Having spent almost 8 hours trying to install 253 with root developed by NUT I got stacked with recovery issue. I'm not blaming NUT, not at all, he's contributed in great deal with his way how to make 253 rooted and highly recommend to those who doesn't have XZL 6506 try his way first!.
Now I want to share with you what I found.
Before I used 434 customized by HackitZ (personnaly I liked all his ROMS for XT and XZL), rooted with Superuser and when I used to receive a note to update to 253 OTA it didn't work, this is why I was looking for our experts how to root 253. and as said in the beginning after total frustration with proposed way I flashed back the generic 434 US, rooted it, BUT when rooting I chose SUPERSU, NOT SUPERUSER! After rebooting phone I got a message about system update OTA, I did it and it worked, first of all, the update has been installed and secondly! the root was there and you can check my screen shots (you see SuperSU and Titanium). LTE is working!
So I got 253 and root without any headache. I don't have any idea whether it works for all or other 650x. We are all here to explore. The only advice i can give to noobs DO BACKUP when you think to do anything with you phone!
XZL 6506, locked BL, 253 rooted
special notes: all process has been accomplished with sim card out. (I don't know how it is important, but it worked) and recovery was installed only after the phone successfully rebooted into 253..

I guess you got lucky, I flashed back to stock 434, rooted with SuperSU and downloaded the firmware via OTA. It downloads properly, the phone reboots and comes back to my 434 ROM and just says "Could Not Install" and to try again but I already tried twice now.
I'm sure once Nut works out the bugs out of the dual recovery, it will be easy to get root with stock 253.

I did it with two phones and it worked on both. once again: flashed US Generic 434, rooted with SuperSU, using Flashtool 09.10.2 beta6. and 253 OTA. I don't know if its important or not, but I did it with sim card out (you can see in the screen shots there is a red cross against sim card sign).

Hmm, Well I did the exact same steps but with a SIM card in the phone...
Ill give it another go!
AH crap, Im at work now and have no WiFi ... If I remove my SIM card I will lose my LTE as well ... I'll have to try when I get home after work.
BTW, after installing SuperSU, did you go to the options and "Install SuperSU into / system" or you left it installed in \Data\App?

I rooted 434 with flashtool and it gives you two options: superuser or supersu. I chose supersu and nothing else.

Im trying to help Nut providing him with the logs from my phone but when i tried your way earlier, I had flashed the phone with generic 434 so anything I was running got wiped, no more recovery. All I did was install SuperSU and did OTA. The only difference was that my phone had a SIM card.

that's right, after flashing a ROM with flashtool you wipe everything unless you made certain changes before flashing are done. this is why everyone is advised to do BACKUP before making any changes with ROM or system apks.
I tried to explain my process and my experience during the process. You are most welcome to share your experience and your success. I'm glad that you did it.
Oh, It didnt work for me yet. Ill try as soon as I get home. Im at work now, no WiFi, only LTE so i cannot try at the moment. I was just saying that the only difference between what you did and I did was that you removed your SIM card and I didnt. So ill from home in a few hours without a SIM card. Hope it works for me too!

Well, I got home, flashed back to stock 434 and rooted. No SIM card this time, but same problem, it downloads but at the beginning of the installation it reboots and tells me "Could not install". I tried via PC Companion which worked, it kept my apps but it got rid of my root.
Ah well, Ill do it Nut's way. He managed to fix the DualRecovery a few hours ago. :good:
I dont get it, why does Sony/Google keep trying to block us from getting root. If you know what root is and what it means and you decide you want to have it. It should be downloadable right from the market. If you damage your phone because of it, its your own fault. Same deal as unlocking the bootloader which voids your warranty. Should be the users choice....
Just my 2 cents...

you can, you need to flash the ftf with flash tool.
you may have issues with the baseband, so uncheck baseband in flash tool. before flashing.

I did full flash of 434_us and NOTHING was excluded. after rebooting I root it with flash_tool. (take supersu option). tune your wi-fi connection and check update. you should see 253 update available OTA. follow your phone commands. when you finish with upgrade, install CWM. the baseband I got with 434 and 253 provides LTE with my Canadian provider (should do the same for all North America). Good luck

Hello, I am new to these forums but have looked through (to the best of my ability) and have not found the solution to my problem. That problem is that I want to root my AT&T Sony Ericsson Xperia Play r800at (android v. 2.3.3).
I had it previously rooted using the Zergrush method (was still on 2.3.3) and it worked just fine, then about a month ago (perhaps half a month) my phone automatically updated itself via the software update function. Now I cannot get root back using the Zergrush method. I also tried the SuperOneclick method to which it hangs on step #7 and I am at a loss.
What information do you need about my phone to help in figuring out any possible solution?
Thank you for your assistance and I look forward to any replies.
Have you tried with DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit?
PD: If the phone updated after November 2011 it seems you can't use zergRush, try with Flashtool

Indeed I have, that was the Zergrush method I mentioned previously. Thanks for asking.
I'm new with this but I think that your only solution is unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom kernel & rom

If I were to use Flashtool, what kernel would I need and do I absolutely need to unlock the bootloader in order to flash said kernel? Also, is there way to relock the bootloader (with original files intact) just in case I need to return the phone to AT&T repairs/maintenance or anything?
Ok, I've searched a bit more, seems thath you DON'T need to unlock your bootloader, just need to flash a firmware build that can be exploited by zergRush method.
I've searched and I found this (I haven't tried it)
1. Download flashtools
2. Download the .270 build Xperia_Play_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.rar
3. Flash the older build
4. Use flashtools to root
And you should get root acces

Yep that will work. Once rooted you can update to the latest AT&T build which is .285 but you must do it OTA. If you update through your computer it will remove the root.

