unable to format sdcard in cwm

I'm basically trying to move to the dalvik cache to my sd card for space reasons. I'm trying to format my sdcard for use with link2sd and other programs like it but I'm unable to do so in cwm. whenever i choose partition sdcard, it gives me the dialog like it does it correctly but nothing actually happens. I tried to partition the card on my pc but none of the link2sd programs recognize it. its as if the only thing those programs recognize is the internal storage and to my knowledge I can't do anything with that. if i can do it manually and avoid using the programs that'd be awesome. can anyone point me in the right direction?

...I'm kind at a loss for why you would want a virtual machine cache on an sd-card and not emmc. Perhaps I am 'not getting it'...care to explain?

i've had this problem for a couple of weeks now...downloads from the market over a certain size just won't go through. "insufficient space" "invalid package file" errors like those would pop up. i went to term. emulator and to check the mount sizes and my dalvik cache was 98% full. in titanium backup i saw an option to "integrate sys dalvik into ROM". i enabled that and it moved over 150 items from the dalvik to someplace in the system. that cleared up some space and now i'm only using 82% of the dalvik and i'm able to download and update from the market like normal. i know this problem is gonna come back and i'm trying to avoid it by moving the dalvik to the sd card where the space is plentiful.

I've never encountered this problem...I flash like crazy...I also migrate over all of my apps via TB...so...I have like 4 or 5 phones worth of apps following me around from rom to rom.....I don't have many big apps, so, of course YMMV--and likely will--but....perhaps this isn't, in fact, the actual problem but a symptom of another problem.
Have you had this issue with multiple roms? When was the last time you did a full wipe? On every phone I have either the stock rom or my favorite rom that I always go back to, no matter what, more than any other rom.....via nandroid....and I have never encountered this problem....any other customizations we should know about?

I've never had this issue before. I'm on the latest Calkulin ROM since I've switched from my HD2. This is the first time I've had this error pop up and I resolved it by moving some things around in the dalvik and freeing up some space. As stated earlier TB moved around 150 items and afterwards I was instantly able to download/update from the market. I don't really customize my phone other than the random theming here and there. I've switched ROMs back and forth to see if it was in fact the ROM and not something I did but the issue came back as soon as I restored my backed up apps via TB. I'm guessing the cache filled up with the data from the apps that are backed up with TB.

Here's one solution/quick fix: manually delete your dalvik cache with a file manager and then just flash an odexed Rom: Then your space issues would be solved, and there's not the issue of Dalvik taking up any room in the first place.

...and I have always preferred odex'd roms. makes sense.

so there's no way of installing the programs mentioned in the first post?

CM supports init scripts, right? Download Calkulin's ROM from the Dev section, extract it and check system/etc/init.d for a dalvik2cache (going by memory here, might not be the exact name) script. Might be able to use that.

[Q] Had low memory after apps update, will not boot now - MIUI-XJ

Hey guys, got a strange problem here. I'm running MIUI-XJ 2.3.30 A2SD.
Had 8 apps to update via Google Play and 31mb internal left (over 600mb on sd-ext, too). In the middle of updating the apps I've got a Google Play crash followed by few other fc's, phone said my internal memory is too low to operate and such - so I tried the most obvious fix, which is of course rebooting the phone.
That was a mistake, apparently. Phone will not boot anymore - goes through the bootscreen and gets stuck on the yellow MIUI splash. It's not a bootloop, the phone just freezes and the only thing I can do is battery removal. Tried booting it up with no sd card as well, nothing seems to help though.
Is there anything I can do except full wipe via recovery? I had some important sms and spent quite a bit of time customizing the desktop, I'm not to keen on doing that again.
Is it possible to delete some apps via adb or something like that? Or is there a point in trying to install the rom again on top of my system?

Try clearing dalvik cache and cache from recovery and then boot. Thereafter clear some space or change your a2sd scheme.

Problem is, it still does not seem to help though - wiped /cache and dalvik-cache on data, sd-ext and system - still nothing, same problem persists. Stuck at MIUI bootanimation.
Any other ideas? I'm really kind of desperate to recover the data.

