My device is currently rooted on GB28. I was able to use a nodata version. If I want to be able to flash ROMs, from what I understand I need to flash a custom recovery, preferably EL26, before flashing the custom ROM. If I need to always flash the recovery first, then will I always end up wiping my data every time I want a new custom ROM? If so how do people easily restore the data like it was before a wipe?

The preferred way to get cwm prior to flashing roms is indeed el26, due to the fact that it is a safe kernel to flash and not worry about the Emmc bug. Some roms you can do a dirty flash over, but most require a clean install to prevent conflicts that could cause you to bootloop. For restoring data, Titanium Backup is what I use to save and restore all my downloaded apps. I don't particularly if I lose text/calls, but if you are, there are apps on the play store that allow you to save those as well. Tb has that feature as well, but as I said, I don't save those, so can't speak for them. Flashing new roms gives me an excuse to clear out my old texts, calls, etc, lol. Once you flash a custom rom, you can flash build appropriate cwm kernel to go with it that has cwm so the next time you flash a mod, tweaks, etc, toy wont have to flash el26 again. Just boot into recovery, wipe cache/dalvik, flash mod, reboot, enjoy. Good luck, hope that helps.

I am not sure how installing a new custom ROM and kernel affects my device (R900x), but I already have root and unlocked the bootloader. Will I lose any of my data (music, contacts, etc.) if I flash DooM's Kernel and the FTS rom? And how should I backup data (preferably through CWM), even if installing a new kernel/ROM doesn't wipe everything?
The main reason I am doing this is because I constantly get software update reminders and I have to shut off my wifi/data in order to stop getting notified, because it will no longer let me click the "Remind Me Later" option.
Make a backup anyways
You wont lose data for kernel
but for Custom ROMS to be 100% functional i reccomend you make a backup and WIPE DATA
Thank you.
I also need help flashing FrAsErTag's FTS ROM. Can someone confirm these steps?
Backup data.
Flash UK-Generic firmware.
Factory reset data.
Get root. (Do I need to unlock bootloader and get root again after flashing the generic FW?)
Flash DooM's kernel.
Flash FTS ROM.
Run CDMA, Facebook, and gapps patches (CWR).
Restore data.
just do what the instructions tell you in his first post.
Well I'm not sure how to do it exactly, but I think I'm going to see if I can flash the full 2.3.3 update manually with FlashTool before I do anything else. I have an unlocked bootloader though, will manually flashing the update brick my phone? Thanks again for your help.
Ok I've been using Cyanogenmod 7 on the Xperia Play and I want to flash back to the stock ROM, do I just simply flash with Flash tool or there are precautions to be made.
Does the stock ROM need a specific baseband, etc
You should be fine, flashtool really takes care of everything, obviously the one thing you do need to do is back up your apps and data (as I would reccommend not carrying over old data/settings). If you wanted to be really safe you can go into CWM and clear your cache, davlik, etc. just to be sure any incompatiable settings arent brought over. But take a nandroid backup before, so if something does fail you can just fastboot a kernel and restore to try again.
This is my first custom flash off stock. I have actually had some experience flashing due to accidently flashing from LH9 to LG1, which doesn't work. So I had to install TWRP, do a factory reset, root it, and install LH9 from there.
But I plan on trying out CM10 and I have a few question.
A) Can I just flash CM10 in ROM Manager since it is built in?
B) How can I keep my apps, app data, account data, folders,settings...etc? I have both CWM Pro and Titanium Backup Pro installed.
C) Is there anything that is worse in CM10 than Touchwiz?
D) If I don't like CM10, I can go into CWM ROM Manager and just restore my Backup, correct?
To be honest you need to flash it and give a shot and see what you think, everybody loves something different.
Download from the cm10 build from the link in the xda thread and also get the 10/12 gapps.
Boot to recovery and make a NANDROID BACKUP!
When you install, you will need to do a full wipe.(Wipe Data/Wipe Cache/Wipe Dalvik/Format System in that order to be safe
Flash the cm10 rom and the flash the 10/12 gapps.
Then Reboot!
And enjoy the goodness!
I love CM10 or AOKP much better than TW, just my opinion.
Hope this helps!:cyclops:

QnA bud. Good to see you're starting to flash tho.
I've tried many, many ROMs on my S3 but I keep going back to CM10. Even though it's not a stable release for my model it's still awesome
Couldn't I just use ROM Manager since CM10 in on there and wipe data and cache?
Isn't the CWM ROM Manager backup a Nandroid?
How could I keep my apps and most my data...etc?
I appreciate your help, but I was knew how to do it in that way
Use Titanium to backup all your apps & data, boot to CWM recovery take a backup and install CM10 then restore your apps from Titanium, should be that easy!
Yeah, perhaps you guys don't use it, but my question remains. I've backed up using ROM Manager and transferred that image to my PC for an external copy. Couldn't I just install CM10 using ROM Manger as it is supported? Isn't that backup a NANdroid?
Or is it just not preferable?
Thanks for any help guys/
Can someone please answer my questions?
rom manager simply boots into recovery for you and makes the backup itself, etc. however, if you want to do more (wipe /system, etc) you need to go into recovery manually and do it.

