[Q] Need help accessing bootloader! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is an HTC Desire C, with 4.0.3 Android OS and HTC Sense 4.0. Straight to the problem - I'm following HTCdev's guide to unlock bootloader (for obvious reasons), and basically the problem is that it doesn't seem to work for my phone. I can get into HBOOT easily, that's not the problem. The problem is: I go to FASTBOOT with the power button, I select BOOTLOADER, but when I want to open it with the power button, it just goes back to the FASTBOOT menu each time I try... or is that supposed to happen?
SORRY. NEW HERE - WRONG SECTION. MODS, PLEASE DELETE.

[Q] Bricked htc desire Help Needed Please!

Hi my power and volume buttons of my HTC desire failed so i opted to install a custom rom so i could change the wake up key from power to the menu key.
I downloaded rom manager and clockworkmod and installed CM7 via the rom manager download page. after restarting and backing up files and installing it now is frozen at the CM7 loading screen. I have been told this is a bootloader loop or something like this.
My problem is I cant recover my old OS because the power button and volume buttons are still not working so I need a windows based solution to recover my phone with maybe fastboot or adb.
Any help on what rom i need and the commands i need to type would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Michael
Hi Michael,
are you still stuck at the bootanimation? What is the state of your desire? How did you root, are you S-OFF?
To use commandline based tools, you have to get into fastboot first. Fastboot commands only work, if you are S-OFF.
Some more info would be useful.
Regards,
Markus
Thanks for your quick reply. yes i can get into fastboot and hboot and fastboot devices does return my device ID. I hope that means my phone isnt beyond help. I used clockwork and unrevoked to root my phone. Just seen it is s-on can i change this with adb or fastboot
bravo pvt3 ship s-on
hboot-0.93.0001

Is all the info my phone is dispalying but i might be able to get more from adb or fastboot if that will help
You can't flash anything via fastboot, if you still have a stock HTC HBOOT (S-ON). Can you also get into CWM recovery? That would be my choice. CWM recovery can give your windows pc sd-card access. Put a working ROM (*.zip) to the root of your sd-card, wipe everything via recovery and start over with a new flash (install *.zip from sd-card in recovery). You are miles away from bricked... everything will be ok.
Is this your first custom rom experience?
I cant use cwm as my volume and power buttons aren't working. I have rooted it ages ago and installed a custom firmware but didnt like it as it was missing the htc specific stuff and restored it fine using the recovery option but now without the afore mentioned keys working I cant get to the recovery options. Im guessing adb or fastboot cant set my s-on to s-off then.
If you can connect via adb you might want to try "adb reboot recovery". If you have CWM recovery in place (unrevoked should have installed this) you can navigate with your trackpad and don't need vol up / down / power. But I think your phone has to be booted up to receive adb commands.
I get device not found with all adb commands.
I get various different resonses with fastboot commands Ie fastboot devices shows my device. fastboot reboot turns my phone off and on and fastboot reboot-bootloader brings me back to the screen im on at the minute.
My track pad is not moving anything on my phone what is weird about my phone is my volume buttons were working for volume control (before i flashed it) but they weren't turning the pages of my kindle books any more. that happened after my power button problem arrived.
Your trackpad would work in recovery, but your not able to get there. You're stuck at the bootloader options, where you have to navigate with vol up / down / power button. What still will work is flashing of a stock HTC ROM via RUU. You can get signed HTC RUUs here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667. This will wipe your phone and revert it back to stock (no root, no custom recovery).
This sounds promising. Question 1 for me and others that may follow this thread in the future. What is RUU and if i download a vodaphone rom will it be locked to vodaphone as my phone was a vodaphone when i got it but it was unlocked atthe time and I have it on O2 now

RUU = ROM Update Utility
It has integrated flash tools and will reset everything to factory defaults. If you want to send your phone in to service, you should flash a ROM which originally came with your phone (Vodafone branded??). Branded ROMs have nothing to do with locking your phone to a carrier (SIM-lock). They are just customized by different carriers with more or less modifications (i.e. preinstalled apps).
Hope you have some luck with RUU, I have to sign off for today.
im downloading the ruu bravo vodaphone uk one its an exe so i figure i put my phone in fastboot mode and run the exe. is that right
Ok thanks for your help markus i will post if this works so others can see its a working method if they have a similar problem
How did you get on? Is your desire up and running?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
just about to run the app now domey. I have my phone in fastboot manu with usb plugged in. wish me luck lol
That's how it should work. I hope it will work for you. You can redo rooting / customizing, once you have a booting device
Have a look at LeeDrOiD 2.3d then (leedroid.com). It's based on HTC Sense ROMs, very stable and you can push your trackpad to wake up the phone.
I got an error with vodaphone one so trying a newer one now as vodaphone was 1.4 or something the next one im trying is 2.29
Did you get some useful error messages?

