Anyone know of a great "Guide to the Note 2", NOT just a guide to rooting, but the whole shebang?
I'm no noob, with just about 2 years on my (launch day) HTC EVO 4G (OG4G), including some modding and dev-ing.
I was a very proud MYN-ion...using mostly Myn's Warm or Synergy, and getting friendly with the entire community while developing skills I was proud of. BUT, it's been a while since I really did any serious stuff and I finally got a new Galaxy Note II.
I already rooted, and put TWRP 2501 on it, and have tricked out my stock ROM a bit, but when I went to install DTA2SD I discovered this phablet has a completely different file structure. So now I'm feeling a bit lost and want to know EVERYTHING about this phone so I can get up to speed as on the OG4G.
So, I repeat, Anyone know of a great "Guide to the Note 2", NOT just a guide to rooting, but the whole shebang?
Thanks for your help.

don't know of a guide, but sounds like you want to look into dev subforum, which is in the international variant.
yes, how storage is setup on the GN2 is different. Its the same as the S3, and I assume S4. I believe it has to do with profiles in Android. I believe there may be script to use to get App2Sd to work. Otherwise, you need to use something like FolderMount or DirectoryBind. I know there is another script where you can tell the phone the internal storage is the SD card and the extermnal memory is internal storage.

Thanks very much, but I'm still looking for a good, comprehensive Guide to the entire phone.
There are SO MANY things about this phone that are not in the manual, or anything I can find from traditional sources online... The manual hardly even touches on the S-Pen, and from what I've read it's capabilities are impressive.
So far, after rooting and putting on TWRP 2501, I've been able to build a very usable phone simply building on the stock ROM. Before I try any Custom ROMs, I REALLY want to know ALL the phone's abilities...
Check this out.

Awesome, Wiley, thanks.... I usually don't like videos as they're dependent on the "narrator's" personality/talents, but these are prolific so I'll have to check them out.
I would still like a "User's Guide" or a "Tips and Tricks" manual assembled by (hopefully) XDA Members. On the EVO 4G, we had such an immense, awesome community of "Myn-ions" (revolving around the Developer MYN who wrote the 2 best ROMs - Warm and Synergy) there were a few of those, in addition to the MOST resourceful community one could hope for. There was never a single thing you couldn't learn from someone and the exchange of ideas and information was a constant thing.
I learned how to theme, develop ROMs, tweak, etc from them all while usually laughing my ass off...
I'm hoping, since the Note 2 is so popular, I'll find that "community spirit" in this group!
it'll be popular, but I think the S3 or S4 series will be more. It's cheaper. Luckily, there are quite a few similarities, so you can definitely learn a few new ideas
As a side note, I think you probably have a solid ground work. Sounds to me you need to learn more about Touchwiz if you're going to build from the stock rom. I don't think Samsung has released anything much on the Spen to be able port more of it's functions into an AOSP. There is the SDK for it, but I assume it's Touchwiz based. It's possible the feature beyond the the basic touch commands could be built into the framework.

Congrats on your new toy! After 6 months with mine I haven't seen anything else that interests me.
I find calling Sammy or googling your questions get the quickest results.

Hello everyone! I'm pretty new with android phones. Until about 4 months ago, I still had a Motorola Razor. I went and bought the LG Optimus M (by Metro PCS) in December, fell in love with androids, and upgraded to the Evo 4G. I love this phone so much!!!
I'm decent with electronics, but I won't mess with my phone too much because it's unknown territory. I rooted my Optimus only to delete bloatware. I won't root my Evo only because I really don't need to (not much bloatware , plus, there's more internal space on this phone). I already can tether and I like Sense, so I personally don't see the need for it (for me, not saying you shouldn't root; again, I'm new to this stuff).
Landing the plane:
What are some fun and interesting things I can do with this phone? What are some cool apps?
BTW, a little off topic, I have the app TV Shows HD. Why did that get taken off of the market?
Thanks guys for dealing with this newbie!
Well unless you root your phone there really isn't much else you can do with it besides download apps and play games. The best apps require root though, so even that has its limitations. The Evo is quite hard to brick, so it would be worth it to root. You can have Sense and have it be even faster with Mikfroyo or some of the other custom roms out there.

