Up until about a month ago, my simple PPTP setup worked just fine.
- Asus stock firmware on my RT-N56U router
- Stock VPN client
I'd been using it flawlessly up until it stopped working. I now get "unsuccessful" when I try to connect over 3G/HSPA. Wifi from any external ISP works 100%.
I've not upgraded my ROM or firmware on the router or installed any VPN client/server software.
The fact that it works over WIFI but not TMO makes me think they've changed something on their network.
I'm as wet behind the ears as it gets when it comes to VPN configuration - which is why the simpler and less secure PPTP appeals to me.

Title says it all.
All of the 2.2 roms and kernels I have tried will connect to the VPN but must screw up the routes as they shut off my data.
Does anyone have this running?
the only issue i have with "VPN Connections" is that is doesn't pass DNS traffic correctly. hence, i must connect via IP Addy not DNS name. other than that it works fine for me. i'm able to establish a vpn connection then use the WYSE rdc/vnc app to connect to my windows or linux servers ... connnectbot for shell access.
I've also been unable to connect to either a PPTP or IPSec VPN over my 3G connection since upgrading to the official release of 2.2 on my EVO 4G. The connection appears to be established just fine, and the VPN server shows that my VPN client is connected, but I cannot ping to or from the device, nor access any internal resources from it. This is a serious bummer considering that things worked fine under 2.1. Will test over WiFi when I get home. Can't test it at work since we're behind a proxy (which is another gripe I have with Android right now... seriously Google, no proxy configuration options?).
i feel i should clarify the name the application i'm using to establish a vpn tunnel is not the stock android vpn application.
it is called "VPN Connection" http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.codeandroid.vpnc_frontend

I have some interesting info regarding VPN behavior. With 2.1, of course, it did not work. Here's what I experienced: I rooted my 2.1 with Unrevoked (not a full root) and then I installed OMJ's (8/6?) Froyo and lo and behold, my encrypted PPTP VPN to a MS 2003 server was working perfectly. I assumed that 2.2 resolved the vpn issues. Since I thought 2.2 was a fix, I didn't hesitate to install another ROM. This time, though, I also did a NAND root and installed another 2.2 rom; whose, I don't remember. My VPN was gone. What I discovered was that I COULD connect to an unencrypted MS PPTP server, but still not my encrypted VPN server at work. So, here we are today. I'm running Vael-Pak non-sense rom and after I loaded it I had no vpn, but here's the thing...a couple of days ago I was poking around inside some of the Evo's networking files, I didn't change anything, I just opened them and looked at them with Text Editor, and since then my encrypted PPTP VPN has been working great. I'm very hesitant to reboot my phone because I fear that it won't work anymore. Right now I'm happy.
I'm trying in vain to get VPN connections working too. The only ROM that I had it working with no problems was Cyanogenmod's. All the others don't seem to have it supported in the kernel. Now I'm running a ROM based on the stock 2.2 but haven't found a fix yet.
I'm in the same boat - my pptp vpn worked fine in stock 2.1, but not in stock 2.2...

I can't get a pptp (haven't tried l2tp) to connect from my unrooted 2.2 evo with encryption enabled. I'm trying to connect to my server at home running winxp pro with the default winxp vpn server setup.
Works fine if you disable encryption. But what's the point if it's not encrypted, right? It works fine with encryption using a laptop or my old iphone3G. Seems to be a bug with android.
I'd like to know if someone finds a workaround.
This worked in 2.1 - froyo broke it

I am in the same boat. On CM6 VPN works flawlessly, but it is missing a lot, and kept crashing on me.
On every other ROM and kernel with tun.ko, it says it is connected but no connectivity.
AVA V6 is fast, good battery life, everything works (including hulu, and blockbuster) and very stable, but the only single thing I can't get working is Cisco VPN!!

I am curious, does anyone have VPN working on any Froyo ROM besides Cyanogen?
If so what Rom/kernel are you using?
Interesting observation last night - 4g was temporarily working in sf, and my pptp vpn worked over it. I turned off 4g and retested, pptp vpn didn't work over 3g...

