After a dead battery earlier today, my phone is stuck at the 'X' bootup screen. The phone is rooted and has a custom ROM on it that I did not do myself, someone else did it over a year ago.
I got into recovery mode and clockworkmod recovery v6.0.0.5. I tried wipe cache which did not fix the problem. I assume that I have to do the wipe data/factory reset option, is that right?
If so, how can I get my pictures and videos off the phone first? A fuller backup with SMS and so on would be nice as well.
I did a 'Nandroid' backup just now in CWM and it completed successfully, but I don't know where it went, it talked about an sd card but of course there is none. I would think whatever backup I made will be wiped away if I do the factory reset option.
When I plug in the USB in this recovery mode, my PC says it could not install the drivers correctly. I tried installing the drivers from samsung's website and it did not help.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Ok, I have made a little progress I think. I got drivers and fastboot and adb files. I can now connect over fastboot in the bootloader and adb in clockworkmod. Now I am trying to figure out how to get my files.
Also I'm not clear on what is next. Can I just use the factory reset option in CWM and then everything will be fine?
Success! I used adb pull and got my entire sdcard directory which at least includes pics and vids.
Now what about SMS and MMS? And is there any chance of restoring all my apps and settings and everything? I assume that replicating everything would run the risk of just having another boot loop error! Not sure what to do or if I need to figure out how to flash a new ROM or what.

A factory reset erases everything on your phone EXCEPT nandroid backups and pics, music, etc on your sd card. You say you have no sd card but it is probably just not removable on your phone. Nandroid backups are saved on the sd card where they wont be erased. Texts, call history, etc are gone...just let them go, nbd. For future reference there are tons of apps that back up everything you want and you can set them to back up your stuff every day (titanium backup, eg).

Thank you so much for the replies.
To confirm: I now have to adb push a rom file to my sdcard and then install from CWM.
What I have been trying to figure out is whether there is a stock ROM I can flash using this method? If not some other rom will be fine.

not true.
a factory reset in a custom recovery leaves these items, if you had stock recovery, it would wipe the device.

if you want to flash the stock rom, use fastboot and the factory google images
you can adb push a custom rom over and flash it that way.

Well I was going to put my first ROM on (cyanogen) and something went wrong. I had done a Nandroid backup and when I try it says Error while flashing boot image. I can't get past the boot screen. In desperation I tried Wipe data/factory reset in Clockworkmod Recovery v2.5.0.1 to no avail. Can anyone help me outta this mess?
Anyone There ??
Can anyone help??
Make sure your battery is charged up enough, too low and nandroid will fail on most recovery versions but the latest amonra.
If that doesn't work look for a .img file to flash back to stock
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......
Where would I look for a .img file? On the SD?
If you can still wipe then you can get to recovery. Us the USB-MS toggle to connect your phone to your computer. Re-download a ROM's zip fie and try again. try something very stable, wipe, then reflash. It should boot fine. Sprintlovers is a good stable rom to work with. Just download, use USB-MS toggle to copy it to the root of your SD card, turn off USB-MS toggle, WIPE ALL! / factory data reset, then flash zip from SD card. Wait for that to finish and it will boot fine.
Here is a link to the sprint lovers download:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PXIYUNSY
and the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153
If you are using clockwork recovery I think the USB toggle is under partition menu, that or advanced.
Thanks so much. I'll try that, but I'm not sure what you mean by the USB-MS toggle. Would you mind expanding on that a little? I really appreciate it.
I just searched for it. I have a different recovery so the wording is different. Connect your phone to the computer while in recovery. Move down to the Partition menu and enter that. One of the options should be "Mount USB". Click that.
A folder should pop up on your computer showing the contents of your SD card. Copy the .zip file that I gave you the link to above to the SD card. Then disconnect USB.
Wipe or factory reset from the wipe menu. Then flash the .zip from the SD card. Then reboot the phone. It will take a few minutes to load, but should work.
I can't thank you enough! I was scared sh-tless that I'd bricked my phone. Wish I could buy you a drink!!!
Glad to help!
If that works make a nandroid backup immediately so if it happens again you can restore the working sprint lovers.
If you want to try cyanogenmod again re-download (could have corrupted before), and always wipe before you flash the .zip or it will bootloop.
Have fun!
You know what I'd really like to do is restore the Nandroid that I did right before I got into this mess. But I keep getting the " Error while flashing boot image" message. I'm charging another battery to see if that's the cause of the error. What do you think?
I'm not sure. Could be a battery thing. I know it does give an error if the battery is too low, but i don't remember what the message is. I think it won't do anything if it is less than 30%.

I got those errors a couple times when I first started out. I fixed it by flashing the rom I was running when I made the nandroid and then restored my nandroid over that.
Didn't I probably lose that ROM when I did the Factory reset?

