This may be a stupid question, but can someone tell me what's the difference between R800i, R800a and R800x?

R800x is the CDMA Verizon Wireless USA variant, and is currently unrootable, but runs stock vanilla Android.
R800i is the original GSM variant sold over in Europe and the UK.
I'm not entirely sure about the R800a, my brain is giving me conflicting stories about Taiwan/Singapore, and Canada Rogers versions.... I could be ENTIRELY wrong on that though.
One is for verizon, one is for some other US network and the R800I is for the rest of the world i think
Models so far?;
r800i (uk, europe, australia, new zealand, asia?)
r800a (canada rogers, mexico + also asia?)
r800at (usa at&t)
r800x (usa verizon)
Z1i (china?)
They all have the same specs internal memory, processor e.t.c
In Mexico we get r800a too. With all the sony experience.
So the models depend on the location or the providers.

Both. In the case of U.S.A you guys get R800x for Verizon and R800at for At&T

I would say model depends on providers since anyone using gsm is likely to get the R800i or R800a anyone using cdma is gonna get the R800x or R800at.
The only difference in GSM and CDMA is gsm phones have a simcard, CDMA phones dont have simcards your account information is programmed onto your phone. Dunno if the CDMA xperia plays have R-UIM cards though? CDMA is supposed have have faster data transfer speeds (internet) up to 700kbps (EVDO). Gsm is roughly 400+kbps (HSDPA)
Gsm is world wide and CDMA is mainly usa and some parts of asia
I thought there was a dev model as well whats that one called?
Saw someone talking about it somewhere

The only difference between the R800a and R800i is the HSDPA radio frequency set. You can buy both in Australia as both frequency sets are in use by various carriers.
R800i works on 900MHz and 2100MHz
R800a works on 800MHz 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz
Firmware images are compatible between R800i and R800a.
Both are incompatible with R800x as far as I know.
I don't know about the R800at.

R800at isn't CDMA (its another GSM Variant). Interestingly, although it seems to do nothing and has a plastic bit inserted in the way, the CDMA (R800x) version does have a sim-card slot, and if you go into some of the diag screens, you can turn on GSM... I haven't tried getting a prepaid sim to see if it works though. So the R800x might just have both if we are lucky, however I doubt its fully enabled in the kernel level.
R800i is also Oceania ( AUS/NZ )

Thanks for the info. I was sure R800i & R800a are GSM and i knew R800x was CDMA wasnt sure about r800at so i just presumed it was CDMA as well
I cannot remember the post but i think someone has tried a sim card in the r800x and said that it has been fully disabled.
I'm in Singapore, R800i's here as well - nice thing about buying a phone here, all are carrier unlocked / government considers it illegal [monopoly] for carriers to sign exclusive deals... although I might get caned for exporting them.
Same here. No companies should be allowed to lock phones to their networks.
However some companies have been cheeky and released different phones that don't support the other carriers cell tower transmission.
I can confirm the R800at is the AT&T version. It even has the AT&T boot animation and comes loaded with 2.3.3.
I got mine in the mail today off ebay. So far, I am really enjoying it. I get H+ as my connection icon, and which is different.

You can root the Verizon model. If it is on anything higher than 2.3.3 you just have to flashtool back to 2.3.3 and then run super one click.

Im aussie too and the 800i is/was sold here for the optus/vodaphone network. You can use the 800i on telstra but you can only get 2g, no 3g goodness due to the frequencys used.
Just wondering if this comes factory unlocked? planning to buy it off either rogers/fido to use it with wind mobile, but i've looked on rogers site and it says its not pentaband, and as far as im aware this is a pentaband phone. also, does telus have a completely different version because they have their own posted on gsmarena
thanks for helping
Yup they are all unlocked Pentaband so you should have no problems
Is this phone ever coming to United States Tmobile?
You can use any GSM xperia play model to connect to TMobile using the correct sim card and APN's.
Your phone will need to be unlocked to change the APN's.
The GSM models are R800i R800a and r800AT.
If your tmobile plan includes 4G then id suggest the AT as its AT&T 4g model.
yea but tmobiles hpsa 4g will not work right? you just get edge speeds i though?
That depends, I believe you can achieve 4g speeds if you buy the AT&T Branded R800AT xperia play. Since it is a 4g phone. But you'll have to wait for someone with better knowledge, I use straight talk.
Don't get the r800at model expecting 4g, its not going to work. ATT and Tmo have different frequencies for 4g. I'm on Tmo too and I'm stuck with edge speeds
I would get the r800i model, at least you can unlock the bootloader on that for free
Like above, you can't get 3G for T-Mo with any of them, which would require 1700/2100 band.
T-Mo is doing a deal with ATT to use their 1900 3G band for roaming, but I don't think it means you'll get 3G by default with T-Mo.
You should get the i version which lets you easily unlock the bootloader to install custom rom.
is the phone going to officially come to tmobile?
Hey jsut wondering if anybody on this site is in the Ontario area and where they got their phone + when..
I cant seem to find an xperia play that works on local frequencies.
I recently received the one i ordered off Amazon. But it is not accepting my SIM, it cant even be unlocked cuz its an international phone..
Is there anything I can DO?
These are the frecuencies supported by Xperia Play in its GSM version:
GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900
UMTS HSPA 900, 2100 (Global except Americas)
UMTS HSPA 800, 850, 1900, 2100 (Americas)
Probably the UMTS frecuencies for America are supported by the R800a and the other ones by the R800i.
If you need a R800a and you have a R800i maybe you can flash a R800a rom to modify the supported frecuencies. Search this issue in the forum, you could find something about it.
Try flashing the R800a firmware and see if the phone will accept the card. Otherwise you are out of luck. Should have bought an R800a from rogers and simply unlock it.
I dont think this will work as an R800a can flash an R800i firmware and the frequencies still run on the R800a frequencies.
Edit: I bought my phone off someone from Kijiji for $200 a year and a half ago. It was locked to Rogers. I bought an unlock code for it and unlocked it. Then put in my Bell SIM card and input the Bell APN for data/MMS. Then I got my bootloader unlocked. So I am using a Rogers R800a, with a Bell SIM running MIUI v2.9.21 r1 from cosmic DAN.
Hello guys! I'm using the I747M variant which I bought from Rogers about 8 months ago and I want to know if I can switch to other carriers network here in Canada via unlocking because Rogers' available phone plans are just a pain in the ass so I want to switch networks. So please kindly share any information regarding unlocking and changing carrier networks. Thanks in advance

Once unlocked, It is guaranteed to work with Bell and Telus.
Hope this helps :good:
Search for it, it's around here in the forums for free. You just need a simcard from the next provider you wish to go to.

How about on other networks such as Mobilicity? My mom is on a plan on Mobilicity and I also want the same plan because my phone is kinda useless without internet and not even a caller ID.
once unlocked it'd most likely work
but for the data part, i can't really say because different mhz on different carrier network..
so 70% chance that you will only get Edge in your area
Does anyone knows any information on how to change radio frequencies on a phone? I've seen some SG3 on ebay.ca that is labelled as "Pentaband" and could work with any carrier network here in Canada. Can someone please explain to me how does this work? And is it possible for my phone to be converted into a "Pentaband" phone?
Mobilicity does not use the same bands as Rogers, Bell or Telus for its HSPA/HSPA+ service. As Pcshano said, your phone would work on Mobilicity, but only on Edge.
You encounter the same problem as T-Mobile users in the US, and WIND and Videotron in Canada. See [WIP][BOUNTY] Enable 3G on 1700MHz for ATT Galaxy S3 i747 on efforts to enable HSPA on 1700MHz on the i747.
