I have a problem, that I hope someone here can help me with.
I have 2 devices, a digital camera and a phone:
- Canon Powershot G10
- HTC Touch Diamond
The Diamond is capable enough that I don't always need to take a laptop with me when I am travelling. But I still need to transfer pictures from the camera to the internet. The phone can upload to the internet if only I could get the pictures onto the phone! So I want to find a way to transfer selected pictures from the camera to the phone *without* using a computer.
As I can see it, there are several different ways to go about this, but I haven't found a solution yet:
1) Find a device similar to the iPod Camera Connector that would let me connect the camera to the phone via USB. Note that it is not enough to have a device that copies all photos. I need to select which photos will be copied. Copying 16GB of pictures onto the 4GB phone is not an option.
2) Find an SD card reader that can connect to the HTC Touch diamond directly.
3) Find a bluetooth adapter for the camera that will allow file transfers.
4) Find some way (hardware and/or software) to make the phone work like a PictBridge-compatible printer, so that I can "print" selected photos from the camera to the phone.
5) Find some software and/or hardware that will make the phone work as a USB host. If that was possible, reading SD cards is trivial.
I have searched and searched for solutions to this problem but so far without a result.
Needless to say, the solution needs to be both cheaper than a laptop and especially smaller and lighter than a laptop. Otherwise I could just bring a laptop.
I hope someone here can help me realize the full potential of my HTC Touch Diamond!
Best regards,
Mikkel
without usbHost nothing can make the usb connector in the diamond be
and activeparty
it can interduce itself to the camera as usbMasstorage but can connect itself to anything
so your camera would have to be the activepart no matter if you PictBridge, sdcardreader or iPod Camera Connector
the extUSB on your device is miniUSB input only when usbHost is not supported
plus audio out
Thank you for your reply.
As far as I know, neither the camera nor the Diamond has the capability to act as a USB host. Connecting them directly is therefore probably not an option. That is why I listed the various things that I have thought could go inbetween.
The iPod camera connector is such a device: a device that can connect 2 USB clients to each other. Unfortunately it only works on an iPod (as far as I know). I believe it may be using the USB OTG standard.
I know that a standard USB SD card reader requires a USB host to connect to. That is why I was hoping to find a non-standard SD card reader specialized for use with Windows Mobile phones or HTC phones. There is no doubt that it is possible to make such a device - I just don't know if anyone has done it. It would be useful for many purposes.
Here are some devices that come close to what I want to achieve, but not quite:
http://www.usbgo.com/
http://www.cooldrives.com/usb-otg-adapter.html
The main problem with these is that I don't see any option to select only a few photos to transfer.
So I was hoping that one of the knowledgeable people in here knew of a solution.
doubt any cable it do it as the cable it would have to init the usb connections to both devices and handle which files where to be transfered from to where
that would prob require the cable to have a screen and input option which would
pretty much make it a compuer or a pda with usbHost
my bet is that ipod have usbHost otherwise it would never work
unfortunaly the many posts in the forum about usbHost include as many hits about
usbToGo
and as much or little success
Connect a Usb host device with the camera
Hi.
Do you know how I can connect a digital camera with a device that has usb host. I own a X7501 with WM6.1. I was looking for a solution to transfer my digital photos taken in my 7 MP Sony Digital Camera to my HTC, in order to send it by mail.
Thanks for any suggestion

Also I try to connect it via the docking station that has two usb ports for the USB HOST, in these I can connect a mouse and a keyboard. Also it has an external power, but the camera did nothing at all. I try to use all the connection mode that the camara has.
Also I try that some other recomend in this thread: USB Driver for Digital Camara.
I made a lot of search. Did you know somebody that can help me.
Regards.
you sugest you ask in the Athena forum
or pm some of the people who wrote in the
thread i linked to
as I don't have any first hand exp with Athena's or using usbHost
You can actually buy SD to Micro sd adaptors. I have one, they work really well.

