[Q] A zip that deletes the manual and quick start from NST? - Nook Touch Android Development

Hello there,
I have a simple question, I'm sure most of you developers know how to help us all.
I have a NST not rooted (I don't really need for mods and stuff) but I would like to get rid of the manual and the quick start guide that really annoys me.
Is it possibile to create a zip (maybe an img would be even better) that starts ClockworkmodRecovery and then that includes a flashable zip that deletes the 2 epubs?
So that everyone can delete them once and for all.
Let me know if I can help you.

Perhaps it would be better to download and install a root explorer (such as ES File Explorer) and use it to browse and delete these epub files.

well, that includes rooting, installing a launcher, installing a program...
i thought that a zip that does it without rooting and without anything permanent on the device would be better.

I make what you asked for, find it enclosed. It is a zip update for CWM. I guess you know how to proceed but I've left instructions below for those who face this issue for first time:
1. Make a backup of your NST with noogie following this instructions.
2. Download the file enclosed within this post.
3. Burn 2gb_clockwork-rc2.img file to be written on a SD-Card using Win32DiskImager or dd on linux.
4. Open the SD-Card (where you burn 2gb_clockwork-rc2.img) and copy the DeletingEpubGuides.zip on the SD-Card.
5. Power down and insert the SD-Card on the NST.
6. Press the power button for 3 seconds, so that the device boots (you don't have to hold the power button after the 3 seconds)
7. As soon as the display changes to the "CWM logo" screen, push and hold the lower left and the lower right button until the screen changes again. Wait until you see the recovery. Hence, you'll be already booted into Clockworkmod recovery (Button layout: Both Buttons on the left: BACK / Upper button on the right: UP / Lower button on the right: DOWN / n button: SELECT / Power button: TOGGLE DISPLAY).
8. Install through CWM recovery the DeletingEpubGuides.zip update placed on the SD-Card. When you'll read "Done" press power button during 10 second and eject the SD-card.
9. Press power button to turn on the nook to let the devices open commonly.
I've just tested it over my NST v1.1.2 and works without problem.
Best.

I'm running 1.2.1, and I found them at /system/assets/userguides/standard/ . (There's also a /glowlight/ folder in the /userguides/ directory, FWIW.)
EDIT: However, deleting them there doesn't seem to remove them from the library. And I can't find the /system/media/books folder. Hmmm...
EDIT AGAIN: Also found them in /data/cloud_assets/books/userguides . Deleting, rebooting, and will report back here if that did it.
LAST EDIT I SWEAR: SUCCESS! Deleting them from all the locations listed above made them vanish from the library.

Newbie guide: HTC Desire: Stock FroYo to Gingerburst 2.1; simply (well 30 steps anywa