Ok here is a good one for you.
I have wifi at home, when I got my omnia 7, linked it up and all worked fine. Then last week it stopped working, I cannot even connect, it comes up incorrect password when it isnt.. Dont know why...
Tried - tested:
1) Phone will connect to other wifis fine
2) Reset router, password, security everything
3) swapped router
4) My pc can connect to the router fine over wireless.
5) Tried connecting from 2m away, nowt.
Only thing I aint done is factory reset the phone, which I wouldnt want to do unless last resort.
Any tips.

Only one thing looks interesting and that is aes and but the router i have sky broadband does not have this option and I connect to my mates sky broadband router (netgear) fine.?????
I had problems connecting to DD-WRT flashed netgear routers.. Seems the WRTG54g2 v1 + have pretty shady chipsets. Flashed back to oem firmware and works like a charm, just lose some of my dd-wrt features
what router are you using? I know my DIR-628 did not like my LG KM900 arena no matter if it was connected to the WAP in the basement or directly to the router
Hello. I have xperia neo for 1 week. It is great phone and great upgrade from my X8 but i see a strange wifi problem. My firmware is latest version - 4.0.A.2.368.
At my home phone connects fine to my wireless network and everything is stable. I do not see any disconnects, reboots or other problems. My router is linksys wrt320N and i connect at wireless N speed - 72Mbps.
When i try to connect to the wireless N network at my office the phone connects fine but i do not have internet access. I have IP assigned by the router, network is shown as connected but i do not have connectivity. I tried with 3 different browsers and with the market and nothing connects. At the same time i can connect with my laptop to the same network and i have internet. My colleagues with other phones also connect and have internet.
I tried setting static IP address on the phone but this did not help. I read that if i set static IP in router's settings assigned to the mac address of the phone this will help. Unfortunately i can not test this because i do not have access to router's settings. Also at my home i did not make such settings and everything is working fine.
Previously i have seen this problem with my X8 and the same work wifi network but it was not always present. It was present with some custom firmwares and not with others.
If you have any ideas or have seen this problem please help.
Having the same device from Globul I never had such problems for the 2 weeks I'm using it. I had some disconnects but i put the blame on my router.
if you can try changing the wifi channels
I think I've found the issue (by facing by myself)
The version neo is shippe (2.3.2) has a serious bug on AES encription.
Actually only the upgrade to 2.3.3 (no clue about upcoming 2.3.4) can fix the WPA/AES issue.
So the actual solutions are:
or change your wifi securty to WEP, updathe the phone via OTA
or use the Windows Software and update to 2.3.3.
Please note that if you use the Control Power widget it has been removed in 2.3.3
This was my problem when I had just bought my Arc.My phone couldn't surf the internet with my personal wifi network although I tried to use many browsers and also Android market. Then I reset and reinstalled my router, everything works well ^^
Ask your office IT staff to do a simple power cycle on the router and try connecting again. That may solve the problem.
Does Vpn work using 3g on this phone?
Om my gnote it does not work...
Hey,
Not sure if you are still wanting the answer to this question but I can't get l2tp to work. Keeps giving me a timeout. Use to work on my gingerbread phone.
Seems to be an issue with ICS:

I've got a fully working LT2P/IPsec tunnel going with my RouterOS box as the server. It works fine over 3G.
no problem here for VPN with IPsec, working like a charm with my company (Exchange) emails.
I have a Rogers M8 that I have converted to a GPS currently with 5.0.1 from here.
It's been running seamlessly for quite some time.
I just tried hotspoting it. Everything appears to be working.
I'm using a mac, when I connect to the hotspot everything looks good. But no Internet connection.
I tried an nslookup Google.com and was Refused.
Any ideas?
Oh, and fwiw, my network provider (roam) does not block tethering
Check to see your mac is authenticated in the hotspot. Its a mini router so it should work almost the same.
Also try another device to check whether or not its just the mac thats causing an issue.