returning to stock

Hello All,
my desire hd recently decided to break down (the volume rocker wont work, wifi and bluetooth).. althought its still under warranty and i would like to restore it back to normal before i bring it back to vodafone..
however since the volume rocker wont work, how can i restore back to stock rom? or am i really sc**wed? i believe i am, unless proven wrong?
thank you in advance
You don't really need the volume rocker to get back to stock. Here's some short instructions from this thread. Remember to use a branded RUU if your phone was branded when you got it.

To go back to S-ON(/STOCK):
Flash stock ROM (RUU)
Temproot using Visionary
Use my tool, do Stock CID and S-ON (enter brand CID if you had a branded device, see second post)
Enjoy your factory-state phone

sorry to disturb you again
but to restore the stock rom, i need to get into bootloader,
i cant select stuff from the boot loader as the volume rocker doesnt work?
is there a way i can get around this?
thanks
If I remember correctly there's no need to get to the bootloader. You run the RUU on the computer with the phone connected to HTC Sync.

That is true. Another option is to connect your device to a PC, get my radio s-off tool (for example), go to it's folder in command line and type command "adb.exe reboot bootloader".
If all you want is to get into recovery, you can use Rom Manager to boot you into recovery.

[HOW-TO] UNBRICK HTC t328w (DESIRE V) cable-free method using RUU!!!

PLEASE STICKY IF THIS IS HELPFUL!!!
ALSO ON THE HTC ONE V FORUM (since this phone is like a hybrid of that and this, the desire....and doesn't have it's own dedicated forum hahaha)
Hello Everyone, just yesterday I was messing with gapps on my HTC t328w (since it's a chinese phone, it didn't not come with gapps, so I had try to flash them myself) and I made some mistakes, which basically ended up soft-bricking my device (unable to update gapps since I had merged the entire system folders instead of just copying system/app), and it would not boot to the home screen.
After looking for a while I had found the RUU for this phone, however, the .exe just did not work for me, it wouldn't detect my phone (maybe incorrect drivers, but I can't be sure of that as my phone was rooted using the same computer)...
So after some thinking and working stuff out, I came up with method (well, at least for this phone, it has been done for other phones before), so I present you...
HOW TO UNBRICK THE HTC T328W DESIRE V (HTC WIND FROM CHINA UNICOM
What you need
-The phone, obviously (try to have battery above 30%)
-***RELOCKED*** bootloader
-The RUU found here (download the .exe) (Thank you island3r!)
-Micro SD card
Ok!~~~
Let us begin...
1.) Run the RUU exe file, and when it's done preparing, go to start > run, and type in %temp%, you should see the temp folder pop up...
2.) In the temp folder, look for the file with the longest name (that was my qualitative observation, needs clarification~!), and scroll down and find rom.zip
3.) Rename rom.zip to PL11IMG.zip, and transfer it to the root of your micro sd card (with the adapter in your computer, as you can't with your phone...since it's bricked...)
4.) Take the micro-sd card out of your computer, slide it in your phone, and boot into HBOOT (volume down + power button).
5.) When you are at the hboot screen, press the down button once, you should see the phone scan the SD card, it will say in about 5 - 10 seconds "PL11IMG.zip found....checking.....loading", there is a vertical progress bar on the top right side of the screen so you can be sure that it's not frozen or something...
6.) After it is done checking, it should bring up a menu to update and say press vol+ for YES and vol- for new, we need to flash this update/restoration so press the the volume up button...
7.) It will do something for about a minute, and go BACK to boot loader, repeat step 5 and 6 (this happened to me, I really don't know if this will happen to others...someone please test this?)
8.) Now that you have said YES to update the second time, wait about 10 minutes (you can watch the progress bar too), and it will say "update completed, press power to reboot"
9.) Reboot, and your phone is good as new!!!!* ^______^
*I mean it when I say that, it is literally good as new; it will wipe everything, and you need to activate your phone again and set up and all that stuff
I NEED TESTERS AND CONFIRMERS....HELP ME OUT WITH THIS METHOD PLEASE
Hope you found this helpful! Post if you have any comments, concerns, or any thing that should be added on (this is my first guide hahaha )
I cannot execute as above as i never get to step #6.
----------------
My T328W came with OS version 1.35.
Recently it got an OTS update to 1.56.
This happened while i was in process to unlock boot-loader, root the phone, and begin installation of gaps.
Now the phone seems to be in "NEVER NEVER land". I cant do much with it. WIFI and Bluetooth are not working.
I can readily lock and unlock the boot-loader.
The security is on. S-ON.
I want to go back to 1.35 (factory shipped version) but cannot as different errors come up when trying ton install RUU. I do have the original version RUU it shipped with.
There seems to be much confusion as to how install this orignal RUU. S-ON or should it be OFF. How do i turn it OFF.
BASICALLY
I want to get the phone completely back to shipped version. So then i can begin the root, and gaps installation.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Helpful guide
it works. Thank you.
how do you install Google Play in your chinese Version (China Unicom) T328W, build 1.35.1402.1?
This method would not work for device which have HBOOT 1.14.0002 and S-ON (device which have received 1.56.1402 release OTA update). Mind one got this and when I flash the zip, the phone say "HBOOT is older" cannot update.
I see someone in androidforum post that there is a method to flash only system, data and recovery (what he call mini-RUU) but I dont know whether it work or not if I fash 1.35.xxx rom to my newer HBOOT device.
If someone have experience could help me confirm it, I am sorry that I am hersitated to test myself cause I dont have any backup rom for my device, I am scare if it would soft-brick my device (it's currently have and missing feature rom - missing notification bar, but at lease it still work and allow my to whatsapp with my wife). Please help.