Hello all,
To make the actual guide more accessible I have moved my original ramblings that previously preceeded the actual guide to the bottom
Section 1reperation:Download and unzip all the files needed
Step 1: Get yourself ready, download all the items you need (save them all in an easy to reach directory on your pc):
Revolution to root and s-off your phone: http://revolutionary.io/ credit to Eric Smaxwill • Koush Dutta • Adam Glasgall • Sen Verbrugge • Kenny Millington • Matthew Fogle • Joshua Wise • Michael Sullivan • Matt Mastracci • Ryan Pearl
Droidzone for the gingerburst rom: http://gingerburst.droidzone.in/ credit to Sibere for the Data2SD development •o$$!ram for the source build. •Robocik, Neophytex360, Coolexe for doing pioneer porting work •snq- for the kernel and Kernel mods, ext4 support, Wake-on-trackpad etc! •dsixda for the Android Kitchen •C0urier for hosting my site and for mirrors (Thanks a lot!) •deXter (and AdamG & _thalamus), Roach2010 for suggestions to improve the Data2SD code
http://revolutionary.io/revolutionary-0.3pre7.zip - windows version, unzip/extract all the files; although this is a direct link you really need to download this by going to http://revolutionary.io/ and clicking the link from there (you must have java enabled) as that causes the java frame to appear i the webpage which you use to get the key (used later)
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe - windows drivers
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip - root superuser access; don’t unzip
http://hotfile.com/dl/125113123/dfb5a65/GingerBurst_1.0.0.3.zip.html - Gingerburst ROM; don’t unzip
http://gingerburst.droidzone.in/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=1 – Data2SD installer; don’t unzip
http://gingerburst.droidzone.in/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=2 – Data2SD reinstaller; don’t unzip
When you are done you should have a list of files as the below:
Data2SDInstallerNXE2.zip
Data2SDReInstallerNXE2.zip
GingerBurst_1.0.0.3.zip
HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
revolutionary-0.3pre7.zip
su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
and a folder with the extracted items:
revolutionary-0.3pre7\AdbWinApi.dll
revolutionary-0.3pre7\libcurl-4.dll
revolutionary-0.3pre7\libjson-0.dll
revolutionary-0.3pre7\mgwz.dll
revolutionary-0.3pre7\msvcr71.dll
revolutionary-0.3pre7\revolutionary.exe
On your PC, using windows explorer navigated to the directory where the files are saved:
Step 2: Double click (run) the HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe file to install the drivers
Section 2:Root & Super-user:Use revolutionary to flash a new HBOOT, S-OFF your phone and install ClockWorkMOD recovery, then use ClockWorkMod to give Super-user
Step 3: Double click the revolutionary-0.3pre7 directory to enter it and
Step 4: Double click (run) the revolutionary.exe file
It will open a command window and get to a point where it is waiting.
Step 5: Either:
With your phone powered on. Go to Settings->Applications->Development and turn USB debugging on then Connect the USB cable between the phone and PC.
or
Power off the phone. Leave it for 20 seconds to be certain it is off. Press and Hold the Volume down button and while holding it press the power on button. Keep holding the volume button and very quickly the phone will enter Bootloader mode. Connect the USB cable between phone and PC.
Step 6: At this point the revolution command window will recognise the phone is attached and ask for the beta key. Select and copy it from the website you left open when downloading item 1) and then right click on the top strip of the command window where it has the revolution name, choose the option menu item Edit and paste – this ensures you get the beta key entered correctly (on my first go I tried to type it and mixed up l and I, and o and 0). Agree with what the revolution program asks and it will tell you if it was successful.
Step 7: Power off the phone. Leave it for 20 seconds to be certain it is off. Press and Hold the Volume down button and while holding it press the power on button. Keep holding the volume button and very quickly the phone will enter Bootloader mode. Use the volume down button to scroll one menu item down to Recovery and the power button to select that item. The screen will go white with the HTC logo and then after a short time will enter the ClockWorkMod recovery menu.
Step 8: Scroll down to and select the menu item “mounts and storage” and then scroll to the bottom item and select it (“mount USB storage”)
Step 9: If it is not plugged in, plug in your USB cable between the phone and PC and the PC should recognise the phone is SD card reader mode. If a windows explorer window does not open (or windows offer you a choice to browse the folder) then press the windows key+E at the same time to open a windows explorer window and navigate to the “Removable Disk” that is your SD card in the phone.
Step 10: Copy su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip from the PC to the SD card.
Step 11: Disconnect the USB cable and then on the phone select “unmount” and press the back button on the phone. Scroll down and select the menu item “install zip from SD card”. Scroll until you find su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and select it. Once complete reboot.
For those who have apps, contacts, phone logs, sms messages etc. that they want to back-up, they should allow the phone to boot into normal mode. Download the various backup programs from the market – and as the phone is now rooted you can use all the apps that are mentioned at the bottom of the post.
Section 3:New ROM preperation:Back-up, partition SD card and copy ROM files to SD card
Step 12: Power off the phone.
Step 13: Scroll down and select “backup and restore” and then select “backup”. Clockworkmod will make a backup on the SDcard in the ClockWorkMod directory and show you progress as it does this. This ensures you can always return to this state at a later date if you wish.
Step 14: Once the back-up is complete, press the phones back button and then scroll down to and select the menu item “mounts and storage” and then scroll to the bottom item and select it (“mount USB storage”)
Step 15: If it is not plugged in, plug in your USB cable between the phone and PC and the PC should recognise the phone is SD card reader mode. If a windows explorer window does not open (or windows offer you a choice to browse the folder) then press the windows key+E at the same time to open a windows explorer window and navigate to the “Removable Disk” that is your SD card in the phone.
Step 16: Copy the entire contents of your SD card to a folder on the PC.
Step 17: Copy the following files downloaded previously into the folder on the PC where you have copied your SD card contents. They should be in the base folder. Files 4, 5 and 6: Data2SDInstallerNXE2.zip, Data2SDReInstallerNXE2.zip and GingerBurst_1.0.0.3.zip
Step 18: Disconnect the USB cable and then on the phone select “unmount” and press the back button on the phone. Scroll down and select the menu item “advanced”.
Step 19: Scroll down and select “partition SD card”. (Note this will wipe out your SD card contents – hence why we copied it to the PC).
Step 20: Choose a size for the ext partition that is 2048MB or less, but at least 500MB.
Step 21: Select 0M for the size of swap partition. NB: It is vital that this be 0 or Data2SD won’t work!
ClockworkMod will partition the SD card and inform you when it is done.
