I have 2.6gb free, and I cannot install or update any apps. insufficient storage keeps popping up. Is there a fix for this on the Galaxy S4? I am running stock rom and kernel, just rooted.
Have you tried a reboot? Or clearing data on the play store app?

yep, tried clearing data and cache from playstore, and google frameworks. Rebooted into recovery, wiped dalvik. Uninstalled and freed up to 4.6gb of space and it still says insufficient storage.
This is a bug that showed up for me in JB and I think it has to do with rooting as well (not sure).
(HINT - The error is really not insufficient storage but this is the only error code that playstore understands...)
But here is the fix-
1. Use a root explorer and go to /data directory
2. (I'm on conference call right now so I cannot verify the dir names but they should be close) Go to the applib and the data directories (/data/applib and /data/data), there ought to be folders of the app that you cannot install, just delete them and go back to the playstore and install the update.
3. If there error still there then, go to /data/app as well, and delete the app completely.
4. WARNING, you will (may) lose the settings for whatever app you have error with, so you may want to backup the app beforehand and then restore the app (data only) after doing all of this.

I used to get such errors even on a custom firmware based off Sprint's stock Evo 3D ice cream sandwich image... wish I would've known this sooner. (I also used app2sd and even though I had like half of my SD card left it would still toss up this error.)

I've tried to search around for some info but had no luck. I am also not allowed to post in the DT A2SD thread as I do not have a high enough post count. The problem is this:
A few apps that I am reinstalling from Titanium Backup are failing to install. I just partitioned my SD card (32gig class 10) to a 1gig EXT4 with a 32mb swap. I'm only moving apps and kept the Dalvik on internal memory for now. I started to restore my apps through Titanium Backup and the restore goes fine for awhile but then does a soft reboot toward the end. I've attempted this twice and had it happen both time. I am able to finish installing most of my apps when it turns back on except for 4. I get a failed to install from Titanium backup and the market when i try to restore them. My guess is that there is some partial installs from the soft reboot that are already on the EXT partition preventing them from installing. Any idea to a way to get these apps to reinstall again? Thanks for any help!

Edit: Just moved Dalvik to SD and still no luck
Edit2: Solved! Delete the smdl2tmp1.asec file from your .android_secure folder on your SDCard
Edit3: By deleting the whole .Android_Secure folder I am able to install apps after it has issues with rebooting the rom after an app install.

I just had this happen with a few apps. I went into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications and found some let overs which I then removed, which allowed me to reinstall.
The one I had was actually the XDA App. I found the com.tapatalk.xda file (something relatively close to that) removed and was able to reinstall.

I checked in there and the apps are not showing in manage applications either. Thanks for the advice tho.
Yeah I didn't have the full app in there either but I did find those com.* files when you look at all apps that seemed to be related.
I probably just got lucky and found that one to be the problem.

I even double checked for the com files and only have a few android ones that do not seem related to the apps in question.
Solved: I ended up having an error installing a new app from the market and got a error 18. Found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755970
I was unable to remove the file in terminal so I just booted into recovery, mounted my sdcard, went into the .android_secure folder and deleted the smdl2tmp1.asec file there. By doing that I was able to install the app I wanted and install my older apps from the market. Didn't even bother using TB to restore them just in case.

I mentioned I also had an issue with the rom rebooting after installing apps. I deleted the .Android_Secure folder and I was able to continue to install apps again. Just a FYI if anyone has the issue.
HELP! I am running the latest SPRINT LOVERS ROM and have been having an issue with downloading NEW apps from the market and also installing updates to APPS. I could not get ANYTHING to install or download using the LATEST MARKET so I flash the OLD market to my phone. for the past week or so, I have been able to download SOME new apps and update SOME APPS. However, some apps, I had to uninstall and THEN reinstall or else I would get a INSTALL FAILED message. Now as of today, I cant download ANY new APPS as it downloads and then TRIES to install and I get a DOWNLOAD FAILED. In CATLOG I see "DEXOPT FAILED" and it references the downloaded file I was just downloading.
How do I fix this so that I can download again. I see in the android market forum that LOTS of people are having this issue but there is no resolution. I though it might be the memory card but I tried a different one and SAME issue. I also cleared the cache and DALVIK cache and same issue (the dexopt failed mentions the DALVIK CACHE). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Well, you can try reflashing the rom, going into apps clearing the market cache, reboot, or flash the newest gapps.

I have tried all of that.. SAME issue.. I'm not the only one with this issue.. I did a google search and a LOT of people have this issue.. all over different forums and the android market forum too!
GOOGLE must know about this and why arent they saying anything? there was a forum message that even had a google employee who commented and said they were working on the issue but no response again...