Hmm, okay. Well, can you do me a favor? Can you please (if and when you have time) to send me a link to wherever it is I have to go to root my phone along with information about the root, how to root and all of that fun stuff?
Again, I don't know much. I love this phone and where I live I have 4G nearly everywhere I go. I would love to make this phone even cooler!
Here is a link to a sticky in the development section which has links to pretty much everything you need to root your phone. Just read up on it and try to get as much information as possible. After you root it you can load custom roms, kernels and themes to your phone as well as back it up, restore it from a backup and many more goodies. I suggest reading all over this Evo forum here at XDA about rooting. Everything you need to know and everything you need to do it are right here. Read about all the different Roms and what they have and don't have and decide which will be best for you. Get started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
If 4G is important to you make sure that 4G is working in the Rom before flashing. It is on AOSP Roms now like CM7. You can stick with stock Sprint and still be rooted too if you really like it. Many devs have taken stock Sprint Rom and modified it, making it faster with less bloat and just plain better. My favorite Sense Rom was Mikfroyo, but I am a dedicated CM7 user now.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!

there is a long ass thread of recommended apps...
I agree man. If you aren't new to rooting, then definitely give it a go on the EVO. Just do your homework and research well before you start, you'll be fine.
The evo has excellent dev support, there are some really fantastic roms to choose from, beauty of rooting ... you're choice never has to be final. There are also some excellent people making excellent themes.. definitely fun to change it up every once in a while.
You can also improve performance, speed, battery life and add new features with root. You will not be disappointed.
Just be sure to at least hit the Thanks button if you use someones work, it's important for these guys to know they're appreciated.
I just rooted for the first time very recently (~2 days) and I found the following posts extremely helpful and, in combination, to provide a fully comprehensive guide on how to root, what to expect, how to avoid doing things wrong, how to backup, how to restore, how to flash ROMs and kernels and other add-ons, et cetera:

Thanks guys! I can't believe their is a forum filed with really cool and helpful people! Thank you all!

Idk if this is still relevant but there WERE several hw versions that required different rooting methods, be careful with that. Maybe they all have a unified rooting method now, I don't pay any attention to that stuff now that I have a custom recovery.

Well, it's officially been two months since I got my G2. What else is there left for me to do?
- I've already got SIM Unlock, superCID, and radio S-OFF.
- I've already got CM7 Nightly 92 w/ Pershoot's latest Gingerbread kernel.
- I've already got backups of Virtuous, Virtuous G-Lite, and CM7.
- I've already installed Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and set up lxde.
- I've already overclocked and underclocked my CPU.
What else is there left for me to do? Can I dual-boot between different mobile operating system platforms (i.e. Symbian^3/Maemo 5, Windows Mobile, HP webOS/Palm OS, etc.)? Can I do ANYTHING else other than flash a ROM/Kernel and overclock? Or is this it?
You have done pretty much everything there is to. The next step is start cooking up your own stuff. I'm guessing you all ready have adb working. You can download apk manager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701 and start doing some themeing of your own or port some themes for your favourite roms.
And if your feeling really adventurous have a go at building your own roms, there is a really easy to use rom kitchen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
If your computer is up to it you could try building cm from source have a look at the cm wiki http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Building_from_source
I don't think there is anyway to use any of the other OS's you metioned. But some one is working on a project to dual boot android roms, the concept is awesome it would be cool to dual boot between sense and CM, have a look here for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847423 this is a WIP though

You gotta be kidding me. So you're telling me there's no way I can get Maemo/Symbian^3/webOS on my phone as a dual-boot? Is there at least a ROM of Touchwiz or even MOTOBLUR? I'm sick and tired of HTC Sense.
On the xda app so can't see your Sig. Siulmagic did do a droid x port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051229 so you can give motoblur a try.
The HD2 is the xda king everything seems to work on it. Our lowly G2/DZ are not in the same leauge.
It may be possible to port some of the OS's you mentioned but i dont believe anyone is curently work on them. But i would love to be proved wrong.
How is your custom rom coming? If you need anyone to test I'm all ways happy to help. I have a really quiet job which provides me with a lot of spare time and a decent internet connection.

Windows Phone 7 is a closed platform, so its pretty close to impossible to port it to other platforms, in my understanding. I believe the only reason HD2 can run it, is because MS actually developed a WP7 version for HD2. As far as the old Windows Mobile versions, its obsolete and a pile, and the only reason to run it, is if you need to run some legacy software. Similarly, Symbian is all but dead at this point, as Nokia moves to WP7.