At this point I had a huge issue getting my PC to recognise the SD card through ClockWorkMod and had to reboot the phone, reboot the PC, uninstall the drivers on the PC ( by running HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe ) and reinstall them (by running HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe ) and only then would the PC see the SD card when ClockWorkMod is mounting it. I hope others don’t have this issue, but this is why I hav recommended keeping the USB cable disconnected and rebooting the phone at this point.
Step 22: Power off the phone.
Step 23: Scroll down and select the menu item “mounts and storage” and then scroll to the bottom item and select it (“mount USB storage”)
Step 24: If it is not plugged in, plug in your USB cable between the phone and PC and the PC should recognise the phone is SD card reader mode. If a windows explorer window does not open (or windows offer you a choice to browse the folder) then press the windows key+E at the same time to open a windows explorer window and navigate to the “Removable Disk” that is your SD card in the phone.
Step 25: Copy the contents of the folder for the SD card that you made on the PC – so the entire contents that were on the SD card are now back on it + the downloaded files which you copied into the base directory. From windows explorer you should see on the removable disk the downloaded Files 4, 5 and 6: Data2SDInstallerNXE2.zip, Data2SDReInstallerNXE2.zip and GingerBurst_1.0.0.3.zip
Section 4: Flash Gingerburst ROM:Flash GingerBurst_1.0.0.3.zip, reboot into phone mode, (don't install anything or sync)
Step 26: Scroll down and select the menu item “install zip from sdcard” and scroll to and select GingerBurst_1.0.0.3.zip from the list.
Step 27: ClockWorkMod will install the Gingerburst ROM. Once complete, press the back button on the phone and then select “reboot system now”. This will bring up the white screen with the HTC logo. It will take some time on this screen (if it is sitting for longer than 30 minutes there is an issue) and then it should begin loading up the new gingerbread install – though remember at this point the memory of the HTC desire has not been expanded onto the SDcard partition that was created, so choose your carrier e.g. Vodafone UK contract, skip the keyboard introduction and the google and other sync sections, until it begins to load the home screen. Wait while it does this – you may see some low memory warnings.
Step 28: Once it seems basically finished with this hold the power button of the phone in until the power-off menu appears. The new gingerbread power off menu has some more options – choose “Restart” and it will then bring up a sub-menu. Choose “Recovery”. This will boot directly into ClockWorkMod recovery.
Section 5: Flash Data2SD:Flash Data2SDInstallerNXE2.zip , reboot into phone mode, Enjoy!
Step 29: Select “install from zip” and scroll to the file Data2SDInstallerNXE2.zip and select it. ClockWorkMod will now install the Data2SD mod which will format the ext partition you created earlier to an ext4 type. It will show you progress.
Step 30: Once complete, select “Reboot to system”
The white screen with the HTC logo will appear and for a brief moment the nearly invisible LED next to the silver htc at the top of your phone will flash blue – this is a good sign. The white screen with HTC logo will remain for a while, although expect it to flash of and back on or go a little darker every couple of minutes. (It should not stay this way for longer than 30 minutes – if it does there is a problem.)
Eventually the phone should boot up into phone mode, the memory warning should be gone and you are now the proud owner of a Gingerbread HTC desire with sense 2.1 and the phone memory extended onto the partition on the SD card.
Go wild, install apps to the phone, synchronise your gmail, calendar, contacts, facebook and everythingelse you can think of. The phone should be quick and responsive and there should be no memory warnings. Say thank you on the xda developer website to the the revolution team and the droidzone guys.
Let me know if we need corrections to this guide, or if you think it should have screenshots etc. to accompany it. (I have done it from memory, checking where feasible without actually repartitioning my SD card again etc., but since I did it all only last night it still be pretty much correct). I have done this using my only HTC Desire and a Windows 7 64bit pro Lenovo laptop.
Although it’s long I hope it’s not daunting anymore.
PS: Useful Backup programs (search for them in the market) – many require root access:
Titanium Backup (Titanium Track)
MyBackup Root (included in the Gingerburst ROM)
APN backup and restore (Ritesh Sahu)
Call Logs backup and restore (Ritesh Sahu)
SMS Backup and Restore (Ritesh Sahu)
ROM manager (ClockWorkMod)(very useful tool for those using custom ROMS, includes some functions for accessing and using ClockWorkMods ROM backup functions)
And of course ClockWorkMod itself – though this is installed by the process above and not through the market.
PPS: Below is my original ramblings that preveiously preceeded the steps. Moved here to make the actual guide a little more accessible.
Firstly a huge thank-you and humble appreciation to the incredible devs that created the hacks and cooked up the ROMS used in this tutorial. It precisely because they are so amazingly genius that perhaps they don’t realise just how daunting this all looks to a newbie. I have tried to credit everyone that deserves it but am bound to have missed someone who created some part of this or hosted some files etc., if you deserve credit bask in the warm glow of knowing you are a great person and then politely let me know and I’ll edit the post)
Personally I am not your average computer user and I have over a number of years used the tools from this and other forums to hack and mod various phones beginning with the original xda on which this site is named. I’ve had my desire for nearly a year, but partly because it’s such a good phone, partly because it’s my work phone (though that never stopped me before and partly because this time around it just seemed so complex with so many choices and options and methods (and worryingly chances to go wrong) I have not rooted it until now. The reason I took the plunge was the simple issue that I had already basically removed all non-daily-use apps and even downgraded the Adobe-flash support and other updated apps and was still running out of space!
That said, it took me about 10 attempts, during which on a number of occasions I was left with the white screen and HTC logo and nothing else Some of those were of course my own fault – I didn’t follow the instructions exactly :-| , some because I just hadn’t understood the instructions, or didn’t realise what was actually meant and some because I couldn’t get me hardware to work. (booting to the ISO image of Gparted totally refused to see the SD card in the phone )
This guide should hopefully bring all resources together in 1 place and make it absolutely clear how to do it the simplest way and with the least steps and using nothing other than the phone itself (where possible) and your pc linked to the phone via USB where necessary. I hope it’s OK to link directly to the downloads o download pages for the files – I have mentioned the websites they come from, but I’m sure the MODs will correct me if this is not permited.
To start with I assume you are on a brand new phone with nothing installed except the vanilla Froyo supplied with the phone. There are some very clever tools to back up your various bits of important info if you aren’t in this state and I would recommend you use them. I will try to show when and where they would be useful, but I am not aiming to show how to take a phone that been in use for a year and convert it to Gingerbread with Sense 2.1 and still have everything set up as was.
That is the longest post I have ever seen!!!...
Good job