So basically I should can ROM Manager to upgrade CM10 or restore, but not flash new ROMS?

i'm confused by your wording, sorry. rom manager would be suitable to your needs. it can install a rom for you, but it will only wipe data/factory reset. it will not wipe /system or dalvik cache like so many installation instructions say to do. rom manager can backup your rom and restore your backup.
so yes, you can use it if you choose to, but learning to use cwm would probably be easier in the long run than needing to rely on an app.

they are either on the internal sd card or one that you inserted into your phone. you won't lose any data on those.

You should really do some reading over in the development section. They're full of information that can answer all these questions you have.

I've tried StockCWM-EL26 and Philz Touch. Both make nandroid backups without errors and restore without errors. But when I boot up after restore, I get constant popups for apps missing and crashing.
I'm to the point were I don't want to flash anything because if something happens and I want to go back, I have to start from scratch every time.

You should not use Philz to backup or restore. I have only used Philz to flash. Once I am on the ROM, the ROM's custom recovery is sufficient enough to do backups and restores. Most of the ROMs have a custom recovery already installed. Let's say you wanted to flash villuminati. You would use Philz to flash the ROM and Gapps. Once you rebooted into recovery again, you should be on CMW. You don't need anything else. In my time of being here, I have only used EL29 to get from AGATs recovery. AGATs is not good for flashing ROMs, so most ppl use EL26 or EL29. Try it this way and see if everything works. Remember, Philz should be used only to flash, never for backing up or restoring. Let me know how it works out.
I'm currently on stock JB and everything runs fine. I need a recovery I can flash to make a nandroid of my current setup, before flashing another rom.
In my experience with my previous phone, once I found a custom rom that I liked, I pretty much never needed to make a nandroid for that rom. But I need a reliable way of restoring my current stock setup.
I actually don't intend to use Philz for anything ever again. I was already aware that it wasn't good for backups, but the last time I used it to flash Liquid Smooth ran into a bunch of trouble. I didn't like the way the rom was running, so I booted into recovery and flashed Philz to use it's convenient "wipe for new rom" to make sure everything was clean for restore (I like that it deletes .android-secure on both SD cards.) Then I needed to flash StockCWM-EL26 to restore the nandroid, but when I tried to do that I just got an error 7. I tried flashing different recoveries, roms, modems. All gave errors. Philz wouldn't do anything. Had to hook phone up to the computer and flash StockCWM-EL26 using odin. Then I restored the nandroid, booted up and everything was fubar. Hooked up to PC again, flashed stock image using Odin, and set everything up from scratch.

The one thing I found out about these phones, is one thing may work for me buy not for you. It is the nature of the beast. Glad you were able to get things back up and running. Don't get discouraged. You should keep a copy of the one-click on your PC just in case you need to get back to stock. I have both the FL24 and GB27 for that specific reason.

For context, I want to clear up a few things before trying to root so I don't end up bricking the phone.
So after reading a few threads it seems even recovering via twrp is messed up in this phone. Can someone shed some light on this matter?
Can I restore system, data, and boot partitions via twrp in case something goes wrong (while staying on official miui roms everytime, I don't intend to install custom roms) and I have to revert the phone back to the state it was in at the time of a backup?
It feels like at the very least we would be required to re-flash the entire firmware via mi flash tool and then restore whatever is needed via twrp later. Will this work?
Also I hear using twrp to install the official firmware is not a good idea, what's that about?
I know long post and a lot of questions, so please bear with me.
Thanks.
Custom ROMs and Stock ROMs differ in one aspect, which partitions are left untouched. Since stock ROM is a lot more invasive and formats all partitions, official flash method is recommended.
When you mess things up, mi flash tool is safest option. Its safe to experiment, backup, restore on boot+system+data in TWRP across ROM installs but don't mess up recovery partition. Remember to format data between ROM installs unless dirty flashing on same android version