No you don't lose your nandroid when you wipe back to factory. Your nandroid might be corrupt. It happens some times. I flash your custom ROM, set everything up the way you want it. Then do a nandroid backup. Copy that over to your PC to save space as it is a large file.
Hi, I'd like to know how to completely start 100% fresh on my Evo. Will that require me unrooting and rerooting? I'm looking to switch to CM7 from CM6 and keep it that way, I messed around with a ton of different roms and have folders all over the place, a lot of which are named oddly and I'm not sure if they're important system folders. How can I basically get my phone back to a fresh state?
Also, when doing wipes/backups, what should you be selecting? For instance you can backup the "defaults" selected for you or check them all. What situations would you want to have everything backed up? And same goes for wiping?
First, delete any folders on your sd card you don't need anymore, then copy the rest to your desktop computer and reformat the card.
If you rooted with unrevoked, use the unrevoked s-on tool tool, then flash the RUU for your phone, and you'll be back to stock, out of the box. It's just that simple. Then you can copy the folders/files back to your sd card that you know you're gonna need
There are plenty of guides with links to the files you need on here, just do a search.
Edit: nvm
But, would formatting the SD card do the same thing as deleting all the folders? (I don't need anything on it)
And one last thing. Should I do every update to my phone that I can before rerooting? Or leave it at pure stock before rooting again?
Looking to get the most updated files that I can and not have to overwrite CM a million times.

That depends. Do you want it like it was when you initially purchased it and want to return it to Sprint or just wiped clean? If it's the former, then yes.

Oh, I see. You will NOT have to lose root to do this. I suggest the following:
1. As already suggested, copy the contents of your SD card to a computer or external drive
2. Backup any of your 3rd party apps, if you haven't already.
3. Reboot into recovery and, if you're using amon RA v2.3, go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it, including the SD card.
4. Connect your device to your computer and then select the MS-USB option from within recovery. Afterwards, transfer CM7 and the associated gapps.zip to your SD card.
5. Flash the rom. NOTE: some people flash the gapps.zip immediately. I don't. After flashing the rom, I reboot to my homescreen. After a successful boot, I then reboot into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik and then flash the gapps.zip. After that, I reboot and sign in with my Google credentials.
6. Be patient during the initial boot process. You will appear to hang at the initial boot screen. Be patient.
Also, when doing wipes/backups, what should you be selecting? For instance you can backup the "defaults" selected for you or check them all. What situations would you want to have everything backed up? And same goes for wiping?

THE GOLDEN RULES:
If you make any changes to your current setup, go into recovery and make a nandroid backup and yes, you can use the default settings.
It is also good to have at least 1 backup of just your wimax keys saved to both your SD card and on a computer or external drive.
A. If you change roms, wipe everything except the SD card.
B. If you're updating a rom with a nightly build, wipe cache & dalvik.
C. If you're changing kernels, wipe cache, dalvik and battery stats.
D. If you flash anything else, wipe cache & dalvik.

wiping everything will get rid of all of the extra folders and what not that other roms have created and what not?
As for battery stats what is the "real" way to do that correctly?

I use amon RA v2.3 as my recovery and the option to wipe the battery stats is in the wipe menu near the bottom.
UPDATE: You can download amon RA's PC36IMG.zip from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
Place the file on the root of your SD card and then shut down your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. After a short pause, a few lines of text will flash across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install. Follow the easy prompt to install. Installation takes less than 10 seconds. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD CARD, if you haven't already done so.

I see, thank you.
Got CM7 installed perfectly clean, love having a fresh setup. Anyway, I'll have to un-root in a few weeks for a bit.
When I re-root again, if I wipe everything out can I literally just copy/paste my current setup (the one with CM7 before un-rooting from above) back into the memory after i re-root/re-wipe again?

The server error *shouldn't* have anything to do with your device. The error is more than likely on Google's end.

Yes, you can copy the entire contents of the SD card onto a computer and vice versa via a USB connection. As for the powersaver thing, the decrease in performance should not be that noticeable, however, it is designed to conserve power.

Ok I have made the stupidest and idiotic attempt to upgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.1 jelly bean on GSM Galaxy Nexus.
Basically, my phone was already rooted and unlocked, so I made a nandroid copy and off I went into recovery mode, trying to install the yakju zip file to manually update the firmware.
After I installed it and rebooted, it seems like it wasn't installed on some sort of internal storage that was only 66mb and I have lost my SD card and no user settings can be saved onto it. I realised this because if I went into recovery mode again and reboot normally, I will have to go through the initial setup all over again!!! At this point, if I tried to go back to nandroid copy, I could have done so easily.
BUT I made the mistake of trying to wipe all user data again and now everything on my SD card has been wiped out, including my nandroid copy and the ability to restore my nandroid back up!!! So if i tried to flash clockwork recovery image and restore, there is nothing in there for me to restore.... and I don't have access to the 13gb SD storage from phone or computer!!
Someone please help??!! At least I just want my old ICS system back!

you clearly didnt read post 3 of juba's guide
I'll try to sum Jubakuba's guide up for you.
1. Boot into bootloader.
2. Select recovery.
3. adb push a ROM-Zip-file from your PC to /data/media/ (adb push $(/path/to/ROM.zip) /data/media/
3.1 Reboot recovery. (adb reboot recovery)
4. Install it like you'd install any other ROM.