only some sorting and opmaak
I have to agree - it`s a big long post - it might be a good idea to put a few linebreaks in between each point, to space it out and make it easier to read
a second suggestion might be to put some sub-headers in..
e.g. -A download files, B root, C partition, D Install
Good points.
I'll have a go at tidying it up and creating logical sections tomorrow when I've got access to my PC.

Totally agree. The content of the thread might be good (I am sure it is), but this advantage gets lost by its horrible formatting which makes it nearly unable to read.
Another suggestion, short the first part (before step one) to the really important points. On this way its focal point gets concentrated to the steps 1-30, which is what you want, I guess.
At last, I may advise you to read some sticky guides here to get a good impression how to format texts.
Nevertheless, you did good work!!

I have edited the original post:
1) Moved the original intro words to the bottom - the focus is as you said the guide
2) Re-formatted the text to make it more readable
Does that seem better?
Hello all,
This is a much shorter, less wordy version of the guide without all the detailed explanations, just the steps

PS: Useful Backup programs (search for them in the market) – many require root access:
Titanium Backup (Titanium Track)
MyBackup Root (included in the Gingerburst ROM)
APN backup and restore (Ritesh Sahu)
Call Logs backup and restore (Ritesh Sahu)
SMS Backup and Restore (Ritesh Sahu)
ROM manager (ClockWorkMod)(very useful tool for those using custom ROMS, includes some functions for accessing and using ClockWorkMods ROM backup functions)
And of course ClockWorkMod itself – though this is installed by the process above and not through the market.
great - sticky?
Much better now. Ask a moderator for sticking it.
Thanks for the guide. I was having trouble rooting my Desire with Revoked3 but I managed using your guide Got SU now
Off to find a nice ROM
Glad it helped.
If you want the easy route, download ROM manager from the market. It will allow you to easily experiment with lots of different ROMs. It from the clockorkmod people so integrates totally with the clockwork mod recovery.

Nice Post, sticky deserved!
Wow..Thought it was a quick two step (Flash and reboot) method to install my Rom
Appreciate the lengths to which you have explained the procedure, would help people who are not clear about the intermediate steps. Thanks..
If you like, I'll open up Editor privileges on my site so that you can add a post there too.. PM me if you're like to..
Btw, I'd prefer that you turn the ROM/Data2SD installer download links to this: supernova.droidzone.in
Else, people might end up downloading an older version when I update the code..

Once it's been done a few times it is quick and easy. Also using ROM manager is another way to make it easy. It really was just the first time that it all seemed a little daunting. Also I didn't realise that I needed to download both the ROM and the DATA2SD file (seems obvious now, but somehow wasn't then).
I copied the short(er) version to my post on your site as you suggested.
I have left the download links at the moment because I used the Gingerburst ROM and that's the title I gave to the post, though I assume the steps are nearly exactly the same for all your ROMs. Also - Gingerburst has Sense 2.1, but Supernova has only got Sense 1.9.
If you are planning to focus all future development on Supernova then perhaps a title change to the post is required and then the links changed also? or otherwise a general title change to "...Stock FroYo to DROIDZONE roms" and a table with the links to the downloads required for each of the different ROM types?
Cheers for the guide, hadn't wanted to try rooting before but got fed up in the end and followed your guide - only bits I got stuck on were CWM not installing after revolution (but worked out how to install separately by searching on here) plus Gingerburst didn't work first time so tried a couple other roms (which didn't work either) but think was probably because I either hadn't partitioned the sd card properly (just used CWM to do it) or didn't do a full wipe of phone memory first either! Figured it out in the end (trial and error) so thanks a lot for the straightforward instructions - quite exciting getting it working and really pleased with Gingerburst! Not sure if I can be arsed trying anything else at the moment tho.
wow great job!! Thanks for the time and effort in typing all of that!
Glad the guide gave you the confidence to give it a go - though its a pity it didn't work first time.
I can't even imagine what happened that revolution did not install cwm - on mine it installed a v 4 (ROM manager didn't recognise it as a later version so in fact has installed a v 2 now instead)
I actually did use cwm to partition the SD card, but Gingerburst should install even if the card is not properly partitioned - you will just get loads of low memory warnings and force closes - until you partition the SD card and install the data2sd through cwm.
I must agree - now that I have Gingerburst and its working so well and I been installing so many apps from the market it really seems like a lot of effort (even using ROM manager) to bother trying anything else out!

Quick question guys, I've unlocked my orange handset using the desire sim unlock utility, should I follow these steps to change my rom or do I need to do the whole goldcard thing?

Guys, I think I rooted my Desire following this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044
what should I do now?
Is there a way to do it without the 'clockworkmod' ?
Also, if sometime I wanna go back to stock, is there a way to completely go back?
Thank you and have a nice day!
edit: forget all that, i wanna use the SuperNova rom =p i just cant delete the post for some reason

In the interest of Community and Theming in general I wanted everyone to have the Stock Framework so you could revert back if you so choose... Also themers please feel free to use the zips here to build your themes (they update System UI correctly). ANYONE can use this or any of my work... It's all about sharing in my opinion. Thats what ANDROID is all about... LET THE THEMING BEGIN!!
Instructions
1. You MUST have a deoxeded Rom.
2. After downloading the zip Put the zip in your phone files (not IN a file on the root or you phones file system (hint it shows as a disk when you hook up to your pc via usb).
3.. Go into recovery CWM (I use quickboot which is great and FREE on the market so i can go directly into recovery without shutting the phone off).
a.Start by turning the phone OFF.
b. Hold the volume up (or louder) button down. Then press the power at the same time and hold them both down. It boots into recovery CWM (its ORANGE in color)...
4. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "install zip from sdcard" (hopefully you've already put the zip in your phone files, see #2), once its highlighted hit the power button.
5. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
6. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to the zip you put on your phone and once its highlighted hit the power button.
7. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to " Yes - Install "whatever your zip is.zip" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
8. LET IT DO IT'S THANG. Once it's done at the bottom it will say "Install from sdcard complete."
9. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "+++++Go Back+++++" and once its highlighted hit the power button.
10. Using the up/down (volume buttons) navigate to "reboot system now" and once its highlighted hit the power button.