simple answer
Get a micro sd card that has an SD adapter. Plug the micro sd card into the sd adapter and plug the sd adapter into the camera. Take your pictures. When you are ready to email pictures, pull the adapter out of the camera, remove the micro sd card, and plug it into your phone. You are ready to email pictures. Keep things simple and just carry the micro sd adapter and forget all the cables and stuff. A spare card is always handy, too.
I have searched all over and I am not having any luck, so I am hoping that someone here can help.
At the beginning of Oct. I rooted my incredible using unrEVOked and the Stock HTC Rom. Everything was working fine at the beginning until a few days ago when I went to go plug my phone into the USB port on my car stereo, this is where it gets weird. First the stereo was not able to recognize the device, which it was able to before, and it doesn't even attempt to look for anything, almost like I didn't plug in anything at all and the Battery light keeps flashing on and off. Thinking it might be an issue with the stereo, I try it with my wife's DX with the same USB cable and it works fine. So it is not a problem with the stereo or cable. If I leave everything plugged in to the stereo and reboot there is a few seconds that the stereo is reading the phone, but as the phone gets closer to finishing the reboot the stereo stops recognizing the phone.
In my attempt to figure it out, I first did 5 different restore backups neither one worked. I unrooted and did a factory data reset and that doesn't work. In my frustration I rerooted using unrEVOked again and this time I flashed virtious ROM and Kernel, this didn't fix the problem. So I tried a different ROM and Kernel this time using Redemptive rEVOlution 1.8 along with the Hydra Kernel and again no luck.
The strange thing is when I plug my phone into the PC, both internal and sd card drives are seen and I can access the files just fine. It is only when I go to plug it in to the USB port in the car is when it is not finding anything. My car stereo is not picky when it comes to internal or external phone storage and I have put music on both drives and it does not read either one. It is almost like a file or program got erased and nothing I have done is able to fix it.
Anybody have any ideas that might help?
Have you tried copying all the files on your sd to your pc then formating the sd card fat32 from windows and then copying all your files back to the sd. This same thing happened to me once drove me nuts couldn't figure it out then I had to format my card for something else I was doing and after that it started working fine again.
Also this may sound obvious but you do have the default pc connection type set to disk drive right?
Speculating here, but ~
Is USB debugging checked?
Maybe toggle that - Unknown Sources toggle as well.
Settings>Applications>Unknown Sources
Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
Maybe toggle mock locations as well - found in location w/ USB Debugging.
I have the same problem with my Vibrant. I have an Alpine IXA-W404. When I plug in my phone via usb, it shows "searching" then "not supported" but on my head units screen it starts to show some random music files on my phone, but won't play them. I tried plugging in using two different wires, and tried with debugging on and off.
Any help? I even saw a video where the guy was doing it online with a similar setup, using a Droid and some other similar Alpine deck.
Thanks!
-edit-
when i select "media player" from the usb settings on the phone, after about 20 seconds, the head unit starts to play a few songs but its very choppy. Any help is appreciated!

This fixed my problem before when I had issues like the OP is having.
Longshot here, but this happened to me w/ my vehicle when I put a ton of mp3's on a thumb drive, and not a specific folder on the USB....
Is the vehicle trying to index the contents of SD card or other device drive and cannot?
Is the music or other content on the device in a specific folder, or spread out amongst directories/folders?
Have you tried copying say the mp3's (whatever content) onto a flash drive, and whether the car 'sees' them?
Speculation: the vehicle is trying to catalog/index the files/content ~
As such, there are either too many for the vehicle to index, and/or desired content to be read by vehicle need to be consolidated into folder(s) the vehicle can see, read, and index.
Imagine the brain in the vehicle can only index so much content.
still was not able to get it going with all of the above, i downloaded "auto mount sd card" from the market after hearing that it helps but still to no avail.
any more suggestions? this is something i'd really like to use my phone for!
Maybe let us know the device that you're connecting it to.
Oh yeah, also some after-market USB cords will only charge and not send any data- so make sure that isn't your problem either.
Could this have something to do with the usb apk? I've used a lot of different roms and some would work and some would not. I'm currently using a Sense 3.0 , Nils Business 3.0 and it doesn't mount to my car stereo.
I just restored an old backup of a rom Warm-Z and the mount worked, no problem. I then went back to my current sense 3.0 and it doesn't.
Hi,
MTP is starting to be a real pain for me. For all its benefits, its not as good as Mass Storage.
If I'd rather use my laptop to Edit MP3 Tags (as its much faster than using a touch screen), it seems I have to transfer all my music (copy) from my GNEX over to my computer, edit the tags, then copy them back over.
That to me is a real pain.
I could view the MP3's via my PC with the GNex connected, but if I try and do anything to them, I notice that its read only.
Anyway around that other than what I'm already doing? I really don't like offloading the mp3's just to edit and put them back again.
You might try mounting the internal phone storage via WebDAV. I use an app called "WebDAV server" to serve out my phone's storage via WebDAV and then use a program called "NetDrive" to mount the storage on my PC. The storage looks and acts like a Windows drive on the PC, though it is a bit slower than a mass storage mount would be. It gets around the limitations of the default media mounting.
can any one help me and suggest a method to enable the mass storage mode in my note 2 , when connected to my laptop ?
Firstly why? MTP is better when you get it working as you don' t need to unmount anything from the phone first!
Secondly, it is likely to be possible yes probably very similar to how it was hacked to work on the s3, however it only worked for external sd and caused lots of corruptions to sd cards... so it is far from perfect.
My advice would be to get used to MTP.
i was need it to let my stereo car read mp3 files i solved by installing an s3 hack that can make the extsd a mass storage unit take a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009 it worked for me i'm with omega v4 rom

