[Q] root/unroot - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello, I am new on android, I have one question, if I root and install cwm recovery then unroot with stock firmware will it delete all root apps and also cwm recovery ?

Yes idd u will get everything back to stock except ur binary counter thats why if u EVER want to unroot for warranty purpose u need to use triangle away anf after resetting counter boot directly into download mode and flash then your stock tar file trough odin x)

[Q] Do I need to take out clockwork to update stock? How to flash original recovery??

SGH-T999, stock t999uvdlja
A month or two ago, I followed a rooting instructions thread on here. It had me use odin to flash over a clockwork recovery mod as the first step. It flashed over fine according to odin, but I was never able to enter recovery following the next steps and therefore was not able to root. I can't find the thread anymore.
I realized after the fact that my phone was already on Jellybean, so I presume, maybe wrongly, that the reason the clockwork mod wouldn't work was because it was for the older Ice cream sandwich firmware.
Anyway, now my phone says unable to update because it's modified when I go into settings:about:software updates.
I want to get this error to go away. I have kies and there is now a firmware update in there that I would like to do to see if it fixes a problem with the wifi calling app breaking caller id among other things.
I am afraid that if I try to push this update via kies, it may brick the phone or not work thanks to the clockwork mod problem.
So two questions: 1) how can I un-flash that clockwork mod out of there and make the recovery back to stock so there is no further error or possible warranty issue, and 2) is it safe to do that kies firmware update and if so would that fix the recovery on its own?
Any ideas?

You need to find the stock recovery .tar file and use odin to flash it the same way you flashed the cwm recovery. Then you will probably need to use triangle away to reset the counter.....dont think kies would work if it sees your device is modified but not sure about that.
Use triangle away first to reset your flash counter then odin the completly stock jb from here http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426424....this is from docholidays thread for stock odin roms in the sticky section of development. ..this should give you a completely stock phone including recovery.....you will lose your data from this process but your sd card will be fine.
Edit: just realized you dont have root...you need root to use triangle away....so first odin root 66 pre root stock rom....then use triangle away....then odin stock unrooted rom that I linked above.

help with stock recovery

okay so this is wat I'm up against .
I rooted my GS4 about a week ago and everything has gone fine , I have not installed any custom roms (still running stock) but I do have twrp recovery installed . now of course when I try to get the OTA update I get the "your device has been modified software updates are not available" (I'm guessing this is because of the twrp recovery) . . now my question is is there a way to get the update without unrooting or having to reinstall stock recovery (so I can keep twrp recovery) since I still have the stock rom on my phone ? and if there is not where can I find stock recovery file to put back onto my phone .
any help would be appreciated , thanks yall .

You can try Triangle Away, some have said that it can spoof your device as being un-modified for a boot or so, but if that doesn't work the best bet would be to just make a backup with TWRP, make sure you save it on your SD card or even back it up to a computer, use Triangle Away to reset your flash counter, then Odin back to stock. Might be a different/easier way to do it, but that way would most assuredly work.
You can use Mobile Odin to only install stock recovery (I keep the full stock .tar on my SD card for emergency purposes), then use Triangle Away to clean up your flash counter. Should be Official then.
And after you ODIN, you MUST do a factory reset to get the official back.
Thank you.

Not true, I flashed back to a back up on TWRP, used Mobile Odin to flash stock recovery, used Triangle away to reset counter and checked the option in TA to disable root on boot up for a few minutes, and mine is Official.
are there files which have js stock recovery or would I have to flash the whole stock rom over again even tho I still am using stock rom .

Ok.. here you go-
1. Download pre-rooted dmg1 stock rom from dr.ketan's thread. Install it from odin PDA tab. If you are stuck on the initial boot screen, go to stock recovery and reset/clear data (warning- this will also wipe you personal data on the internal memory, make sure you backup important stuff)
2. Install triangle away android app and reset the custom counter in the bootloader to zero... and then dont install a custom recovery because even after installing the recovery, if you set the counter to zero, then you'll have it again to '1' everytime you boot your phone because the bootloader detects the custom recovery during boot
3. Whenever you want to claim your warranty, go to superSU app and go to 'unroot'..
You'll have full stock dmg1 (4.1.2) n7100 and ready to claim warranty

4.3 question

I may trade some one for this phone. It has the 4.3 update on it already. Can I flash a custom recovery of I don't care if Knox gets tripped or can a recovery not be flashed at all?

Sure you can, you can flash either TWRP or CWM recovery, but you need to ROOT
the phone first. Without root you cannot do much of anything except download/install
apps and games from the google play store.
Good luck!

I think you can still direct flash a recovery in Odin on the 4.3 firmware, can't you?
I dont' know for sure as I never tried it. But if you can still flash CF-Auto Root in Odin I'd imagine you could flash TWRP or CWM in Odin too. All CF Auto Root does is install a recovery to flash SuperUser, so I'm pretty sure you can direct flash any other Recovery.
If you are looking to flash custom ROMs this is the faster way because it eliminates a step. If you just want the stock ROM with root access, then you may as well just CF Auto Root it (which will trip the knox flag) and install a recovery later.
I have 4.3 and have tripped KNOX. I downloaded the 4.3 stock tar and tried to flash it with Odin and it just fails. The only way to get my phone to boot again is to flash TWRP with Odin and then it boot up into my 4.3 rom I installed via TWRP.
Any way to get the stock 4.3 onto the phone again?
Thanks
re: recovery/knox
I have been meaning to ask this question for about 4 days now...
Actually I was waiting for someone else to ask this question...
Why is it that on MDL 4.2.2 roms I can see all the options in the screen shot below when long pressing
a contacts names so I can edit their phone numbers and details plus a lot of other options.
Here is a screenshot of MDL 4.2.2 contact screen after long pressing contact name:
When I long press a contact name using the MK2 4.3 stock/semi stock roms I
don't even see "edit", there are only perhaps 4 options to choose from when I
long press contact names.
I have flashed 3-4 of these MK2 4.3 cwm/twrp zip file roms and they also have the
same issue. (perhaps I am really over looking something?)
Thanks!