This replaces my framework-res and twframework-res, but not my Systemui.apk. I believe it may have something to do with the updater script.
Thanks though .
EDIT: Nevermind, somehow I've accidentally placed my systemui.apk inside my framework folder, so it now overrides my current one in system/app. How on earth does one reverse this? LOL!

I was comparing our zips (my ObsidianRed) and I have my framework and app folders under system while yours is just in the root of the folder. Is your updater script edited to work that way? It's interesting because it's different.

[GUIDE] Unbrick, Root, And Install CWM

How to Unbrick, Root, And Install CWM
Disclaimer: This guide is for your information only. I am not responsible for any further damage cause to your device by not following the guide correctly. Parts of this guide are based on the Unbricking guide produced by XDA member, Machzelet. Namely the Unbrick process.
This guide will give you step by step instructions on how to initially unbrick, root, and install ClockWorkMod Recovery on your LG Nitro HD. You will also learn how to make yourself a CWM backup that you can use to unbrick your Nitro whenever you need to... even when you are away from your PC.
NOTE: More people have had success using this guide on Windows XP than Windows 7.
It is understood by the author that CWM and CWM backups are nothing new to the XDA community. This guide is less about groundbreaking discoveries and more about clarification and introduction of an on-the-fly unbricking concept. As with all posts on the community forum, this guide is not set in stone and can/will be changed upon suggestion from other XDA Forum members.
Required Downloads

No, this will take you into the Korean version. It is essentially the same as Machzelet's guide. I just clarified a few of the steps, added a different rooting method, and explained ClockWorkMod Recovery installation and backup/restore.
nice, hopefully clears up the nuttiness that thread fell into. d'ling the zip now, well, i think i am, on another box.
FYI, I added a note to the guide about HO!NO!s CWM flashable ROM.
great guide, nice write up.
just to be sure, under restoring your backup after bricking #5. says to factory reset, then restore you CWM backup. Will your clockwork backups be deleted when you wipe data/factory reset, I think they usually are on my galaxy tab 7.0 plus.
thanks.

Download this file and copy it to your SD card.
Try replacing "dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13" in step 3 of the AT&T ROM section with "dd if=/sdcard/recovery-clockwork-5.8.2.0-p930.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13" and go through the steps again and ignore the ClockWorkMod Recovery install section.

guyss need some help please..
That *should* work. but, I've never had luck with just having a single space. It has only worked for me when i use a tab.
Also, do you still have the B2CAppSetup.exe application running?
Can we UN-sticky the "Official" guide and make this one the official? That OP did some great work, but won't update the steps to help people avoid common problems (ie. rename the kdz file). If people started using this one instead, it would be more beneficial to the community.
I tried to download this. but it told me 12 hours to download. wtf?

It's probably a big file because it contains 2 complete ROMS, plus other files.

help with cwm6 needed before flashing cm9

hi all....total Android noob here...
after a lot of research and some 'should i or shouldn't i' episodes, i've successfully rooted my wonder in order to flash to cm9. along the way i've discovered that it is 'desirable' to have cwm 6 installed first.
from what i understand, there are 2(?) ways of doing this...either via stock recovery in the ADB(?) shell or via ODIN...
ODIN *seems* to be the preferred method though. but here lies my problem.....i can't get it to work...i've found several links to download odin, and several links to download cwm 6.....also several different sets of instructions as to how to actually do it.....
it would really help if i had one set of downloads for odin and cwm 6 and one set of step by step, clear, precise, tried and tested instructions....
i've also tried nandroid backup as a 'partial' alternative to cwm 6, but it's not compatible with my phone.
additional info (if needed).....
os version - gingerbread 2.3.5
carrier - 3UK
kernel version - 2.6.35.7-perf-I8150XXK18-CL604835

many thanks in advance.....

Here is the way to flash CWM6 using Odin, if you wanna flash CWM5 just use the md5&ops files for CWM5, which you may need to find them somewhere
1. Download Odin & Ancora.ops & recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-ancora.tar.md5
2. Enable USB Debugging in Setting-Application- Development
3. Open Odin.
- Select the ops file, and enable one package in options
- then load the md5(recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-ancora.tar.md5) file with the One Package button.
- put ur phone it into download mode, first turn off phone, then hold Volume Down + Home + Power Button for a while.
- Phone will turn on and show some screen, then you plug in usb cable (it may look for the driver through Windows Update so please enable your computer's Internet connection).
Get the files (please find Odin from somewhere else): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446593
Good luck and sorry for my bad English~
THESE STEPS NEEDS ROOT & BUSYBOX, DOESN'T NEED PC & ODIN..

-then some text will show in bottom
-exit terminal.. check the recovery by turning off the device then turn on with volume up botton, home button, and power button pressed together.. until "Galaxy W" screen shows up, release the power button only.. then you will enter CWM
-navigate with up (up) n down (down) vol button and home keys (select) and power (back) and click "reboot system now" to reboot

did you forget to add -enable the "USB Debugging" on Setting-?
if you're gonna flashing stock rom with ODIN, you're not gonna need USB Debugging setting..
but if recovery, you need it..