I understand what you mean but. ..it becomes virtually impossible and frustrating to transfer stuff to internal memory or even external memory because it is slow. ..Very slow
External memory I can manage by taking out my card and using an adapter to plug it into my laptop card slot..
Is there a way to mount internal memory as usb mass storage? I don't mind if I have to turn my phone off or something
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Did you try Airdroid?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
try Kies over wifi...
it transfer data using local connection and transfers GBs of files in some minutes definitely MUCH faster than MTP and prefer it to AirDroid, but it hasnt been working lately (last time i checked was a week or two back)
This is a problem for those like me using Ubuntu. I never managed to make MTP work on it.
Wi-Fi transfer of files can be done with X-Link, but the lack of mass storage is a nuisance.

Yes, MTP is a big problem on Ubuntu. I have tried 3 implementations of MTP protocol on 12.04 and 12.10, no dice.
i'm searching for an answer. worst thing with mtp is the fact that it hides directories from you! so you can't backup everything properly. annoying
bump! MTP is too/painfully slow. Reminds me of 1995. We need an alternative. Whoever put up this technology without due consideration and testing, before deploying it on these popular devices needs to be consider a different job.
looks like I wont be getting this phone until mass storage mode is added

Unfortunately, there is no way to enable UMS mode without rooting the phone.
I had to find a solution for my car stereo be able to read mp3 files.
I just rooted the phone and install SGS3 easy UMS ( PlayStore ). Yes its working just perfect on NoteII.
I'm using Ubuntu at work and it works like a charm as well.
Don't forget to unmount the drive in Ubuntu before unplug, and stop the service on Windows.
Also, on the UMS app, switch back to MTP before unplug, to avoid files errors ( no problem if u are just reading, ie: car stereo)

Hello,
one question - how to make two-way sync folders between my laptop and SGN2?
I always did it with GoodSync, but now it is impossible...
thx
Haha isn't this a cool icon? ---->
Gah.... I was hoping there was a way to USB mass storage on this phone. I guess I should have done more research on the phone before I bought it. I'm still in my 2 week return it period, but that's not THAT much of a deal breaker. Just really stupid... Why can't I have it all?? I mean we finally got USB host (OTG or whatever; same same) from a stock phone, only to lose USB Mass Storage! Oh the frustrations!
Dramatics aside, will a custom ROM allow something different? I'm not clear on what layer this MTP mode is operating at. I did think it was funny that it popped up as a camera type device in Windows. Right now I'm only using internal flash. Usually I want to browse pics on the phone from the PC, and in this case, if I use IrfanView to open one on the device, it copies it local and then opens it, so I can't scroll through them. Silly, and mildly frustrating. :-/
I'm going to look into some networking options to see if those work (Kies, AirDroid, maybe FTP). Actually, Dropbox might solve this particular problem for me now that I think of it.
I saw the thread for mounting external SD as USB mass storage. I take it there's no way to co-mount the internal storage as a USB mass storage device?

Well, Samsung turned off the USB Mass Storage for obvious reasons. But anyway, I can access both memories from my computers, using MS Windows.
On windows, there's no problem at all as you can manage all the files directly from explorer.
On Other systems, the problem is different. For some reasons, like with all other systems (ie car stereo or media player...), the galaxy will not be recognized because MTP needs drivers. Then, you have to use UMS and the only way to install and use it is to root the phone. But keep in mind UMS will only permit access to external memory card.
Well, if I have to transfer files from internal memory through UMS, I copy the files I need to external memory before using it..... That's not a big problem , is it ? And because your phone is rooted, you can even find a script to copy some folders automatically.
Hope I'm clear enough and it helps.
is there any way we can use mass storage for internal memory? not is slow and at times I face serious problems in copying files t my computer. so I want to connect internal memory by ums. can I do it? I am new to the device by the way.

You'd need a custom ROM that supports UMS. I don't know if there are any, so that's as far as I can help you.
UMS was pretty much abandoned in ICS though (though you could still force it on some phones; mostly Samsungs). After ICS, MTP became the only option. I hate MTP too... my 2010 car can only read UMS and not MTP. I used to be able to plug my phone into the car to listen to music, but now I can't. And going out and buying a new car isn't exactly an option!
Try this..it might be a hit and miss sometimes but works..note it will only ummount the external sd-card, so your car can play music stored only on the external sd-card