He was talking about the carrier branded rom from AT&T which is his cellular provider. OTA means over the air. Basically doing the whole update process through the phone.

Dude, it totally worked!! Not a single hiccup anywhere whatsoever!!! Thank you so much!!! :highfive:
Since you were talking about OTA updating and such: If I were to root and then update to the latest build OTA is it still possible to unroot using the flashtool or whatever was used to gain root? The reason I ask this is should AT&T ever need to look at my phone...
I think that the answer is yes, just update the phone with pc companion, also you can flash again .270 firmware and the phone should get unrooted

Awesome, and is there anything else I should be aware of? After all I am flashing things *wink wink*
As far i know, if you want to try any room, make sure that is compatible for locked bootloaders (you phone have a locked bootloader) and for you mobile phone type , follow the instructions carefuly and if you don't understand something, ask Oh, and don't try to flash a custom kernel (like DoomKernel) with a locked bootloader beacause you will brick your phone.
That's all I can tell you
if you downgrade will you lose your files?
thanks Mercado for the mirror sight for SOC 2.3.3

Weird but it worked for me.
Just download the 6.1.A.2.45 generic ftf file from whatever you want, then root the Stock system with Bin4ry's method. Install CWM if you want too.
When the OTA notification appear, just download and install as usually. And the root will be there.
I have no issues atm.
Working Root explorer, sd mounter and ill try some rooted apps to be sure.:laugh::laugh:
I Hope can work for you. :good:

Lt26i 6.1.A.2.55 original.

Confused by all of this...
I connected my phone last night, and it told me there was an update. I assumed it was 6.1.a.2.55 So after reading reports of OTA updates I checked for OTA updates on the phone, none available. So I figured I would try OTA RootKeeper and install the one that the desktop software offered.
As it turns out, it wasn't 6.1.a.2.55, it was 6.1.a.2.50, and I lost root by loading it. Fortunately Bin4ry's method still worked, so I could re-root.
Concerned about loading any 6.1.a.2.55, as surely it will load the same way as 6.1.a.2.50, and this wipe the system partition and lose root.
So really not sure how people managed to keep root and 6.1.a.2.55...
This post just adds to the confusion, as it's talking about FTF:
"Just download the 6.1.A.2.45 generic ftf file from whatever you want"
and also OTA updates..
"When the OTA notification appear, just download and install as usually"
Which one was it???? Surely the FTF is one thing and the OTA is something totally different....
Even more confused that I originally was....

1. This method is known for quite long
2. .55 isn't available for everyone, yet
3. Even worse is, the OTA won't be available to some/most of the regions.
4. Turns out to be a useless thread.
You want root your .55 firmware? Look at my signature.
This method is for those who want to have the latest version .55 clean. First go back to version .45 can be updated to .55. here the simplest version we get is for the Singapore market. Here
Root version. 45 with Bin4ry method and then update OTA .The end you will have what you want a original and clean.
Have fun!

I found the method for root 6.1.A.2.55, but you must have unlocked bootloader. Flash kernel ex. Advanced Stock Kenel. I tested on Advanced Stock Kernel build 15. Titanum Backup, Root Explorer and Superuser app working fine . Sorry for my bad english.
Ps. If it does not work you must flash 6.1.A.2.50 (If you have it, you can skip this step)> root (from flashtool)> flash 6.1.A.2.55 (flash without wipe data and wipe cache)>flash kernel.

Then you've to Downgrade on .350 or .434, root with on of the existing Metohds and then Update OTA to .253.
Eventually you have to use OTA Rootkeeper, but some of the Guys reported they don't have to.

I am trying to install the OTA update .244. It downloads and attempts to install but I always get a "could not install update" message. I have the C6506 model of the xPeria ZL. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the install to fail? Thanks in advance. :crying:

I used to receive that same message when trying to install the OTA for can't remember which build. Anyway my phone was rooted with a locked bootloader but I had made some changes to the System\Apps with a few tweaks which I figured that was why mine was failing to update via OTA.
Just make a backup of your phone and flash the firmware with Flashtool, it takes 3 minutes and you can re-root the phone easily after.
It takes about 10 min total....

Hello,
I have a G2 Running Stock LS980ZVA Kernel Version 3.4.0. Now I rooted the stock ROM and now got a notification to update the ROM to ZVC.
Now my dilemma is do I "Restart and Install" this update or not. Will this brick my phone?
I have TWRP running as the custom recovery. What should I be doing? I tried to search for a similar thread but couldn't find one.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you!
You will brick. Either hold your finger on the notification and then click app data. Click on the show notification. No check mark. Notification will go away.
Regular reboot will not install the update.
If you unroot and put regular recovery back. Then you could.

okay, i did some research and found that it is safe to install OTAs but if youre rooted youll lose the root and unlock will still stay.
best imo, is you upgrade to 4.4.2 and root again with custom recovery and install a nice ROM.