Oh yea, thanks for reminding, I always enabled it so I forgot to mention that
Hi,
how can I know if CWM6 is compatible with my kernel?
Thanks a lot.
Model code: GT-I8150
Android version: 2.3.6
Version base band: I8150XXKL3
Kernel version: [email protected] #3
Build version: GINGERBREAD.XXLA2
as far as I know, recovery has it's own kernel..
Hi all...installed CM9 last night...all went well....
Have noticed that there's no Task Manager or Media Player Apps....is it just that I'm looking right at them and not recognizing them for what they are, or are they not included in the build?....if they're not included, which 3rd party apps would you recommend for use instead?.....
Also, for information, I had ONE minor glitch occurrence when using the camera.....as follows...
Started camera app..
Changed from primary to secondary (self portrait) camera...
Changed the exposure setting to +2....
App force closed.....
Apart from that, no other issues to report.....
A big thanks to everybody involved for taking the Galaxy W and producing such a fantastic alternative to 'stock'.....
PS......will cm10 be ported to the W?....lol...(got the Modding bug now . )
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda app-developers app
Hi again....can confirm that the force close camera issue (as described above), is a continuing problem on all increments of exposure compensation setting. With that in mind, is there a 3rd party camera app available that has the same functionality as the installed app but without the gimmicks?......
As mentioned before, CM9 really is a welcome step up from the 'stock' OS, so if the camera issue is the only issue with CM9, it's still worth 'taking that leap'.....
Once again, many thanks for the work put in on this....Keith
Sent from my GT-I8150 with CM9 using xda app-developers app
better you post that on "CyanogenMod 9 bug report & discussion thread" by THE-E.. so then the bug will added to the list
CM9 very good right if there weren't any bugs..

Moving CWM6 backups to PC
Hi guys, I have a question here. How can I move my backups I created using CWM6 to a PC so I can free up my internal sd space? I don't think those folders on clockworkmod\backup are full backups because the blob folder is much larger.
I'm using Samsung Galaxy W I8150, CWM 6.0.1.2, CM9 Alpha7.

have already and safe.. BUT:
-make sure your USB Cable is still in good condition.. if you are not sure, DO NOT MOVE CABLE WHILE COPYING FILES..
-you had fast enough PC.. DO NOT COPY FILES WHILE LAGGING
-NO VIRUS ON YOUR PC..
-make sure NO SOFTWARE BLOCKING YOUR PHONE DRIVER..
-if you backup to external sd, BETTER USE CARD READER TO COPY THOSE FILES TO PC
-IF ZIPPING OR RARING FILES, DP NOT COMPRESS LIKE CRAZY (COMPRESS NORMAL OR JUST STORE -without compression-)
-always reject/unmount removeable drive TO PREVENT CORRUPT FILES ON YOUR SD, USB, OR ETC..

[GUIDE][ROOT][CWR/TWRP][DEODEX][OVERCLOCKING] SGH-S730M - Samsung Galaxy Discover

Note: This is an old phone. It's no longer being supported by Samsung, and I see that nobody is selling this phone except for eBay or Amazon. I also have a new phone now and my Discover is simply sitting there for me to have fun with. I won't be actively developing for this phone. However, I will provide support with any issues you may encounter. This thread will be kept here for future reference if anyone needs help.
Update (2022): I am no longer using Android. This is my last update here.Copies of the relevant files are shared in this google drive link:

Please thank Ivdoan he is the mastermind behind finding and implementing root for this phone.
Thanks to JohnnyGalto for giving us updated CWM, TWRP, and Partition Tables!
THIS THREAD IS INTENDED TO USE ONLY FOR THE SGH-S730M, AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER PHONE. I CANNOT CONFIRM THAT IT WILL WORK ON ANY OTHER SGH-S730 VARIANTS, SO USE THIS THREAD AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DATA LOSS, OR BRICKING THAT IS A RESULT FROM YOU CHOOSING TO ROOT. HOWEVER, IF YOU SOFT BRICK YOUR PHONE, IT CAN BE FIXED VIA CLOCKWORK RECOVERY. WARNING ABOUT USING ODIN: IF YOU ARE A NOOB, ONLY CLICK ON THE BUTTONS I TELL YOU TO CLICK, AND NOTHING ELSE. I ACCIDENTALLY SOFT BRICKED MY PHONE BECAUSE I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON WHILE USING ODIN - AND DONT WANT YOU TO DO THE SAME THING. AND LASTLY, ROOTING AND MODDING THIS PHONE WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. SINCE THERE IS NO OFFICIAL WAY TO RETURN TO STOCK, ONCE YOU MODIFY YOUR PHONE: YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN FATE!