Go into recovery and wipe ur cache. The market stores apps there when downloading before it installs to the correct file on ur phone

I wiped cache and dalvik cache... Same issue....
The problem isn't the market, well the upgrading/installing new apps part isn't. There is a temp file that is on your sd card which is for the market, if that file gets corrupted or flagged with low on space, it'll prevent updates/new installs from happening. To fix this you need to delete that file, you can only see this file via plugged into a computer as a storage device then go to .android_secure and in there will be a random named file with .tmp at the end. Just delete that, unmount and restart the phone, after that it's back to installing again.

I dont have that TMP file in the folder mentioned. I know whichj on you are referring to and a while back I had this file which prevented me from installing files.. But I dont have it now.. any other ideas??
Note: the file is called smdl2tmp1.asec and I dont have it ...
Now something else strange... I SHOULD be able to download and install APPS with the card unmounted.. I cant EVEN download an APP if the card is mounted on the PC or unmounted from the phone settings.. any ideas
Also I notice that some times the phone will reboot while doing an install from market. I googled and saw others with this issue.

OK well I found something on another forum that mentioned re-flashing the ROM overtop fixed the market errors.. Well, it put the NEW market back and I cant download or INSTALL anything. I now am flashing the old market back.. any ideas? the new market wont even start a download as it ERRORS right away with DOWNLOAD failed...
Acer Iconia A100 Tab, ICS, rooted, unlocked, backed up, CWM, Superuser.
The A100 comes from the factory with 8GB internal memory and I added a 32GB chip. Fine, but as expected, I soon got the dreaded "Insufficient memory available" message. The A100 has an inherent design flaw which does NOT allow apps to be transferred to SD (have tried everything).
I've successfully swapped the mount points and now have combined the internal 8GB and the external 32GB to act as one single drive. The machine now sees itself as having 40GB of internal storage. Works perfectly BUT...
...now I'm permanently getting the ol' "Insufficient storage available" message on EVERY app I try to install. Even worse - I've done massive uninstalling of almost ALL my programs, and now I can't re-install ANY apps with getting the insufficient storage message, either from Play Store, or as a standalone apk installer file.
I've tried;
- Lucky Patcher
- rebooted countless times
- set all system files and folders to RW
- every type of cache cleaning program
- increased my swap filesize to maximum
- every type of past-program-cleanup tidy program
- tested, verfified, but still replaced, the 32GB sd chip
- used a terminal emulator to properly rewipe the cache folder
- restricted the list or startup programs to only system-required apps
- using SDK, have tried both the "set install apps to internal" and external drives
There is very little left on my system now (95% free), and the system runs beautifully and passes all diagnostics. I've just reached the point now where I cannot install or reinstall even the tiniest tiny programs. Of the few remaining programs, I dare not uninstall CWM, Superuser or ADB Control, for fear of not being able to even restore past backups.
In short, the more capacity I give back to the system, the less capacity it has.
Any thoughts/suggestions? (other than using it as a doorstop)
IF you have GPS enabled, look for the GPS data files (I can't remember exactly where) as the GPS on some of these tablets (like mine) repeatedly download AGPS data at will filling up part of the memory. Not sure if this is your issue, but this caused me all kinds of insufficient memory problems with my A100.
Yup, check the /data/GPS folder. If you use GPS it gets loaded with dated .txt cache files. The only fix is deleting them every once and a while or factory reset if your not rooted,

Thanks for your input. Yes, by this point I've ended up with a long checklist of regular things to do just to take any argument away from the machine. I regularly clear the data from Play Store and Frameworks. The GPS has been disabled for weeks, and was set to not update from any source other than straight GPS satellites (non-network). I killed off the few GPS data files I did find.
The available storage is now down to 382mb, and seems to be dropping by 50mb per day - while it simultaneously tells me I have 28GB free! WTF?
I now only have about 7 programs installed, excluding the obvious factory preinstalled ones.
CWM - 384kb
ES File Explorer - 5.7mb
Android Assistant - 1.74mb
Acer Recovery Installer - 2.55mb
Lucky Patcher - 5.62mb
ROM Manager - 5.32mb
Link2SD - 0.94mb
Wake Lock - 72kb
If I uninstall any of these in the vein hope of trying to clear any more space, I won't be able to put them back. Everytime I boot, I get the "Low space" warning, and no apps can be installed at all.
Just a thought - under Data Usage > Removed Apps > it shows an ever-climbing graph, and says Foreground: 0.00B, Background 2.70GB Is this just a record of past activity? Or does it show actual space that's being consumed? If so, I can see no way of clearing it. The View app settings button is greyed out.
I was having a similar problem although I never figured out what was the deal I used pio's black hole wipe and reinstalled my rom and everything works great now.