- Take a nandroid backup first. So you can start over if need be.
Some things to try
- Only flash ROM and see if it helps.
- Wipe data. Flash ROM fresh. Install Titanium Backup. With TB locate nandroid on sdcard and try to extract your data. Maybe restoring the launcher and messaging will do the trick. Not sure . Try. You can always start over.
- Fix permissions in recovery

There's an app called AROMA Filemanager that can be started from recovery and allows you to modify all phone partitions, all you need is to mount them before starting the app. Here it is:

Tried flashing the ROM again on top of my system - no effect whatsoever, still gets stuck at bootanimation. Also, tried the permission fix as well as the RMD recovery "apk uid mismatches" fix. Still nothing.
Going to give the AROMA a try, having some problems right now though - using RMD recovery, no touch support. Trying to flash 4ext touch from fastboot somehow!

UPDATE//
Managed to get the AROMA up and running, deleted few apps from /data/apps, nothing to delete from /system really. /cache is cleared, so are all 3 dalvik-cache folders.
System still does not want to start.
Any ideas what might have happened? Seems like I'm running out of options and will have to do a clear install, after all.

You probably damaged some important system files so tho phone can't load system. The best solution is to restore some nand backup if you have, or to do a full wipe and start from scratch.

If that was the case, reflashing the ROM on top of my current system should fix the problem, while it didn't - right? Also, I find it hard to believe that "important system files" could have been damaged during routine Google Play apps update...

[Q] SGH-T989 frozen in time, advice requested, any ideas?

Hello, everybody. I have a T-Mo SGS2 SGH-T989 that's frustrating me, and I'm hoping one of you might understand what's happening and how to fix it. Its software seems to be frozen in time. Every time I reboot it, no matter what I've done to it, it opens on the homescreen I had in place as of last Thursday (6 September). As soon as it boots it downloads updates for every app that's had an update come out since then. Any apps I have tried to install since then give me a "could not be downloaded due to an error. (492)" message, and any already-installed apps I delete magically reappear unchanged as soon as I reboot. Not only that, but all the app cache data is frozen in time, too; Poweramp opens with the player cued to the middle of a track I had last listened to over Bluetooth in my car last Thursday, the Kindle app opens to a page within a book I had read last Thursday, etc. I can't make any permanent changes to my phone for no obviously apparent reason, though it's for the most part functional. To top it all off, though, after being powered on for a few hours, apps start randomly force closing until I reboot it again! I've been running essentially the same software environment on it for a couple of months, and up until last Thursday it was rock-solid reliable. I'm not a complete n00b, but I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like to devote to progressing beyond rank amateur status, and having my phone not completely functional is bugging the spit out of me. I've been trawling this and other forums as much as I can since then, and I can't make head or tail of this problem. Anybody have any ideas?

I keep encountering error messages in cwm and adb saying error mounting /sdcard, error mounting /sd_ext, error mounting sdcard/android.secure, etc. What really blows my mind is that everything seems to be working just fine in ODIN while I'm flashing it - until the phone reboots and shows me exactly the same environment it had before I flashed it. I had avast! Anti-Theft installed, and I disabled its device administrator privileges and uninstalled it before I made any of these attempts to fix it, but it keeps reappearing too. I'm at a loss.

Yeah what he said.. You could always try a virus scan, however I have heard they aren't that reliable.. Easiest fix would be get a warranty replacement and be done with it.

Oh, dear.
I wouldn't have thought I had downloaded anything especially sketchy. I won't install an app unless it's got a lot of positive reviews, but I suppose that's no guarantee of absence of malware. The trouble with sending it in for warranty service is, I've voided my warranty by rooting it and installing a custom ROM, and I can't flash it back to stock.

If you already have a back up try this out. Format system, Format data, Format cache. Wipe cache partition, Wipe dalvik, Wipe data/Factory Reset. Do all these twice not once but twice then reinstall backup rom and reboot. See if this fixes the problem.