Issues and Bugs (Known Problems)
Okay, with deodexing - sometimes the SamsungIME.apk in the /system/app directory can be a pain to deal with! I put a warning in my deodex CWR script that tells about this issue. It does seem to correct itself overtime, so I am not too worried at the moment (but still very annoyed).
Also, it seems that many users have been experiencing strange battery problems (such as the phone suddenly losing half of its charge in 3 minutes). I hope it is an software issue (correctable), or just a battery issue (fixable), rather than a hardware issue (hard to fix).
Rooting, Custom Recovery, and Unbricking Guide (Everyone)
]If you want to root your phone then follow part A.
If you want to root your phone and add custom recovery then follow parts A and B.
If you have soft bricked your phone, then please complete all steps outlined below (if not already done yet).
The tutorial is done on a Windows computer and is meant for a Windows computer. Steps will vary slightly or tremendously if it is done on any other OS.
Part A - Rooting the SGH-S730m
1. Download and install UnlockRoot Free on your PC. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INSTALL BLOATWARE!!! PLEASE READ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!
2. Download and Install Samsung USB Drivers. If it prompts you to reboot for any reason, then reboot your Computer.
3. After all of this is over, you have to prepare yourself for the hardest part of this whole process, and maybe the most complicated dilemma you will ever face in the entirety of your lives.
4. Turn on your phone if it isn't already. Wait for the phone to fully boot.
5. Plug your phone into the computer via USB.
6. Run UnlockRoot on your computer and click the "Root" Button (when it prompts you to install bloatware apps on your device, say no).
DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE UNTIL UnlockRoot SAYS IT IS OK TO DO SO!!!!
Congratulations, you have should now have a rooted SGH-730m in proximity to your hands! :fingers-crossed:
How to verify your 730M is rooted
If by any reason, you feel unsure as to if your phone is actually rooted or not:
Install a root checking app.
These apps will tell you if your phone has root access or not.
Try Root Checker from the Google Play Store.
Install a terminal emulation app.
In these apps, type the command "su" (without quotes). If you get "permission denied" you have not rooted your device. If it prompts you for root privileges (ie a popup appears) then your device is rooted!
Try Terminal Emulator from the Google Play Store.
If you are a n00b (like me occasionally), and you fail to understand why something works, or, the exact opposite: Don't worry! You probably thought the auxiliary headphone jack was the USB port, or, thought you should unplug your phone early, despite me warning you not to do that. That's okay, you can get it fixed.
Part B - Installing a Custom Recovery
If you are not already acquainted with the idea of Custom Android Recovery, don’t be afraid. It allows developers, tweakers and noobs alike to backup, restore, fix, and to install custom ROMs and Kernels designed specifically for their device. It becomes extremely useful, because it allows people to remove “soft bricks†from their devices (which occurs when someone flashes data to the wrong device, or wrong parts of the device respectively).
I know you probably just want to not read this stuff anyways But I need to pay tribute to the developers Ivdoan and JohnnyGalto for there amazing work at compiling these custom binaries for the Samsung Galaxy Discover. Thanks guys.
So, lets get started – shall we?

YOU MUST ROOT YOUR PHONE BEFORE YOU DO THIS!!!!!
1. Download either the SGH_S730M.CWM_6.0.3.1.custom.recovery.tar.zip or the SGH_S730M.TWRP_2.5.0.0.custom.recovery.tar.zip file, and extract its contents to your desktop (if you don’t know what a desktop is, then please leave. You will probably break your device).
Just to clarify for those noobs out there: CWR stands for “ClockWork Recovery†and TWRP stands for “Team Win Recovery Projectâ€. They both are custom recoveries, and basically do the same thing. Personally, I would recommend the CWR for people that just want simplicity, and the TWRP for people that want more appeal. TWRP for this device is still under development, so be careful!

DO NOT MESS WITH ODIN! IT IS NOT A TOY! IT CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE!

3. Right Click on Odin, and click “Run as Administrator†(if available).
4. CLICK ON THE PDA BUTTON
5. When the file window appears, browse to the desktop directory (your desktop) and select either the S730M-CWR.tar.md5 or the S730M-TWRP.tar.md5 (depending on what version you downloaded).
6. Now shutdown your phone. Plug your phone into your computer. Boot into download mode by turning on the phone (release the power button as the phone vibrates) and holding the lower volume button and home key. Follow the instructions (press the upper volume button) to continue with download mode.
7. If your phone has been detected by Odin, the proceed.
8. Inside of Odin, press the Start button.
DO NOT DISCONNECT, UNPLUG, PLAY WITH ANY BUTTONS, OR CLICK ANYTHING ON EITHER THE PHONE OR COMPUTER UNTIL ODIN HAS FINISHED FLASHING CLOCKWORK RECOVERY ON YOUR PHONE.
8. To boot into clockwork recovery, hold down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
That should be IT! :highfive:
Part C - Soft Brick Recovery (CWM Recovery Only!)
YOU MUST HAVE A MICRO SD CARD WITH AT LEAST 400 MB OF FREE STORAGE SPACE TO DO THIS!
build.prop restore script
You need busybox installed on your phone in order to use this script! If you dont have busybox, it wont work.
If you messed up your build.prop file (If you did, then you will know that you did), then you can use this script to restore you build.prop file to the original stock format.
1. Download the build.prop restore script, to your device (preferably a computer).
2. Place the zip file to the root (/) directory of your micro SD Card.
3. Remove the SD card from the computer, and turn off the SGH-S730M.
4. Remove the back plating from the phone, and insert the micro SD card into the phone. It should be named SGH-S730M CWR stock build.prop.
5. After putting the phone back together, boot into recovery by holding down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
6. Using the volume buttons as scrolling keys, scroll down using the lower volume until you see install zip from sdcard as highlighted text. Using the power key as the enter button, click the power button.
7. Then, also using the volume keys, scroll down to the choose zip from sdcard option, and click the power button.
8. If you placed the zip file exactly where I told you to: you should see SGH-S730M CWR stock build.prop as an item. Scroll down to the file and click the power button. Then, when it prompts you to "Confirm Install", scroll down to "Yes - install".
9. Press the power button.
WAIT FOR THE PHONE TO BE 100% DONE EXECUTING THE SCRIP! YOU COULD MESS UP THE PHONE. DO NOT TURN OFF THE PHONE.
Full Restore (If all else fails)
To reduce confusion, please remove any backups that you may already have (which would be funny, you wouldnt have to do this anyways).
1. Download the rooted stock CWM Recovery Image (.zip) from here, to your device (preferably a computer). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2677332
2. Extract ALL of the contents of the zip file to the root (/) directory of your micro SD Card. The folder should be named "clockworkrecovery".
3. Remove the SD card from the computer, and turn off the SGH-S730m.
4. Remove the back plating from the phone, and insert the micro SD card into the phone.
5. After putting the phone back together, boot into recovery by holding down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
6. Using the volume buttons as scrolling keys, scroll down using the lower volume until you see backup and restore as highlighted text. Using the power key as the enter button, hit the power button.
7. Then, also using the volume keys, scroll down to the restore option, and click the power button.
8. If you extracted the zip file the exact way I told you to: you should see a menu option. If you didn't do what I told you to, you may see "No files found". If it says "cant mound /sd" (or something similar), you probably have a bad SD Card, or, forgot to put it in correctly.
9. Press the power button.
WAIT FOR THE PHONE TO BE 100% DONE RESTORING YOUR BACKUP TO THE PHONE! YOU COULD HARD BRICK THE PHONE (BECAUSE CWM RECOVERY WRITES TO THE BOOTLOADER). DO NOT TURN OFF THE PHONE. THE PHONE IS NOT FROZEN IF IT WONT RESPOND FOR A WHILE.
10. If you did this correctly, you should have a rooted, and restored SGH-S730m!
Part E - Removing that annoying triangle from the boot sequence
Use the triangleaway script in the attatchments. (triangleaway.zip)
It resets flash counter and resets binary status to official.
Might have to do a factory reset to return current status to official.
Boot your phone into recovery mode
Extract triangleaway.sh from the zip file.
Open up ADB Shell
push triangleaway.sh /tmp
chmod 755 triangleaway.sh
execute triangleaway.sh
Reboot Phone.
Overclocking and Modding (DEVELOPERS ONLY)
SYSTEM MODS
If you don't know what you are doing, then, please don't read any further. its for your own good
The CSC directory can be deleted (and the files in the main /system directory that are associated with it). It does not affect the phone at all. Also, If you go to /system/etc/feature_default.xml you can change the phones features. So far, I have done many tweaks to the Messaging, Phone, Settings, People (Contacts) and Lock screen of the phone! If you are a developer (or tweaker like me), you should be able to enable/disable whatever you like using the feature_default.xml.
Overclocking
FitAmp has made a overclocking script for 1GHz (1000MHz). There is quite a noticeable difference in response, but, the phone still tends to lag a bit. File is attatched to the thread (S730M-OC-1000MHz.zip)
Custom ROMs

