called Screen Filter. You can use it to do really low brightness (like when you use your phone in bed, not what she said ) and also manually turn softkey lights on or off. Actually, I'm not sure about forcing on, but it does turn off softkey lights for as long as you want.
Seriously, why do you want to turn them off? I sorta memorized the position of the softkeys.
I find the softkeys way too bright, so I've always used apps to turn them off in the past, never on.
In addition to trying Screen Filter as recommended above, give LEDs Hack a try. It's primarily designed to turn them off, but maybe the "ON" button will work... I'm really not sure.
For what it's worth, CM7 lets you control the softkeys. Specifically, if you go into the auto-brightness levels, you can turn them on/off for a given brightness level. From my experience, it seems that these settings stick even when you're not using auto-brightness. I turned off soft-keys at all the levels, and they stay off even when I'm not in auto-brightness.
With CM7, I no longer have to use Screen Filter for turning off the softkeys, but I do still use it to dim the screen very low.
I really want to keep the softkeys on not off. I'm also running a stock non-rooted rom. Phone's fine for me the way it is except that I just want the ability to keep the softkey lights on. I guess I'm just surprised that no one has come up with a solution for that.
Screen filter is for turning them off and unfortunately, LED hack is for rooted phones. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Where are the softkey settings in CM7? I looked under the autobrightness settings place but couldn't find anything.
Nightly 37 btw.

Menu > Settings > CM Settings > Display > Automatic Backlight > Edit other levels
Lower / Upper = readings from the light sensor
Screen = the screen brightness you want based on the lower/upper light sensor values
Buttons = whether or not you want the softkeys on. Unfortunately, they cannot be dimmed (hardware limitations, from what I've read), so 255=on and 0=off
In the default configuration, for example, if the sensor value is 0-199, the screen will be set to brightness 25 and the softkeys will be turned on. If the sensor value is >399, notice that the softkeys turn off (button value changes to 0). If you want the buttons on all the time, set all button values as 255. If you're like me, and you hate the softkey lights, set all button values to 0.

Byrong, youre the man. Did not know about this. Bye bye softkey lights. Thanks!

Two weird things I have noticed

Screen Brightness: I have set the screen brightness to medium and and timeout to 60 seconds. I have started to notice that it will change the settings on its own. I will notice the screen is dim then look at the brightness setting and it will be set to minimum. Another thing that is driving me crazy is that it will dim the screen if you don't touch it regardless of the screen time out.
I have also noticed that sometimes when typing the screen does not follow were the words are going.
Other than these two minor pet peeves I absolutely love this phone. If it had a vag it may replace my wife.
The screen dimming is probably done by u. If u run your hand back and forth at the bottom of the notification bar it will change your brightness. Auto brightness has to be off. Its a cool feature that the original epic had.

u might want to disable the "power saving mode"... i had the same issue as u, but it seems to be fine since i disabled power saving mode
That's the thing I have my settings to auto brightness off
Edit: I will try turning the power saving mode off
Did not know that about the notification bar dimming the screen that's a cool feature.

Thanks I bet the notification bar might be it. That is awesome, I can't believe I didn't know that yet.
IF your in the internet browser that came with the phone and you turn up your brightness all the way and then you notice while your look at page all of a sudden your brightness will go back down to like 10% I found out the culprit.
the browser has a BROWSER BRIGHTNESS option in the menu. you can turn auto on or theres another slider there and it appears factory setting is all the way left or lowest.
this was pissing me off today while I was waking in the sun, I thought I had my brightness on all the way but with in 5 seconds while look here on XDA, the brightness kept going back down on its own and I do not have auto on. the thing I was doing to get it back up bright again was to do the notification swipe to the right and that would only temporary fix it.

dimming

is there a dimming option on this phone?
sometimes after a real short period, the screen will go dim
but as soon as you touch any part of the screen it will go back to normal brightness
where is the dim setting for this?(to set the amount of time to wait before dimming screen)
When it dims, check under Settings > Brightness and see if it warns you about Overheating.
If it does, check my thread.
If not, it may be the power saving options also in Settings > Display.
While not a timer, you can make manual adjustments. Turn off auto brightness in display settings. Then, to increase or decrease brightness, place your finger on the status bar and slide it left or right.

[Q] Auto Adjust Screen Tone setting missing.

My Xperia ZL keeps dimming its screen automatically every time when the phone gets warm, it's very annoying since it happens on my previous Xperia S as well, I can't find "Auto Adjust Screen Tone" setting or check box in display settings.
How can or can I disable the Auto Adjust Screen Tone on my ZL?
As far I'm aware, It's in the Display>Brightness setting, and turn off "Adapt to lightning conditions".

There should be two different settings on android, Adapt to lightning conditions n Auto adjust screen tone.
tone

Did anyone see this new bug with new update ??the screen turns off before 30sec of inactivity
Sent from my C6506 using xda app-developers app
There are two factors that automatically adjust screen brightness.
First is based on ambient light. It will set backlight brighter if you are in brighter place, and dim it if you move to dark. It could be controlled or even disabled in "display" settings menu.
Second one is "dynamic contrast". It sets brightness of backlight based on currently displayed image. For example "dull", low contrast image will have backlight reduced to save power, while image with more contrast will have brighter backlight. This can't be switched off or controlled by any apps, from what I know even custom ROMs still have it on, probably it's hardware-controlled.

Help with brightness issue - S2 t989 running4.1.2

***Update***
The culprit was Lightflow. Had to deselect all "additional leds found". Me + google = victory.
Hello all, I'm hoping someone might know how to help me diagnose an issue I'm having with my brightness settings.
If I unselect "Auto" and set to max brightness, the screen gets nice and bright. But that's not a problem.
If I press the power button to turn the screen off, then press it again to turn the screen back on, the brightness quickly dims to a less bright value. All sliders, icons, settings etc. still register as being set at max brightness.
From what I can tell, the brightness is actually switching to the dimmest setting. The opposite of maximum brightness.
Any ideas? I'm new to logcatting, so might need some specific direction on the proper parameters to log.
T989 running Rushing's Lightspeed (4.1.2 base), and latest Tiberius 3.0.101 kernel. I've made some systemui xml tweaks for status bar and expanded status bar.
Let me know what other info I can provide.
Bump ... just realized the same thing is happening even when on auto brightness. Change the setting, all is good. Press power to turn screen off. Then press power to turn screen on, and within the first second, the brightness drops. Like something loads when waking the phone.
Any ideas where to start looking?