Creating a backup was the first thing I did after I rooted it, so I did what you suggested. The first four steps went well enough:
Reboot to recovery ---> mounts and storage ---> format /system ---> Yes - Format ---> Done. (x2)
mounts and storage ---> format /data ---> Yes - Format ---> Done. (x2)
mounts and storage ---> format /cache ---> Yes - Format ---> Done. (x2)
wipe cache partition ---> Yes - Wipe Cache ---> --Wiping cache... Formatting /cache... Cache wipe complete. (x2)
When I went to wipe dalvik, I got this error the first time:
advanced ---> Wipe Dalvik Cache ---> E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
So I tried it again, and it seemed to work:
Wipe Dalvik Cache ---> Dalvik Cache wiped.
Just to be sure, I tried it a third time and got the error again:
advanced ---> Wipe Dalvik Cache ---> E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
After several more tries, it seems to be alternating back and forth between telling me it works and giving me an error message, so I moved on:
wipe data/factory reset ---> Yes -- delete all user data --->
It seemed to partially work, but also gave me an error:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android.secure...
Error mounting /sdcard/.android.secure!
Skipping format...
Data wipe complete.
I tried it again three more times and got the same results, error mounting /sdcard/.android.secure. Moving on, I tried to restore a backup:
- backup and restore ---> restore ---> E:Can't mount /sdcard (x4)
The thought occurred that it might be trying to access an external SD card rather than internal storage, so I re-installed the one I had removed prior to mucking about trying to wipe things and tried again:
- backup and restore ---> restore ---> Couldn't open directory. No files found.
This was new, so I went back to the wipe data/factory reset step:
wipe data/factory reset ---> Yes -- delete all user data --->
This time it seemed to work without any errors:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android.secure...
Data wipe complete. (x2)
Since that seemed to work, I repeated all steps from the beginning and moved on to the restore step:
- backup and restore ---> restore ---> Couldn't open directory. No files found. (x2)
I tried the restore from internal sdcard option:
- backup and restore ---> restore from internal sdcard ---> Couldn't open directory. No files found. (x2)
I then tried the "- advanced restore" and "- advanced restore from internal sdcard" but with the same results ---> Couldn't open directory. No files found. (x2)
Then I rebooted it:
- reboot system now --->
And yet again, it behaves as though it's been powered down since Thursday before last.

Did I brick my SGS3 ? ^_^

All right, first thing first. Thanks to everybody for this amazing forum and all support.
Well. Here's my story:
1) Planned on installing CM10 nightly
2) Went to recovery (TWRP v2.2.0) and by mistake wiped everything :/ (Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, System Internal Storage)
3) In effect i wiped everything including system.
4) Still have access to TWRP and download mode.
Does anybody have a clue how to fix that and install CM10 again?
PS.
1) internal storage does not mount under system (WIN7)
2) TWRP does not recognize microSDXC (32gbz) formated to either exFat or NTFS. (Tried 4 (four) of them)
Should i buy another micro sd like 2gb, format it to Fat32 and drop CM.zip there ? Or need i do something else?

Hey thank you for quick answer. Do you know if there is any limitation for TWRP? It does not read my 32gb MicroSDXC.

Go into download mode and re flash then stock rooted rom.
Then install your twrp and try cm again.

Personally, I would (try to?) use adb with the phone booted into TWRP to transfer the ROM you want to flash over to the phone's internal storage, and go from there.
If that's not a possibility for whatever reason, you'd be best off starting by reflashing a stock rooted image with Odin and going from there.

Well. First of all thank you all for all your help in support. Got it back to stock with root (Odin flash). However there is another small problem that i can't figure out. TWRP itself seem not to have access to anything. I mean it sees all / but after openning /sdcard or anything else all it sees is empty folders. It doesn't have an access to external sd either (when you check log it sees that it couldn't mount ext sd correctly [even if after boot to stock system it recognizes it witout any issues).
Any idea how to solve this problem? What has been tried:
1) Reflash recovery (TWRP 2.2 using ODIN)
2) moving all files to /
3) RootExplorer see files (cm.zip) after reboot TWRP doesn't
4) Installing GooManager (it crashes after granting supersu permissions)

With all those problems, flash to stock rooted and start over. You will be better off in the long run. You may want to also format your external sd.
Don't flash twrp with Odin.
Rooted stock
Dl and use goo manager to get twrp

What about a stock kernel? Just my chime in

1) ReFlashed to rooted stock (root66_ATT_I747UCDLK3.tar.md5)
2) Installed GooManager
3) Installed TWRP (using GooManager)
4) Downloaded lastest CM10 nightly (cm-10.1-20121218-NIGHTLY-d2att.zip) using GooManager
5) Flashed cm-10.1-20121218-NIGHTLY-d2att.zip from GooManager menu (FlashROM) - Wiped Dalvik & Cache
Now I'm stacked with CM boot splash for past 5 min hoping it just takes longer that it should.
Any ideas?