do not disconnect, unplug, play with any buttons, or click anything on either the phone or computer until odin has finished flashing clockwork recovery on your phone.
1. Download the rooted stock cwm recovery image (.zip) i made from here, to your device (preferably a computer).
10. If you did this correctly, you should have a rooted, and restored sgh-s730m!
part d - soft brick recovery (twrp recovery only!)coming soon..
part e - removing that annoying triangle from the boot sequence..to a thread near you! (it's already here. I'm just organizing them so it is easier to understand and to use)
deodexing, overclocking and modding (developers only)
deodexing you rom
you must have a micro sd card with at least 100 mb of free storage space to do this!
so, after some work (and tons of patience), i managed to make a deodexed version of this phone. So, ive made a deodex script for cwr, that will remove you old /system/app and /system/framework directories, and makes new ones, with the new deodexed files.*
now, since this is considered a more "advanced" tweak, i am not going to post a step-by-step guide on how to do this.
Why? Well, if you really needed instructions to do this: You probably shouldn't be doing it anyways!
For developers: Make sure you have busybox installed, then install the zip here via cwr (its easy to see what file it is). Remember to wipe dalvik cache. There are some temporary bugs with the samsungime.apk, which wont work right for a while. Mysteriously though, the problem corrects itself after some time using the phone. Reply your findings!
For noobs: Don't do this, it will just make no difference, and i honestly don't feel like solving problems that don't need to be solved (or, ones due to illiteracy). Wait until you know what you are doing (and what an odex file is), then try this yourself.
system mods
if you don't know what you are doing, then, please don't read any further.
If you are a devleloper (or tweaker like me), you should be able to enable/disable whatever you like using the feature_default.xml.
overclocking
fitamp has made a overclocking script for 1ghz (1000mhz). There is quite a noticeable difference in response, but, the phone still tends to lag a bit. File is attatched to the thread (s730m-oc-1000mhz.zip)
please click :good: If it works for you!

Hey guys,
have we found a way to fix my problem with the phone, I still have no access to download, recovery, normal boot and it stays on for 7 secs max. This has ocured because I flashed the wrong file to modem. Let me know as I want to start working on development again.

I've searched around a bit, and the best option would be to send it for repair IMO.

SGH-730G Users ONLY
Here is a thread I started this morning about the SGH-730G (Tracfone, Net10, Straight Talk) variant of the Discover. I created this thread so there wouldn't be confusions due to the slight differences between the 730G and the 730M variants. Right now there is a root method listed, and I am working on an Odin flashable recovery from soft brick. I will also be posting things that I have figured out so far, and in the next day or so a full deodexed version of the stock firmware. Coming later will be a custom rom. If anyone in this thread has dev experience and has the 730M variant, PM me about this custom rom as I would like to make it compatible with both versions of the phone but will have to work out the differences between the two to make it fully compatible. New thread for the 730G - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47417608

Word. I know some people were confused in another thread. Root methods are basically the same but there are structual differences between them when it comes to mounting points for restore and such. Thanks for addinthe link to the OP. I'll go back in a few and add a link here in my OP for the same purpose.

You can use unlockroot software to unroot.
I tested rooted and unrooted.

Ok thank you very much for your reply
Take a look at This, I've created a flashable zip that both roots the phone and installs the overclock kernel found in this thread. Thought you might be interested
edit: I also just posted a flashable stock rom here. it's deodexed, rooted, and overclocked.

Did you make a CWM backup before doing it? If you did, boot into CWM recovery and flash the recovery package.