Not too familiar with the Blackstone, but probably just a matter of developer interest. The Blackstone seems to have pretty similar specs to my old Touch Pro 2 (in terms of CPU and memory), and the TP2 does run Android. Although the TP2 Android project was pretty slow and laggy when I last played with it in December or so (but it looks like a lot more work has been done on the project).

So not even another Linux-based operating system like Symbian^3, Maemo, or webOS can be installed on my G2?
Its a phone, and its designed to be used with its native OS. Not for loading other OSes willy-nilly, for your enjoyment.
Even if you could load other OSes onto it, so what? Would that radically change your smartphone experience, and what you do with you phone day to day? Not really.

Well for starters you could settle down and control your compulsiveness to jack with your phone. Android is probably the best OS out there, no reason to port to an inferior one. You are the first I have heard that has wanted a port to all these other variances. Most others are happy with the Android OS and like the custom ROMs and ways we can customize our devices already.
My advice to you... find a well paying job, squander all your money with buying yourself a brand new phone every month or two without contract. Maybe port all this other crap yourself. You seem to complain a lot, so intead of doing that, make your own ports and ROMs. That oughta make you happy
you could download eclips and the android sdk start making your own apps
you could try and port touchWiz or motoBlur to your phone your self
i beleave there is a port for MeeGo for our phone but is is far to slow to do any thing on
EDIT: and by the way your coming over a a bit of a **** when people are trying to help you

I don't really know what you are expecting, its a phone. how much more could you want it do to? compare it a iPhone, then you would be limited. If your desperate for a Touchwiz or Motoblur Rom, port it your self. The reason why these ROM's haven't been done is because there not rated very highly particularly Motoblur.
You have a great phone with good dev support. appreciate it .

dude, what else do you want to do? I guess that's a good question to ask. There are literary tons of stuff to do with your phone. There are numerous ports with this phone you can try. You wanna play dual core games like samuarai vengeance 2 eventhough you don't have dual core? Go right ahead with chainfire3d. You can theme your phone how ever you want with icons, colors, ANYTHING. What other operating system allows you to do this? How would you be better off with ANY other OS? You can easily flash themes and such to make it looks like touchwiz, or motoblur. you can even make it look like honeycomb for goodness sake. Fool around with the UOT kitchen and cook up some fancy looking themes are icons.
I suggest you do a little searching around on xda, OTHER than the G2 thread because there are tons of stuff that apply to alot of phones that aren't just found in that device's forum. Its dumb for you to judge the one OS that actually ALLOWS you to do whatever you want to it.
The end.

You seem fixated on just loaded different OSes, and just don't want to accept the answers people are giving you. People have already gave tons of suggestions. But you aren't interested in listening.
MotoBlur and TouchWiz are trash, anyway. Not much more than cosmetic changes to the launcher, and other general theming. You can easily mess around with those things yourself, as several others have already suggested.

Okay, I just recently got the S3 after having an HTC hero for years that was unceremoniously killed by mother nature on a ride home that took me through a torrential downpour on a motorcycle.
My little hero was rooted and running cyanogenmod 7.2 however i haven't messed with modifying any phone or such since that one or more advanced than that.
I know there are tons of threads with how Tos on rooting the s3 and such. But, I have noticed in a few of them they mention "tripping a flash counter". Does the method shown by qbking trip it or not, and what is the significance of this?
Something else I'm noticing being mentioned in various threads are Kernels. To be honest I don't know what they are and haven't found a thread explaining them. So what do they do what is their significance? etc etc
Thanks in advance for any help and I'm sorry if these have been answered before somewhere I'm not seeing. But I think it's better to ask and get answers from the experts and be sure before moving forward with modifying my brand new phone. Especially since the guys at my local sprint store root and modify their phones so they know what to look for in case something were to happen.
Before I answer your questions, I just wanted to thank you for reading up a lot prior to asking and trying to find the answer on your own. Also, your questions were clear and concise, which is becoming more rare on this site (and others).
Ok, as far as the trip counter goes, it shouldn't matter if you trip it. Samsung is a lot more developer-friendly than HTC is, so there's no locked boot loader (on the s3) and there's no real big deal with tripping the counter. You can use triangle away to remove the trip, but it shouldn't matter. I believe qbking's method well trip it.
Kernals are a bit more difficult to explain, but if you're familiar with drivers for Windows, I think the concept is similar. The android os is not designed to communicate with every piece of hardware out there. The kernals are there to act as the translator between the "generic" language of android and the specific language of the specific hardware that's used in the phone. So when android asks for the GPS, all it had to do is call upon the GPS. The kernel is the one that translates that and gives directions to the specific piece of hardware (in this case, the GPS). The main advantage of custom kernals is that they can also relate the processor speed, which can either boost performance or save battery life, depending on your preferences and settings.
There is a thread in general that talks a lot about the ktoonsez Kendall and the various settings that people have used. I've found it a good primer on kernals and how the different governors work.
After all that, have fun flashing!