Sorry for my bad English.

Yip, i think he data wiped after flashing the up date = data gone and will have to start new.
Should still be able to see sd on computer.
Wiping data doesn't wipe the sd card, where did the upgrade come from? this may have wiped the card.
Try re-flashing a stock rom, root, unlock, flash recovery.
The GNex Toolkit makes it easy to do all these.

1) you formatted /data/media, no way to recover from that.
2a) if you wiped data, you're through. you'll need to start over (reinstall apps).
2b) if not, follow procedure below to push the same rom zip file to reflash. you should have all your apps back.
boot into recovery, hook up usb, use adb push /path/to/flashable/zip/folder/cwm_flashable.zip /data/media/ (rom, gapps or anything else, if needed), go to device, install zips, reboot, done.
keep in mind that if you encounter issues, you really need to start fresh (reboot, wipe data).
If you don't mind about losing data, you can just download factory images. Then just use bootloader to flash them. Absolutely no need to be worried about recovering from stuck logo.

My phone is currently totally F'd up and I'm planning to do an RUU but I want to get the pictures off of it first, is there any method of getting them off via TWRP or something? They are all on Internal storage so i can't just take them out and plug them into a computer. I've tried MTP transfer from it but it only allows me to do my SD card, is there some sort of ADB command or something to extract all of my internal storage or a certain folder to my computer? Anything at all? Even besides that?
Yes the internal storage is accessible, not messed up or encrypted or anything. Just don't know how to get the files off it without having a ROM (can't flash any until i RUU).
Don't use an RUU (yet)?
If you can get any ROM to boot, use that ROM to get your pictures. THEN run the RUU. If you can get to a working recovery, this should be doable.

No ROM will boot, or install, adb will not function properly, TWRP reboots randomly, half of the functions in TWRP are causing it to reboot, MultiROM has a couple partitons I think never got removed, it's quite bad. At the moment I am totally stumped at what to do to even consider 'fixing' this besides an RUU. I'm not stupid when it comes to fixing my phone either, I normally have minimal issues when fixing things but this one is just above my level in actually fixing it rather than just doing the simple way out (RUU). Oh and I can't flash anything via TWRP.
Soo in short I just want to get the pictures...then RUU. I have backups on my SD card to restore and if I can get the pictures then I'll already have a full internal storage backup & sd backup to restore if needed. The pics are the only things not fully backed up, i.e why I need/want them. Probably best I do an RUU anyways, I can't uninstall MultiROM to get rid of the partitions so the RUU seems to be my best bet.

Ouch. Unfortunately, a screwed up partition map is probably only recoverable by fully wiping the internal storage. I inadvertently did something similar to my daughter's Nexus 7, and the only resolution was reloading a factory image from fast boot. (since Google doesn't seem to do RUUs)
Maybe one of the Multi-ROM devs has a better solution?

It's more like I have 4 little partitions for the other ROM's that won't get removed unless I do the RUU anyways or at least get the phone functional enough to where I can remove them with MultiROM but as I said I just want the pictures and to rid of it. Once I get them or if I can/can't then i'll fully wipe it and probably do the RUU too. Just want to at least TRY to get them, if not it's whatever but worth a shot.
Oh and the 4 little partitions thing, thats only from what I know of how MultiROM works, I don't actually know 100% for sure if it really creates partitions. Quite sure it does though
Try
adb pull /data/media/0/
it should pull all files from internal storage
make sure you mount data in TWRP first before you run the command
or
you can try to flash TWRP as linked in my sig, it can mount your internal storage as MTP
or
search for qtADB ... it's a pc-android explorer... then browse to data/media/0/
you can copy whatever that you need with its copy function

Okay thank the spaghetti monster of doom that last one worked, got the pictures extracted safely. I tried getting my entire internal storage just in hopes I could 100% clone my old setup but it just keeps glitching and won't do it. Either way got what I wanted, attempting an RUU now . Thanks for the help!
Oh and just for informational purposes, I was already using his TWRP and that ADB command just did what every other thing I normally do in TWRP does, rebooted my phone after 2 seconds of it. It did manage to get 2 files but they weren't even what I wanted. Maybe if I did it more specifically it would've worked but oh well.
Updaaaate!: Got everything back as it should be via RUU, Nandroid Backup, & backed up Internal Storage from 8/11/14 along with the Pictures you helped me get!