Pull battery and put back in then hold volume down + power button and tell us what it says in the menu. S-on/off, hboot etc etc. Also read bortak's guide in Desire Q&A/ stickies. If you are on your computer/laptop it will be the first post in Desire Q&A.

How flashing DHD without volume button ?

Hello,
I would like to install a custom ICS ROM, but the volume button doesn't work. I do diagnose this issue, and it appears that it is a hardware issue, so only the replacement of the motherboard can fix it (but this operation is not planned... relating to money issue...).
So, I understand that I'll have to make a goldcard, then downgrade the firmware to 1.73, then Root + S-Off... but all these operations need to access to the bootloader, which requires the volume button...
is there another way to flash the ROM of my stock DHD, without accessing to the bootloader ?
My phone is NOT root. The phone is a SFR operator branded phone. I
installed android version is 2.3.5 build 3.12.405.1, with Sense 3.0 (official HTC ROM) a years ago. It was an official HTC ROM, so the root isn't needed, and I did perform the flash directly through my PC.
Thanks in advance.
Rgds.
I'm not 100% sure, so could be wrong here...
Turn the phone on and plug it into the pc. Connect as charge only, and enable USB debugging.
Use adb command in cmd to reboot into bootloader.
You'll have to do a bit of a search to find the command. Also, you'll need to install adb on your pc

I've had my Desire HD for 22 months now and unfortunately the volume button/rocker is starting to fail too. It might not be such a difficult hardware fix, adjustment or even possibly clean for some. It's a shame though, and it will weigh up in my decision making for my next phone. I still love the phone though.
You could try to fix it or keep it as is (as a backup to play around with). The worst that could happen (for now), you'll need adb to do a few things. Nothing major.

4ext recover touch
Makes ROM manager ( non touch ) look awful
If you don't have the volume rocker than just enable USB Debugging and the only difference is that once you need to access your Recovery or Bootloader you use one of these commands in CMD/Terminal:
adb reboot recovery
or
adb reboot bootloader
Obviously you need to have adb installed on you computer.
I don't know if this is still relevant to the original poster but I have found the soft keys work as the volume rocker in ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0. The HOME and MENU keys work as the volume up and down. The ARROW (Back) button is the return or go back button, and SEARCH works the same as the Power button for selecting. I to have the Inspire 4g version, but should still be the same for DHD.
Edit: Did not see the not rooted part of the OP. Well, I hope this helps someone else.

NO don´t flash your phone is the volume rocker is not working...you might get stuck and won't be easy to get back to a working state. Hacking should be done with a fully working phone.