GJ take it sure and slow. Other than flashing stock/rooting form Odin I wouldn't flash anything form Odin. Once you have super user on your phone, leave Odin out and do everything from phone
That's the safest route and it gets easier from here. The countless hours you spent are much easier the more you do it. Shouldn't take more than 20 minute to backup and flash roms and new apps from now on

Almost done. But here are another tiny problems that just bother me and but I think they're solvable.
1) GooglePlay suddenly gives "No Connection" error, even though every other app that requires connection (Messenger, Browser) work just fine.
Have to mention that it worked for a while, installed couple apps (drop some more to install in queue and when I woke up - FAIL!)
Things done:
-Forced to stop
-ClearedData & Cache
Is there any other solution to fix it rather than reflashing gapps ?

1. you are flashing a version of gapps that is out of touch with your rom or you did not flash it correctly/cleanly. I remember no matter how many times I flashed gapps I wouldn't get it to sync. Backed all user apps to Titanium backup. Did a clean install from scratch, and wallah it worked. Last sort.
Without doing that though there is usually one that is compatible that is listed on your rom page. Flash that one. For me that is 10/22 but I remember it giving that same error for a while so I ended up flashing the previously compatible version before that which was 7/26. Goo.im might help here, I haven't used it myself. Once you find a working gapps version etc. Store your 'safe' builds in one folder
2. Not sure what you mean. When you click your phone you should see internal and external storage on your phone. They are what they say they are. People tend to piss on not being able to find the right file size and folder attributes on this phones usb mount. It is a common problem. Probably one of the few problems on the phone. Annoying but manageable

1) Ended up reflashing gapps with goomanger (script to TWRP)
2) What i mean is that under phone it recognizes them perfectly. Just when I connect phone through USB to PC, my PC tends to mix them up. Just shows ExSD as Internal and Internal as ExSD. No biggy, just tried to fix as many tiny issues as possible before I hit deployment.

I'm still having the issue after the format. I have 312 mb free and still get the low space.

Also, whenever I run Facebook, it pops up saying "This device is low on freek disk space..." and that it may be unstable, blah blah.
I'm running IceCream Senseless ?.?.? (1.1.1 or maybe 1.0,I'm not really sure now). I'm pretty sure when I installed the rom that it made the 750mb partition. I don't remember installing any other mods other than adrenaline.
Side story: I thought I had ICSenseless 1.0 -- so I tried to update to 1.1.1. Cleared Dalvik, and cache, ran rom. After boot at the home screen a message popped up that said the UID inconsistent, and the "I'm feeling lucky" button (which was a nice addition.) Then I looked up that error on xda -- but decided to just go back to my backup before I installed 1.1.1. I Noted that even in 1.1.1 the low space icon was still there....
Anyway...
Root, yes; s-off, yes.
Did a nandroid backup, then cleared dalvik and cache partitions to see if that would help at all -- no, not really.
I don't think I have EXT4 installed. I ran a query in the console and it didn't come back with anything.
Please let me know if you have any ideas, or if I should post this in IceCream Senseless' thread, or if I should just make a new thread.

The low space is due to /data/data partition being filled up. CM 7.2 has a good workaround to free space. Though if you want another fix, the no data limit normal dalvik linked in that thread can help. It will move everything from /data/data to /data and use only /data. This will take up more space on /data but the 750 MB will be shared.

lag and program problems
So I installed the "no data limit normal dalvik" and then my phone didn't like it I suppose.
The phone started having lots of lag. It would take a bit to register my touch -- even the hepatic feedback was delayed. Loading programs, swiping on anything, or un/locking my screen would be slow and jerky. Programs would be closing by themselves, or would prompt to force close. Even connecting to an incoming call would take upwards of 5 seconds.
I'm not sure what to do except roll back to a nandroid backup.
Any ideas?
Also, should I do a factory reset before installing a rom? (that won't wipe my sd card will it?)
Will factory reset wipe out ClockworkMod? What about root permissions?