Thanks for the help and the info. As far as the kernel thing goes i must admit i feel stupid now, esp being a computer science major, granted I'm just beginning toward my degree however for some reason i just didn't put two and two together. My excuse is that it was late at night/early in the morning heh , that being said please excuse me while i go bang my head against a wall to see if i can jump start my brain.
I guess now the only thing left to do is watch the video again/download the files and root the sucker and go from there.
Thanks again for the info and guess i need to read the FAQ a bit more rather than skimming through

Howdy folks. I'm not much of a developer, so I need a bit of help trying to make my concept a reality. Obviously if I'm successful, I'll give credit where credit is due. That being said, I'm looking for a way to hard-brick Android devices from either within the OS itself, or from a custom recovery, preferably TWRP. A kind of "self-destruct", if you will. And it has to be doable, or at least triggerable, from Android itself, so I can set it up to be activated remotely, via Tasker or what have you, nothing that I would need to connect the phone to a computer to use. So I guess what I need is either a script, or a recovery flash zip. I'm hoping for a universal solution, so it could be used for any Android device, not just mine. But if that's not available, my current devices are a T-Mobile S3 (obviously), HTC One, Motorola Xoom LTE (aka Wingray), and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (P600), and I'd like to have it working with any and/or all of my devices, at least. So, is there any way I can achieve this?
On a public forum accessible to unregistered users, such a discussion can and will open a can of worms. Yes indeed there are ways to do this. However I am sure ways of wanton destruction will violate XDA rules. Who knows, some unsavory folks came across this and sent it as a bomb to all ? You see where I am going ?
Having said that, I think your genuine intent is to make your device unusable in case of theft. Towards this, there really are several nice apps and services. Starting with Google's own Device manager to Where's my droid and quiet a few others. Please explore what they can do.
You're right about my intentions, but I don't just want to wipe my device if it's stolen, which is all those apps can do. I want to render it completely unusable, so whoever has taken it can't do anything with it. So what you're telling me is, if I DO come up with a way to do so, it's probably not a good idea to share it here?
Edit:

I'm not looking for something to send to my phone. I'm looking for something that would take an extensive set-up procedure. Something like a script, started by Tasker, in response to a VERY specific text message. Or maybe instead of a script, a zip being flashed, although I haven't quite figured out how to do that with Tasker yet. You're probably right about the XDA rules though, I didn't think about that.

Device encryption and Screen lock are supposed to serve precisely that exact purpose you are describing. Please explore. Do understand some of the other apps in the category of Lookout do offer a lot more features and functions. Please explore one or two of them.
Just wondering if someone can point me to any tutorials for LG noobs. I've come from a lifetime of Samsung devices (odin) etc and am feeling a little shaky on the whole adb/command line front.
Looking for some of the common basics like safeguarding by loading system images on the root of your internal storage, kdz files and such. Some all encompassing information that I might need to know as I feel like I'm completely learning the whole root/rom game again.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone knows of something like this that they could point me to.

I'm just trying to take baby steps at this point. Maybe when I feel like I've read enough, watched enough video tutorials and let it all sink in I'll actually bite the bullet and try to root.
I imagine it'll be anticlimactic and I'll wonder what took me so long once it's done. Nice thing about the samsung line was that I don't think it was possible to mess them up.
I was in your same situation like 2 months ago (coming from a s3). I'm not saying that now i know everything about lg world but ima tell you what i did the first 2 weeks after i got the phone. Reading xda topics. Reading twice if necessary (yes it was). Google everything i didn't know such as: what's a kdz? What's adb? Lg flash tool, lg_root? And so on. I didn't find a site with complete guides and dictionary for specific terms (if someone have any please provide it), all you need to do is searching. I've also looked at g3 forum.