Are you sure its not Lucky Patcher (yes I know this app is frowned upon here on xda)?
Open Lucky Patcher > Go to troubleshooting > click "remove fixes and backup".

I was going to mention that app tends to cause that error, its come up before. Any further discussion concerning that app should be taken to PM or off forum completely.
I would suggest the black hole wipe or at least a hard reset and leave that app out of the next install. No restores just fresh installs from play store.

Lucky Patcher was the last app I was successfully able to install a few days ago, and I only put it on in a last ditch effort to try and solve the 'insufficient memory available' problem which had been growing steadily worse over the past two weeks.
I did a hard reset and confirmed a clean running virginal machine, although I still got the 'Low space' and 'Insufficient memory available' message, but I did a another backup just to be safe. I then followed the black hole wipe to the letter. Everything went smoothly through each step, and now when the phone boots, it just sits there displaying the Acer logo for eternity.
When I do a recovery boot, I can now only get
"Erasing Cache before SD update...
SD update cmd: recovery
Booting recovery kernel image
Recovery verified failed..."
Did this just brick my tab? Or does someone know of a way out? Obviously the PC or ADB no longer recognizes it.

Uh no. It doesn't touch boot, recovery, external SD or bootloader. Recovery verified failed means your boot loader is locked.

Wow! That's good news! (maybe) So... if I can unlock the bootloader then, in theory, I should be able to continue restoring the tab? Please excuse my vertical learning curve on this. If I understand correctly, there is no bootloader unlocker for the A100 iteself, but apparently there's a compatible one for the A200 that can be used.
From my tab's current state, could you please tell me what the next step(s) are?

I'm starting to get an "Out of space" message when installing apps. It happened a couple of times from Market, and now its happening when I side load apps. From all indications I have plenty of space (11 GB free). I've cleaned cache, force stopped Market and Google Frameworks clearing their cache, rebooted into recovery and wiped cache, wiped dalvic, and fixed permissions. Its getting to the point that Market updates are hit and miss as to whether they will install. Is this a RAM issue? What can I do next? Running JR6 w/ Franco #264. Thanks.

Check if you have a .odex file in /data/data (from Titanium Backup)
if you do, delete it. That caused some issues for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do use TiBu but seaching with Root Explorer, I did not have any odex files in that folder. I do have less than 20 odex files total, most located in the /data/app/ folder, ranging in size from a few kB up to 3 MB. Are they safe to delete? Not even sure if I go back to an earlier nandroid, I may still end up with the same problem. Its not crippling at the moment, so I'll hang on for a while to see if there are any other ideas I can try before wiping and reloading.
EDIT:
OK, one of the odex files in the /data/app folder was from the program I could not install. I deleted it, and was then able to install the program. WTH? I tested deleting one of the other odex files (to see if I could just delete them all) and the program would just FC immediately. I guess the only odex files that are safe to delete are of apps you no longer use. Not sure why the odex file kept me from installing the program, but at least it is fixed. Thanks to Lesicnik1 for putting me on the right track. Cheers.

I recently get this error probably after I rooted my device, whenever I try to download something from play store. When I click install or click accept (after clicking install) I get this error (10/10 cases). Then I keep getting it on a random basis. I deleted the data and cache (even rebooted between each one), then went to play store. It shows the apps and works for a long period of time (but eventually shows the error). But when I try to download something, I happens again. I checked the Download Manager and it is enabled.
I had backed up the play store using Titanium backup, then wiped its data and then uninstalled it from the system. Don't ask why lol.
But when I tried to restore it, Titanium backup was stuck at its progress. Then I had to place the APK of the backed up play store (the updated version of the play store (5.0.31) not the factory version.) in the /system/apps/ and set the rx- r-- r-- permissions. I checked the Titanium backup backup file and apparently it had some data for the data/data path. So I manually put it there and set the permissions like any other folder that is there. Keep in mind that I tried to reboot in between each attempt.
I used OpenVPN to access it but no luck.
Tried to delete dalvick-cache folder, but that didn't fix it neither.
Booted into safe mode, cause I thought maybe some of the applications are causing this like Xposed, Greenify and SetCPU (which I uninstalled just in case). This again didn't do it.
I rooted the device with Kingo root using a pc.
Android is 4.4.4.
My only guess left is that I should find the factory version of the Google Play that was installed?
As you can see I'm kind of running out of options here.
Could somebody offer an advice besides factory reset and being careful next time??
